Yet More Movin and Shakin in NWA

This from a tipster: "They come in threes...Don Elkins will not be renewing his contract with KNWA either." Elkins is the managing editor and co-anchor of KNWA Live at 5, 6 and 10 p.m..

In my opinion, Don was the best anchor in the market. With both Don and Rick leaving soon, it's a shame that Nexstar doesn't want to make much of an effort to want to keep its talent. Until this problem is fixed , Nexstar will always be the 3rd place station in most or all its markets.

I am glad to see Don go. He is a punk who is full of himself. I am wondering, though, is he leaving NWA or just the TV station. Remember, he is the anchor of the morning news on KFAY-AM 1030.

What's next? Bob and Jancey anchoring the news for KNWA and then tossing to the Razorback Nation? Sounds like a plan. Nobody can compete with the long-legged Jancey!!!!

There goes the best anchor in the market. Good luck, Don!

Doesn't Channel 5 have a main anchor opening? Hmmmmm....

Don has his crowd for sure...even though 24/51 has been hopelessly in 3rd place...I know people who will tell ya Don Elkins is their one and only newsman...whether it be TV or radio...and I think him going over to KFSM would be a good move if it happens. It would really put the pressure on 40/29!! Don elkins has such a strong identity in NWA...where KFSM has always struggled to overcome 29's advantage. I think KFSM should make a strong play for him. The only question there is....with Bridget Shultz already moved to Fayetteville....it's hard to imagine KFSM not having one of their main anchors in Fort Smith!! Would Don move or Bridget move back?? Or, they could hire a 3rd main anchor for Fort Smtih and have Don and Bridget split the 3 evening newscasts? Who knows?? I just think that Don Elkins being in play may be KFSM's big chance to make a play to FINALLY overtake 29 in NWA. What does everyone else think??

At 8:04 AM, April 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And, they will eventually dominate NWA like they do the River Valley. 40/29 is living on borrowed time. They were first in NWA, and that's the only reason they are still strong there. It is inevitable they will eventually lose NWA and Cannon's gigantic ego won't have much to stand on! KFSM has too many resources! They will eventually find a way to topple 29 in NWA!

At 8:11 AM, April 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If KFSM could somehow put a repeater for VHF 5 in NWA, that would be a dagger for 29 by itself! 29's signal strength in NWA is a big part of their advantage in my opinion. KFSM's Ch. 62/67 doesn't reach everyone, and not everyone knows about them. Those frequencies were originally put there to feed NWA cable systems that could already pick up Channel 5, but they wanted to run separate commercials. I think KFSM should either extend the range of 62/67 and advertise that they are there.....or somehow set it up so that Joe viewer with his TV top rabbit-ears can pick up VHF 5. The latter ideally.

I think the networks and Neilson should give NWA back to Tulsa anyway! I haven't seen a quality news organization around here in the entire 25 years or so since local stations popped up here! I would MUCH rather watch The News on 6 or NewsChannel 8 any day. They do cover the Razorbacks; and provide outstanding weather coverage...MUCH better than "our own stations" do!

It's just Northwest Arkansas so no one really cares. Most of the hillbillies up there won't notice anyway because they either don't have electricity to power a tv, or they're too drunk on their homemade moonshine.

At 9:29 AM, April 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Background for those who are not familiar with the NWA television market....While KFSM has been in Fort Smith since the 50s, there were no major broadcast stations located in NWA till Channel 29 came along in the late 70s/early 80s. Before that time, Tulsa stations were their local television. I believe they were also with Pittsburg/Joplin for a while. That Tulsa comment must come from an old-timer.:)

At 10:50 AM, April 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, all those Walmart venders and Walton-made millionaires sure do like their moonshine.

They must use it to power their BMW's, since NWA's BMW dealership ranks #3 in the nation in sales. They probably use it to power the jets at XNA too, since our airport has more flights than Little Rock.

I also love the way the WSJ devotes entire pages of coverage to all those hillbillies in Bentonville. You know, the ones who shop at our Versace store?

On the other hand, you guys did have a "mobile governer's mansion!"

Don is by far the best anchor, not only in NWA, but in the state of Arkansas.

I've always wondered why he is still here. He could be in a much bigger market.

