KNWA Pulling a KATV?
This from the tip box:"I'm hearing KNWA has hired Matt Turner to replace Don Elkins. He was one of their sports anchors. Looks like they are pulling a KATV Scott Inman move. Wonder how it will work out?"

Turner has been filling-in/trying out for the gig the last couple weeks. He's a good guy.
Although Matt Turner can't save KNWA from its tanked ratings. I've never seen numbers so low.
I'm not sure what people mean when they say "I've never seen numbers so low."
Maybe it was that way in the past. But according to the Arkansas Business Journal, "After shifting its focus from the 11-county dominant market area to Washington and Benton counties in 2004, KNWA has taken the LEAD during the 10 p.m. television newscast for those two counties."
November 2005 in Northwest Arkansas at 10 p.m.:
KFSM - 5.7
KHOG - 7.3
KNWA - 7.4
Yes - KNWA gets whalloped in the entire DMA. It's even in third place at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. in NWA. But the station isn't playing to win in the DMA. And 10 p.m. is where the money's at.
Matt's definitely a good guy, but not news anchor material. He's a sports guy, and that's where he belongs. The management moving him into news just shows how inept and desperate they have become. Not a smart move at all. But then again, when have we ever known KNWA to make any *GOOD* decisions?
He looks great at the desk.
If he gets the job, Neile would probably be the next to get the boot. She looks too old for him. Or if he sticks around, she'd at least need some kind of makeover.
There are lots of reasons for Nelie to get the boot. Not the least of which is she is lousy on-air.

KNWA had a disaster in the May book.
Yeah, if they are playing for 10, they just lost big time. Their 10 p.m. numbers are down 50% year to year.

nov. was a fluke for knwa/deathstar. people tuned in to see what it was all about. by feb they were gone. may has both 5 and 40/29 swinging up, knwa swinging down.
with elkins and katzfey gone, july ain't gonna be pretty
if u are at a station that pays for them, u already have them.
long story short, 40/29 and 5 in a catfight for NWA. knwa flopped.
market wide, 5 leads in HH and demos, 40/29 putting up a fight, knwa non-entity.
KFSM continues to trend up in all categories. KHBS/KHOG finally stopped sliding and moved up again, taking numbers away from KNWA which is way down across the boards.
I am happy to hear this if it means Neile is the next to go. She is so [i]awful.[/i] If they any sense at all, they will get rid of her and FAST.
I think its funny when 24 says their "all northwest arkansas all the time", and then try to slyfully sneak down to the river valley when something happens there, which is more often than people think. they'll NEVER be out of the basement. they'll always be licking 5 & 40/29 behinds.
KNWA had a story the other day about the Waldron mayor sex scandal. Now if I am not mistaken, KFSM broke the story weeks ago and Waldron is in the river valley, are they not?
Forgot to mention, back during the snow storm a few months back they had Liz Hogan in Fort Smith doing live reports along 540. Is that really necessary since they said screw you to Fort Smith last year? If you aren't going to carry news from there, don't carry news from there. Its really simple. Don't advertise that you are only NWA news if you are going to always have your news crews driving to FSM to catch stories weeks late.
Actually, I believe 5 and 40/29 broke the Waldron story on the same day.
If I'm not mistaken, both stations spoke with the same "Waldron Resident" about the allegations.
I think 40/29 even had an on camera one on one with the mayor himself.
I think the races are going to be between 5 & 40/29...24 is out of the picture now. Their graphics and fancy newsroom could only take them so far. Sorry Bo...your Razorback Nation is a FLOP as well, you're awful.

