KHBS/KHOG Touts Ratings Dominance in NWA

From a KHBS/KHOG Press Release:

40/29 News (KHBS/KHOG-TV) continues to dominate news ratings in Northwest Arkansas, according to the latest Nielsen survey.

“40/29 beats the household ratings of KFSM and KNWA in most newscasts. KHOG was the first station to cover Northwest Arkansas, and we remain the news leader,” said Jim Prestwood, President/General Manager of 40/29 News. “We are looking forward to our upcoming expansion to Rogers and providing even better coverage for this dynamic area.”

Mr. Prestwood, describes the station’s commitment: “40/29 News is the leading destination for local TV news in Northwest Arkansas, and our website, 4029TV.com, is the number 1 local TV website. Our mission is to serve our viewers with live, local, late breaking coverage in every newscast, and to serve our advertisers by delivering an audience they simply can’t find anywhere else. And with our new studios, we will be the only station with newsrooms in Fayetteville, Rogers and Fort Smith.”

May 2007 ratings for Northwest Arkansas (Washington, Benton and Madison counties) are from a special report published by Nielsen Media Research. The rating is the percentage of all 148,840 TV households in the 3-county area that are watching a particular newscast, and the share is a percentage of all local news viewers. Local news share for households delivered as follows:

Monday-Friday: Early Morning (6-7AM) Local News

Station HH Rating Local News Share

KHBS-KHOG (ABC) 3.9 40.2

KFSM-TV (CBS) 3.4 35.0

KNWA-TV (NBC) 2.4 24.7

Monday-Friday: Evening News Household Ratings

Station 5p Rating 6p Rating 10p Rating Evening Share

Anybody know details on the new facility in Rogers?

At 11:30 PM, July 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe it's just me but this guy seems to be always defending who they are and what they do. If they are so dominate then why does he constantly need to tell us. KFSM still dominates them in the DMA as a whole and 2 out of the last 3 ratings they have lost the 10pm slot to KNWA in the 3 county area. 5 is the player in the market. I think I just answered my own question. He's trying to justify why he can't win all the market so let's tout we win 3 counties. Sorry, most of the time they do. At least NBC is honest about who they are trying to get to watch them. Nice fence riding.

How many total jobs are they hiring for in Rogers? I read in an article it was like 12,000 sq foot. That has to be some huge increases in the news personal. They never mention that in any of the press releases. So is it increases or jobs from Ft. Smith or Fayetteville moving?

At 11:40 PM, July 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We all know ratings are flawed, so who do you guys think is the top station overall and in NWA?

At 11:50 PM, July 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The Northwest Arkansas counties bring in more money and have more educated viewers who understand good news when they see it.

At 2:22 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

5 news sucks. Plain and simple. It is like watching a high school newscast (aside from Hardin and Garrett).

That station needs to be brought into the 21st cen, hell they need to be brought into the 20th century.

At 5:11 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really could care less about NWA and with 40/29 adding Rogers, it can only mean that the Fort Smith area will CONTINUE to have less and less coverage. If they LOVE the NWA so much..personally they can go and STAY there. We need a television station COMMITED to the people of western Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma.
I could care less what happens in NWA-they need to do a "split" telecast.
Enough said.

At 5:17 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the writer who assumes(and everyone knows what assumes spells when you break down that word), that NWA has MORE educated viewers. That is quite funny. Anyone with a MLA or better will never stoop to such low standards. Then again, this debate does need some writers with less "texture and truth" and more humor and outright untruth!
Enough said--

At 5:32 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

they need to do a "split" telecast.

they tried to do a split about 30 or so years ago...news on 40 and news on 29 then weather and sports simul-cast. don't know why they stopped. timing or cost or whatever.

At 5:49 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Poor, poor KNWA. Maybe it's time for a complete management overhaul.

