KTHV ND Leaving; Headin' to NWA to Work in PR
Arkansas Business News is reporting KTHV News Director Mark Raines is leaving the station after 10 years at the station. Raines is heading to Northwest Arkansas to become the head of PR for Arkansas for Chesapeake Energy Corp. of Oklahoma City. Raines' last day will be July 27.

I thought it was great that all three News Directors were from Arkansas. KLRT doesn't count.

Mark isn't moving to Northwest Arkansas. Chesapeake's office will be in Little Rock with a field office in Searcy.
Look for management at KATV to start falling. No not the ND but others.

here's an example of why KLRT will never compete with 4,7, or 11. On Friday they lead their 5pm show with "breaking news" that two big rigs had wrecked in Grant County...they had no video..nothing. It's one thing that they missed the story and didn't have anything on it to lead their 5pm show (4, 7 and 11 all had video)... but it is another thing to call it "breaking news" News is not breaking when it's 5pm and the accident happened at about 12:30pm! Especially since the other stations had time to shoot their stories and bring the video back to Little Rock! KLRT continues to be sensational like this and that will continue to cause them problems. They call things "investigations" that are not investigations... my favorite was their KILLER EXCALATOR story during one sweeps month. I didn't see the story... all I saw was the promo and it made me laugh out loud!

Hey everyone, what's you favorite of all the "Paid Programming" spots on KARK, KATV, or KTHV? It's almost as big of a revenue generator as Sunday mornings and the church services.
So who does everyone think will replace Mark? There are some people shaking in their boots that he is gone.
If your contract is up soon and the new ND is not impressed with you, it's time to get some resume tapes out. If you are not pulling your weight, you had better start if you want to keep your job! If you have a high salary and low ratings, uh oh.
Once again, the wrong person takes the fall. Guess you don't get to be high up on the chain by taking the blame for putting all the people below you through the ringer with your bizzare, loser ideas. Yes, he's the Wizard on Izard.

Word is now that Jansen is gone early next year. Maybe they should consider her for ND. Just think if Larry moves on or gets the boot, all power at 11 will be with the women!
Who will replace Mark? Someone who believes the internet is more important for your story than the airwaves. A person who believes people rush home from work, plop on the couch and get their news from thv.com. It will be someone who believes people will happily work harder for less and be willing to tote their own camera or ask a passerby to hold it for them while they do their on-camera magic. If not, don't forget; just stand to the side of the shot and walk on in.

Get off the KLRT can't compete. They've been on three years and already have better numbers than KARK for the late news, and are a point behind at 5:00 after starting that show up just four months back.
So please get off your ivory tower, they've done better than anyone would've expected - the ratings prove that. You bitter shop folks may not like what they're doing, but viewers apparently do.
Mark Raines is and always will be a dork that wanted to be infront of the camera so bad. But he could only be a producer/ butt kisser.
He treated people like dirt, and never had a nice thing to say about anything.
He had no idea how to make KTHV better because he had never seen anything but Little Rock. He judged talent on looks and the ability to "big man" them.
Some people should be shaking in thier boots. Dead weight sits in the newsroom with titles like senior producer.
Anne Jansen would be a great ND. But she would have to show up more than 3 hours a day. But then again Raines showed up long enough to play games on his computer and "YES SIR" Larry.

The reason is that KLRT employs people so simple that they can be goaded into making absolute idiots of themselves and their station by association with the mere mention of their call letters. It's cheap entertainment. Granted, it's almost as guilty a pleasure as getting a retarded kid to act up in school, but who could resist? To watch someone with a 9:00 newscast, time and time again, go on and on about "the ratings", what "they prove", and how "scared" everyone is of them is absurd.
KLRT's numbers do not come from competition with "the big three" so they can't say their numbers are better than anyone else. They're claiming to be in third place with their 9:00 show. Well, who exactly did they beat? No one else is doing news at 9:00.
Fox 16's "3rd place" claim is intended for their sales people to use as leverage in hocking spots and for their promotions department to spin into an achievement the viewer won't make the effort to question when Donna claims it in a promo. Most of us here are real news people. Don't expect us to recognize you as being in third place with a newscast that does not compete with us head on. You know as well as we do that it doesn't work that way. If you would like us to acknowledge you for where you truly stand among us then start talking about your 5:00 - the only show you have where we legitimately come head to head - and we will gladly crown you dead last place.

The topic here is that the THV news director is leaving. I don't care if you think KLRT will pull a 20 rating in July, that's not the topic. The fact is Mark has been there for a long time, and a newcomer could easily come in and make some major changes. The divas will quit if they actually have to work for their 6 figure salaries. Their evening ratings are so up and down there is no consistancy (except their morning show). Mark went to bat for a lot of people and let some people get away with laziness.

5:04 you are correct, and Mark put up with a lot of crap from those divas. I know for a fact if a certain individual is promoted from within, there will be a few that will just outright quit because they'll have to do more than just apply makeup or show up for work minutes before a newscast.
Mark is/was a good news director. He will be missed. You don't spend 10 years as news director and leave without reason. Why is he leaving? Better Job? Better Pay? Maybe. Or he was fed up with the continual stripping away of news resources needed to put on a good newscast. Red flags are waiving around THV. There were folks in shock when they found out he was in fact resigning. Those same folks are no longer protected. There will be more changes in the coming weeks and months.

