I feel that KATV had the earliest and best coverage. Their reporters and anchors were more seasoned. Elections are unpredictable even more so for the anchors and reporters that are reporting on the fly as they wait for results and live shots to become available... KATV showed the most poise and experience among all stations. I ranked the stations in this order: 1. KATV 2. KARK 3.KTHV I didn't watch Fox16.
KHOG/KHBS' website promised early coverage and up-to-date numbers on all the races, but, an hour and a half after the polls had closed, and even though they were showing numbers on their broadcast, all of their online races showed 0% across the board. It wasn't until nearly 9:30 before any numbers showed up on their 'Commitment 2006' online coverage. They really dropped the ball on this one.
I believe KARK had the most comprehensive and best coverage regarding the elections. They had more local races than the other stations and seemed to update the numbers much faster than everyone else.
KFSM did a horrific job of covering the election. Darren was very shaky and Bridget was even worse then him. I thought KHOG was alright with Cannon taking control most of the night.
And surprisingly KNWA looked pretty good. Matt seemed to know his stuff and he worked well with Neile. Overall, the three stations had a lot of problems but by far, KFSM was the worst with a serious lack of coverage and stumbling anchors and reporters.
Didn't like KTHVs anchor desk. Dawn Scott has been out of state for four years and looked like she'd rather be home having her tummy rubbed and feeling the baby kick.
Liz was reading prompter and it appeared that anything not on prompter or on her out-of-the-paper-candidate-bio-sheet would stump her. I always love it when anchors and reporters run out of things to say and start telling us where candidates were born, etc. What a hoot. (By the way, ladies, please stop with the "aww" sound affects after stories you find cute or sad. It's real old.)
Bad move on 11's part to go to network at nine while everyone else was local. Also, no one cares about streaming on the web. Why look at the same boring stuff in a 2X4 inch screen that hangs up every 30 seconds, when I can turn on the TV and get my numbers quickly? Is there some large contingent of viewers stranded at an internet cafe in Malvern with no TV? Or maybe Aunt Rose who moved from Mountain Home to Kansas City was glued to her computer. Give us a break.
Everytime I looked at KARK, Clausen was blabbering on while leaving poor Sheets sitting there.
Fox looked like it was having the most fun and I liked their panel of "experts." The reporting team gets on my nerves.
KATV seemed to over-do it, but their numbers and pollsters were right on and that seems to be the name of the game. You have to give them the edge for the sheer volume of experience and clout they have. All the best guests find their way to KATV
Election night in Arkansas is usually a dull affair until after 9:30 except for the politico's and informaton junkies--which I am one of--and last night was no exception. We're the vast minority. The majority is like my wife who just cared about what the women were wearing, and then lost interest after ten minutes and went to watch HBO in the bedroom.
If you tuned in at ten for the first time on any one of the locals, you wouldn't have missed much of anything.
I too, was really surprised by KNWA...they tapped into Nextar with help from reporters with Live reports from Little Rock. Plus, they're reporters, were right in the action, not the studio, with candidate interview.
Either good planning or just good luck on their part?
As I listened to the radio this morning, Pat Lynch was moaning about Channel 7 and begging them to bring back the days of Jim Pitcock... I believe abysmal was the word used... (I don't even know if I spelled abysmal right..)
I did feel for Fox 16 when the audio went out during Asa's concession. They missed most of it. Everybody has been there, but that was a horrible moment for that to happen.
It doesn't explain away the lack of polished performances, however there were serious lags in information flow out of Benton and Washington Counties. I can't personally imagine trying to 'tap dance' for several hours with little or no information to work with.
KATV was the best in my opinion. Liz and Dawn just didn't cut it, and what were they thinking going to Katie Couric @ 9:00 when every other local station was covering local races?
KARK was also pretty good in their covreage. Didn't watch Fox 16.
>>Hey Asa were you using pre-recorded applause and cheering at your watch party?
Only one reporter discussed the pre-recording of applause and he was from a radio station as well reporting on the number of alcoholic drinks being served.
who cares if there was alcohol at the watch party?
As for Northwest Arkansas, KHBS/KHOG beat the pack hands down. Craig Cannon knows his politics. KNWA made a surprising showing. The anchors did well, and their Little Rock resources added a lot to their coverage. And KFSM...I don't know what was wrong with them. Either there were problems behind the scenes, or someone wasn't communicating with the anchors and reporters. They all just seemed clueless.
That's not all they lack. Speaking as an outsider who really doesn't know the inner workings of a newsroom, I just can't imagine things are very happy at THV right now. The newscast looks like a bad game of musical chairs and the morale has to be terrible.
The shows they put on the air last night was without a doubt the worst election coverage in town.
THV was awful. They should go off the air right now. After all, no one ever watches. Particularly that morning show. It is just horrible. The other stations are so much better.
KATV won it hands down, but would someone please tell Anne Pressley that she doesn't have to yell into the microphone when there is no background noise. Plus, she just talks too damn much.
KATV? PLEASE! KARK hands down won last night! They had the more local races, better numbers and more live shots. The political parties were watching KARK for the numbers.
Haven't you seen those promos on KATV that they were THERE on election night bringing you the numbers...because Seven is news..... So they must have had the best coverage...or they think they did.
Is it just me or was 16 worse this election than the last? I have never seen a station get worse as they go along before. What have they been on the air? 4 years? Put down the pipe and get it together!

