KTHV and KARK Gain Ground in February Book

Arkansas Business.com has the numbers from the February ratings book. Below are the highlights:

> KTHV is still the overall leader at 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. (4.2 rating, 26 share and 8.4 rating and 29 share, respectively), but KARK is creeping into its territory with a 3.7 rating and 23 share at 5 a.m. and a 6.3 rating and 22 share at 6 a.m.

Veterans Tracy Douglass, Matt Mosler and Mike Francis, alongside the comparatively newer Melissa Simas, has “KARK 4 Today” in solid second ahead of KATV’s 2.9 rating and 19 share at 5 a.m. and 4.8 rating and 16 share at 6 a.m.

> It’s also worth noting that KARK’s traditional stronghold at noon, boosted by its eternal “Dialing for Dollars” shtick, again was far ahead of the pack with an 8.5 rating and 28 share.

> A 12.2 rating and 26 share at 5 p.m., along with a 14.9 rating and 27 share at 6 p.m., has the ABC affiliate well ahead of the other two competing stations, though in year-to-year comparisons KATV has lost some ground in most major demos.

KARK pulled out a second place at 5 p.m. with a 9.4 rating and 20 share, but swapped with KTHV at 6 p.m. The household designated market-area numbers show a tie between KTHV and KARK at 6 p.m., each with an 8.5 rating and 15 share, but KTHV leads in most demos at that hour.

> Channel 11 brought in a 12.5 rating and 25 share weekdays at 10 p.m., while KATV had a 10.9 rating and 22 share. Last February, the ABC affiliate was in the lead with a 12.5 rating and 25.5 share.

I just won't to say I think KLRT,KARK and KTHV have the best news in Little Rock.

WOW! I'm guessing the next press release will be about Randy electing to leave KATV in pursuit of "other" interests.

One of the most watched local newscasts in America is #3 in Arkansas.

looks like 7 just keeps falling... soon those tumbles will be enough for 4 and 11 to catch them at 5 and 6, too. Especially since I heard they lost 5 points at 5pm or 6pm... I cannot remember which show or if it was in share or ratings points.

It'll be interesting to see if in May if Fox 16 steals some numbers from 7 at 5pm since 7's viewers are obviously looking for something different.

Arkansas's Favorite Morning show with the least amount of viewers.

At 4:22 PM, March 31, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 7 ranch is being raided by bad decisions. Bad equipment decisions, bad staff decisions, just bad, bad, bad. Dale could give two squirts about the numbers for 7. He is riding out the insurance life for his wife and himself. As long as Albritton keeps him "floating" what the eff does he have to worry about? If he did give a crap he would get rid of Dixie and and get someone who actually cared about a quality product. The viewers want 7 to be number one, they just do. Evidenced by the fact that they still tune in even though 7 puts out crap for content. Not in the numbers once seen, but they still tune in. Good luck 7, you will need all the help you can get, especially with your morning (Daybreak & GMA)producers!! They are dulll unimaginative people.

At 7:17 PM, March 31, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe Daybreak coming in at #3 is bad karma. Considering BJ sams, Tom Brannon, and Matt Mosler have all been let go by KATV in the past. Who's the bad judge of talent over there? Geez, these three are cash cows for THV and KARK.

At 9:50 PM, March 31, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was under the impression that KATV was gaining in the morning. The "Arkansas favorite morning program" promotion run by KATV is just flat false. Are they not worried about credibility issues? For crying out loud, KARK actually came in ahead of KATV. The tide has turned.

Is there such a thing as imaginative producers?

At 7:17 AM, April 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, when you see the same guests over and over again on one show and no guests at all with an inexperienced producer who just got hired three months ago and made the show boring cause she doesn't want to do her job correctly and gets rid of staples like traffic and put in packages talking about technical advances, guess you would fall to number three in three months. Time for a new producer?

At 3:37 PM, April 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. The problem with that show is the producing and obviously the promotion!!

At 4:17 PM, April 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why won't anyone admit the on air people on Daybreak aren't as interesting as THV and KARK? It can't all fall on the producer. THV hasn't been #1 forever b/c of the producer, it's the PEOPLE ON AIR!! KARK is not #2 now b/c of the producer, it's the talent. DUH! Let's call a spade a spade here.

Robyn Richardson is the Executive producer of the morning show. She, Tom, And BJ all work very hard with the other producers to make darn sure the product that has their name on it is good. If they see that something is going on they don't think is a good idea, they are proactive about it. If the show is dull and boring at 7, then why hasn't the talent stepped up to plate to do something about it? Don't just blame the producer. I agree, let's call a spade a spade.

At 6:21 PM, April 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

who controls the content of a show? the producer. if the show sucks who should change it? the producer. given the fact that the heads of the news dept at 7 must not pay attention to their product it should be easy for a producer to change their show. yes, you would think it would behoove the talent to worry about something that has their name on it, but the ultimate responsibility rests with the producer. it is THIER show (baby). so a spade is a spade but the ultimate responsibility will always rest on the producer. they know that and so do you.

Sad but true. Daybreak has been thru at least 7 Different Talent and 4 Different Producers and it hasn't helped. The only thing constant is the ND and GM.

I think one reason for the KATV decline is the Christina Munoz effect. She is not an anchor, period. A reporter, yes, but no authority as anchor, esp when co-anchoring with a ex-sports guy.

At 9:02 PM, April 01, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you ask me, the problem with KATV is nothing more than their horrible, horrible looking picture. It's washed-out and their sets have no contrast or color, their anchors look bland, and the Daybreak set has no morning energy whatsoever. No wonder the talent can't get excited about it.

