THV GM Larry Audas: We're Gonna Use Them All

Arkansas Business.com has a few comments from KTHV General Manager about the overabundance of anchors on air at the station. Audas tells AB.com,"“I guess an answer in its simplest form is that we’re using them all,” said Larry Audas, general manager at KTHV. “We’ve got an opportunity to take advantage of all the talent we’ve got and we’re not going to be confined by some prescribed, unwritten rule that says two anchors must sit behind the desk and that’s it.”"

This is bullshemp.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out the ranks will be thinning and who it will be. Yes, the soon-to-be-shrinking THV audience is going to be losing at least one soldier. Bet the farm on it.

Only in the mind of Audas, aka "Crazy Larry," is it crafty to keep all of this a mystery and risk his heavenly reward by fibbing repeatedly to anyone who is simply asking for a straight answer. You are so sly, big guy.

Employees, sponsors and most importantly, audiences, don't like to be toyed with and lied to, especially when the manipulation is for some bizarre experiment in local TV.

"bullshemp" writer: coming from a former KTHV employee... you hit the nail on the head!

however, we have to acknowledge that "limbo Larry" IS showing his true colors...

and yes... if "I" had a farm...i would advise liz massey to start sending out resume tapes A.S.A.P.! :-)

I bet they're keeping everyone until Dawn comes back from maternity leave. They don't want to let someone go now, knowing Dawn's going to be off for probably at least six weeks. But when she comes back there will probably be one less anchor for the Feb. book. As a manager why would you want to pay all those big salaries, when you could get rid of one and make your books look better?

Larry, Christians shouldn't lie. OH, let me rephrase that. Christians from Bob Jones University DON'T lie, they just believe everyone else is going to hell and they are entitled to pass judgement on all of us sinners.

I hate to say it but IMHO Liz will be shown the door when Dawn returns from maternity leave.... It it so terrible that they are probably keeping her around just so they can fill the gap whie Dawn is off...

When is her contract up so Larry can "wimp out" and just not renew it?

On another note... Why was Dawn so determined to come back to THV before she had her baby? Why start a "new" job when you're 8 months pregnant? Ego???????

At 3:38 PM, November 03, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It wasn't her decision I'm guessing. THV is so desperate they will do and say anything at this point.

Possibly now, as with Robyn, THViewers will get a second countdown til Dawn's return. This time after the baby. Oh how exciting. I'm quivering. Sheeze.

If the soldiers are smart they will all go AWAL, abandon ship, hand in their THV badge and mike and haul butt out of there contract up or not. Why wait for the inevitable?

Who wants to live in fear and wonder when you don't have to?

Ditto. She seems to know this fact as well. Bloated or not, her face is an easy read. Demeanor as well.

She's definitely not the dawn of the past. I'm afraid dawn has faded to dusk.

There have obviously been problems stemming from Larry's incompetence all along but after the complete frontal lobotomy all hope has been lost.

The THV Titanic is 3/4s under at this point. If you've not already, time to grab a life vest and hit the water no matter how cold it is at first. I'd rather take my chances swimming than hit bottom with Crazy Larry....not talking cat either.

Dawn's still a good newsreader. She just the victim of an overhyped return to the camera, during instead of after, her pregnancy. That and a clear lack of direction (unless you count spiralling downward)and leadership from the GM and ND in the studio. Maybe Lobotomy Larry really believes this experiment with 5 anchors will be successful in drawing viewers.
If that's true, we should change the nickname to Delusional Larry.

By the way, if you keep referring to these puff pieces that you are leading with at ten as "the top story of the day", you will lose the only remaining shreds of credibility that you have with viewers as any type of serious professional news operation.

I mean, lets be real. It was one thing when Susan brought in Craig to do sports with his crazy schtick. It was a whole `nother issue when they started letting him read any type of news. That was incredibly dumb and damaged the cred of the THV news operation beyond belief. Now this. You are going to be the laughingstock of the news industry.

I think what happened was this- THV got wind that Dawn was moving back to Little Rock. There was no opening, so they created a position for her with a big salary to go along with it. But, they didn't want to demote anybody because they all work hard, regardless of thier popularity in the market. So, they figured out a way to make it work so that nobody got fired or moved down because Dawn was coming in. If it doesn't work, then one of them will probably not get renewed. It won't be Liz. She is liked personally by management, and THV is all about politics. Rumor is that Andy wants out, so he may only stay until Dawn gets back from matenity leave. Then they will have an all female anchor team, which in my opinion, will not work. Bad call by management to do this? We'll see when the ratings come out. In the meantime, they are neglecting thier morning show which is the best thing have going in the first place. It is highly possible there is about to be some turnover on it if they are ignore it much longer.

