GOOD MORNING, ARKANSAS!

KATV staffers: What to look forward to from your new corporate--and publicly-traded--overlords!

1) 15-20% staff reductions across the board by Jan 1st IN ALL DEPARTMENTS (and no severance pay, no matter how long you have worked there--Wall Street & Sinclair do not like to waste money on people)
2) Goodbye GM (station will most likely be put under a regional GM that currently exists at another Sinclair station--St. Louis perhaps?) GSM (Sinclair will replace with one of their own) & ND (ND--you may be able to stay if you can manage to tow the company line--Sinclair LOVES to manage from afar. See: http://www.democraticunderground.com/1014294117)
3) No more than 1 person performing the same task/position (Sinclair is not big on extra staff, ESPECIALLY more than one person with the same title--this includes "Main Anchor." Hell, they prefer one person with 2 titles/2x the responsibilities/1x the pay)
4) No more free coffee. Seriously.
5) Healthcare fees will be going up (and you thought you were paying too much now)
6) 2 LESS holidays off a year (put in your request NOW to have the day after Thanksgiving off or else you're working it!)

Bottom line, KATV staffers: You would have been better off with an equity group buying you rather than Sinclair. A Sinclair GM stated once that CEO David Smith said to him that people are always replaceable, especially with younger hires right out of college, enamored with TV and willing to do the work for pennies on the dollar. Don't believe me? Then see: http://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Sinclair-Broadcast-Group-Reviews-E4585.htm

IF DAVID SMITH INVITES YOU AND OTHER STAFFERS TO THE PARKING LOT, YOU MIGHT AS WELL BRING YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS WITH YOU: See "II. B. Sinclair reduces news staffs and local programming" at http://www.ibltv.org/AboutSinclair2.htm#StaffVolatility

I'm sorry KATV friends. Don't believe a word of what they tell you. This isn't a good thing no matter how they spin it for you now. Managers are being told to keep a positive attitude through this if they want any chance at a golden parachute for themselves.

Take it from someone who worked for a Sinclair station. The change-over probably will be bad for people at the top. However, after the initial slashes things will be OK for the people who stay. Sinclair is actually not as bad as they were ten years ago (when they tried and failed to push regionalization), but they are still pretty cheap. This is certainly bad for KATV going from Allbritton but the bottom line is no matter who bought them it was going to be bad. All of the ownership groups left standing are cheap penny pinchers...it's just the way it is in TV now. I will say that Sinclair is NOT EVEN CLOSE to as bad as Nexstar. I worked for them too and I finally had the sense to get out.

How will Alyson and Chris Kane be impacted?

At 7:27 PM, July 30, 2013, Anonymous Craig said...

It's an opportunity for 11 though since there is no one else that hasn't made huge cuts, and they could try to make the investment there and go to #1 (and Gannett does have several dominant stations, such as WBIR, WCSH and WMAZ). That doesn't mean they will take advantage...

Media General is probably the big winner overall, as they have a chance to rebuild three very low-rated stations (WSLS in Roanoke, WCBD in Charleston and WVTM in Birmingham) and play hardball on Sinclair. In all three cases, another station (owned by Raycom in two cases and Schurz in the third) is the market leader.

At 8:07 PM, July 30, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Kane probably won't be affected. He's just the type of young cheap talent Sinclair loves. Alyson? Not so sure.

They have intentions of changing things at the station level. That much is true, if nothing else. So it's a lie.

At 2:25 PM, July 31, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think KATV will have a lot of choices to make.
Will they keep Christina or Beth? (My guess is Christina because Beth doesn't want to anchor at 10:00.)
Will it be Ned or Barry? (My guess is Ned stays at a reduced salary. Barry makes too much and does too little.)
As for the morning show, if anyone goes it will likely be Alyson who, like Barry, makes too much and does too little.
News management will likely be impacted -- say "so long" to Rusty -- but Nick will stay because of how well the station has performed under his direction.

I expect to see more MMJs, which means the photography staff will be whittled down.

