Congratulations FOX 16!!!!

Why is that female anchors always think it's cool to fold their arms? It's probably the worst body language an anchorperson could convey.

Folks, it's time to sit up and take notice of Fox 16. They are already the first on scene at most newsworthy events and now they are going to make a dent in the local market news shows at 5p.m. with their expanded coverage format. It's about time someone had some original thoughts in the LR market. Go Fox!!!

2 complete shows, 1 hour of news and 40 minutes of commercials.

Why would I change my viewing habit for 4, 7, or 11 to watch the same crap on Fox?

Take notice? Are you serious? Did somebody show the new Fox ND this blog?

At 11:15 AM, March 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Two complete newscasts, one solid hour"?????

To me that means a repeat of the first for the second newscast....

Anyone else agree?

At 2:31 PM, March 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

they'll have something new in the second half hour like a franchise or two, but it will be basically the same as the first half hour.

At 3:40 PM, March 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think they do a great job with their news and they will give the big 3 a run for thier money.

At 5:36 PM, March 16, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, they certainly do more than the "Big Three" by covering more than just homicides and wrecks (all you have to do is listen to the scanner to do that). They cover human interest stories and have good old down-home reporters. The folks at KLRT work for a living and it shows. "Big Three" better get to humping 'cause 16 is going to be #1 before long.

What's your 5pm lead-in? Tony Danza?

Fox has no chance to compete. Keep drinking the coolaide. Nobody with the name Hussian in his name will be prez, and nobody will change channels to watch a super gay weather guy and bunch of flashy graphics. I don't care if you go 24-hrs.

KLRT No. 1? Ha! KLRT isn't applying the resources to be tops in this market. They only have two weather anchors, two sports guys and two news anchors. Maybe after the sale KLRT will add personnel because seriously, how do you adequately cover the Razorbacks with one sports anchor in the field and a photog?

How would they handle an major weather catastrophe? Not as good as the big three right now. They don't have the manpower. Their Dumas coverage was adequate, but it certainly wasn't better than anyone else's. KARK and KATV really did a great job on that story. They had the best video.

KLRT has a long way to go before they find equal footing with the rest. That being said, they're making good progress.

At 10:49 AM, March 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It takes time to build your staff. They cannot just pump a ton of money into their news department before they know how it will do. That is why they started out small with the 9pm news and are now expanding to the 5 and 5:30pm. If they had invested a ton of money in the news department right at the start they would have gone bankrupt in no time flat. That is what happened to the WB station when they had their news department. That is why KLRT didn't expand very fast. They have brains and know how to be smart with their budget.

At 12:59 PM, March 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's really obvious that most of the people who have posted on this website work at FOX 16.... One thing is clear... we'll see after the May book who is watching FOX and who is watching "the big three" at 5... my prediction...

7 will stay # 1
4 will stay # 2
11 will fall further at #3 and lose viewers to FOX
16 will be #4 and get a 1 or 2 rating.

At 3:52 PM, March 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The big three may have more sports guys but who was first in NYC with Mcfadden, who was the first live at the Cap One Bowl, and who was the first to be live in Spokane for the NCAA Tounney?

You can have all the people you want but when you sit on your butt and the little guys hustle more than you it shows on the air.

The big three do have more personnal but FOX16 covers more ground with less. They also know that news just doesn't happen in Little Rock.

At 7:55 PM, March 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Two things. Mr. Leo needs to go and KARK lead first with all those sports stories.

At 11:54 PM, March 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, and then he needs to take some spelling and punctuation lessons. My money says that he is a broadcast journalist (they don't have to know how to spell correctly) and not a print journalist.

At 6:11 PM, March 18, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me just say it doesn't matter who is first on the scene we all hit on-air at the same time...well most of us. The only reason FOX has been getting there first for the past month is because they have been practicing for a new early show and are now understanding what real deadline pressure feels like. I mean I wish I had enough fingers to count how many times we have all waited on them at press conferences in the past.