At 9:34 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Split didn't work then because the population was heavier in the south. Now those 3 counties are equal in size to the rest combined. It may work now but no one is going to try. 40/29 does as much as anyone as far as riding the fence but that makes both sides angry. Best bet is KNWA do the north, KFSM do the south and 40/29 ride the fence. Oh wait, that's what they all do now.

At 9:48 AM, July 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

40/29 covers plenty of river valley stuff, just not enough. However, they still kick Channel 5's butt hands down.

And is KNWA still counting NWA stories from each station? I haven't watched them in a while to check.

What the hell is this sh*t about 40/29 touting ratings. They should tout the fact they got their a** handed to them in the last book.

6am
KFSM 8
KHOG 4

5pm
KFSM 14
KHOG 7

6pm
KFSM 13
KHOG 10

10pm
KFSM 14
KHOG 10

Not much to "tout" about if you ask me. As far as talent goes the Crack Cannon, Razor-Bragg, Robotic Michaels, & Perv Povick isn't much to be bragging about. No pun intended.

Throw all the barbs you want. This is a good market and you should all be glad you have jobs. If you are employed by any of the stations here and for some reason you don't like your particular occupation - then leave and find something you like better. Cheap shots are nothing more than character indicators.
Now - go ahead and flame me to confirm it.

This is what you weather guys forget. I dont care how much you know your stuff and how smart you are, people sitting in their living rooms just dont care.

They want to know if it is going to rain or not, and they want to be told from someone that they trust and see as one of them.

"Best Weathercast" in terms of what? Content? Stage Presence? What?

I can put a robot on KFSM and give it directions to read a forecast and it could probably win a "Best Weathercast" award.

See Brad, here is what sets you apart from Garrett. Garrett knows how people around live. What the culture within the community expects.

People want to see Garrett out on the street, meet him and talk to him. They want to be his friend.

You are outside of the norms within the community.

I know they cant ask certain questions when they interview you at the station, but someone there should have taken one look at you and said, no thanks bud, go on home.

and if you must stay, for god sakes take off those pitiful glasses!!!!

You look like a rodent!!!!!!!!

Who do you imply reads the forecast? KFSM follows the weather service to a T, for example, look back to the so called big winter weather maker they brodcast to their viewers this past winter. They ate it because the Weather Service served it up.....and they were wrong.

The ratings should speak for themselves. When you have to take half the market, and take have the ratings in that section of the market, and try to make your station look good from that, you've got problems.

Say what you want about KFSM, but they've got the DMA locked up, and are getting stronger in NWA. 40/29 for that matter, are losing ground in both sides. Good luck trying to make crap look like gold Mr. Prestwood.

This is how the breakdown goes as far as TV weather people in NWA.

1. Garrett Lewis

2. Kendra Kent

3. Dan Skof

4. Drew Micheals

5. Ted Zarras

Garrett is the hometown guy. I don't care much for him but he is the best in the market.

Kenrda Kent probably has the best pure talent out of anyone in the market. She is going to go very far.

Skof is a good weathercaster and a professional.

Drew is probably the smartest guy out of the entire bunch and a good personality. He is also good at reading the news, the only thing is Drew might be a bite too professional at times.a great, great guy non the less.

I use to not be able to stand ZarrasN but he has gotton a lot better and is moving up the list. Maybe a better fit up north, but is coming around to fit in here.

NWA has good talent. Look for most of these to move on, including Garrett (which is unfortunate, but KFSM cannot afford him).

KHBS is over-rated. Until they get rid of Leslie Wright and Craig Cannon, they can't be taken seriously. I mean who can believe this Cannon guy? Come on, his days are OVER 10 years ago, get rid of that JERK. And Leslie is a nice person, but she is NO Megan McHale, she just is NOT a great speaker or real reporter. Hey Leslie, go back to mornings!
Hey General Manager of KHBS, fire the SOB New Director. He is not only a jerk in real life he is a real "toad" in the news business! Just look at who he has hired! And you all have been dissing Bo Mattingly!
Go Drew Michaels, Jennifer Hale, and Melissa!

