KAIT Losing Two Reporters

This from a tipster: "KAIT is losing Marsha Mays and Brett Garrett. Mays is going into media sales while Garrett is taking a job anchoring sports in Tupelo at WTVA. Tough break for a station already down a reporter and a sports anchor."

Not much of a loss if you ask me. looks like the new GM is starting to clean house? Good for him! Maybe he can get better than sub-par talent there.

Who cares?

The people in Jonesboro care... or do y'all forget that we exist too?

I thought KAIT was WMC and KATV's NEA bureau.

There is actually a station there?

Actually, the New GM did not clean house with those two, although he could stand to get rid of a few people. It is my understanding that they are leaving of their own accord. Best wishes to both!

As long as Beth Hunt, Kristin Fisher, Jessica Dean and Amanda Manatt stay at KATV and Melissa Simas stays at KARK who cares? All is well!!!!

Marsha and Brett are good reporters. Loss for KAIT.

Good lucky guys!

Sounds like GM is cleaning house, why would Garrett go do sports elsewhere when it sounds like there is already a sports job at current station.

There's a sports job open there already? Isn't football about to start or are all those guys just dancing around in pads in 100 degree weather because they're high?

Oh, wait. Isn't this the station that doesn't have sports at 6 or something? Can you say cha-ching for the ROCK!!!!

GM should make the three legged chicken report. More three legged chicken!!!!!!!!!

Used to work with some of those guys out at K-Late and I beleive the phrase being bouncing around Jonesboro is "mass exodus".

Rumor is LOTS more to jump ship soon...

If you don't want to work there you're taking up space for someone who does. No one put a gun to your head to make you work there. I can think of plenty of places worse to work. And as far as the pay, it sucks everywhere.

Plenty of places worse to work, probably...but in television in Arkansas??? LOL!

Pretty sure this entire blog will back me up in saying KAIT is about the worst staion in Arkansas. A fairly decent station in the late 90's has seriously fallen off. WMC & KATV at least milk them for what they can, which watching from my view in Little Rock, isn't much.

I'm sure that place is like any other small market, one giant editing bay for making resume tapes.

It's funny to look at IP addresses, time stamps, history on computers, and comments that are left on here.

Why do some of you act like you don't work at KAIT?

By the way, It's not that bad...

It's not as big of a deal as it is being made out. KAIT still has reporters and anchors. The show will still go on. They still have talent. While it appears there is a large turnover rate, I am willing to bet it isn't anything more than another small market would experience. Since no one is "holding a gun to someone's head" that could explain why the employees are leaving.

KAIT is not that bad. I work there and I've worked at other stations in larger markets and as far as resources go, KAIT is loaded. A new newsroom bigger than some Little Rock stations, with all digital technology... totally tapeless, shooting on P2 format with 13 new cameras and gear, 5 edit bays and three laptops with new Edius editing software, and a new digital control room in the process, plus a new news and weather set is on the way, with a possible new graphics package to follow. For market 170 plus and a one station market, things are darn good. As far as talent, it's the nature of a small market with small pay... it's a training market, you hire first time reporters, train them, and once they turn into good reporters, they move on to bigger markets. The anchor talent is solid and in many cases, better than some of the anchors in Memphis and Little Rock. The product we put out is better than respectable, many days it's top rate, and considering we don't have the crime and breaking news of a bigger market, we actually have to work harder and enterprise for our news, unlike Little Rock and Memphis. For the most part, those are scanner driven newscast markets.

Does KAIT have it's share of problems, absolutely, but so does evey other TV station in the country. No matter where you go, it's the same circus, different clowns, but at some, the popcorn is stale, that's not the case at KAIT.

Cangrats to Marsha and Brett, both hard workers and I'm excited for them and their new opportunities. I'm sure there will be others that leave in the next year and they'll all be replaced by someone looking to get their start in TV. I promise you, KAIT is a great place to get that start, full of resources and opportunities for anyone willing to work hard and learn the business.

In reply to the worst "staion" in Arkansas, well I just can't agree with that. I have worked many jobs in my life both in television and radio and outside of the field and I know that this place is not the worse place to work. It is a job like any other, some days you want to come to work and some you don't. Some days you like your boss, some days you don't, grow up and get over it, take pride in what YOU do and set the example for others.
I personally will miss Brett and Marsha, I enjoyed their contributions to the mix and am sad to see them go. Just when you get the kids trained, new ones walk in the door. The cycle begins again.

kait airs what they have to report on in the area, which is what people want to see. they don't have several shootings or killings every night like memphis does. which is great. if it wasn't for killings or the mayor in memphis ,or the fords, the memphis stations would be out of news.the only thing k8 needs to improve on is sports people, and their weather team is the it has been in 3 years.the chief is fine and chris is ok not to be a met,but if sarah is a met.i am a goddess, which i am far from one.she might say in one sentence it is not going to rain and in the next look for rain over night.this is one area that local people count on . experienced ,with the seals to back it up.i think k8 needs a big change on morns. and weekends. this is only my forecast for future improvements.

What is wrong with their sports department? "HE" does a good job. Guess he will start working 7 days a week once football season starts. Still doesn't make sense why a reporter there is leaving to do sports somewhere else. Must be a good situation in Jonesboro.

If you haven't heard, they don't have a sports department. They have one guy. And poor Craig has to pick up the slack. Maybe management should have thought about that before they cut down their personnel.

Guess they ran out of money before they could buy morale?

Geoff Morale would never come to KAIT. ;)

lolrofpmp!

sadly, no morale can be bought today kiddos because the K8'ers have gone and spent all of our cash on Geoff Morale's eye brow waxing macine.

Hopefully they can use the money saved from morale to buy more round reporters that wear ill fitting clothes. Better yet a sports person that can do sports to get in shape. Get the GM and the three legged chicken together we need to have a meeting.

Put Marsha next to those four, and she makes them look like an old plate with a crack in it.
