Next Stop FCC for Sinclair/Allbritton Deal

Sinclair is this/close to finalizing the deal to purchase Allbritton's TV stations.  It has nearly been a year since the pending deal was announced.  An article in the Wall Street Journal states Sinclair has agreed to settle a lawsuit from the Justice Department requiring it to divest one of the seven stations it has agreed to purchase.  The deal paves the way for approval from the FCC.  On July 29, 2013 Sinclair announced its intent to purchase:

  • WJLA: Washington, DC
  • WBMA/WCFT/WJSU: Birmingham, Ala.
  • WHTM: Harrisburg, Pa.
  • KATV: Little Rock, Ark.
  • KTUL: Tulsa, Okla.
  • WSET: Roanoke, Va.
  • WCIV: Charleston, S.C.

I have to say that I'm going to enjoy watching this whole thing play out from afar.

I do hope karma is the bitch everybody says it is.

Yep, everyone at KATV who pointed and laughed at KARK without taking into consideration the conditions they are forced to work in will have a karma slap coming to them. Sinclair is just as bad, if not a worse owner than Nexstar.

I'm not complaining about Nexstar and I'm not seeing many on here complaining. Since management changes a few years back, it's been a good place to work. Seems like more complaining from the other stations.

@5:47- you must be joking. everyone i know at 4 is miserable. it's a sweat shop these days. just because their people aren't complaining on this site doesn't mean anything about their happiness. nice try, managers at 4.

Why not, every other station complains on this sight.

It won't be that different for the producers, photogs, and editors KATV already works to the bone, but there are people who have cake schedules that are going to have to change or leave.

Master control, sales service/traffic, national sales manager, local sales manager, promotions/production cut down to one person, one anchor cut, one weather person cut, engineering management, sales manager replaced with their own person, graphics person cut, directors do your own graphic early, and 3 more people cut from news staff.

I agree with both posts above.

I say you push for Barry to stay. No one cares who Ned is anymore. He's just a lazy walking large paycheck.

OMG noooo! How could Ned afford his tanning bed and tank cars of hair spray??? I'm only kidding, Ned. Best wishes when you arrive in the melanoma ward. We'll all be laughing - er, PULLING for you.

Hey 8:52, That's funny! reporters, photographers, and editors worked to the bone! THV eliminated most of their editors and photographers years ago! Hey KATV reporters...get ready to shoot and edit your own stories!

What is wrong with asking journalists to do the work involved with their journalism? You SHOULD shoot and edit your stories, otherwise give the credit to the photographer who did all the work.

Because they don't want to be journalists, they just want to be on television.

Research shows that Ned is still Arkansas' favorite weather guy by far. They would be crazy to let Ned go. The other stations would love to have him.

It's not about who is the favorite. It's about the bottom line and whether it can be maintained or increased without his presence. "Research" shows people forget and adapt to those types of changes very quickly. The other stations in town might love to have him - but not for the money he demands from KATV.

No other station in the market would pick Ned up unless he takes a pay cut to the 90's and changes his attitude.

Big time attitude adjustment needed there. I doubt it will happen though.

It will come down to money and nothing else for Sinclair. They have been doing this long enough to know any talent is easily replaceable, and viewers have grown used to changing faces on the local news. And the worst thing going for Ned is he is probably the least active guy in town as far as social media is concerned, and younger viewers can get the 7-day on their phones easier than waiting for Ned at 10. KATV may have had a "dance with who brung you" feeling about it, but Ned didn't bring Sinclair anywhere. For those reasons, I think he's on his way out, but probably not right away.