1. 11 by far had the worst showing. Their showing was made worse by their musical anchor scenario. Enough already.
2. KATV historically has the best coverage. But, the days of Pitcock, Steel, and Barnes are in the past. The talent is comfotable reading crime stats. They lack gravitas when it comes to politics. Those graphics need updating.
3. 4 didn't do too bad. Good graphics, Just way too much Lu Hardin and Bill Vickery. Get these two their own show (slobber and all). Same complaint as 7, the talent is green when it comes to covering Arkansas politics.
4. Fox 16 who cares, right? Donna gets it and so did their panel. I'd let her run with the coverage - solo.
where was KFSM and KNWA's presence in little rock? answer: watching KHOG's 2 live reporters in Little Rock from Northwest Arkansas. From what I heard, KFSM called THV the night before the election and said what are you gonna provide us from Little Rock, and THV said not a damn thing.
I appreciated KATV being on the ball first with the local coverage initially. Good job guys. Girls too.
KTHV did the best in the interviewing department. The same shtuff was reiterated by the interviewees but some people just can't adlib or change up the beat and Pearson can. Hands down he was the best of all in that category.
It certainly isn't KFSM. I'm sure Mike Irwin is a nice guy, but come on! I'm sure he'll be the first to go once the station goes under new ownership. He can't even compete with Sully or any other station with the Friday night football. It's sad. :( Someone needs to tell Irwin his time is up! He should take Daren's old job at the radio station.

I think they all sucked.

kthv by a long shot did the best job.

On 11, where was the backsmack journalist guy? I always watch for him to see if he's wearing his backpack and hiking boots.
It would seem to have been a good time for backpack bosses to showcase their new weekend reader.
What's the point in even watching? Politicians make me want to barf.

Okay, we've heard from the news directors, what do the rest of you thing?
Hey THV...Where was Andy?
Hey Asa...Were you using pre-recorded cheering and applause at your watch party?
Hey KATV...How many of your alum (or candidates with connections to your alum) got blown out?
Hey KARK...Who was your reporter in NW Arkansas?
Hey Fox 16...Who is watching you?
(besides Warwick on Ti-Vo today)
Hey Vic...how many interviews did you do last night?
Hey Republican party...(insert cricket noise here)
Hey Max and Bill...why are do you keep touching each other?
KATV was easily the best... the most coverage and fastest results and best coverage. KARK was a close second
It doesn't explain away the lack of polished performances, however there were serious lags in information flow out of Benton and Washington Counties. I can't personally imagine trying to 'tap dance' for several hours with little or no information to work with.

Ok...so can anyone break down NWA coverage for me. I missed it!

5 was awful, their anchors can't read or adlib. It was embarassing.
KTHV was awful. But I wasn't surprised. They once again released a poll the night before an election which is simply not ethical and irresponsible.
Sometimes your journalistic responsibility should outweigh your ratings grab attempts.
KTHV has little journalistic integrity.
That's not all they lack. Speaking as an outsider who really doesn't know the inner workings of a newsroom, I just can't imagine things are very happy at THV right now.

But don't you know, their website gets ones of thousands of hits a day.
I think they have a pretty cool video section. The web is the way of the FUTURE!! Or at least that is what they say.

Hey! You forgot your sarcasm font!
Most all of the election coverage lagged.
1. 11 by far had the worst showing.

4. Fox 16 who cares, right? Donna gets it and so did their panel. I'd let her run with the coverage - solo.
Ok, my two cents. Thank you.
People who use the word "gravitas" on internet message boards are hilarious. And dumb.
GRAVITAS!!!
Who cares about the election? It's football season. Holla
i thought KFSM was perfect !!!!!certainly alot better than wathcing freeze face and his cronnies on 40/29...
where was KFSM and KNWA's presence in little rock? answer: watching KHOG's 2 live reporters in Little Rock from Northwest Arkansas. From what I heard, KFSM called THV the night before the election and said what are you gonna provide us from Little Rock, and THV said not a damn thing.
KTHV keeps forgetting they get Razorback stuff from KFSM, but then they like to gripe about them. Wonder if they'll get cut off again.
A little late on getting around to this one.
I appreciated KATV being on the ball first with the local coverage initially. Good job guys. Girls too.

Keep it up and THV will buy KFSM and central cast FSM out of LR.
ok, out of all the lame-brained things I have read on this blog, that comment takes the cake...
Which station covers sports the best in Arkansas?
It certainly isn't KFSM. I'm sure Mike Irwin is a nice guy, but come on! I'm sure he'll be the first to go once the station goes under new ownership. He can't even compete with Sully or any other station with the Friday night football. It's sad. :( Someone needs to tell Irwin his time is up! He should take Daren's old job at the radio station.
Odd how KFSM beats all the other stations with Irwin, especially on Friday night.
