KARK, Colleges and Money

Now this sounds like a real soap opera. KARK General Manager Rick Rogala denies to The Arkansas Times that the station will be selling news during a fall tour of Arkansas colleges. According to the article the controversy started after what is apparently copyrighted material was leaked to a local blogger on how colleges could partner up with KARK for $5,000 to be featured on KARK's morning program. Rogala explained it to The Arkansas Times this way:

KARK news director Rick Rogala (after complaining that the Times' source had swiped the station's “copyrighted content”) said that the campuses that would be visited by the morning show were picked solely by the news staff. After the stops on the tour were chosen, he said, the KARK advertising department came up with the idea of giving those colleges “added benefit” through a paid advertising partnership.

“It could be misinterpreted, but there is no content for sale,” Rogala said. “Somebody in marketing said, as long as we're going there, let's offer these universities the chance to push themselves further.”

Rogala said that one thing that might make the partnership offer look suspicious is that the version posted online bears a Hendrix College logo at the top, even though Hendrix is not one of the campuses on the KARK 4 Today campus tour. He said he will be looking into whether Hendrix was indeed offered a tour partnership by the KARK marketing department.

“The reality is that we're not going to Hendrix,” he said. “And if your question is, if Hendrix paid $5,000 would we come there, the answer is no."

I work for KARK and I have never been associated with any GM that has as much character as Rick does. This man would never do anything that he thought was shady. I know most of you in the business don't have high regards for your leadership but I do. He has has made a positive impact with a station that needed it. I'm proud to say he is my GM.

I too am an employee of KARK and work for Rick and proud of it. I noticed that you didn't say where you work. You omust not have a General Manager that you feel has a higher standing. If you feel like the business is not what you want it to be then get out. It's people like you with just hate that have run down this business not people like Rick who are trying to make the best of things.

You're "proud" to work for "rick"? C'mon Heverling, wipe your chin and get back to real work...sign off Rick's laptop and quit looking at naked pics of him.

Rick has a monumentous task before him. He is laboring mightily to pull the 3rd place station out of the cellar. He is doing it with a hodgepodge morning group and a fragmented sports crew and below-par reporters and decent anchors. Not the most elemtary of tasks.

Here's the question...

Was Hendrix originally ON the tour list (drafted by the news department) and then taken OFF (by the sales department) because they didn't want $5,000 in "added value?" Are there any stops on the original tour list (drafted by the news department) that DID NOT pony up the five grand (offered by the sales department) and are still on the tour?

This arrangement couldn't pass a mid-term, let alone the smell test.

The answers to the questions posed by 12:07 are no, and the original list has not changed.

Would the FCC think that what they are doing is wrong? That is the question. Selling spots in a news format is quite illegal. Whatever genious thought this up needs to go back to broadcast law class in college.

Let's focus our attention to 7 now. They too now have a college tour package out and it's double the price.

Congratulations Dale and Staff for being so UNorginial! You truly are the worst in Arkansas!

At 4:02 PM, August 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's true! And KATV is actually charging colleges for the opportunity to be on the morning show, unlike 4's presentation.

At 4:15 PM, August 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

How does this differ from KATV sending its weather guys on "Arkansas vacations" to Mt. Nebo, DeGray, or Chicot STATE PARKS, then seeing Arkansas Vacation spots run in the same newscast? My bet is Parks and Toursim is bringing cash to the table.

I agree with genious!

Actually it is Today's THV that is running "Amazed by Arkansas." THV is getting the $$$ from Parks and Tourism. But KATV has done the same thing under the "See Arkansas First" banner.

Face it...we're all whores.

I said that at the beginning. The truth is 4 is the most innicent of the bunch. I checked all of the packages out. The day that Dale and Larry have the class of Rick then we will all be happy. I haven't known any of the three men long but Rick is way above the other two when it comes to class.

If they don't fess up to who's buying the time, then yes... the FCC would care.

It's called plugola... and it's the quickest way to lose your broadcasting license.

I believe that Rick is still trying to undo things that happened before he took over the station. It is my understanding that it was really in a mess from studio to transmitter when he arrived. These things will take time to fix. He is a good man.

Please refrain from making such assinine comments for the sole purpose of causing others to feel, if only for a brief moment, the misery that is your existence.

Payola is a term most often reserved for radio, and the incidents of broadcasters being kicked off the air in the 50's for playing music that the record companies paid them to. Funny... because now it's totally legal in radio.

Plugola is reserved more for TV, and is still a huge no-no. That's why broadcasters shouldn't take gifts or favors, and many are contractually obligated not to.

RE: 2:34 PM

Really? It is? Funny, since I'm not male, not in the news business and not the person you directed your comments to.

I have never even seen Rick whomever... in person or otherwise.

I just think it rather rude to bring someone's name into a discussion that wasn't even about them.

Obviously, you've got a personal issue with Mr. Heverling and the correct way to address that would be with him.. not by making insinuations on a blog.

OK, Miss Thang, then you know nothing about the topic or about KARK, so then perhaps your best option is to sit back and read and learn about the situation. Seeing as you know nothing about Rogala or Heverling or anything or anyone else related to the topic, perhaps you can go trolling someplace else for the evening or sit back, read and learn before posting. Jeez, do the newbies need and FAQ on this blog?

considering the "30 minute segment with Tracy Douglass" is a paid program, perhaps the $5000 investment actually went towards paying for that program, the web content and the :30 spots. the morning show element was probably added value (something EVERYONE in the market does for their advertisers) and has no money attached. wouldn't that make all this legal?

How much do you think that the U of A in in debt to KATV? Do you think that Old Frank has been close to that station for three decades.

Rick is actually a pretty good guy. But can we not forget that he is also an astute businessman? Yes, he is a nice guy but will also do what it takes to further his business and profits-something I’m sure everyone here does as well. And to 2:03, wow, you are bitter. What’s up with that?

At 10:05 AM, August 20, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with the last poster. Business is business and I'm guessing that Rick is a lot like all of us in that he doesn't like all the change that our business has taken on. However, he handles the change with the right attitude and tries to make it work for everyone the best he can. I for one appreciate that. I might not always like the outcome but I know he is doing all he can.

The act of "heverling" can get you arrested in 17 states and some of the territories. One who "heverls" is not a very nice person. Those who've become victims, or "heverlees" often find themselves angry, bitter, and a little confused. So, if you've been heverling lately, seek help.

Rick Rogala is one of the most upstanding people I have ever known or worked for. The news department decides stories FIRST, Sales is THEN given the option of selling additional ad time around them. It's no different than selling a Golf store commercials during the Masters or US Open. It's a logical fit. As a former KARK'er, Rick Rogala is the one I miss most. And the management team he has assembled, from Heverling in News to the various other managers are all amazing people who Rick works hard at keeping them working together. Attitudes are good across the board. Should all stations be so lucky.

Yeah, management is "good." How many other markets have you worked in? Are you actually in "news" or do you op a cam someplace? If you've had years of experience, very nice, I'll take your word for it, but it doesn't match up with my own experience. They're weak.
