This from a tipster:"Dale had been looking to make a change in the promotions department f ormonths. Finally pulled the trigger and gave the job to the executive news producer."

I am just so glad that "7 is news" shit is over. I hated that. Especially during a newscast when we would hear "7 is news" "7 is sports" "7 is weather", I was really confused as to what 7 was.

I am 7:48 PM (above) and I agree 8:23. Spirit of Arkansas is fantastic and I have always associated it with KATV. I was sad that they stopped using it but glad it is back.

Anybody know if brighter graphics will come to 7 News now that they are again the Spirit of Arkansas.

I like "SUPER 7" myself. Anything else is fluff.

Not just the head of promos. Most of the department quit earlier this year.

Spirit of Arkansas is great and Super 7 is classic. I'm hoping they bring back brighter graphics. Their graphics have been horrible for about five or six years. Color tv - should have color not shades of gray!!!

Are they rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic over there?

What? They are the dominant player in this market, like it or not.

A lot of people there feel they would be number one across the board if it wasn't for such a horrible promo dept the past few years. This is a great move, 7 promos couldn't have been much worse.

At 10:40 PM, July 18, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No promos could save that morning show. Lipstick on a pig doesn't make for a good date.

Just because they are a dominant number one doesn't mean the ship's not sinking. Ratings don't equal a health and well run company. Everyone on this board should know that by now.

KATV"s been exposed. The 65 y/o retiree in Carlisle may not notice, but the past several years haven't been kind to Little Rock's nominal ABC affiliate.

Lets see: a news set that looks as dated as the sawdust floor Eddie Sutton inherited in 1974; Constant turnover in reporters; Treating High Definition as if it were closeted crossdressing; The creeping influence of informercial programming; and Dale, hiring Dale III while Central Arkansas may not see Dale, Jr in the fall.

I'd be happy if they could get the freakin corporate bean counters to shell out some capital for reinvestment in their physical facility. It's rapidly becoming one of the seediest properties in downtown, and is definitely dragging down the renaissance movement in the city's old core. The message they're sending now is that they're only interested in taking money OUT of the market. The pretty people are just tools.

Here's a suggestion, why don't they get rid of all the inbreds there...oh wait...get rid of all the...hmmm, I can't find the exact words to describe the "redneck-ocracy" there. They have no diversity there, and they deserve every negative attention they get or feedback from people. How's the family, Randy??? Also, remind Dale III not every Black person goes to UAPB, and make sure grandpa doesn't used the words "colored gal" when referring to Pam Smith. I don't think she likes that. LOL

This HAS to be somebody at KARK barking from their new digs in the shadow of the state capitol.

I haven't seen KARK, KTHV or Fox invest in a satelite studio like KATV has down in the River Market.
Ask any of the vendors down there what station has done more for their business or local investments.

As far as any of the stations' primary interest being taking money out of the market, last I checked none of them are non-profits. And none of them are locally-owned either.

At 6:41 PM, July 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me start by saying that the current diversity at ALL the stations is abysmal.

But all KATV has to do is hire ONE black reporter and every station in the market will have TWO on-air African-Americans.

KARK: Tonsall and Betton
FOX 16: Terrell and Woodruff
KTHV: Edwards and Bryant
KATV: Smith

The real story is the lack of black men in on air positions. Mark Edwards is the ONLY person in the entire market...and he isn't on much. That is truly a shame.

Speaking of KATV's River Market Studio, why don't they make more use of it than just GMA? I've always been shocked they haven't used it during Riverfest for ALL their news broadcasts. Maybe they should use it on Friday nights when the River Market is booming, or during other popular downtown events? Seems to me it could go a long way helping them seem more local in the metro. Most times it just sits there empty. USE IT!

I've always taken notice and watched when KARK has taken their entire newscast out at places like Riverfest and the AR State Fair. It's caused me to actually tune in to them some and stay there, after I abandoned them during the News 4/Al Sandubrae era.

BEING LOCAL WINS!

