Sports MIA at Shreveport Station

This bit of info was received on Monday:

On several occasions over the past few days, KTBS (ABC) in Shreveport has not had a local sportscast. Instead, they have been airing a taped sportscast from the ABC affiliate in New Orleans. This past Sunday at 10, KTBS did not have any sports in their hour-long newscast. They have been without a #2 sports person for several weeks.

Fletcher must be on vacation. Sportscast is coming from WVUE. Guessing that this will do in a pinch. Afterall KTAL is setting the precedent with it's nooncast of Arkansas Today out of Little Rock.

Shape of the future of "local" TV?
Hmmmmm?

Your right, the infection is spreading. First KTAL, now KTBS. KSLA is the lone holdout so far.

Some would argue that with their extended newscasts, much of what KSLA uses are feeds, fluff and filler already. So the future is here already in some form or fashion.
Go Raycom!

It's all fluff, lies and BS both local and national. It's a job and that $UCK... good day!

So have they finally decided on Spoons replacement yet, or are they still rejecting everyone?

Fletch better be careful. If they keep doing doing newscasts without sports, they'll decide he isn't necessary. Too bad KTBS moves so slowly on hires. A good manager would have found someone by now, but we're dealing with Randy and George. Two of the worst bosses in history.

Fletch has a very high opinion of Fletch.

With the rep they have I am surprised anyone is willing to work there.

I thought the job listing was taken off KTBS's website and was therefore filled. Not true?

At 11:33 AM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's anyone's guess as to what & why they do what they do at KTBS. Take Jennifer Gray as an example...she's here and then she's not...then she's back again...then she's not (and Reeve's Marine is tanking).
You could imagine them talking to Linnea Fayard who used to work at KSLA but got tired of Ed Bradley giving her dirty looks, besides she would rather be singing anyway.
Bottomline is that the gals they may be looking at may not want to come here unless they get paid at a certain level, anyone good that is. Stay tuned.

At 11:47 AM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 11:33

If I remember correctly on the Jennifer deal, on her return trip, KTBS sacked an old vet to make room for her return and then she's gone again........

At 12:37 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your right 11:47. KTBS got rid of Mark Rowlett to bring Jennifer back. That was due to pressure from Reeves Marine. Reeves is about to out of business so Brad and Jen moved back to Florida. Mr. Russell must be spinning in his grave. Mark is in a much better situation now. He is back home in Texas and chief meteorologist at KTXS ABC 12 in Abilene. Karma strikes again.

At 12:44 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@9:35 KTBS has openings not posted on the website. I know two people who applied for positions that aren't posted.

At 12:50 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good riddance to Reeves Marine. They had a high opinion of themselves and were jerks to do business with. There's a ton of baggage with those folks. Rusty & Rodney had a major falling out a few years back about the time things were going south biz-wise. The old man had some fallout from the Southern Bass Assn after some sponsors started looking into the books. Not as reputable as folks have been led to believe.

At 12:56 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

HaH!! I could see them getting Seva May to read the prompter for sports maybe to get co-op business from SB Magazine. Anyone remember when Mizz GeorJUH read the news prompter for KSLA? That was a partnership deal with her hubby's printing company.

At 3:30 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@ 12:37

Thanks for the verification. Glad Mark is doing well. Seemed like a good guy. You're right about Reeves Marine. Went downhill when Rusty hung it up. I'll just let your imagination go from there as to the downfall.

Oh thats all? Then clearly they don't have enough responsibilities. They are supposed to have the responsibilities of 3 or 4 people, not just 2. Everyone else does.

Why did Jody leave a major market like Florida and return to KTBS/Shreveport? Not that I am complaining, she is an excellent anchor but with all the negative postings about KTBS, I am surprised she returned to Shreveport. I am in the oil and gas business, so know nothing about what goes on behind the scenes in the television industry so someone please enlighten me.

At 1:48 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:31 Jody came back to Shreveport from Tampa because it was a promotion with more money for her. Plus Jody is an Arkansas girl so she is much closer to home and her family here then she was in Tampa. You see moves like this all the time. A reporter, or a morning or weekend anchor, in bigger markets moving to a smaller market for a main anchor or co-anchor position.

At 3:31 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tampa-St. Pete is a much more competitive market for TV folks so who knows, maybe she saw that her tenure there would be shorter than it would if she came back to KTBS.
Considering that some anchors stay at KTBS for 10+ years, it's a safe bet that at her age she won't need to worry about getting kicked by a younger gal in a more competitive market.

At 4:39 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are a lot of markets where the anchors stay 10 years or longer. Many of the main anchors in Top 10 markets are 35-65 and stay in that position 10-20 years or longer. It used to be that way here.

At 4:49 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@4:39 is right on that point. I know none of the main anchors at KNBC in LA are under 40, and they have been with the station since before many of you started kindergarten.

At 5:06 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well I for one am glad Jody is back. I have always liked her and was happy she came back. Hopefully she will stay this time.
Has anyone heard from Spoon since she left? How does she like it in Green Bay?

At 10:01 PM, July 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well if you ever get to visit Tampa/St.Pete, tune in to their newscasts. The women they have on-air are pretty smoking for the most part and they don't eat much. Unlike Shrevespork, the stations there are very body-style conscious about appearances. Heck some of the on-air gals even have their own fitness websites on the side if that gives you any idea.

At 12:09 PM, July 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have they found a placement for Spoon yet? I saw Fletch a week or two ago and he was looking really tired.

