Sweeping Stories

Viewers of local news sure can tell when it's sweeps time. All the "investigations", "in depth stories", extra's....whatever the name a channel gives them they all have the same goal, get your eyeball's attention.

So what has been your favorite or the craziest so far? Maybe it's KSLA's behind the scenes of liposuction where its morning weather anchor had his breasts reduced? Maybe it's KATV's special report on blogging,(I saw that one and was surprised to see Arkansas TV News pop-up on screen. Was watching with family and just let out a big ol laugh.) One that really spurred alot of emails to me was the earthquake hype story KATV done Tuesday night.

In the comments section leave what your fav has been so far.

As a complete outsider not in the television business, I thought KTHV's drunk driving segments - particularly Monday night's report that showed DUI's in action - were top of the line.

But to be fair, I didn't see any of the others.

I don't see the other channels, but I agree. THVs Alyson Courtney and her editors/photographers did an outstanding job and put in a lot of work on an excellent series.

Don't see that often these days.

I hope we can keep this thread positive.
What are the other channels doing that is exceptional?

Amanda needs a few more years before she's a decent reporter.

First ksla's weather guy gets his breasts sucked out, that's AWESOME.
Now Todd Warren should get a hair transplant oR color his Fuzz baLL in Front.
patrick Dennis could just not try so hard to be cool, wear a tie, and get his breasts sucked out too.
All of these guys should fight for the last SEARS SUIT!!

I think Amanda does a fine job of reporting. I think in a few more years she should become UA Head Football Coach. Hey, she'd be way better than Houston.

Seven's disaster hype stories prove that mass comm and journalism grads with minors in political science or kinesiology should not be allowed to report on earth science related topics. No new information or safety preparations, just fluff.

Who is Amanda?

I really enjoyed Donna Terrell's package on her daughter's battle with colon cancer. Also liked the THV package on helping the homeless (but I can't remember who the reporter was).

I really enjoyed KAIT's piece on the alcohol issue with Lauren Payne.

Let me say that again... the story lauren payne did on the alcohol issue...pardon me.

Lauren is good.

Melissa Simas is the best -- little rock star in the making!

You're right. Donna T has a great package. A story on man-boob reduction is great. When do we get to see a female reporter get imaplants?

Go Lauren Payne!

I remember when She was on the SpinCycle on UATV.

Lauren's package competes with Donna's any day !

When is Ned Perme going to do a piece on drunk driving?

I would also like to see Craig Cannon focus on the problem of addictive prescription drugs.

Ned's looking into the dangers of tanning beds.

apparently one of Melissa Simas's many boyfriends is posting on this site.

Like most of their newscasts, the story that made it onto the sports message boards from KNWA regarding whether or not Frank Broyles resigned on his own or was forced out. It was "The Big Story" in their newscast. Will the follow-up be whether or not the U of A inflates footballs and basketballs for use in practice and games?

At 12:30 PM, February 23, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is the 7:38 poster saying that Simas gets around? I doubt it. She seems totally classy.

Did anyone notice that both 4 and 11's morning shows were in Russellville this morning? Saw some of both, and 4's looked a lot sharper.

I'll say it again, cause it got deleted the first time...follow up icky purses with smelly ball sacks. Have you seen the dirty bags they use in gym class to carry the dodgeballs, basketballs and footballs. I think this blog is editing the posts to cover up this terrible menace in the public school system. What are you trying to hide?

I heard Lauren Payne was dating Justin Timberlake. He is from Memphis, you know.

Chuck! That was a called sweeps piece, and I called that sweeps piece!

Now run it up the middle!

It's easy to be sharp... when no one shows up but the advertizers! Did you SEE how many people showed up for 11's shot? Damn!

Problems couting the crowd, and problems spelling. Nice.

4 is totally copying what 11 has done in the morning. Why don't they come up with something different. I know imitation is the largest form of flattery, but please. Hey, let's go to Heber in an RV, oh yeah, 11 did the EXACT same thing a couple of years ago. How about Wild Wed. with game and fish, oh yeah, 11 used to that, and called it Wild Wed. It will be interesting to see just how much of their show will start to look like THV's morning show. What's next, a garden segment?