There will never be a black male on KATV, especially in sports. The reason why black women are more likely to be on air (in this market) is because black women are less threatening. All the negative and inducing stereotypes of black men have been conditioned in people's minds with the addition that WE (black men) are a bunch of angry savages that rob and pillage. When you turn on the news, 65 to 70 percent of the time when there's a crime in the city (depends on what crime they choose to report), the perpetrator is a black male. This is a social conditioning that reaffirms all the negative stigmas hovering over black men. There are good and bad in all people. The "big whigs" (probably white people in high positions) choose not to deal with black men, unfairly casting this broad brush on ALL black men, missing out on good men out there that can become beneficial to their employer, and themselves as well. When watching the news, these kids have no one they can look up to and inspire to become. When a 13 year old black youth watch the news (if they do LOL), all they see is criminals being taken in, shootings, etc. There is no one anchoring they can relate to. Yes, I believe in parental responsibility, but at the same time, give these kids a little incentive; if they just so happen to watch 7,4,16, or 11, you may have the next Bryant Gumbel or Ed Bradley from the area and don't even know it (Did I just say Bryant Gumbel?? LOL)

"When you turn on the news, 65 to 70 percent of the time when there's a crime in the city (depends on what crime they choose to report), the perpetrator is a black male."

What do you mean, "depending on what crime they chose to report"? It's not the media's fault that the perpertator is a black male more often than not. Do you honestly think the media reports crimes based on the color of the suspect's skin? That is obsurd!

Always claiming the status of victim is not cool.

"When a 13 year old black youth watch the news, all they see is criminals being taken in, shootings, etc. There is no one anchoring they can relate to."

What kind of sense does that make? Are you saying the media should not report "news" in order to be sensitive to the 13-year-old black youth? Facts are facts. And it's the media's job to report them.

As unfortunate as it may be that there are not more black anchors in this market...that should not be a factor a young black person uses to identify himself or herself.

A person's identity should be established by his own abilities and characteristics...not what they see on television by someone who happens to have the same skin color they do.

The reason race is such a big issue today is that certain people want to blame their misfortune or lack on something. And since they refuse to blame it on their own shortcomings, they choose to blame it on something else... like "everyone is against me because I am a black male."

At 2:44 PM, July 23, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are you serious??? I have no problem with the media reporting the news. You seem very naive, when it comes to what the station reports and what they choose to report. There have been instances where there can be a crime committed (white collar or domestic) and it just so happens that the perpetrator is some big whig that funds or supports the station, and they choose not to report it. Would you rather see some CEO get arrested for drunk driving and resisting arrest, or would you rather hear about a black-on-black shooting to reaffirm those stereotypes about blacks, so whites would assert that "I told you that's the way they are" attitudes. Be honest and stop fooling yourselves. There are little to no positive stories about black youths, and no one representing a certain demographic of people. A crime is a crime, I honestly get that part, but what I'm saying is that there is no balance. This is the same social conditioning that makes people believe when something is black, it equivalent to evil, dark, etc. (ie. Webster's Dictionary). I am in no way a victim, and I don't believe in the whole victimizing blacks to assure "white guilt" for anything; I could care less. Whites (or anyone else) don't control my destiny. I believe there is a cause...as well as an effect, so don't get pissed off when there are hidden evils and "Good ole boy" corporate exclusions from certain angles of the spectrum.

At 2:54 PM, July 23, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since when is "black male" a good description? It's the police and the media that are lazy. If the police want help they should give a better description then "black male" That doesn't narrow it down.

Answer this question for me, from an existential standpoint, "Why would a city that is over 45 percent African American, have a demographic that watches the same amount of news as anyone else, do not have an African American anchor during the newscast?" So before some of you respond with that "Are you saying whites aren't good enough to anchor in the black demographic?" bull#&%@, can you honestly answer this question wholeheartedly and honestly? If so, I would like to know...seriously.

Regarding racisim in LR newsroms (seeing that this thread has changed subjects:

A few years ago I was being shown some footage by a news producer for a puff piece story of some kind. As the producer was winding the tape to the footage she wanted to show me we fast forwarded over some footage of a crime scene.

In the footage was a grisly shot of a dead man and woman in a car. The man was leaning out of the window and dried blood was running down his arm down the side of the car.

Needless to say this was startling considering we were looking for something warm and fuzzy. The producer apologized and told me that the tape contained some unused raw camera footage from a few days ago.

