KATV Not Carrying All World Cup Soccer Games

This from the tip box:

"KATV in Little Rock is pre-empting 6 of the World Cup soccer matches because it conficts with their normal weekend programming. Therefore Central Arkansas viewers won't be able to see those in HDTV. WB and future MyNetwork TV affliate KWBF will pick up the games KATV refuses to air. This from a post on AVS forum.

Here are the games not shown....

To answer my own question

Thank you for contacting KATV about the 2006 FIFA World Cup games on ABC. Regrettably, KATV will not be able to carry all of the World Cup games offered by ABC due to the Federal Communications Commission mandate that we must carry a minimum of three hours of children’s programming weekly, as well as our previous commitments to local religious programming.

KATV notified ABC that we would be unable to carry six of the World Cup games and the network responded by securing another Little Rock station to broadcast these six games. All of the preempted games will be on KWBF / Channel 42.

To alert our viewers, KATV will scroll an informational text indicating the game is being shown on KWBF at the scheduled time for each game. In addition, KATV newscasts prior to the preempted games, will also announce the channel change.

The six games that will be shown by KWBF/Channel 42 (Little Rock) are:
· Saturday, June 10 at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM
· Sunday, June 11 at 10:30 AM
· Sunday, June 18 at 8:00 AM and 10:30 AM
· Sunday, June 25 at 9:30 AM

We apologize that we are unable to carry all of the World Cup Soccer games, but in lieu of our broadcasting them, we believe this is the best solution for our viewers.

Thank you for visiting the KATV website and for watching Channel 7.

Program Director"

Way to go KATV. I'd rather watch Ron Popeil sell those little things at the end of your shoe laces than watch World Cup Soccer!!!

Isn't it amazing that stations much bigger with much more money on the line always seem to find a way to work out programming issues....while medium to small markets dealing in small change by comparison always seem to have conflicts that keep them from airing popular special programming? Or...it could just be small-minded execs demonstrating why they haven't made it to larger markets. THIS IS A JOKE!!! THE WORLD CUP IS THE BIGGEST INTERNATIONAL SPORTING EVENT EVERY YEAR!!! If it's good enough for WABC, KABC, WLS, KGO....and on down....it's good enough for small-time KATV!! Doesn't the FCC impose the same rules on them...and don't you think they have contracts for religious programming and the like?? Why can they work it out and KATV can't?? This is embarrassing!! ABC's gotta be shaking their head!!

Joe Sixpack, wait until next fall (2007) when the NASCAR races get the "World Cup" treatment because KATV insists on airing the Houston Nutt show instead on Sunday afternoons.

As for small market stations, some are carring the World Cup. WABG (ch6/32 digital) in Greenwood-Greenville, MS is airing all the WC games and in HDTV AND DOLBY 5.1 Surround!!! Same for KTBS in Shreveport, and KHBS/KHOG Fayetteville, and Fort Smith. These are SMALLER markets than Little Rock. Again, its KATV's and Albritton's GREED that are denying HDTV viewers network programming. Remember Lost the last two seasons???

The other issue is KATV washing their hands of 6 of the games and allowing KWBF to carry them. KWBF despite being carried on D* and E* (direcTV, and DishNework), have limited cable carriage outside of central Arkansas proper. Many cable companies in the hinterlands don't carry that station, plus its OTA signal is much smaller than competing UHF stations KLRT, or KASN.

Too bad it's every 4 years. You must not even be a fan if you didn't know that.

Okay Hog Hater....that's a much bigger deal in Arkansas than Lost or even NASCAR.....my 10:42 post last night referred specifically to World Cup being preempted over paid and educational programming.

Anyone who carries Lost or NASCAR over the Hogs in Arkansas is equally a fool!!

I thought Nicholson and Farrester should have been canned last basketball season for choosing to preempt the Hogs in favor of Lost and Alias on a couple of occasions. That caused a MAJOR firestorm with the viewers and the U of A. If both of those guys weren't so established here...Albritton would have canned them. That was without a doubt the worst programming decision in the history of Arkansas TV news. It will NEVER happen again I can assure you!