At 7:44 PM, July 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not sure when his contact is up, but I have had reliable info state that has Garrett wanting a bigger market for more money.

The most idiotic move 5 could make will be moving Flickenger up to Chief instead of Kent.

When the time comes, porbably within the next 2 years, it will be hard to fill Garretts shoes, but Kendra will be a natural fit into the evening broadcast.

At 10:30 PM, July 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This market over the years has really turned aggressive with severe weather.....and Kendra would be eaten alive during a big event.....she has no credibility! Dan and Drew would have a field day......

Re - this previous comment:
"anyone see the big article about the local stations in the recent NWA Business Journal? I love how it dogs KNWA for getting all of their news from local newspapers. It's about time someone publicly called them on it, and the GM's response is priceless."

That article was bunk - Andrew Jensen couldn't even stay on the topic he was supposed to write about. His little dig at KNWA was not only speculation and baseless -it was downright false.

I took a tally of KNWA reporter stories this week - you be the judge:

*Dirksmeyer Murder trial - duh
*Bella Vista FOIA meeting - reported the day before the papers
*Benton County Coroner follow up - based on a viewer's "Rant" - answered the viewer's question
*Flippin Question re: beetles invading NWA
*Car vs. Chiropractic clinic - this was run after the paper article
*EZ Bake Recall - papers have yet to run this story
*Underwater Search for Minton - papers and KHOG/KFSM have yet to run this story on the R.O.V.
*Biofuels - KNWA reporter in D.C. talked to Boozman about AR economic impact
*Harry Potter book security at local bookstores
*AR Children's Health Stats - was posted at on-line media sources - but not in local papers
*Education and Immigration Bill - local lawmakers reactions
*Stolen Mail - papers and KHOG/KFSM have yet to report on the guy who stole mail from 11 people in Fay
*Bible Toys at WMT - local papers have yet to run this story
*Benton County Coroner Resigns - reported the day before papers
*Sandoval-Vega Hearing - reported a day before local papers
*Cell Tower Fight in Rogers - reported a day before local papers
*Escaped Convict from Washington County - reported a day before local papers
*XNA Prices - taken from a Wall Street Journal report
*BBBQ Fight featuring Bill Underwood - taken from a paper article (and the paper article was CLEARLY credited in the story)
*Bentonville Trash Protest - reported a day before the paper
*New Charter School in Rogers - have yet to see this in local papers
*Mailman Pepper Sprays Puppy - have yet to see this in local papers or KHOG/KFSM
*BioBased Foam Lawsuit - Fayetteville residents say their cheap homes made them sick and have filed a lawsuit. There are SIX families filing suit. Papers have yet to cover this story and KHOG/KFSM have yet to report on it.

That is the rundown on KNWA reporter stories this week. I count 23 - and only 3 were actually taken from a paper.

I'd like to see KHOG and KFSM make the same claim. Put up or shut up.
And to Andrew Jensen...get the facts straight before you fire off another article. That is basic journalism rule #1.

You're looking at it the wrong way. By only looking at reporter stories, you're cutting out a lot of the show... that comes directly from the paper.

Here's the facts: look at their in-betweens... random vos, graphics, etc... all come from the paper, often what's gathered on Topix and put on the net.

Here's a little truth... there are papers in their morning meeting, and stories to run are being circled. They often don't even change them... done verbatim. And it's ENCOURAGED by management. That's the truth.

At 10:02 AM, July 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sara Lasure talent? Then why has she been at KFSM for 5 million years? There's nothing desirable in the River Valley for her to stay. Her boyfriend already left her for a fellow reporter, who's now an anchor. (SMASHLEY BECK)

And let's face it. She and Jarrod get their butts beat by the competition...FOX has had a leg up over them on several stories already.

At 5:13 PM, July 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

When I watch KNWA, I wonder why their reporter packages hardly ever have sound from interviews. And then in the tag they say phone calls weren't returned.