I commented that I could understand not wanting to use such a shot on the air, but that I didn't remember seeing anything about the story at all. She shrugged and said that another black on black killing in LR wasn't big news.

I asked her how she knew the killer's were black and she just shrugged again. I then asked her if it would have made any difference if the couple in the car had been white. She said that it probably would have, in fact they might even have been able to use the footage with a some blurring and creative editing.

I asked her if she was okay with that? She said that it didn't matter what she thought, that the news director called the shots. At this point she was ready to stop talking about this and get on with her project.

So we went back to looking for shots of smiling white people. I don't know if they ever caught the killer(s) or not. But that's okay as the victims weren't really newsworthy.

The puff piece we were working on aired in the top block that night.

Arkansas still has a racial problem and it did not stop back at 1957 and today it is still going on.You can go to this website called the southern poverty law center www.splc.org or www.tolorance.org and see how many hate groups are here in Arkansas and their is 22 of them. Out of these powerful group is called the christian alliance and council of christian alliance and here in Arkansas they are the ones influencing people not to be hire dealing with race. Race is Arkansas downfall and Arkansas will never recover from the 1957 incident and the other incident at at hall high the Effie bowers incident.

First of all, existential also means EXPERIENCE, there are other meanings of the word, so before you check somebody, make sure you get the facts. Also, let's not stray from the story at hand. American Heritage Dictionary

2. Based on experience; empirical.

Considering the usual level of intelligence often displayed on this site, the original poster should probably have asked the question like this: Based on your experience...

At least that was the way I read the post originally.

As to answering the question, beats me.

If there is any reasoning beyond racism, it probably has something to do with the notion that black people aren't a good demographic. Seems odd to me, the last time I checked black people bought stuff too.

Only the truly innocent believe that news isn't at least partly influenced by the sales staff. While we are worrying about the racial makeup of the on air news talent, we should also be concerned about a station's sales executives. If stations are currently hurting in sales, and are really wanting to broaden their market, maybe they should look at the diversity of their sales team.

If I were in business to make money, I wouldn't ignore such a large segment of my potential market.

First of all, I'm black and Power 92 is a stereotypical joke. A bunch of clowns playing clown music (fake R&B and no Hip Hop but that's another story). But, let's go back to the comment about St Louis. Why the f*&# would I go to St Louis, I don't live there, I live in Little Rock. Why would someone present a question asking in all sincerity about the lack of African American anchors, all of a sudden it's a racist question?(Not blaming the forum particularly, just generalizing) To 10:43, I feel what you are saying about the sales team, but as far as KATV, there has never been a black person in sales (maybe 1 in the last 15 years), so that may be another open forum within itself later on down the line LOL. Maybe someone white has to say it's a "Good Ole Boy" system, cause if I say it, I'm deemed a racist and a victim. I'm just trying to raise the level of consciousness on some of you that are honestly living in 1957, therefore giving 1957 reasons why we live in a state that still have these backwater views. In other words, don't make excuses, if there is logical reasoning and a systematic way of the hiring process in the Little Rock market without "going there", I honestly would like to know.

It seems to me that the level of diversity in AR TV news is dropping over time. Without trying very hard I can think of a half dozen non-white reporters/anchors from 10-15 years ago. Now, not so much.

Part of the problem is that the TV market is shrinking and fragmenting. This causes those running the circus to be scared and make short term decisions in a desperate attempt to save their ratings and revenues.

It is easy to see how managers can convince themselves that Audience = Bubba and start programming for a least common denominator white male audience. Add to that the fact that younger viewers are abandoning the TV for video games and the internet, and Bubba gets older and older.

This is very short sighted and possibly suicidal. Arkansas has a very diverse population these days. Why there isn't more Hispanic targeted programming on the three main old school stations I don't know. There is also a measurable Asian population as well. Why they would ignore these potential growth demographics is beyond me.

If I had to guess, most of it is simple laziness and lack of imagination. This is possibly understandable when there is lots of low hanging fruit, but these days the lower branches are getting barer and barer. In this sense, racism is not only bad from a societal point of view, it is bad business practice.

"Why there isn't more Hispanic targeted programming on the three main old school stations"

Because THEY need to learn English, not the other way around. Why should we cater to mostly illegal aliens?