KNWA and 5 broke the Waldron Mayor story on the same day, a while back. KNWA wasn't playing catch-up the other day, they gave an update.
KNWA is a NWA-only station, for the most part... but come on, just like every other TV station everywhere, they throw in some regional news when it's something interesting. What's wrong with that?
I had people in 3 different states call me to ask questions about the Waldron mayor.
TV stations all around the country did it.
knwa has had many news directors in the past year. now, the anchor dance.
I just think it's funny seeing KNWA sneak into the River Valley, the area they abandoned, to cover a story. They know no one down here likes them. And according to the May #'s, it looks like NWA is starting to do the same. You couldn't pay me to be news director there. There's no hope for them.
KNWA can be a joke but I believe the other two stations are bad also. I worked with Matt Turner for a while and I think it is a great move. He doesn't come across like a snobby person on air and that is because he is a good guy. Don was good but I don't think he cared about anything. Neile and Matt could make a good team but what do I know? I got the boot!
Might work...you obviously didn't work with Elkins much because I did for several years, and he care probably too much about the news product going on the air. He used to get pretty angry about the fluff going on the air over at that place. Too bad KNWA didn't get a real newsman to fill the seat.

Razorback Nation doesn't work because it ignores everything else: high schools, local stories, human interest, etc. 40/29 and KFSM (more 40/29 really) aim for Razorbacks, human interest, high schools, all of it... and they do it in both cities. Meanwhile... KNWA tries to simulcast in Little Rock. the audience isn't dumb. They see it for what it is... a one-pony show. Local sports should be about ALL local sports, just like news.
The "Razorback Nation" format is smart during football and basketball seasons. Right now, it's tough to a Razorback-only show. And simulcasting in LR is stupid. You can't ignore Jermain Taylor and the Little Rock Travelers and hope to be thought of as a local 'cast.
BTW, how is KNWA managing without the wire? How are they getting anything outside of the Two-Ton District without it? Surfing the web?
You guys are really harping on KARK pulling out of Nielsen and AP subscriptions. The public could care less folks! That is a non-issue to us! I have no doubt that there are other ways to get the information provided by those two services.
Yes stations are required to have an FCC license, but not Neilsen/AP services. Some of you act like they are equals.
And, since apparently they can get by without those services....I wonder who's really stupid...those who pay for all that or those who don't??
Nah, just dishonest, because they do have to use the web to get their stuff, and most of that comes from the AP, so everyone else pays for it and you guys steal it. Tell me I'm wrong, go ahead -- but it's true.

The Turner hire is about to happen. I wonder how KNWA's brilliant general manager and promotional team will introduce him. "Here's the best newsreader in the building but he's never anchored the news. Let's see what happens. Watch KNWA!"
I may be in the minority but I believe Matt will be really good on the desk. He anchored a couple of years ago for some reason and if I recall he was alright. The only problem I can see with it is that he is known as a sports guy. One of my buddies wants that job. Any ideas of what they pay

could the news stations around please hire some people who know what they are doing. I am so sick of watching them with people who have no personality, and have problems reading their lines.
KNWA there is more to sports than the Razorbacks. Please include some other highlights in your sportscast.

KNWA is usually the target of UNIVERSAL scorn on here. Is this just, like, jealousy or is KNWA perceived as this subconcious threat to 5 and 40/29? Seriously...
They are the subject of universal scorn because they have subjected themselves to universal scorn.
I have lived all around the US, by far this area has the worst news stations.
Someone says that in every city in America. Blah, blah, blah. If they are getting the audience and the revenue, then they are doing what's right for the market.
Tell Bo to go and look for a job because he won't have Matt Turner to carry his show. If they ever lose Matt I will switch stations because he is the only one there worth watching. I sure will miss him doing sports though!
Matt Turner is far to talented to even be associated with this station. Razorback Nation will never survive without Matts enthusiasm.

I think Turner becoming a news anchor is going to be an interesting move. He is very talented in his short tenure, but reminds me of Derek Burleson a lot. Kinda the second hand man for sports, but when a big story breaks...he's the first one they turn to and I think both Matt and Derek are excellent talent in the sports field and news field when need be.
Also someone mentioned Elkins going to 5...I talked to him a few weeks ago and as far as I know hes done with tv for a while, he seems to be enjoying doing just his radio show and has been promoting it rather well on myspace.
What's up with that self-defense guy that is on the morning show sometimes? Him and Dana seem to be pretty good buddies. Wonder if he will follow her to the Fox news at 9p? Any inside info?