I would also expect that an editor or two might be let go and photographers will be forced to edit their own pieces.

Reduction in the bottom line will eventually lead to changes that viewers will definitely notice.

KATV has been too fat, too long. Only the foolish didn't see this coming. I don't know of any station in the country this size where six on-airs make over $100K

Only big cut I see is in weather and the bevy of blondes. Munoz doesn't cut it either.

At 10:18 AM, August 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wonder if the "movie critic" will be relegated to her primary job responsibility only sparing the viewers from listening to her? Munoz, Barry, Big Mel, ALYSON, Sully, the former model turned "parenting expert" & Pederson are all candidates to trim you would think. What about the lesser of the on air talents Big Red & Kat? Will they be of any value to stay?

At 10:29 AM, August 01, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I doubt they will cut any of the 30-thousandaires no matter how little talent they may have.

Peeon producers are just that, and always will be. Fuck the rest of the staff, and definitely fuck sports. National handles anything we care about. Giodbye Sully, and good luck finding a sponsor for this year's Friday night football.

As a viewer, I don't understand KATV's personnel scheduling and haven't for years. Peterson should be the lead reporter and not doing 7 on Your Side. The rotating PM anchor chairs are very inconsistent. Will we see Scott, Scott and Beth, Beth, Christina, Christina and Scott, Barry or Ned, who knows?
And where is Joan Early? Really?

Sounds like to me that the previous GM just let the on-air staff do what they wanted to do.

And forget about being THE Razorback station. The SEC Network and CBS will take care of that.

Since everyone is weighing in, here is my critique without a motive: I don't know Christina, but I can see why someone would think she comes across as fake. Honestly she kind of does. That doesn't mean I think she is any sort of mean spirited person. It is just a talent problem that she may be able to work on if she tries.

It sounds like she is a nice and genuine person though, and I think the person who keeps bringing it up must have an old personal problem.

At 9:35 AM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Others would like to point out that anyone sitting in that chair has done well. It's history and habit as much as anything. Those of us who are 20 years her senior know she didn't build that. Even then it wasn't just the anchors that made KATV great. It was just as much the professionals behind the scenes who made them look and sound better than the people across the street.

To give Christina credit for ratings is just not fair. It takes a village, and in this case it takes the history of that village too.

Fake Christina has as much credibility of delivering hard news stories as Katie Couric did. A viewer cannot relate to her in that sense. If she wants to kick Big Mel off of the morning show host couch then she could possibly fit in there. Neither of them mean ratings & you can throw in the THV / KLRT caliber reporters Kat & Big Red as well & the obnoxious sales woman/movie critic all in that lot. Inman, Sugar Kane, Beth Hunt they all = ratings for KATV

At 11:54 PM, August 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So the people you like = ratings for KATV and the people you don't like don't have any impact on the ratings. Got it! Now I think you should stop talking for a while you sound somewhere between pathetic and jealous.

At 6:47 AM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Just a viewer said...

Can we still say the network's prime time line up has anything to do with ratings for the 10 pm news? I don't think so. When half the state is watching the season premiere of Duck Dynasty next week will they keep the TV on A&E or change it to KATV at 10?

Also, since I don't understand TV ratings, is KATV putting on a 51-7 Miami butt whipping on the Hogs on their home turf, or is this a 21-20 squeaking-by win over the competition?

At 7:57 AM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's a butt whipping, and they're undefeated for like 4 straight seasons now.

At 8:10 AM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It depends which show you are talking about. There aren't too many butt kickings as some posters would have you believe and in the May book everyone advanced on KATV. That is how you read books anyway: are you making progress? If the answer is yes then congrats. Everyone made gains on them last book. But hey, its just one book. It could be a fluke. Now over the last couple of years KATV has really done well, as some posters have pointed out. Could you pin that on one Anchor? Sure, but then you have to look at who was anchoring before that progress... in this case they are the same people. The same people who saw a pretty big tumble in the separation compared to the old days. How is that possible if everyone watches just for their favorite anchor?