At 10:18 PM, March 18, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For those dissin' KLRT, its not 1977 anymore.
KARK is not the old station of Roy Mitchel, Carolyn Long, etc. Its now just a Triple-A franchse of the Nexstar empire. KARK's sports department is outsourced from KNWA, Fayetteville's (and also Nexstar owned/operated) NBC station.

KATV will not give up the ghost of its Old Guard viewers some which might live to see the Analog Shutdown in Feb 2009. And KTHV will continue to underachive and revert to its pre-Gannett "glory".

KLRT's strategy is getting the younger viewers that might be tempted to tune into CNN or the more popular (although *very* flawed and right-wing) FOX News Channel. 16's scheduling of its early newscast will allow those to tune into the local news at 5 or 5:30 and watch the FNC "FOX News Report" with Shepard Smith @ 6pm.

Hate to say it, its a different world than when our parents and grandparents grew up (for better or worse).

I agree with most of those comments. The business is a lot different now. What is still the same will be changing shortly. The old school stations will and are losing their edge. It probably want turn as quick as all of us do but it's heading that way. 7 will be the big loser. 11 is at least thinking outside the box. I don't agree with all their changes but at least they realize they need to experiment for the future. 4 is making a lot of sense. Mixing some of the old days successful ideas with some new ideas that others make fun of like sports from Fay. This is smart not outsourced, oFunny 7 tried the me too thing. Good luck 16. I think you have a long way to go but you are doing the right things. The future of where these stations rank 5 yrs from now will come down to being open to change from the GM's and ownership.

"Let me just say it doesn't matter who is first on the scene we all hit on-air at the same time . . . "

Well, if you get there too late to catch the action, it does not matter when you hit the air, you have missed it. That is why getting there first is most important. Who are you with, 11?

At 10:10 AM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So exactly how many sports anchors does it take to say: "Well, the Razorbacks sucked again today..."?

At 10:40 AM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This thread is so funny because it's so obvious that it's Fox 16 people tooting their own horns in the third person and presuming anyone who calls them on it works for Channel 11. So pathetic.

At 11:11 AM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking as someone who doesn't live in Little Rock (or in the state of Arkansas for that matter), everybody in LR (from what I've seen on Web clips) stinks... be it graphics (7 can't choose / 4 is nauseating / 11 is too blocky / 16 is too generic) or Web content (everyone has clunky Web video or not enough at all) or style issues (4 is too Volvo-driving-soccer-mom, 11 is too folksy, 7 is too death and destruction, and 16 doesn't have a niche yet).

The days of Carolyn Long / Karen Fuller / Steve Barnes / Doug Krile / Joe Quinn were the Little Rock market's prime... it's just a shame to see how far downhill it went.

At 12:22 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Their 5 will be ballyhooed as a success because it got on the air with low ratings and lots of cheap ads. They have lost three managers (good or bad?)but the leadership left is a paper jockey lame duck who thinks he is the CEO of a network. Spohn needs to go for success there, and will at the sale. We did not like him in Memphis and would have paid LR to take him.

At 1:21 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Dear 11:11,

Joe Quinn= the glory days?

You had a credible post until that sentence.

Joe was a great reporter, but one of the worst anchors ever. Wait... there was his replacement...

At 3:10 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought Joe did an excellent job. Regardless he was certainly not treated very fairly. Remember back then when everyone thought Gannett was going to can BJ, too? Bet they're glad they didn't now with such a success in the mornings.

Why is 4 Nauseating? I'm just curious. I will admit, though, I love Fox 16's graphics.

How about not comparing 4 to the Roy Mitchell /Carolyn long days just yet. Let's take a look at the Al Sandubrae "if it bleeds, it leads" days or the Kent Bates/Denise Whitaker days and be thankful that those times are over & it is moving in the correct direction.

"The days of Carolyn Long / Karen Fuller / Steve Barnes / Doug Krile / Joe Quinn were the Little Rock market's prime..."