Not only is Don great on the air, he is brilliant.

Yeah, NWA is right up there with Beverly Hills.

The government will bust up Wal-Mart in the next 20 years... then it'll be back to pickin' teeth with hay seeds and makin' out with your sisters in the back of horse and buggies.

Don't be ashamed NWA hillbillies, embrace your coon-skin cap heritage!

wow...lots of changes in nwa!!!
i guess miss neile joines will have to really prove how great she "thinks" she is now. losing don and rick will kill knwa...neile might think shes the reasons for the ratings, but dons been there forever, rick is a greatfamily guy and people at the station are sick of neile's look at me attitude...ie "team neile"
if you ask her it's hard to beliece that station ever managed before her...management there kisses her a** and it's sickening

Can anyone confirm that Elkins is making his way to KFSM?

I don't think the viewers even noticed that Bridgette is in Fayetteville.

At 8:23 PM, April 28, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KFSM has hired a new anchor, and it's not Elkins.

With all due respect to Don, why would the station with the highest ratings recruit an anchor from the station with the lowest ratings? It just doesn't make good business sense.

Don is great at what he does and I'm sure he'll easily find another job (probably in a much larger market)or as a politician.

Neile IS horrible. But don't tell her that.

At 12:26 AM, April 30, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If memory serves, Don wanted to get into politics. Are we sure Don was not the one who decided if he would come back or not. As far as Why would the number 3 anchor go to number 1, was not he the only existing anchoe from the original 24/51? They were 3rd way back when and did not grow until the others came along. Rick was later,Bo was too and I think Neile was just in the AM. No they are not #1 in the South but up North yjey have come a long way.

At 2:48 AM, April 30, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neile has been on the station forever, though. She and Mike Burgess used to cover the weather back in the day. I think she was weekends and Mike was weekday evenings. Crazy to me that she worked her way up to co anchor. She didn't deserve it. She could barely get through a weather forecast much less a newscast with real words bigger than high and low and five day forecast (which she always stumbled through). since half the evening team is leaving they need to just throw her overboard too

wow - amazing that given all that has happened in this market that Craig Canon is still employed. He is terrible on air, can't ad-lib, and has done far worse things than Malone who recently got canned. I guess it helps to have a good lawyer.

Let's also be honest, local news isn't what it used to be on many levels. I would bet the percentage of people watching the local news is getting lower every year.

Just a correction... KFSM has not hired a new anchor.

Neile is a hell of a lot better than the OBU moron who preceded her. Sad to see Don leave the station. Katzfey is such a nerd, he needed to be shown the exit door. Compared to stumbling, fumbling fool Craig Cannon(proud ORU grad and purported "swinger"---yuckaroo!), Don Elkins practically walks on water in this market.

I'm sorry, anonymous, I suppose your idea of a "professional" news anchor is Craig "Bogus" Cannon. You're not daft, anonymous, you're a fool.

I would agree w/ whomever said Neile should go, too. Her nauseating plugs, spots, and poorly produced shows that were plugging the Komen Race for the Cure *4 months early* were simply horrible. By the time the race FINALLY came around, I was tired of hearing about it. And most of those weren't even about the race - it was all about HER. She'll be in trouble when Don leaves - couldn't happen to a nicer person . . . .

At 1:40 PM, May 02, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ar1836 - you've made quite a leap of logic in your last post, but that's okay - you probably work in television. My idea of a professional news anchor would be Tracey Rowlett at WFAA. Not Craig Cannon. And there is no one who walks on water in NWA.

YOU TOO can take a trip to Hawaii with God's gift to local television news, Neile Jones.

What is wrong with this woman's ego?

At 8:16 AM, May 03, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"What is wrong with this woman's ego?"

She thinks she's actually a good anchor when she's not. She doesn't even do any general assignment reporting anymore either. She's probably already planning NEXT YEAR'S "Team Neile" coverage, which will start in December of this year for next year's race rather than January, like she did this year. She's decided to bump it up a month earlier each year so that we'll be absolutely sick of it by the time it rolls around in April every year. Other than the schmuck running the news department now, I'm not aware of any other level-headed news director that would allow an anchor to do that much over-the-top and unecessary extra coverage of an event.