At 3:47 PM, February 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are right, imitation is the biggest form of flattery. Take it as a compliment THV morning crew. If someone is is doing what you have already done, it is a compliment.

At 6:22 PM, February 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are no original ideas. Just the same recycled crap on all three stations.

RE: 4 is totally copying what 11 has done in the morning. Why don't they come up with something different...

Does Channel 11 really think they invited liveshots in the morning? Please! Nothing original there, just recycling the same ideas, ALL (except 16) the stations in Little Rock have been doing for years. I recall KATV had an RV Tour back in the day of Andy & Gina...Then again in 2000, KATV took RV to Heber Springs. OMG! They must have taken that idea and jumped on it before KTHV had a chance to implement.

At 10:31 PM, February 24, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here is an original thought....cancel all newscasts and run more infomercials. It cracks me up that all of you think that you came up with an original idea.

At 8:40 AM, February 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If 4 gets a garden guru from a local nursery that will be just funny. 11 started that when the weather garden was built.

At 1:25 PM, February 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Once again, P. Allen Smith began his garden reports on Channel 7 about ten or eleven years ago. And before you channel elevenites mention "The Weather Garden." Ned had that first in the late 1980's early 90's. It was actually a garden.. not a deck in a parking lot in downtown Little Rock. What's next, have Ed Buckner draw Gusty?

At 2:28 PM, February 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It sounds like you are trying to say KATV invented news. I think the point that is trying to be made here is there is a morning show that all of a sudden is doing what another show is doing, instead of trying to be innovative and do something different. I agree that THV has done some things in the morning that the others didn't at least not in the last 10 or 20 years, it worked, and now 4 is doing a lot of the same thing. I would also agree that imitation is flattery.

At 4:15 PM, February 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

2:28pm - I agree. 1:25pm ever heard of Bob Bray? go check your facts. P.Allen was on 11 before 7.

There's a difference between going live to someone's garden and actually having one you can do weather from everyday. THV is the only station that has the capacity in which to do one right now. The weathergarden (although not vegetable)is a working set that is used DAILY. Ned never used a garden set EVERYDAY rain or shine.

There are no original ideas. You can take and idea and try and improve upon it to fit your audience needs. KARK, if you recall, has a quite a few former THV'ers that were employed with THV just a couple of years ago. So, maybe they felt it was time to do some of the things they did at THV. If you want to get technical who was first blah, blah, blah. Let's start with Bob Bray and the "Weekend Gardener" series. Bob was way before Ned. Bob also worked at THV.

Allen Smith was first to have a Garden Segment locally on tape. KTHV, if I'm not mistaken did run those packages before KATV picked them up more like 8 years ago. P. Allen was first in incorporating the color blue for EVERYDAY attire. He wanted too much for his garden segments, THV said no thanks. THV has the next best in Chris Olsen who may be offered a chance to do his thing on the CBS Early Show soon. Once again, there are no original ideas. They are re-invented to meet the needs of the audience. THV has been able to do the best recently and the others have tried to follow.

I remember watching Amanda Manett on Campus Crossfire on UATV.

She's good.

Are we really debating not only the merits of having a weather garden but who came up with the idea first?

I think we need to reconsider the premise that it is a ratings winner. What are THV's 5:00 ratings? Lower than the litter under the garden cat's paws last I checked. I give KARK points for never having a weather garden!

Why not have one of the female blond reporters do an sweeps report on being a bald woman like Brittney Spears We'll see how dedicated they are then if they go bald...That would be a unique story...

I would guess all the female reporters in Little Rock are bald. Oh, wait, that's not what you're talking about, is it ?

Melissa Simas isn't a star in the making. Or if she is, it's only going to take 30 years for her to become a star. She's so lame. No on-air personality. She is just a prop for Matt to make fun of. Sort of sad, really.