You don't know what you are talking about. Kark's Les Bolton, Roy Mitchell, Tom Bonner, and Dave Woodman and news directors like Wayman Dunlap and John Reader ruled the air for a number of years while Carolyn Long was still in school. Doug Krile? Are you kidding me?

At 9:34 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least we all know who the bloggers are...
Fox employees fill this sight with tabloid commentary about the other 3 stations and their anchors just as any insecure person would try to drag down others to feel better.
But their newscast is a full on joke and nobody is watching...

At 9:42 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So, did anyone watch FOX 16 at 5pm today??? I watched for about 5 minutes and couldn't anymore... this is what I saw... a bunch of national news, most of which, didn't mean a THING to Arkansans. There wasn't ONE local story before their first break... just a bunch of national news. If this was their debut, they did a horrible job. They are a LOCAL newscast and to get viewers you must deliver LOCAL news. On their first day they should have tried to grab viewers so people would want to watch... that did NOT happen today.

At 9:46 PM, March 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And the "Big 3" opened with the latest homicides and wrecks. Make sure your batteries are fresh for your scanners . . .

(5:43) Why is 4 Nauseating? I'm just curious. I will admit, though, I love Fox 16's graphics.

4's constantly morphing bug, constantly changing ticker sponsors and such are just way too much motion for the screen... 16's are clean, sure, but don't stand out. (I will say I'm surprised CC hasn't rolled out a "generic" graphics pkg for all of its stations.) I think ABC in Chicago has the right idea -- simple animation for the bug and easy-to-read type that still isn't the same as everyone else in the country.

(9:34) Fox employees fill this sight with tabloid commentary about the other 3 stations... But their newscast is a full on joke and nobody is watching...

Their newscast, from what I've seen, isn't great... but it's adequate. The problem is, nobody in LR is better than adequate - when the market was, in the 80s and early 90s, exceptional.

"Why doesn't anyone list their name with their commentary? I am just curious?"

Because most of us work in this market & enjoy the anonymity that blogging affords us. We can speak freely without worrying about being judged based on our stations or positions. Also, the managers read this from time to time & I don't always want them to know what I am saying! :)

At 1:41 PM, March 20, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Why doesn't anyone list their name with their commentary? I am just curious?"

Because a lot of the time, one will not get an accurate representaion of what is going on at a facility if the worker bee has to give his/her name. Not always, just some of the time this it true. I once had a boss that wanted to know what was wrong at the station and what he could do to improve the operation. The manager required that we sign our names. When he received only a few responses (out of more than 100 employees)he revised the survey and did not require the name signing on the second round.

Hey Sean go work the brackets and don't worry about our names....
Go sale something!!!!

Hey Phil, this blog is for complaining and saying negative things about your competition, not tomfoolery (and a very limited amount of intelligent commentary). So get off unless your say how terrible another station is!

You all seem to be missing the obvious thing here--despite FOX16 providing some things the other stations don't (better graphics, much more detailed coverage of national news, a far-superior sports report), they'll never get out of 4th place with the crew they have now!

Donna Terrell is honestly the most vile thing I've ever saw on any TV news program, and I've lived in 6 markets. She's soooooo self-absorbed, it's so obvious the people she works with are embarrassed by some of the insanely dumb things she says on air. NO, it's not because she's black--that has absolutely nothing to do with it. She has this way of turning ANYTHING anyone ad libs on air to be about her and what she thinks. It's actually uncomfortable to watch at times, I feel so bad for the other talent there.

That crew has NO chemistry whatsoever, and they'll never take off until they get a few more likable people on air.

Kevin Kelley is just fine if he were surrounded by better people. The sports guys are quite good--VERY underrated. The gay weather man? Ok, I guess. Terrell is AWFUL. FIRE HER!

(just an anonymous viewer, not one of your colleagues!)

Noone will ever list their names because they act like mean kids. Name calling and despicable attacks. Noone would ever admit publicly that they are really fairly awful humans nor give up their chance to act it out anonymously. They wont list their names attached to the commentary because their cowards.

At 7:30 PM, March 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Like you?

