KARK Makes News

A blog reader sent in this screen grab from a KARK newscast earlier in the week. Notice the label on the interstate.

Yeah, it must have been created by someone that does not know where the story occured. The location of JJ's is North or East of Glenrose, not where they show it as being South or West of Glenrose. Oh, these out-of-state graphic artist.

Hey Rocket Scientist at 10:20AM

Interstate 40 does not go through Malvern! It's I-30!

Yeah, the glaring error is I-40, but Glen Rose is also located incorrectly. The accident location is correct, but Glen Rose is another exit down.

god forbid! someone makes a mistake when trying to get breaking news on the air. it's not that their graphics people are from out of state, it's that those people are all under the age of 30! they've probably never been past benton on i-30.

Wow.. this must be the first time in history a graphic has been wrong in the Little Rock television market.

Look, people, I made the map. It was breaking news, I was in a hurry, and I goofed. I corrected it by the next time it hit air. And according to my map, that is the correct location of Glen Rose - exit 108, I believe. Bob said the correct interstate on the air, I just got in too much of a hurry making the map. My bad! I'm glad you are watching so closely, though...keeps me on my toes - usually. :)

Oh, and I'm not under 30, either.

Hey graphics person from KARK- as someone from a competing station, I think this blog entry is overblown. Don't sweat it. People make mistakes. Even *gasp* talent.

You go!! I'm not in News and if this is the biggest thing someone can come up with then they need to look in the mirror. I always appreciate someone that is working hard and is trying to get the job done. I would much rather see this then more of the same old boring stories that most of you do. By the way, the rest of you do a great job on your graphics on your boring stories.

Wrong again. There is no Exit 108 on I-30. It happens to be Exit 106. One would think that you people would check the facts before airing them. What is what's wrong with today's broadcast "journalists" is too many gadgets, don't know how to use them. I might suggest using Yahoo maps or Google Earth to help you accomplish your mission.

I saw the other morning on the Today Show, a slate promoting Brian Williams the next day. They spelled it "tommorow."

These kind of mistakes are common, but really not necessary as it takes about 1.2 seconds to correct the interstate number. Breaking news is a nice reason, but pretty ridiculous.

Whoever runs the graphics at 11 is the worst. Not only are the things over the shoulders of the anchor types full of errors on a weekly basis, check out the scrolling graphic at the bottom. Fifth graders could do better.

I also do graphics at another Little Rock station. Don't worry about making mistakes. They happen, especially when you have breaking news like that. Some people just need to get a life.

I'm not in the broadcast industry but if you people would quit trying to scoop each other and just get the news right once in a while, we viewers would appreciate it. The only ones who think that sooner is better than accuracy are news directors & GMs. Try using a spellchecker and LOOKING AT THE MAP that I'm sure is on the wall of your newsroom. You people sure make lots of excuses for so-called professionals. Slow it down and just get it right.

Theviewer doesn't care. Your ego is way out of wack if you think the viewers really care that you got it up 15min before the other stations or that they care you put 108 instead of 106. You talked to viewers as if you were smarter.

I said I BELIEVE it was exit 108. After I typed that, I looked it up, & you're right - it's exit 106. I NEVER SAID they broadcast that. In fact, I'm sure they didn't.

The fact of the matter is, it WAS the correct exit, no matter what I said on this blog. Geez.

Of course I am right, I am retired from a Gannett station. Are you close to being retired?

At 5:59 PM, March 11, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why are there so many childish people on here?

To 5:34PM, yes, you must be retired, because you're wasting time on here. If you think you can do the guy's job better, then why don't you go to the KARK studios, and take over for him? Then, you can come back here, to your hiding place, and tell us how easy it was to do it. Until then, get a life! Go play golf...go fish... go do whatever retired people do.

For what it is worth, KATV had this over Pamela Smith's shoulder on the 10 Saturday night
"Anit-war protestors gather"

I will, while you slave away at a broadcast station that does not care what happens as long as sales are up and that is all of them. And, if you are a broadcast journalist (I doubt that you are)you don't have to know how to spell to keep your job. As far as childish people, the person that doesn't know I-30 from I-40 is pretty childish and does not belong in a professional environment. And as for retired broadcast people, you will probably never make it.

I'm sure there will be an "interanal" memo.

9:33,

LOL... I remember that... I saved the screen cap from KATV's goof that night. It wasn't just the spelling error, it was the story they were reporting, along with the error, that made it funny :)

Can't we all just get along here! It's a blog site, not a fighting site! Sheesh, One little mistake and people go Nutty! I'd hate to see if something REALLY happened...My god! Lay off the media! They have jobs like the rest of us! Why can't we all just get along! Dang!

This will be remedied interanally,

Sincerely,

Production Director (insert station here).

That person already said they made a mistake. Making mistakes makes someone neither childish nor unprofessional. All professionals make mistakes. It's only a typo, sheesh!

And judging from your posts, you are one old, grizzled, mean person. Did Gannett do this to you or were you always like this?

Bigger mistakes have been made.. than confusing I-40 and I-30.

Bringing back Dawn Scott would be one. Shareese Kondo would be another.... Sydney Hart would be yet another. You get the idea.

At 7:18 PM, March 14, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And you would be qualified to judge them because . . .

Maybe there have been bigger mistakes. If noticed, they would certainly receive similar treatment or worse on this blog. It was sloppy work but the individual had the stones to come here and accept responsibility. I don't ever remember any other subject of a post here exhibiting that much character. It's time to lighten up on this guy/gal.

Who gives a crap? I work for ESPN and even we screw up stuff all the time. 99% of people won't notice that stuff when it's on the screen but the ones who do are always the loud vocal ones who like to cast stones and talk shit when they probably screwed up themselves at work earlier that day.

The only difference is we're under a microscope and thousands of people see what we do daily.

Don't sweat it. You're human. It was bound to happen eventually.

Hey... I work for Fox 16 and we are under an intense microscope. Dozens of people see us every week !!!

Don't laugh. KLRT has the best looking and best lighted news set in the market. Also, the best quality HD digital signal OTA. KLRT's off air signal is second to none and their switching from SD back to HD is unmatched. For those of you that receive HD off-the-air in this market.

Don't sweat it. I've lived here most all my life and still don't know all the streets and highways. I do know most all of I-30 but like everyone else who lives here they obviously caught the mistake so knew the correct route to take. Right? Mistakes happen. Just life.

Wasn't it not long ago everyone on here was making fun of the street system in LR and how one road would turn into another, etc? That's par for all of Arkansas. How can we make fun of that then blast someone for one little screwup? Silly.

BTW, what was the breaking news? Must not have been much or affected many as everyone is more concerned with the wrong map being put up rather than the news.

Way to go mistake guy. I like the way you own up rather than most around here who pass the buck then wonder why they never have one in their pocket. Good job!

Sounds like a screwup that WBBJ (We Basically Babble in Jackson) in Jackson would make. Oh wait, about 10 years ago, they had a weekend meterologists that couldn't even read a map.