OMG you're right. It was actually two seasons ago. Nicholson even tried to defend himself in TV spots and made even a bigger fool of himself.

The U of A and JP should have yanked their contract. Nicholson would have lost what's left of his hair and would have been spotted in the welfare office.

All that can be said in this siutation is hopefully more air time for Beth Hunt and less for Renee Shapiro. Question: why is Renee Shapiro even allowed on air???

The world cup is a crashing bore. Only a handful in this area give a rat's ass of the outcome. KATV is smart enough to know that at least.

Hog Hater?

Far from it, but i'm also a reasonable fan. My life does not live and breath by how the Razorbacks play. The days of only 3 tv stations are OVER!!! In an era when there are 200+ stations on Sat and digital cable and the damn complete HDTV sked on ABC isn't available.

KATV can always drop the ABC affliation, since its pretty much getting away with murder as scheduling goes. Heck, there might be time for an expanded GMA Arkansas---maybe Joan Early could actually do some work around the station. A couple of long-time network stations have done this one in Florida and one in Arizona (KTVK). KTVK bought large quanities of first-run syndicated programming. Heck, with all the ABC shows out of the way KATV might put in a few Razorback baseball games in primetime. And the newscasts will bring in enough money that Ol' Dale won't have to resort to allowing Jim Bakker to purchase daily airtime.

Understandable my friend....but for better or worse....you are outnumbered in this state.:)

KATV wants to have it both ways with the Hogs and ABC, and they get away with it because quite frankly.....ABC needs them more than they need ABC. Despite how we might view KATV locally....they are still highly respected in national circles as one of ABC's stronger affiliates.

I would love to see the Hogs go to a station that would expand coverage to include even more games....such as baseball.....and I'm sure staunch ABCers get frustrated when the network is preempted. But, don't expect things to change any time soon!

ABC doesn't care who their affil is in Little Rock. Their coverage is a fraction of a percent of the total country and it's not a metered market. ABC was more concerned about WJLA in DC, it was a group deal. All Allbritton stations are ABC's.

With all due respect....you have a short memory! Were you around here in the early to mid-90s? ABc raved about KATV...and at one point declared them the number one ABC affiliate in the country!

I know that locally we have issues with them...just plain don't like them...and resent them at times. I realize that are not popular with a lot of people locally! BUT....in NATIONAL circles...KATV is by far the most popular, well-known station and you damn better believe ABC cares what they do!

11:08 speaketh truth. I am a KARK employee. In national media circles, NO ONE has ever heard of THV, us, or FOX 16, but they've all heard of KATV. You can puke up breakfast in protest and disgust, but KATV is by far the most prominent Arkansas station nationally. They really built something up in the early 90s. Even though they are in the process of gradually tearing it down, KATV is still well-known and respected outside of our state.

At 11:30 AM, June 09, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually...11:15...it's not really about buddy-buddy between ABc and KATV. KATV is well-liked by them because for the better part of 20 years KATV has delivered SOLID ratings for ABC programming. Any Top 75 market affiliate that significantly outperforms the national average in terms of percentage of households watching ABC....they will get the attention and respect of network. By contrast...the ABC affiliate in Memphis has been in 3rd place for many years and their ABC programming numbers consistently run below the national average.

KATV has been a solid ABC performer for many years. As a result, they do have clout with ABC.

Hey now, THV may admittingly be a "Johnny Come Lately" with CBS, but we do pretty well here too! They're starting to notice us. The last 5-6 years we have performed very well for CBS!

"The world cup is a crashing bore. Only a handful in this area give a rat's ass of the outcome."