And sometimes it's an easy package where they could just call a PIO who's always around, and who talked to reporters at other stations about the same story.

Is that a style issue or just plain lazy?

The newspaper thing is true, too. I remember two stories Whitney did where it was saying (without interviews of course), "the newspaper reported this" and "the newspaper reported that." And quotes from the paper were voiced. No surprise, at the end it was said phone calls weren't returned.

Anyone could read the paper and do stories like that on the public access channel. Before anyone points fingers about lies, one story I remember specifically like that was about the Benton County coroner right when her drama started a while back.

When I remember other ones, I will post them too.

Of course KNWA's "in betweens" are coming from the papers. So do everybody else's. They're called pacers and they are legitimate stories that are happening around NWA. To ignore those stories completely - just because the paper had them - would be stupid. And to think a news outlet wouldn't check the daily papers is also stupid.
Check out KFSM and KHOG - they are pumping out those "in betweens" from the papers as well - and they are regurgitating word-for-word stuff from AP - which is a crutch KNWA doesn't have to lean on.
As far as "circling" stories in the paper that will make it to KNWA air - that isn't fact.
And yes - KNWA has left "officialdom" and stopped interviewing PIOs, mayors and other various "guys in ties". It isn't lazy...as a matter of fact...it is quite the opposite. Reporters are told to find "personal sound" or don't run any sound at all. You want to see PIOs?? You wanna hear about the "perp who fled on foot" and other cop talk??
Fine...watch the other guys. You can get your fill of lazy reporting over there.

Thanks for gracing this board with your presence, Mr. Pickey. I heard you could get in some deep pockey for posting here from your stations. Way to rebel.

Legit news stations don't use the paper for stories... because it's all news that happened yesterday. Sure, sometimes you don't cover a story the day it happened, and you pick it up the day after... and sometimes the paper scoops you, but as far as using the paper as a "source of news"... it's not done. You do your own work... and no, the other two stations don't get their stuff from the paper. Hell, even your "sister station" KARK rags you for using the rags... don't try to hide it.

It's a good tip sheet... but it shouldn't comprise 75% of every newscast... and unfortunately, at NWA it does.

PS: the no 'guys in ties' thing is and always will be retarded, and a straight move from "News Directing for Dummies." People want to hear what happened... they don't care what the person telling them is wearing, or what they do for a living. Hell, most people would rather hear it from a credible source than some yayhoo on the street.

At 2:10 AM, July 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yep. And how about reporting the entire story? "Guys in ties" is a load of crap...remember, that's not the only person you want to hear from, but they are also the people we taxpayers fund, and we'd like to hear what the hell they have to say for themselves, too. How about that? Or is it you just don't want to upset any of those "guys in ties" like the small army of them that control your business up in Rogers? You guys would never be caught ruffling any feathers or po'ing the "officials." It's just wussy reporting, and it always has been.

At 8:32 AM, July 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let KNWA do as they do. It gives the mayors, PIOs and city leaders more time for us.

I haven't watched KNWA in months. Are the reporters still voicing newspaper articles and quotes verbatim?

Again, perfect example is that Benton County coroner story. If I watched more often I bet I'd have more.

And also 40 didn't have the 5news 500 good event but it doesn't come close to the Wrigley 500 where you bet on Pete and can't lose.

What 40 did have at 5 was the breaking news shooting story at the walmart.....they hustled to get that done!

At 12:39 PM, July 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah...ch 5 was left in the dust of the shooting story yesterday.

At 4:44 PM, July 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

YES - 40/29 sure did have that breaking news on the shooting at 500p. A MAP! Whew - those are tough to get on the air. Bout as hard as getting your package ideas out of the paper!

Actually 40 was live at the scene at 5....they broke the story at the top of the A block, got the shot up, and then went on a few blocks later. I don't remember 5 doing anything????