At 9:23 AM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The idea that these old fashioned books are even sort of accurate is pretty ridiculous. Do you honestly believe the people sampled give a sideways screw what they write down? If so, you really need a reality check.

At 3:08 PM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If it's not the anchors changes (Alyson to the mornings, Beth to five, Erin on the weekends), then what do you attribute to the ratings increase over the past two years? KATV has increased it's ratings and share over THV at ten for 8 straight books. If you follow ratings closely, KATV was actually 2nd and falling into third about 3 years ago. Now, if they don't win the mornings outright, people are saying that they are slipping. You may not like the people or the product, but someone does. What other major changes were there?

At 5:08 PM, August 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have no idea why anyone would turn on the news on purpose. I can see and read all the content on facebook and the web at my convenience. And I don't have to wade through stories about the nutricianal value of peanuts either.

Weather? Well maybe if I'm close to heading for the bathtub. Other than that, everything I need is on my phone. Again, it's at my convenience.

Sports? Bahahahah.what a joke. Even the fayetteville elite barely give the local people the time of day. It's all on espn. And youtube has the local football covered better than the "Friday Night Whatever" shows ever did. Kids get to see much more of the highlights and a higher viewing audience. One more time... at their convenience.

In other words, no one has to drop what they are doing and rush over to watch a 10pm newscast. It's silly to do so.

It ain't gonna change any time soon. Yes it'd make perfect sense to meter it. But all the stations have to agree to it. KATV never will as long as the separation is there. Now if we give Sinclair a couple years to wreck it apart, we might see that change. But it will take time tod wreck it, and even more time fo viewers to notice.

At 9:03 AM, August 09, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe the poster who keeps bashing Christina is beating around the bush more than he/she says. I have a critique of her that hasn't been brought up. She is not super hot. She is very average looking. No, she's not ugly, but Jessica Dean is WAY hotter.

You're right to say that Nielsen diaries are flawed - studies have shown that PBS stations get higher ratings in diary markets because people want to look smart. What you may not realize is that people in metered markets complain about that system as well.

Critics say that even metered numbers are skewed, claiming Nielsen is less likely to give a box to lower-income families out of fear they'll get robbed and the thieves will make off with their box along with the family's TV set.

Since both methods are now coming into question, Rentrak is starting to pick up more clients, but I'm sure people will complain about them as well.

Bottom line: whatever system doesn't make you look good is "wrong" and whichever one does make you look good MUST be "right."

At 7:45 AM, August 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That would depend on if Sinclair decides to uphold everyone's contract. Just to avoid being labeled the big bad wolf, I think they will. In which case, that means it'll be a slow domino effect. It'll start with the first unlucky girl, who just happens to have the closest anniversary date, and continue from there. So my guess is probably this spring we will begin to see changes.

At 2:23 PM, August 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'll chime in here as one who knows Christina moderately well. No, I don't work at 7 nor in the market.

She is "good people". When she came to LR a decade ago, she joined a #1 station and worked her way up from reporting to the main evening anchor. They're still #1.

Very, very few anchors can lift a #3 and make it #1. Very few. It's not her fault she joined a #1 but she certainly plays a role in keeping KATV's ratings strong.

For those who are jealous and taking their shots, every anchor understands having a thick skin is part of the job. That's fine. Yet ask yourselves why Christina was able to rise up. Perhaps they simply liked her more. Perhaps she offered more value (she does speak Spanish in a market where that is more and more of a demographic) to the station. It's an inexact science but, for those who are upset or feel they were passed over for a job, send links out to other stations. If you send to 50 other stations and near nothing back, there's your answer.

As for the Sinclair acquisition, it will have a clear effect at 7. Not right away but it will. As people hit their anniversary dates in their contracts (assuming they have the boilerplate "we can terminate you without cause at each anniversary date" clause, I would expect Sinclair to use that to clear the decks and lower expenses).

I would be really nervous if I'm an anchor making more than 75k and who can only read.