Is that Peter Noone you are speaking of. He will be on FOX tonight at 8 central time. The top-rated show, American Idol, is on KLRT.

And the Fox 16 producers chime in! Your signature elementary spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors give you away every time.

Spelling? Grammar?

Do you really think that "noone" is a word?

Actually, I don't post my name because I don't want the insipid commentary and name-calling (by the vast majority of people here from ALL the stations) following me over to my personal blog.

DCG needs to -- seriously -- go TWoP on this board and start screening comments for grammar and tone.

Who gets canned at Clear channel to cover the FCC Fines?
FROM TVBC:
FCC POSTS MORE KIDVID FINES. The FCC posted these notices of Apparent Liability on March 21: Clear Channel Broadcasting Licenses, Inc. of its Apparent Liability for Forfeiture in the amount of $14,000 to KLRT-TV, Little Rock, AR for violating the Commission's children's television commercial limits and public file rules; Clear Channel Broadcasting Licenses, Inc. of its Apparent Liability for Forfeiture in the amount of $12,000 to KASN-TV, Pine Bluff, AR for violating the Commission's children's television commercial limits and public file rules;

Poster at 3:08 on 3-21, you might not like Donna, but the rest of Little Rock does. She actually has the highest Q score in central Arkansas. Besides, I can think of a lot of people I would never hang around with that are good on camera (Ned).

Oh, for those who are curious (because it keeps coming up), I am a Fox producer. I just don't create a user name because I do like the anonymity every now and then.

If you folks spent half as much time on your newscasts as you spend on Myspace you would be unstoppable.

At 4:24 PM, March 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm afraid you didn't get all the research. There's no way she has the highest Q score. Maybe among 9pm anchors.

At 5:29 PM, March 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

4:24, show me the numbers. I saw them when I first started here, so my info might be outdated, but I'm positive that DT scored higher than any other anchor in the DMA.

By the way, is it really any surprise? Let's face it, none of the anchors in this market are particularly memorable (save Craig O'Neill, but becoming memorable by being goofy shouldn't count). I wasn't terribly surprised that DT scored higher. Munoz and Inman are solid, but nothing stands out about them. The THV anchors are never on set long enough to remember, and Clausen comes off as being a little boring.

It's personality that leads to a good Q score, and Donna has that. I think the only other anchor in Little Rock that can match her personality is Jancey Sheets.

At 1:41 PM, March 23, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

DT could be a big star in a big market, but she needs to worry less about being a star and more about being able to read more smoothly.

I don't know if she needs glasses or she doesn't read her scripts, but it's distracting.

Otherwise, she's the best talent KLRT has and is one of the, if not thee best in the market.

At 2:06 PM, March 23, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I've also wondered if she might need glasses. She can never get through a block without occasional major and frequent minor stumbles through copy.

At 2:27 PM, March 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Donna Who? Q Score - Based on "research" provided by Fox? I can hear it now. "Of these local anchors, who do you like best?

A. Who's Donna
B. Donna Who
C. The weather guy on Fox

Donna who is not a player in this market. Whenever FOX decides to go head to head at 5, 6 and 10, then they can be considerd a REAL news station

At 5:24 PM, March 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I guess that a REAL news station's duties are showing all the killings, wrecks, fires and tragedy that occur in Little Rock and North Little Rock. Keep those newsroom scanners plugged in and monitored guys and gals because news is our biggest moneymaker.

At 11:04 AM, March 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just because people that work in the market doesn't want to admit that FOX16 is a player in the market doesn't mean the viewers have the same feelings...

Just keep over looking FOX16 and we will keep being the little engine that could.

In cause you missed it this weekend an murder suspect went to 4 and 7 to turn himself in and was told to come back at 9am....When he went to FOX16 they got a crew and he turned himself into police in their parking lot.

Have a great day!!!!

It also says "people doesn't". If this person really is a news producer, they should be thanking their lucky stars that literacy doesn't dictate position because, if it did, they would be wearing a hair net.
