KTHV to Compete With KATV at 9am Later This Year with News?

Arkansas Business.com is reporting KWBF-TV Channel 42 has picked up Live With Regis & Kelly. AB.com says 42 will beging airing the program at 9am beginning in September. Live currently airs on KTHV at 9am but 11 GM Larry Audas did not come out and say the station is dropping the syndicated program or not BUT says,"Most of all, Today’s THV is about more and better local news, as well as fresh programming,” said Audas. “We have an opportunity to achieve both of these goals in our daytime line-up and will share details as they develop.”

KATV currently airs Good Morning Arkansas at 9am, while KARK airs Today.

Wow.

If there was ever once sentence that summed up how out-of-touch one person in authority can be with the consumers of his product.

Lose Regis and Kathy Lee in favor of local programming?

Wow.

There is no way the engineer of the famous Five O'Clock call-in show on THV can produce better local programming than KATV does at nine o'clock. That is god-awful.

Let me guess. Craig O'Neill is going to do his characters for an hour.

Wow.

I had to read that article again.

A new prediction: Audas and Regis will both be gone from THV by September.

Is anyone at Gannett noticing the melt down here? It's one thing to change your talent line-up where change can be a good thing, but the only thing bigger THV could lose in daytime programming is the Price is Right.

Why not let Fox have Bob Barker and then we can have TWO hours of wonderful local programming?

I picked a bad day to try to kick my bulemia.

how about an hour of Larry fixing his hair? or Mark Raines on Tetris?

Gannett is behind the meltdown, it's called "Let's make more revenue from local programming and be done with expensive syndicated shows!" Besides, Regis is retiring in August. Kelly Ripa (not Kathy Lee) cannot carry that show alone or with another host, most likely her husband, and the show is a big expense. Therefore, it's an opportunity to do something else. Probably have Cheryl Lacking do 9 and 12 - she's cheap and they do bring in some money with what she's doing at noon. However, with the decesions that have been as of late regarding newscasters and other programming, it would be no surprise to anyone that somehow, someway once again, THV will screw this up. In addition, there are a few anchors up for renewal that are contemplating leaving because of faulty decision making. Bob Barker is also retiring and CBS will more than likely use Dave Price as the new host. Why? Nobody knows who he is or cares. Why not let "Price is Right" go away and retire happy with some dignity? And yes, it's possible that Craig could wind up doing his characters for an hour. At this point, anything IS possible.

Maybe "Larry the Garden Cat" will have his own show! Now that would be interesting!

I don't know why THV would want local programming at 9. Good Morning Arkansas has consistantly been the lowest rating program at 9 since it has been on the air. They make money off of it by charging to be featured on it, or adding it in if you buy an ad schedule on KATV. It does NOT pull in big ratings. They don't have enough people at THV to support another show. They already work their on air talent and behind the scenes people to death. The ideal personalities for the show are not going to agree to do it.

I don't blame Mark for playing a little Tetris to get his mind off who may be calling him upstairs at any moment with another screwy idea.

The truth regarding this show is that Mr. Audas let Regis and Kelly slip through his fingers. Gannett higher-ups were absolutely stunned that he let this get away.

Anyone see a correlation between Michael Scott of "The Office" and Mr. Audas?

Larry the cat and Larry the GM are both going to host the new show at 9. It will save them some salary money.

"The Larry's Listen at 9!"

Oh what fun! Problem is the cat would make more sense than the GM! However, since the cat is pulling more viewers to their web site than aything else, maybe it would be a good idea to give L.T.C. his own show. They'd only have to pay him in Meow Mix or canned tuna. I can hear the contract negotiations now....

L. T. GM - "We just don't think this new show is going to bring in the neccessary revenue to pay you a salary. So, how does 50 cans of tuna sound ?

L.T.C. - "Meow"

Let's see, Larry Audas is Michael Scott of "The Office," who would Dwight be?

David Craft?

Ratings doesn't always mean revenue. 10 spots ata 2 rating is better than 4 spots at a 3 rating.

At 2:42 PM, February 18, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

its mornings. You get like 50 bucks a spot. 50 bucks a spot doesn't cover the cost of Regis. However if you control all the inventory then 50 bucks can add up.

Lets say they run 6 breaks each with 3 minutes of commercials. That's 18 minutes or 36 spots. Even if they only only sell 50% thats 18x50 or $900 a day, $4500 a week or $234,000 a year. I'm sure that's a much better return then Regis.

It's the same reason KATV let Regis go to KTHV in the first place. With a small investment in staff you can increase your revenue.

Not to mention the show will be advertiser friendly. That means value added to larger buys on air.

