Hankins Takes Shots at THV's Competition

Arkansas Business Publisher and KTHV Business Contributer Jeff Hankins blogged the election returns last night. And he didn't hesitate one bit slamming THV's competition. Below are a couple of blogged items from last night:

> "A reporter for Fox 16 just ended a live segment by saying: "Live from, uh, where am I? (He turns to look at the campaign sign) From the Bill Halter campaign party...."

> "KARK Channel 4 is crawling election results tonight, but the burning question is: how are they getting results?

The station isn't a member of The Associated Press, and the Secretary of State's office Web site is way behind with very little posted."

Not sure about the KARK comment, but the one from FOX 16, that was planned. If you didn't get that, you must not get much!

Both of those quotes from Hankins' blog are trying to make something of nothing.

It's the primaries anyway...

The best way to make yourself look better is to put down the competition. Apparently that's the only way that the guy can make himself appear qualified....

well the election was pretty boring, even with the glitches. i guess Hankins had to come up with something entertaining to get people to read his blog.

boy, i can't wait to hear his opinions of other stations' coverage in november! i hope he finds someone with ugly graphics!

The most enjoyable part of reading Hankin's blog is when others start criticizing him. I don't know the guy but after reading his responses to some posts on his blog, he's apparently quite sensitive. I expect that he will be quite upset once someone advises him about this thread.

Arkansas Business exists only so two guys can write off business lunches under the guise of "reviewing" restaurants. Otherwise, that rag is content-free.

About the Fox Comment. I too saw that and thought the same thing. How does one plan to look stupid?

So, how did KARK get their stuff? Someone over there tell us? Or are you all sworn to secrecy that you won't spill the beans that you broke the law?

Speaking of Hankins, can we post on the Randy Hankins special or do we need to launch a new thread?

Yeah Right. That reporter had NO CLUE what he was talking about. He looked like an idiot. It made me laugh out loud.

Planned...yeah right! That will make people take your seriously in this market.

Why not. There's certainly a resemblance.

How exactly would KARK be "breaking the law?" Anyone can get election results. It's not like all election results must go through the Associated Press.

What did everyone think
of Craig's special ?

I thought it was hilarious! Craig is good at those kinds of things. He was in his element.

Like him or not he is successful at what he does. People do love him!

Obviouisly someone starved for entertainment. I guess you typically watch grass grow or paint dry. That stuff may work for radio... but not television.

It was a great show! Keep it up. Also more phone calls on the 5:00 show!

Sincerely, KATV & KARK

God bless the host of this blog. There would be so many bored people in the industry without it.

That FOX reporter should face serious discipline if not termination. That was terrible. I'm sure he's a nice guy and I felt bad for him...but that is absolutely inexcuseable!

I liked it so what? If you did not like it that is your opinion.

I don't get why so many people on here are a-holes! Were you a bully growing up too?

So...Win got fired because he was negative on his blog...does that mean KTHV will fire Hankins for the same reason.

Let's straighten out the KARK/AP results situation. They don't subscribe to AP, although I'm guessing they might have been able to pony up for the AP election results package. The basic question is valid - if you don't have that data streaming in from SOMEWHERE, you're not going to have the data to crawl. You can't keep up with the competition if you're trying to manually type it in. It's the same with the college sports rankings. AP is keeping an eye on them to make sure they don't announce the "Top 20" teams. That's proprietary for AP customers, I'm told.

Hankins had to retract his blog post today after relying on a so-called reliable source to report that Arkansas Symphony Conductor David Itkin was leaving LR for Las Vegas. Itkins's wife later called Ark Business to deny the departure noting that David's contract ran thru 2008 and that he intended to renew. More quality journalism!

Re: KARK and AP...

You really CAN'T even type in the results manually -- especially when you consider these are statewide races. Unless you have an entire newsroom staff doing nothing but making calls/checking Web sites and entering data, there's no way all that could be done manually.

KNWA, I could see it happening there -- it might be cumbersome, but at least they're not trying to cover an entire state. For KARK? No way.

KARK took them numbers illegaly. Duane Lammers (CFO of Deathstar) doesn't care. Heck he even stills the book for numbers.

The people that run Deathstar have on ethics.

Duane Lammers just tries to bull people to get his way!

WHO CARES how KARK got their election results! How does that affect the other stations? Well, I guess it did somehow because you are all up in arms about it????

Someday a good company with deep pockets is gonna buy that station...then out a fresh product on the air that puts a hurt on everyone!

They're not at that point right noe. Everyone dumps on them and I think it's funny. If they're so bad...then why is anyone concerned about what they do or don't do??? How could they affect anything at the other "fine" stations around here??

At 12:48 PM, May 26, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know what I think?? I think the other stations are genuinely concerned that one day KARK might just get it together and make a run??? They've made some GODAWFUL personnel decisions over the past decade plus that has them where they are now...but that doesn't mean they can't get it back together again someday!

At 12:51 PM, May 26, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is not going to be that company...but I do give them credit for helping to trim costs and shed some baggage. They will leave KARK in better shape for the next company to come in.

the only way KARK can come back is to spend BIG money! Nexstar isn't going to do that, but that doesn't mean they can't help prepare for the future!

At 2:22 PM, May 26, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK did not get their results illegally. There are other wire services out there besides AP. I could tell you, but it's so much fun watching you guys speculate and insinuate.

Craig O'Neil is not funny. What in the hell is going on at THV? Why are they letting him act like an ass every night? They probably think it gets people talking and it does, kind of like the Win Noble incident.

At 3:04 PM, May 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Craig is a huge asset to THV. He is very well liked and very popular in this market. They really NEED Craig.

At 12:54 AM, May 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you again THV promotion department--or should I just say, as we do, the O'Neil Department.

You guys just don't get it. Just because a guy is popular and everyone knows him and he's funny doesn't mean he boosts your stations' image. It does for people looking for jokes, but not for people looking for news of the day. Don't your ratings at five o'clock reflect this. Oh yeah, that's a mystery to you guys as to why that "joke" doesn't work.

Craig's popularity as a comedian doesn't reflect on anyone but Craig as a comedian. When you have him reading hard news during your five o'clock 'cast (it ain't a newscast), it reflects that the news managers are either having it rammed down their throat or are taking the easy way out. Ray Romano is a funny guy and people like him, but you don't put him on the CBS Evening News.

What you really NEED at THV is to stop letting the news department be the entertainment division and do some damn news.

Let me put it this way; who put your Craig Special together? Did the news department people edit it or the promotion department? Which ever one did it, tells you where your prioritities are. You wonder why the ratings are slipping and look to a comedian to shore them up. What's wrong with this picture?

OK, so do you think Liz Massey and Andy Pearson are going to pull in ratings because they are not funny and just read the news? I don't care to watch people just read the news. I enjoy the more "entertaining" news anchors. Anybody can sit behind the desk and read the news.
I don't agree with a lot of decisions THV has made as far as who they have reading the news. Win was obviously a big mistake, and there are others. I do think they were right in hiring Craig, and I enjoy thier morning show, but there is not much else about thier news I care for.

At 1:38 PM, May 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Ray Ramano were the new CBS evening news anchor, I would never miss it! That would be the highest rated network newscast. I would love to see him anchor.

At 1:47 PM, May 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Craig is not the reason the ratings have slipped on THV.

At 10:00 AM, May 29, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You'd watch Ramano because it would be a freak show. If something really hit the fan, would you choose him to be your credible source, or would choose the non-clown?
