Sargent Promoted To Anchor KFTA Fox 24 News at 9

Source: KNWA Press Release KNWA-TV / KFTA-TV today announced the promotion of Dana Sargent from Anchor of KNWA Today to Anchor of KFTA's Fox 24 News at 9:00 pm. The announcement was made by Blake Russell, Vice President and General Manager.

"Dana has been such a driving force behind the continued success of our morning newscast," said Mr. Russell. "So it seemed like an obvious choice to have her get our new Fox newscast off the ground."

"While I've worked very hard to build KNWA Today and have built many special friendships with the people who work on that newscast, I'm looking forward to this next challenge." said Ms. Sargent. "Plus, it will feel great to finally be able to sleep in again and not have to get up at 2am."
Ms. Sargent is a graduate of Bentonville High School. She also attended the University of Arkansas. She's been with the television stations for three years.

Nexstar Broadcasting, which owns both KNWA-TV & KFTA-TV, filed with the Federal Communications Commission in April to sell KFTA-TV, Channel 24, in Fort Smith to Mission
Broadcasting. Mission plans to enter a joint sales and shared services agreement with KNWATV. KFTA-TV will become a Fox affiliate in late August, providing the area with its first local primetime newscast at 9:00 pm.

There go the ratings for KNWA Today.

I don't get it. Is KFTA going to be Fort Smith/Oklahoma stuff?

Or will this be compared to WB/UPN news in larger markets? Someone fill me in here.

they should put her with Matt Turner on the NBC desk and get Neile out of there. that would be a pretty pair.

Maybe it'll be a smashing success like "5 on Fox" was a few years back.

"continued success" ?

Are flatlinning ratings "continued success"?

And does this there will no longer be an NBC station in the Fort Smith/River Valley market (not that Nexstar gives a flip about the River Valley?) Also, will their audio be in sync?

Why do we need a 9 o'clock newscast to begin with? What's wrong w/ 3 newscasts at 10, even if some are better than others? What purpose does a newscast an hour before serve?

KNWA keeps flushing themselves down the toilet . . . . .

What in the world are you talking about? FOX News at Nine is very popular across the nation. This will be another revunue stream for KNWA and NWA will a choice to get their news an hour earlier than usual. Its a win / win.

Will they be based in NWA? Also, will they have a full newsroom of reporters?

"Maybe it'll be a smashing success like "5 on Fox" was a few years back. "

KFSM did a 9pm newscast on Fox a few years back. There was no interest. KNWA is pulling a 1 rating in several newscasts, I think I'd work on my core product before trying to add another one.

Most large markets have FOX/UPN/WB news an hour before the other networks.

Heck, some FOX stations accross the nation even have a second nightly show to compete with other stations.

Get with the program.

Although it's proven successful in many other markets, I don't think it'll work here. It's tough to encourage an Arkansan to change their viewing habits...especially is KNWA is in the mix.

I don't think that it is a matter of whether or not a Fox station wants news but instead I think that all new affiliate agreements with Fox state that the station must carry news. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Looking at the job postings on the KNWA website, it sounds like they are hiring additional talent for reporters and a sports anchor for the FOX show. There is not one for a meteorologist. Perhaps Dan Skoff will be handling both the FOX and NBC weather?
Another question remains if a news department will be re-opened at the old KPOM building in Fort Smith, or this will still all be done in NWA?

Who will begin to carry NBC in Fort Smith? Will they get it from Tulsa or Little Rock on cable/satellite??

Nexstar is screwing up everything in the Fort Smith/NWA market! It's gonna be tough for the next owner to straighten it all out! 24/51 were licensed to simulcast....just like 40/29! I wish the FCC would step in and protect the integrity of this combined FSM/FAY market! KPOM/KFAA wasn't all that great...but it is much better than the current fiasco!

I can't believe this Nexstar bunch. Their cavalier attitude about Fort Smith and the River Valley area will come back to bite them. Nexstar-One of the worst T.V. station owners I've run across.

"This will be another revunue stream for KNWA and NWA will a choice to get their news an hour earlier than usual. Its a win / win."

Revenue stream? That's right - KNWA needs all the help it can get. As for choices, you're right - my bad. Viewers will now have a choice: An even MORE pathetic and poorly produced newscast on the Fox station to precede the ALREADY pathetic newscast that's on at 10 o'clock on KNWA - BRILLIANT! That will be SOOOOOOOOOOO successful . . . . . .

KNWA's current morning show is nothing more than an average college station broadcast AT BEST. Nothing like bringing that college station quality to a 9 o'clock newscast that no one will be watching.

MEMO TO NEXSTAR: No one is interested in a 9 o'clock newscast, not even in Little Rock. Neal Ardman's Mickey Mouse operation w/ Doug Krile tried that years ago - it failed miserably and flushed the otherwise decent career of Doug Krile down the toilet. I would love to see what research indicates that people in NWA would watch a 9 o'clock newscast. Spare me the demographic data from markets like Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and NY - those markets are 20 TIMES the size of NWA and would be like comparing apples to oranges.

I might watch it tuesday nights after House or at least catch the first headline. but beyond that i don't know.

9 p.m. newscasts actually do pretty well in markets of any size IF they are produced well. The last time I saw ratings, Little Rock's FOX was doing a nice number for a primetime newscast.

The big question, of course, is whether KNWA is going to pump the money in it would take to produce a decent newscast.

I don't expect much. And if Equity wins their fight against Nexstar at the FCC, I don't expect anything.

"KNWA's current morning show is nothing more than an average college station broadcast AT BEST."

No kidding, don't they still have that gay intern producing it? I wonder if they're going to move him to FOX also, or find someone who at least knows whwat they're doing?

"The big question, of course, is whether KNWA is going to pump the money in it would take to produce a decent newscast."

KNWA will invest the money but the reality is NO ONE IN THE MARKET (i.e. viewers) IS INTERESTED IN A 4TH NEWSCAST PRECEDING THE OTHER 3 AT 9 O'CLOCK!!!!! There's not a shred of CREDIBLE market research out there that suggests that it would fly in the area. The only research anyone cites is data from irrelavent markets that are much larger than NWA/River Valley. KFSM has tried it before - it failed miserably. KKYK tried it before in Central Arkansas - it failed miserably. I don't give a rip what Fox's numbers say - the majority of viewers are watching THV, KARK, or KATV and they're watching at 10 o'clock.

If Equity wins then maybe Kfta can pick up the CW and still do a 9 News... i hear Equity doesn't want CW..

I do hear, however, that Equity wants a 9 o'clock news.

If Equity keeps FOX, I will induce a couch burning riot at their studios.

They have to be the most poorly run TV operation on the planet.

We viewers deserve better. Nextar may suck, but they suck less than Equity.

True, as long as you don't mind out of sync audio for weeks on end.

For the Fox Newscast we should bring back the wood paneled set that Marty Houston used for "The Noon Huddle"...

Oh yeah... that was a room in the Garrison Building. I guess we can't use that!

What about that karate guy that's on KNWA in the mornings--does anyone know if Dana and him ever "hooked-up"? They seem very friendly with each other. Wonder if he will follow her to KFTA?

There was a poll taken about the President Election / to American Idol. I think we need to think about this a little bit. It may still be higher for the American Idol but look how many kids or our young people that are under the age of 18 that can not vote for the Presidental Election. Most of the people have cell phones that can for there next star.