Insert *ANY* PGA golf tournament in the sentence above where "world cup" appears. It further amazes me that it has its own cable channel. It would be different if it were actually a sport, like soccer, which it most certainly is not. If it required any real physical exertion other than walking, the fat, alcoholic, degenerate gambler John Daly wouldn't be famous or have a way to raise money to support his gambling habit, or his drug-dealing wife, or ex-wife, whatever the case may be. He seems to go through spouses about as fast as he does his liquor and money, but I digress . . . .

Bottom line is soccer is the most popular sport in the world - deal with it. As such, there's obviously a reason ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 agreed to show it, and wouldn't have agreed to show it if they didn't think people would watch or if it wouldn't generate any revenue for them. They're not stupid.

I'll guarantee you a World Cup match would still get better ratings than whatever chlidren's/religious program is on. Of course, anti-soccer folks like yourself actually want us to believe that Lilo & Stitch or Pulaski Heights Methodist would draw more viewers than a World Cup Soccer match. That's hysterical!

I didn't know you posted on here, Wally (Hall)!

I do. What's your point?

At 4:34 PM, June 09, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who cares? A lot of people in this state do, and KATV needs to realize what a stupid mistake it is making.
Plus, their excuse about FCC requirements and children's programming is a LIE. Any station can shift programming around, and KATV is doing that when it does air some World Cup games. If it was such a big deal, then lots of other stations wouldn't be airing the games. KATV is too close-minded and lazy to realize that soccer is one of the fastest growing sports in this country and that the World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the planet.
They may only care about Razorback sports, but lots of us do care about world soccer and MLS action. Sadly, this isn't the first time KATV has screwed over soccer fans, it usually pre-empts the MLS cup every year.

Well, it is obvious KATV is biased toward Hispanics, since the lead game on Sunday is Mexico v. Iran.

With the amount of Latinos in Arkansas, you would think the suits at KATV would know better.

Also, I better, ever, EEEEVVVVER, never see a Razorback soccer highlight.

THV has some of the highest ratings for local affiliates of the Early Show on CBS due to THV this morning doing so well. Why do you think Renee Syler paid them a visit and Dave Price is stopping in LR for his tour? CBS recognizes their morning ratings. Evening news? That's another story altogether......

My "johnny come lately" comment was not a cut-down, but a statement of fact. There's no question THV is the fastest growing station, but they don't haven't had the long-term success delivering ratings for CBS that KATV has had for ABC. I have no doubt that THV will continue to do well and get more and more attention and recognition from CBS. They are just, like I said, somewhat of a johnny come lately on the national scene. KATV.....AT THIS POINT.....is BY FAR the most well-known Little Rock station in national circles.

If there were going to be teams of hot chicks playing, there would be a lotter higher demand for KATV to show the World Cup here in Arkansas. It would also help if the US team were going to be competitive, and if there was a chance of any of the aforementioned hot chicks ripping their jerseys off.

When is Beth Hunt due? Do we know which KATV exec is the father??

You are obviously clueless about World Cup soccer as the US is ranked 5th or 6th currently in the FIFA rankings - higher than ever before, so to say that the US won't be competitive is just plain wrong. The other reality is that the Women's World Cup is even LESS popular than the men's, so I would also submit that a US men's match would easily outdraw a US women's match (although I would admit both sets of ratings would be pretty low to begin with), even if we knew that Brandy Chastain would be ripping her jersey off. Soccer fans don't watch just because someone's going to be ripping their jersey off. Even if they did, they're not going to wait for 2 45-minutes halves, a 15-minute OT, and penalty kicks to see it. Get a clue.

Switching gears - Beth Hunt is pregnant? Who's the father?

Thanks to WB 42 for picking up the games that KATV is shunning. Channel 7 has vastly underestimated the desire of soccer fans to see all the games, not just USA!

KATV could've run world cup soccer on digital HD channel 7-1 and put their so-called "FCC-required" programs on digital 7-2.

Of course KATV probably doesn't know how to do that. They don't even have a full power HDTV station yet.

Their ratings are heading down because their priorities are screwed up!