Comment here from someone that DOESN'T work at the stations but does work in advertising....the fact that 16's 9PM is number 3 is noteworthy. You say it doesn't matter because it doesn't compete head-to-head with the other 3 stations. Fact is, late news money that I spend for my clients is late news money. Doesn't matter if it's a 9PM or 10PM newscast.
The new ND will actually make people work. Wow. What a new concept. The only anchors at THV that really work are Craig, Tom, and Liz. When is the last time you saw Robyn or BJ off the couch? When is the last time Ed did a live shot? It's hard to work with people who think they shouldn't have to make an effort but deserve big bucks. At least Craig and Tom work for their big bucks.

Ed does do liveshots from time to time, if you think he should do more, than take it up with the producers. You are right though, BJ and Robyn make alot of money to work only 3-4 hours a day. I hear that Robyn doesn't get to the station till 4:30 and the show hits at 5:00... and she leaves by 8:00. The one I hear doesn't do anything around that station, is Queen Anne. What a waist!!!!

ALL of the morning and evening anchors at THV make a lot of money. Some of them are worth it, some of them are not. If an outsider comes in and sees "entitlement" attitudes from those who do not put in an honest day's work for their large paycheck, who knows what will happen.
I hear Steve Martone is interviewing for the ND job, but it has been promised to Vic Schedler.

I don't think it's appropriate to pick on BJ. He, afterall is 72 and has been reading news for 25 plus years at THV. He has worked an eight hour day for most of that time. He's tired (and although in great shape for someone who's 72), is beginning to wear down a bit. He's old school, doesn't like change and is ready to retire at the end of this contract. Cut him some slack. He's earned a 4-hour day.
Robyn has a deal with the boss otherwise she'd just stay home with her kids. You get what you can get. In lieu of $, maybe Robyn thought it was more important to take off earlier in the day to spend time with her family.

Audas has declared himself to be "Executive News Director." He's gonna start spending a lot more time in the newsroom, he says. THV folks are concerned. Mark kept many of Larry's stupid ideas from actually becoming reality. There's nothing to stop them now. As for the anchors - Larry has cut sweetheart deals with just about everyone of them - just ask one of them and they'll tell you. Those anchor salaries are going up, up, up -- while Larry cuts staff size and budget so that he can look good to the Gannett brass. That's all he cares about anyway.
So when people who are full of shit post what do they say to themselves to get over the fact they are posting completely stupid shit on an Arkansas TV gossip blog?

The marketing/brand manager/promotions guy was shown the door and they moved the EP to replace him. Apparently the move had been in the works for a while.
Mark was awesome he had the BEST personality and so friendly. He NEVER used anyone, or kissed any butt. He was very up front about contracts,a nd when he was upset at you he never avoided you. Best of all, he NEVER screamed and always admitted when he was wrong.

Mark Raines had more balls than Audas could ever muster(executive-double secret probation or whatever), he has raisins down there, (his leadership stones) He wouldn't know a gift horse if it dumped on his....in other words it's never felt like a number one station even when it swept the ratings....yes 10:35, Those ideas coming from the man behind the curtain, the wizard of izard, the four-head, are sure good for one thing...culling. That means tossing out. Hey Larry how about we open up a portal to columbia and try transporting like in star trek...we'll need some more laptops for that and Gannett can send some used gear, and you can clear it through Leslie, and have it mis-punched by your overworked staff. Of course the whole time controlling overtime and job postings...we're up to here in your blather!

Does anyone remember the days of "Curly", "Girly", and "Squirrely" when they were at KTHV?
I haven't looked at the blog since I threw my $.02 in a while back, when people here tried to revive my old career story from the dead (it's six years old... I'm still dead... my story was apparently still somewhat alive, ridiculously). However, and as a result, I'll tell a great true story for the bloggers.
On March 1, 2001, when I met my weird tele-demise, I'll never forget the lesson I learned from Mark Raines about managerial communication, through his own words:
I learned my contract wasn't being renewed and that I shouldn't return to the station in person through a VOICE MAIL on my home phone. NO KIDDING! I'll never forget the message, which said, "Hey, Shea... This is Mark... Listen - just wanted to let you know that Gannett decided not to renew your contract, and you shouldn't come back. Anyway, it's Friday afternoon, and I gotta go."
I have been in business management for years since, and I have to tell you that I simply think of this situation and how it made me feel anytime I think of what I should say to employees. It's the portable MBA - I consider that message, and I simply do the opposite. Long-term, happy employees, who feel like human beings, are the result. Ha!!

shea, that's pretty cold of mark to let you go like that. i know some people that didn't have the greatest outlook on the way you handled the tornado situation that one day, but no manager should have handled it like that! it shows a total lack of respect for you, but it looks like they were looking for an excuse to get rid of you anyway. tv people are assholes... except me (outside of this blog of course).