I believe 5 had a reporter call into the 6pm show live, which they're starting to do way too often for television. Reporter call-ins are just lame. This isn't radio!

And what's up with them showing a dead person on the ground in puddles of blood? You wouldn't want to see your brother or grandmother on the news like that. Absolutely classless!

KNWA is doing so low in the ratings.Thats why their only cover 3 counties. Here is a sentence in this article on arkansas business to prove it.Prestwood said 40/29 has "worthy competitors" in the market but only named KFSM as one of them. Wiith only his station and KFSM covering the entire 11-county DMA and with KNWA so low in the ratings, it's clearly a two-horse race.

Anyone at 5 or 40/29 want to tell us where you were Sunday night for the "Son Kills Dad w/ a Rock" story? Saw KNWA had a live report at the top of their 1000p. Where were they? Making maps?

KNWA was #1 at 10pm in those three counties in November and February - but, yes, dropped to #3 (a tenth of a point behind KFSM) in May.

Let Prestwood keep thinking and saying KNWA isn't competition. His actions speak louder. As in moving his FAY office/studio and part of his FSM office to Rogers. Hasn't KNWA been up there for a while now?

And if KNWA isn't that big a deal - why does he keep squaking about his NWA numbers? He's supposed to be worried about the whole market - not just the three northen counties.

With the Hooter's opening in Ft. Smith I think Ashley Beck would make a great Hooter's girl. She meets the criteria.

How about because 40 is second overall? If they're number one somewhere, they're going to tout it... it has nothing to do with KNWA. If KNWA didn't exist (it does still exist, right?) he'd still be doing it.

prestwood would probably write an article about a good bowel movement if he could, wouldn't make it interesting to anyone else though. seems like a tool to me or maybe a spool (they're less useful).

Dear Mr. Prestwood:

If 40/29 is "it on a stick" - why are all of the stories on your "most looked at website" Thursday afternoon all a day old?

The comments about Kendra Kent being chief are crazy. When there has been severe weather in the past she is so pathetic in explaning and conveying the important information that you would probably be safer to just look out a window.

And its also really annoying for her to constantly be talking about the weather being perfect for taking a walk. What she needs to do is take a hike. =)

a brief comment was announced on the early edition at 5 about something dangerous in the mail. Then there would be more on the story at 6. If it is that dangerous, why should you wait to tell us at 6?

I love Channel 5 (KFSM) because they are so consistently amateurish in the their technical proficiency. Many of their reporters don't do a very good job of reading prepared remarks, and they have an annoying habit of pointing out the obvious in order to use a hokey graphic - "standing by live in the newsroom...[show graphic]" What do they expect we might think -- someone taped and delayed in the newsroom or come back from the dead in the newsroom?

When they do get a reporter who is proficient, they don't keep him/her very long. Matt Splett was beyond photogenic [read: cute] and he could read very well. He brought some badly needed consistency to Channel 5. Darrin Bob looks like your overweight uncle, ok, I'll go as far as your overweight and favorite uncle. Bridget Shultz is very likeable, but she too seems to have some difficulty with prepared text. Perhaps she needs bigger fonts.

The best thing about Channel 5 is their penchant for leading their newscasts with the most salacious stories they can dredge up. If the National Enquirer had a TV channel, it would look a lot like Channel 5. They want to give you all the gorey details too and then try to find the most embarrassing hayseed everyman local they can to give a community response. Gotta love it. They help keep Arkansas's image firmly in the backward but "hey they are wearing shoes" category.

KFSM==> They have people in management who have been there too long or people without experience. What can you expect from that? --Exactly what we get.

What's up with these cheezy promotional ads of the anchors--bet that was an "experienced" decision. Check out the new pics on their website of the anchors located at the top--At first I thought it was a mistake--oh no, it looks like they have them unorganized on purpose.

Guess that's what happens when you put people in charge who have no idea of what they are doing--good job guys.