What people don't understand is that the morning show doesn't make that much money for the station. Maybe $100-$125 per spot. Everyone talks about their morning show being #1 and how great it is. The truth of the matter is THV makes their money from the 6p, Prime and 10P.
Just because people like the morning crew, it's doesn't necessarily translate over to the evening news. Let's face it, the morning folks would never work in evening news, for many reasons. So, who really cares if they stay or if they go?

Obviously the above post is entirely CLUELES about what the AM show brings to the table revenue wise. The 2-hour show is sold out, has been for a while, 5 and 6pm are not. The AM show brings in more revenue than the 5 and 6pm newscasts, and almost as much as 10pm. But the 10pm newscast is comanding around 700 to 1000 per spot, 5 and 6 (due to the lack of ratings) is not sold out and the spot rate is lower than 6 to 7AM.
From 5 to 6am, the spot rate has been averaging around 200 per spot. The 6am to 7am has been averaging almost 400 per spot. If THV lost any of the the three BJ, Robyn or Tom, then you can bet they will lose points which translates to lost revenue.

I'll give you this... I agree that THV management DOESN'T care about what happens to Robyn or Tom because they already have BJ locked in for a few more years. I know at least two offers have come to one of the above. If they are willing to take a chance on Dawn right now returning them to the glory years of number 2 slot and ignore the AM crew, you can bet it will burn them in the end. The Morning show is the most popular show they have.

To the above post:
Add up the salaries and hourly employees of the number of people it takes to put on the am show. Add up the revenue for that time period. You're losing money.

It is obvious by the ratings that just because people watch the morning show, it doesn't mean they are going to watch the 5, 6 and 10p.

Political had a lot to do with the am show being sold out. When the November book comes out and the am show continues to dive, I can promise you there will be plenty of inventory to go around and certainly not at the $400 rate you suggest.

The morning show has been selling out for many years. Whoever is posting all this negative stuff about the THV morning news obviously has a problem with thier success. It's called jealousy. If you aren't jealous, then there would be no reason to post caddy remarks, right? I work for an ad agency, and I will say this- we get more results advertising on THV's morning news than any other news in the market. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but that's why we pay a bigger spot rate for it than we would their 5p or 6p news. So before you start posting negative nonsense, get your facts straight. BJ, Robyn, and Tom not only have a lot of viewers in this market, but they also have a lot of good friends. Be careful who you backstab them to.

1 rating point in the am news is worth about $1 million a year, Einstien. It is a money maker for the station. You clearly don't know anything about how business works in tv ad sales. I am amazed at people who think they know it all. It just blows my mind! If I don't know much about something, I certainly don't try to post BS on a blog to show off my own ignorance. I know it's anonymous, but I would be embarrassed to look in the mirror if I claim to know everything when I truly know nothing.

At 1:45 PM, November 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Regardless of all the hype about revenue drivers, it would be a bad PR move to let BJ, Robyn, or Tom get away. They have a loyal audience, and thier viewers would be upset if they didn't make much effort to keep them. The word would get around what happened, and viewers wouldn't like it. I agree with the above poster, they do have a lot of friends around here, not just a lot of viewers.

Agree, it's a great am show. However, am news no matter how good it does brings in more rev than 5 and 6p. A rating point in the 5 and 6 is worth more than a rating point in am news.

You would think that would be the case, but it's not. It's a FACT that the THV Morning Show brings in MORE Revenue than the 5 and 6pm news. Sorry, it's true.

No, you're absolutley WRONG - again. The morning show is earning a lot of money, and has been sold out for a few years before "Political."

Post 1:31 - Thank you for setting things straight.

Which station do you believe is doing the best with the election coverage?

I was watching KARK originally as I'm more interested in the local coverage and THV had KaCo.

When KARK got stale I switched to THV. No reason. Just happened to click there next.

Good setup with having Dawn in the chair, Andy doing all the on the spot talking to people and Liz filling in. Didn't really see Anne while I was tuned in. Again...good setup.

Since THV seems to be the topic of interest lately with their recent display of nuttiness I will say tonite they seem to have at least positioned the anchors correctly. Dawn is a good reader, Andy talks easily and well with others and is very real and Liz does a terrific fill in.

Thank you THV for the little bit of "good stuff" I caught tonite. You have been missed. Hopefully this will continue.

Anyone elses thoughts/opinions?