Okay, lets pretend for a second that your notion that THEY need to accommodate us and we don't owe them a damned thing is somehow related to reality.

I'm running a TV station. I'm in the business of selling, thorugh sponsorship, TV programs that people might want to watch. I don't have any problem selling silly celebrity pimp shows and mind numbing reality TV to Bubba and Bubbette. Maybe I'd like to diversify my audience base. GalavisiĆ³n is great, but not so much local news or programming. It might be as simple as adding subtitles to the regular broadcast.

How do I as a broadcaster make that pay? That's what an energetic and resourceful sales department is for. Good producers help too. Maybe that's not the way to salvation, but I'd better think of something, because the internet is eating my lunch.

And moving back to your comment, the notion that all local spanish speaking people are illegal immigrants IS racist. In addition to LEGAL Mexican immigrants, Arkansas is home to many tyepes of Spanish speaking people.

I personally know people from (in no particular order) Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Columbia, Porto Rico, Guatemala, and Panama. Hell, I even know a very nice lady from Spain. Most of them speak English much better than I speak Spanish. They all consume Spanish language media in various forms. They have money to spend with advertisers.

Those that don't speak English, or don't speak it very well, are here to stay whether you like it or not. Isolating them into linguistic ghettos will not aid them in joining the main stream of American society.

If America is a melting pot, that doesn't mean turning all new comers into white, English speaking Bubbas. It wouldn't hurt Bubba to learn a thing or two about other cultures. It is broadening. Makes one less provincial. But hey, we wouldn't want local television to be educational, now would we. Kiss of death.

Great insight (mostly)....yes the thread went off the tracks quite a few comments ago ;)

KATV's continuing practices are already hurting them long-term. The Bubbas in Brinkley, Forrest City, DeWitt are dying off. That leaves only the ones in B/B and Cabot, etc. The current generation doesn't wait until 6pm or 10pm to get the "Official Dispatch" from Dale and Company on the news it deems fit to broadcast.

The sooner KATV realizes this the better off or they will become another pre-Gannett KTHV or worse a TV version of KAAY or KLRA (radio).

I don't really believe that the forum strayed off too much *snickers*. I think that these are issues that needed to be discussed. Whether it is KATV's promotions changes, KATV's racist or non racist hiring policy, Randy Dixon's wife leaving his a&# (maybe not that, but Karma and funny at the same time), Illegal immigrants, or African American anchors, discussions like these help because if we don't address history and in time move forward with alleviating the ills and mistakes of early American societal exclusions based on class, race, gender, religion, etc., we are doomed to repeat it. Food for thought.

Some of you people are amazing. None of what I wrote earlier was directed specifically at KATV. I was commenting on Little Rock TV stations in general.

Instead of taking potshots at the competition, why don't you work on improving your own stations policies and quality. What a novel idea, competing by doing a better job rather than running down your fellow media professionals. I admit, it is probably a bit harder, but I wouldn't be surprised if the viewers found it more useful than some gossipy personal attack on an industry insider forum.

Note to previous poster. That third sentence was an amazing run on. You tried to cram way too many thoughts into a single sentence. By trying to compose a complex, and seemingly impressive sounding sentence, you have not only failed to impress, but muddled its meaning.

Here is a quick and dirty makeover that maintains, I hope, your intended meaning. Note that I left out the totally irrelevant personal attack, along with the rambling parenthetical phrase. I have also included the quotation that you were attempting to paraphrase. Google is your friend.

rewrite:

Whether we are talking about a TV stations promotional changes or its racial hiring policies, discussions like these are certainly helpful. We must address history and learn from those who came before us. To quote George Santayana, "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it."

I want to thank the previous post aka my 5th grade English teacher for correcting on what is considered a run on sentence...thanks.

PS Make sure when you try to sound smart and google words, try to get a clue. If you don't like the forum, no one asked you to keep your ass on it reading people's comments and getting offended. Also, I'm sure that the person who previously wrote that post gives a rats left nut whether you quote George Santayana or George Jefferson. Whether it's a quote from someone, an everyday saying, or even rambling (as you so eloquently put it), don't waste time commenting, if you feel that you are above writing in a forum, much less correcting and spellchecking posts. LOL
