This from a tipster: "Instead of"KWNA Today", this morning KNWA aired the KARK morning show and they told the appropriate weather for NWA. Dollard did the news and weather updates during the Today show. What's up with that?"

Is it just me, or was the "KNWA Today" link also removed from the KNWA website?
Is KNWA's resources stretched so thin now that they no longer will be doing their own morning show?

Idiot! Why don't you use some of your journalism skills and you would know the reason why that happened. Once you find that out you will see that Nexstar was the only group in the state that could have pulled it off.
Not everyone who reads this blog is a journalist. Can you explain the reasoning further for the rest of us?
I'm going to take a guess that the reasoning was something along the lines of "Nexstar is more committed to saving a $, than actually serving the public."
For all of you thinking bad things about KNWA and Nexstar.... this is what happened. The morning anchor (who anchors by herself) had a medical emergency during the show and had to be taken to the emergency room. She will be alright. What the 2nd person who posted is talking about is that since KNWA and KARK have a fiber between the stations, this was a quick fix so KNWA had news content during the morning show. So, for the first person posting "nexstar sunk to a new low" by one station helping another while one employee had a personal emergency.
Thanks for the explaination! Sorry I jumped to that conclusion. More importantly, glad to hear that she is okay.
WTF? At our station, if someone is sick, there's actually another person who fills in not another station.
Who cares if you have another to fill in. The story is how the group that usually gets slammed on here was able to one take care of an emergency and two be able to continue the cast. Glad to hear she is doing good and congrats to Nexstar for showing us that you too can do something right.
So what happened to Ginny?
No, this isn't right. The KARK show isn't NWA, and it isn't Fort Smith news. It isn't from the market, and it's a highly unusual thing for any station which pushes its local ties so hard (marketing to NWA and leaving FS out of it.) The writer who observed that most stations have a fill-in anchor was correct -- hell, most would even have the weather anchor step in before making the mistake of "diluting" the brand or denying regular viewers the comfort zone of what they get. This is an example of how Nexstar is so cut to the bone in terms of staff that they can't even maintain their brand identity, and they also disserve their viewers. Yup -- the company that wants people to get in back of it to preserve "local news" indeed.
Yes it is right! I know I am but what are you. Did you see the show? Don't bother answering because I know you didn't. It was pulled off perfect. It just goes to show that the two stations in the same state can operate as true sister stations. The same way that the stations you are making fun of are kicking your butt on the biggest story going on right now...HOGS! Let me guess that you are now going to say Sports and Razorbacks don't matter. If that is true then why is there ARSN and not some ANN (Ark News Net)that is produce by the biggest news source in the state...KATV is NEWS. Nexstar step up this time and you're just not wanting to admit it. How about cutting corners. Should be count the number of bodies that the stations in LR have cut? The talent that Fort Smith stations KEEP on the air? Wake up! I hope Nexstar buys KFSM and KLRT. More Nexstar!!!!!!!
A lot of these local stations are all talk and no show.
How many stations did live reports from Starkville about the Razorbacks?
It would be fun to see who steps up to the plate to actually follow the Razorbacks when they go to Atlanta.
If it's such a huge story, I would hope each station in the state sends at least someone.

It doesn't matter whether or not there's a fill-in anchor when something is happening on-set. A medical emergency was occurring, and wasn't over in the span of a commercial-break. Switching to KARK was certainly a better choice than having dead air.

I saw where Doug Currin was co-anchoring with Jason Dollard.So I think KNWA Today is in good shape.Their get plenty of sponsors to advertise.I also wanted to add that along with my KFSM question.
one last thing when is KARK's new website coming out again.
Speaking as a market outsider... I think that getting the fiber line up was a good call -- BUT -- not telling viewers what was going on was all shades of wrong. I'm sure KARK knew it was being simulcast in NWA; they should have mentioned it often so that viewers didn't get confused. (It didn't even have to be "the anchor's in the hospital" -- something like "we're filling in for Northwest Arkansas due to some unforeseen circumstances up there.")
On top of that, it should have only been a temporary fix. Either the weather guy should have been doing the news, or they should have called somebody in. If this had gone on for, say, half an hour... maybe an hour... sure. But for the entire 2 hour newscast, I call no way.
Lastly -- it amazes me how much you guys snap at each other -- do you really think people in market 40+ act this way?
I watched yesterday morning and all the LR anchors mentioned several times that they were broadcasting for KNWA that morning. Coming back from nearly every commercial break they would welcome viewers from Fayetteville and the Northwest part of the state. I think it was handled perfectly.