At 9:54 PM, May 03, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

sounds like someone is pretty jealous of Neile..she has worked in this market awhile and earned her position..for team neile..who else do you see spending their free time not getting paid trying to make a difference in something they believe in..unless you have been behind the anchor desk and hit the streets reporting for years your opinion doesn't count!!!

At 11:29 PM, May 03, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed.."Team Neile" was overkill.

But I've met Neile before, she very genuine and has a good heart. Like many of the Salser bashers out there...most of you just haven't met these people. It acually makes me sad.

At 10:33 AM, May 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Neile is a good person, but Team Neile was hyped too much. It became about KNWA's effort, not about the Komen effort. But kudos regardless. I would caution the poster that there are thousands of people who volunteer to make a difference in their communities everyday. You don't have to be a TV anchor to do volunteer work in the community, so whether you sit behind an anchor desk is moot. Most of the volunteers do not receive TV time or any recognition for their efforts. What I really want to know is who made the decision to put the GM's face in the TV promo? The promo should feature the talent and faces people can identify from the news team and/or in this case highlight those significant volunteers from the organization who contributed to the event.

Jealous of Neile?!?!! Now that's hilarious. Why would I be jealous of Neile? That's right - my bad. I've always wanted to be an underpaid, ditzy, air-headed brunette who thinks I'm a good anchor. Off camera, she's a supernice person. I used to work with her, so whomever said I didn't know her can kiss it. That being said, don't confuse an anchor's on-camera persona w/ what you know of them off-camera. Many times, they are 2 different people. Neile is no different. Also, if you think she did the overkill that was "Team Neile" entirely for free, you're pretty naive. Finally, as far as "hitting the streets reporting for years" goes, that doesn't apply to Neile either since she did very little of it while I was an employee of then JDG Television, Inc., and she does even less of it, if any, now. All she's done for the last 2 years is beat us over the head w/ her stupid "Team Neile" reports. Hardly what I would call award-winning television. She's been hiding behind the anchor desk since 24/51 relaunched the news department doing only the morning show, which was in the tank ratings-wise w/ her and Darlee Chaloupek in the chair, along with the occassional insignificant/unimportant VOSOT or package along with those stupid "Always Fit" reports that Sargeant is doing now. Other than that, she has done absolutely NOTHING in the area of significant reporting for that station. Nice person off-camera, no doubt about that, but her anchoring skills are below-average, and other than what's already been said, there's nothing really to say about her reporting since she really doesn't ever do any, and hasn't for years.

I was the one who posted the long message, and I would like to make clear that my name is *NOT* Gary Darnell, if that's who you're referring to. I will not reveal my name, but I will say that I used to work for Gary and with Neile. Gary had nothing to do with my last post, and has nothing to do with this one, so please forget his name. He is not involved. In case you didn't notice, 99% of the people who post here post anonymously for various reasons, so please spare me the holier-than-thou, be-a-man-and-post-your-name crap. I don't see your name at the end of your post(s), and we all have our reasons for not posting our names - mainly job security. The opinions I have expressed are mine and mine alone and have no affiliation whatsoever with Gary Darnell. If you want to know what Gary thinks of Neile you may ask him yourself.

At 9:56 PM, May 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who cares whether or not the guy posted his name when he did some Neile bashing? I used to work at the station too and couldn't agree with the guy more. Neile never did squat when I was there, and she obviously doesn't do squat now.

At 4:05 PM, May 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This could get interesting.

I worked with Neile at the beginning when she was green as grass. Nobody comes out of the womb knowing how to anchor or do anything else. She had potential and was willing to learn and work hard and she was given a shot at the anchor desk. I always found her pleasant to work with and didn't see any ego issues.

I also worked with Gary Darnell. I cannot imagine him posting a negative message like the one blasting Neile. The biggest mistake Nexstar made was letting him go. If you put him in charge of a news department, supported him and got the hell out of the way, he would have you number one within five years.

Don is probably the only one left in the building that was there when I was. I don't think as highly of him as I do Neile and Gary, but he was the best on-air anchor in the market when I left.

If anyone cares enough to ask, I'll reveal my name...or perhaps it would be more fun to guess.