I hear the problem is some end-of-signal filter they use that someone is too cheap to get fixed.

Too bad. KATV used to be the technology leader.

If you think Dale doesn't care about the ratings, you're wrong! His ego is so big he can't stand being #2 let alone #3. Especially when it makes the paper. Right now he's sulking in the corner office firing off very nasty emails to the staff. He walks in the door and won't say hello to anybody. He just goes in his office and hides behind his secretary. There will be changes after the May book.

We all know that positive change sometimes lags behind in the numbers. I think it's great that the Book is finally reflecting the forward progress at KARK. Quality shows.

Progress in ratings doesn't happen overnight. It takes time. KTHV has been steady in their growth. They've given the numbers time to grow. KARK is following the same path. KATV doesn't get it. Dale will make more knee-jerk changes and fall even more.

I think KATV was is too arrogant to think that Daybreak would tank, even though the people are boring, not to mention the content. It's like they don't even try. But if they make changes, there is nobody strong enough to be anchors in the morning, so they would have to start with all new people that nobody knows. That's not going to work. It looks like they have dug themselves into a morning show hole that will take a LONG time to get out of. By the way, congrats to THV and KARK mornings. Hard work pays off.

KATV is missing the boat with all this YouTube and video game business. You think teenagers are up watching a morning show? They're still drunk and passed out from the previous night. KTHV learned a long time ago -- it's the older crowd that gets you the ratings. How about some segments on leak-proof undergarments and denture information? They do a weekly bit with a dentist, but, most morning viewers don't even have teeth! Duh !

At 12:40 PM, April 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV could win back the older audience with a daily segment called "OH MY ACHING _______"

Monday could be "goiter"
Tuesday could be "bursitis"
Wednesday could be "limbago"

The smartest thing Dale could do is keep the anchors on that morning show. Too much inconsistency over the past decade.

At 6:31 PM, April 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, when the new producer was hired for daybreak, which was late november early december, the show was allegedly number one and in what less than two months, and because of her background as such a hard news producer and not an entertainment show producer, getting rid of traffic, changing the format around where they concentrate on a younger audience with ABC's Tech Bytes and packages of that crap and not on making the show more entertaining, the show tanked to number three right at the same time KARK changed their show. Sounds like to me it is the producer's fault and no one else's. New producer and the show falls from the top to the bottom.

In response to this post, why don't they get Anne Pressly to host like she did when Beth Hunt was on maternity leave. The show was lighter and more entertaining. There's your answer.

At 7:35 PM, April 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anne Pressly sucks! Please do not put her on the morning show. If that's all you have, then give it up! By the way, Daybreak was barely #1 in a July book, and they even let Melinda off during that book. It obviously was a fluke, and don't just keep blaming the producer. One good book in 7 years is nothing to write home about.

At 7:39 PM, April 02, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Daybreak was NOT #1 in a month after Nov. or Dec. it was July, and yes, they even let people off during that month. As the other poster said, PLEASE CALL A SPADE A SPADE! The show is not good, regardless of the producer, the talent, Dale, not to mention the dog that disappered.

So who throws who under the bus first at KATV?

At 4:37 PM, April 03, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good question. Melinda, Beth and Jason have all been there a while. They have all worked their ways "up" to this position, if you want to look at it that way. They already dumped Capri and Condo. The show is not failing because of personalities. It's because of content. So the blame does not lie with the on-air talent.

But, expect KARK to keep pouring it on and doing great work. This is their shot to be #1 in the mornings and they will be.

Hey 7:45

You are being way too obvious with your posts about keeping THVs morning crew together.

You and maybe someone else always have to say that. It's getting old and transparent. They are great talent and I'm sure management will do all they can to keep that team together.
Get a life..

At 11:17 PM, April 03, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i'll agree with 7:45. as long as 11's morning team stays together, they will continue to do well. it's all about familiarity and personality, especially in the mornings.

4 is trying, and will only get better with time as they continue to gel.

and 4:37, morning news nothing to do with content. it's all about the people delivering the message. sorry to burst your bubble, producers.

11:17, if what you say is true about familiarity, why let Pearson go?

At 7:17 AM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who says they let Pearson go? He may have wanted too much money. Contracts have to be signed by two parties. Who knows he may have wanted every Tuesday off to play baseball, or he may have wanted the AJ deal of never having to work past 6:30. But I'm sure the decision to let AP go was not made by THV alone.

At 9:47 AM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

3:35- if pearson was indeed let go (take into account what previous poster said), it will come back to bite them. viewers may be familiar with the current team but you can't not have a male presence and appeal to that segment of the viewing population. they may be still riding the train from books past. give it another book or two and see what happens.

At 10:59 AM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why do you have to have a male presence? Years ago it was thought an African-American wouldn't be successful anchoring (some stations still feel that way) there is no written rule that says you must have XYZ to be successful. And with the key selling demo being women, why wouldn't an all female cast be a boost?

At 12:53 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

check around the country and see how many same-sex anchor teams are in place and how well they do. i guarantee, not well. the only exception is a noon/midday newscast, where your audience is predominantly women. you can have whatever ethnicity appeals to your viewing public, i'm just saying it's very rare not to have an opposite sex presence at the desk.

At 2:37 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who says women want to see women anchor the news? Last time I checked most women like men.

He knew it was it was coming.

He's happier.

Guess who fought for traffic to come back? That's right, the producer.

You literally have no idea what you're talking about. I'm guessing you've never produced a show before, or you'd know how things go.

Thanks fellow KATV employee, it looks like we really are one big happy family.

I'm as imaginative as I'm apparently "allowed" to be.

But thanks for your concern.