Keep on smokin' that Nexstar dope. If you've spent more than six months in the news business (and most of the folks at Nexstar have not) you'd know that sports, no matter how glorious, simply doesn't create numbers. C'mon...are you really watching the Nexstar version of the season, or are you watching the games and ESPN and listening to radio? Sports always produces the lowest numbers, weather produces the highest and the news falls in between.
You can keep kissing up to your Nexstar folks, they ain't gonna give you a raise, so settle down.
KNWA Today was on the air until 6:15. There's no point in calling anyone in. Wake up people and get a grip. This string of comments is about ridiculous.
KNWA is the model for unpredictable television.
Put the weather guy on and give us some NWA news. After all you are KNWA, the station who covers nothing in Northwest Arkansas worth a crap.

Actually I have worked in a 40's market and its worse... a LOT worse.

Ginny sick? She must have got an early start to the tailgating for the HOG-LSU game. Shooting tequila that early in the morning on an empty stomach would send anybody to the hospital. Get well Ginny! We love you. Go Hogs!

Whoever posted at this time is very unintelligent. Sounds like you know it all, really you don't know much. Good try though, have a good day Oprah.
Why couldn't Dollard finish it up. Channel 5 had Bridget solo it for a while. They now have Goins doing the sports, did have Kent and Lasure fill in. I can't help it that nobody wants to work under Irwin, hence Sullivan and Nicholson heading out. Sully was about to take over there at Channel 5 and run the show but they unilaterally squeezed him out with some lame excuse. Who's gonna fill in tonight at Channel 5 and do sports, could be Tim Malone.
There is no reason to start personally attacking Ginny, especially when her health is the topic. As a personal friend of hers I will say that we are all very thankful that she is doing well, and hope and expect that you would all be respectful of her and her privacy now and always.
Also, I live in Little Rock and heard Mike Francis welcome Northwest Arkansas to the newscast many times that morning.
I think we will all survive with this little hiccup in our local newscast.

Channel 5 sports is a joke. Why don't some of you Channel 5 supporters get on here and explain and your system works. I'm waiting on Ashley Beck and Ashley Ketz to do the sports since everybody else has. Channel 5 shoved Ashley Ketz out in the cold during the Hog-Vols matchup and left Ashley Beck in the studio. If they were going on talent Beck should have been out in the cold standing next to Garret Lewis and only God knows what he was wearing on his head pretending like he was cooking breakfast burritos during the morning show a couple of Saturday mornings ago.
Adria Goins was promoted to the #2 sports job at KFSM. Anyone who knows her know that she has a huge background in sports and went to college on an athletic scholarship.
Yeah, well, if you can't beat KFSM at least you can talk about them. And if they are as bad as you say they are, and you lose to them, what does that say about you?

All programming and switching (except for local news) orignates from Little Rock for KNWA and KFTA ,its called "central casting"

Where's the period mark at that you left out. If you are going to blast other people for their writing at least you can get yours right. What an idiot. You must run around with people over there at Channel 5. I guess Adria Goins took Eric Sullivan's job since they have never replaced him. And no don't tell me it was Dale Nicholoson that replaced Sully because they were there at the same time. Since it took Channel 5 one year to replace Sully, how long will it take to replace Nicholoson? Way to get on top of things over there at Channel 5. By the way if anybody knows what Garrett was wearing on his head please post it on here. Thanks!

Fort Smith's "Shopping Mania" could give KNWA News a run for it's money.
It takes a great amount of intellience to watch quality programming like 'shopping mania.' You must be soooo proud. FYI, all local news leaves something to be desired.

All newscasts in Western Arkanssas are a joke. The worst in the "Rock" is better than any of that over there. KFSM is a joke! If that is the best the market has to offer than that's sad. KNWA has the best Weather guy for sure and the Sports has been taken over by BO. Even though BO is over the top, I still think that the Nexstar group dominates with their statewide coverage of the Razorbacks. How hard can news be over there? Wal-Mart story 1,2,3. KFSM has wash ups and kids. KHBS has anchor with teeth that fall out. KNWA struggles with tech problems. All of this info comes from this blog not my opinion. Is that really fair to say you even have news casts?