This is a great move by KTHV. Wil they have the same ratings as Regis? Probably not, but they'll have a much happier budget.

You forgot something, genius. What about the extra money they'll have to pay to produce the show? Duh.
They'll have to pay their talent more since B.J. can't do it by himself. My guess is he would retire if they asked him to do it, anyway.
They'll have to pay at least one producer. If they tape the thing, they'll have to pay overtime, and pay Craig's clown costume/goofy glasses/overalls budget. True, it won't be a quarter million dollars as your dillusional formula suggests, but a station in a market this size isn't paying prime rate for it anyway.
You must be KTHV management, maybe even Larry himself since you obviously assume that the people you have can do "just a little bit more." Can't get blood out of turnip.
Plus, if we used your logic, why don't we just produce local from six AM till primetime? Oh yeah, that's called the Cable Access Channel. Stations who dominate know that budget isn't the end-all. Class and quality go a long way.
If you think this is great move by THV, you a) don't know what you're doing b) don't give a nickel about quality c)need some help getting to sleep from 9-10 AM.
Seven made fiscal sense out of this because they HAVE NO RATINGS after seven in the morning until the soaps and then Oprah. They can use this hour as a sweetner for their sales department, or a pressure valve if they oversell. They can also use the Rivermarket location to heighten their brand name. They don't need its revenue; eleven does.
Consider something: KATV gets its revenue out of the morning show, a few soaps, a marginal prime time and then the evening news. They have NOTHING else and they still earn 24-million a year, just like KTHV.
Eleven kills with number one shows until noon or one o'clock, clean-up with Dr. Phil, have their balloon shot out of the air from 4 until seven PM but then have number one primetime and do well with the 10'clock news. Why aren't they KILLING every one else in the market?
I mean, just use logic. How many barbershop quartets and charity spokespeople and craft tips can you air each day during your local programming?

Please tell me that the 90 year old viewers don't have to see any more of that horrible morning show crew on KTHV

Geez, jealousy. It brings out the worst in people. KATV is the big 90+ audience. Look at your ratings moron. Just a fact. Pride and jealousy, some serious problems here.

At 8:44 AM, February 19, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree. If you are truly secure in what you do, you should have no reason to call people from a competing station horrible or whatever. Maybe you should try to improve yourself, and you won't have these bitter jealous feelings toward your competitors.

You people are so shallow. Go read a book or something. If you are worried about people hurtng your feelings, then "shuga" - you are in the WRONG business. Insecurity is a terrible thing to carry around with you.

Yep, its fact that KATV has the higher older demo... nothing wrong with that, only that's not what the advertisers want. Look at demos. Adults and Women 25-54. Has anyone noticed that 7 is now saying they are Arkansas Favorite Morning Show? Well, in fact they are - with audience of 65+.

Insults to others come from insecurity. If you weren't threatened by somebody, you would not cut them down. I am not in the tv business. The industry I am in is far more competitive, but the people are way too professional to insult each other personally on a blog. I am amazed by the jealousy that comes out on this blog. Are you all adults? Do you need to watch mean girls again?

To the above poster:

If you're industry is so damn competitive, you'd better get back to work and stop wasting time reading the ramblings of us lowly tv slobs.

From your lack of knowledge on the proper use of "you're" or "your" it's obvious you're in TV. Now get back to your cut and paste tv newscast.

Tomorrow we can discuss "its" and "it's".

That is all.

I wish KTHV tv the best with their new newcast at 9 pm. BJ Sams is great anchor I think, and Robyn and Tom are great too.

It's 9 AM, chief. I hope you weren't insinuating that Robyn will have anything to do with this. That would be WAY too much work. She's outta here by 7:30 tops.

Nice to have a three hour day, eh? Even Anne Jansen can't top that.

No, not Robyn! She's the hardest working woman in Little Rock TV news!

At 10:57 PM, February 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Inside tip: Management first approached B.J., Robyn, and Tom about this in August of 2006. B.J. and Tom were on board immediately, while Robyn said she wouldn't join without a substantial pay increase. The show *will be* designed to be a sales-based program with a little bit of news/weather, much as channel 7's GMA and Midday are. Bloggers who have reported that it's better to have low ratings with more sales understand parent-company Gannett's philosophy. It's happening across the Gannett Empire, and our station is being coached right along with them. There is also speculation inside that once a male anchor replacement is found for Andy Pearson, it would be a nice venue for Liz Massey, perhaps moving her to earlier dayparts and being more of a substitute at 6pm & 10pm, since she is paid much less than the other lead anchors at the station (thus putting her in shows with other anchors at her salary level *without* having to give Robyn a raise). Expect the show to debut either on the Tuesday after Labor Day or on the Monday thereafter.