Nexstar is responsible for the crap that spews out of KNWA not the people who work there. KHBS and KFSM are the dominant stations and always will be. They can put all 12 people on sports and still get beat by the sleepy/grumpy Mike Irwin. It doesn't make sense, but it's true.
Shopping Mania is high comedy during late night (now that KNWA dropped Seinfeld from the 11:30 p.m. slot for some celebutainment show).
"What we got right here is a Barbie doll right here. It's missing one leg there, but the kids will still love it. Let's start the bidding at $1."
Does it make you will better to compare yourself to KNWA. That is grading on a curve. The point was not even your beloved KFSM holds a candle to any of the LR stations. You have a low degree of intel.
Shoe Carnival has some great shoes at very affordable prices. Why pay top $$ just to say it was purchased at ____ store. Most in tv do not make the top $$ and are happy to find nice quality (presentable) clothes and shoes at a price keeping us from filing bankruptcy.
Ginny, glad to hear you are doing much better. I was watching KARK that morning and kept wondering why they kept welcoming their friends in Northwest Arkansas.

Whether it's my opinion or the opinion of the post's of this blog, what can you argue with the fact of what was said about those stations.
Comparing stations in Market #102 to stations in Market 50-whatever is stupid. The difference in revenue potential is astronomical. There are some good people in Fort Smith/Fayetteville and some bad ones.
The Fort Smith/Fayetteville market compares very well to other markets of the same size (take your pick). How does Little Rock compare to, say, Jacksonville or Louisville? You don't want the answer.
I don't work in the news business, but I do work with the sports department at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. To tell you the truth, I think Northwest Arkansas does a fine job covering sports. By the way, Garrett Lewis is not "a weird cat". We all love him up here. I know for a FACT that Nutt and van Horn both watch him.
It's not about revenue potential it's about profit. Bigger market doen't mean more dollars in the pocket. You can compare profit market to market.
Looks like Doug is still subbing for Ginny. Anyone have any updates on her?

I agree KFSM sports is a JOKE. Irwin is good on the Razorbacks and that's it. He is HORRIBLE on high school sports, especially the Friday night football show.

I agree with the other guy. I don't think Ginny Barksdale is a KNWA employee anymore. When was the last time an anchor had to be away and no one talked about it? I mean, no one says "Ginny is out this week." or "Ginny is on assignment." or anything. When they are completely mute on the subject, you know that the person no longer works there.

Good contacts? I can't remember the last time I saw KFSM get inside information. They've got the same crap all the other stations have. That is, except for that Indian casino.
What I find funny is that KFSM has people defending how they take care of their workers. I would like for a KFSM employee to tell us how excited they are about how the NY Times shares all that revenue with them. The reason they continue to produce numbers is because of the market history not the current. If they are so great why don't they even have a satellite truck. KHBS and even KNWA have one.

Three years ago, KHBS/KHOG was winning the market. Today, KFSM is winning both HH and demos.
That's a market swing in the last three years. Just because you don't agree with the way KFSM is doing things, don't misjudge the fact that you are getting your butt kicked (satellite truck or not).
This kind of KFSM bashing starts about four times a year and then ends suddenly when the next book comes out and they pound both of the other stations.
The board will go mysteriously quiet as soon as the November book comes out (right after a KHBS complaint about diary placement and a KNWA statement that winning isn't everything).
I just asked 10 people if they watch KFSM's news and 1 said yes. That is the science of how we get our ratings. That would make KFSM a 1.0 rating. You laugh but that is how it's done. Neilsen does it the same way. Don't think you should judge how could of a job you are doing by what a book says. I know we have a better newscast then KFSM and we are way ahead of you where there is growth in the market. Go satellite truck!!
First of all, lets go back to math class. Ratings are a perecentage point. So 1 out of 10 is 10% - a 10 rating not a 1 rating. I understand however that numbers such as 1 are more along the lines of what you are used to. So therefore, I excuse you.
So what you are saying is... you are better than KFSM, you just can't get any viewers to prove it for you.

It will be the same after November as it is after every other major book. KFSM will win by a significant margin. KHBS will finish second. KNWA will be a no show. The only change is that there is a Fox now that no one knows about.

Then why is Ginny no longer at KNWA? Did she resign? Did they fire her? Everybody understands she does not work there but nobody knows why. Why is this a big mystery? Give us a reason WHY she is no longer at KNWA. Was it the same reason as Mary Marsh? Sara Lasure is a good friend of mine and she's had other job offers, but she didn't feel right about them. I think it's a wise decision to make sure you're happy about the whole picture before you move up, instead of moving up just to do so. She has gotten to know the community, has good friends there, and is treated well by the station.
So much useful data for everyone!