4:39 & 4:49:
You folks are comparing apples to organges. Top 10 mkts are mucho-different than any other mkts. Those folks are knocking down serious, serious coin and have negotiated contracts by Hollywood or NY Media agents who lock in performance clauses like you wouldn't believe.
Tampa/St. Pete has it's share of main-stayers but they change on-air folks every couple of years or so.
And if memory serves, Ms Lowery worked at a CABLE NEWS CHANNEL, not a regular affiliate. Big difference. Also the times are a changing for high-paid anchors, as contracts no longer get renewed more often than not these days.
Shrevesburg used to keep folks, heck at KTBS you could pretty much suck wind at your anchor job but as long as you showed up, you had a job. Liz Swaine got the boot because she got so full of herself and was making 6 figures, so they basically hurt her ego by knocking her off the 5pm and had her do more field reporting. That didn't set well with the diva so she quit. And many crew-members were glad to see her go. With cost-cutting the cry of managers, anyone with a brain would know that they have only so much shelf-life on air. Reduce the hassle and make as much as you can. Try to snag a wealthy mate, suck up to the right folks and get a high-paying PR or bureaucratic job and milk the gravy-train...that's the Shreveport way!!

At 9:29 PM, July 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, so what? We already know all this. That's the way it is and that's they way it will always be here.

At 1:41 PM, July 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

8:04 seems to be pretty spot-on. I have a friend who used to work at KSLA and he told me that's what happened to Karin Adams. She was working maybe 4 hours a day tops and making really good money. New management came in and had everyone take a 20% cut and wanted her to do more hours as in location reporting. But that would've gotten in the way of her tennis game in the afternoons so she quit.
I imagine this is common when someone makes too much money in this market.

At 8:38 PM, July 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is not a new phenomena in Shreveport broadcasting. Both Karin Adams and Liz Swain are just following in the footsteps of former KTBS co-anchor Ann Beebe. Ann married Vivian business man and politician Jimmy Wilson back in the 1970's. After Jimmy's two failed champagnes, and his increased craziness, Ann divorced him and moved down to Baton Rouge.

At 1:10 PM, July 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anne Beebe, was she related to the Beebe of the AMI scandal? I recall she was a buxom brunette with mediocre on-air skills.

Does anyone at KTBS know if they are even interviewing anyone for the sports reporter position that is currently open?

Good question. Begging to think they are not. I know two people who applied to replace Spoon, but they were rejected out of hand. Both of whom have more experience going into the job then Spoon did.

Jimmy's failed champagnes .... lol.... either he was a lousy vintner or a politician who was a lousy speller.

HA, that's funny 7:40. I just did a double take on that one myself. Don't know about Jimmy's spelling abilities, but he was a lousy politician.

At 8:24 PM, July 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:38

You really had to dig for that one. It's been so long I had forgotten about Ann Beebe and Jimmy Wilson. All that happened long before many on here were born.

At 4:04 PM, July 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Every prospective sports replacement has been shot down. Either that, or they won't accept the obvious low pay. Apparently their "plan" is to keep running generic sports vids from New Orleans. And if their "plan" is to alienate the remaining viewers that watch for more local (high school, etc) sports, than this "plan" is working to perfection.

At 10:20 PM, July 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey if this trend works and they keep profits ahead of expenses, who knows? Maybe news will be outsourced to syndicated shows that are free?

At 1:05 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That wouldn't surprise me, but without local news local stations would be irrelevant.

At 2:10 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Is Fletcher the big obstacle or is it George Sirven regarding why some of the people who applied for the job have not been hired?

At 3:46 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Could be. Fletch is cool, but George is not. There is definitely something going on there.

At 4:50 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:05 PM: With the way local TV news has been going, local TV is getting more and more irrelevant with each passing year. I rarely watch local news anymore, except maybe to catch a weather forecast. And then I have to suffer through all the bullshit graphics explanations... I just want to know is it going to rain or not by tonight, tomorrow or next day. Forget all the 10 day nonsense...it changes in 72 hours in most cases.
Yep...local TV is pretty much irrelevant IMHO

At 4:52 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heard that Sirven re-hired one of his buds back to the station, so I'm guessing he has to squeeze the cash out from some other budget to keep Edwin happy.

4:52 PM Who did George re-hire and for what position?

At 10:36 PM, July 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just saw the sports on KTBS done from New Orleans affiliate. The guy looks much better and reads much better, is there that much of a need for a local sports guy?

At 11:55 PM, July 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is a need if they plan to cover local sports. There are also those football shows they have on Friday nights during high school football season.

At 9:24 AM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Of course we do 10:36. With as many athletes as we have here in the ArkLaTex we need local sports reporters.

At 12:17 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd say that if the local stations really focused on local sports, they'd do pretty well but they seem to spend too much time on the road doing LSU or New Orleans Saints stuff that could be better served by affiliates in NOLA or BR. There could be considerable cash to gain if the local sports dorks would focus all their efforts on the 60 mile radius instead of pretending to be big time with the Tigers, Saints & Cowboys. Guess they want the road trip so as to PahTAY on the company dime and personal biz write off.

At 1:30 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not gonna happen. We have a demand for local, collage, and pro sports in this market, and we are going to continue to meet that demand.

In your mind that is.

At 3:18 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Makes sense to me. KTBS must not have thought about this Lots of Baton Rouge and New Orleans "sport covering" trips seem to turn into family trips. I wonder on who's dime?

At 3:43 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what, the Wary's charge trips and everything else to the station all the time.

At 3:56 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sounds like nothing has changed. The Wray's were charging personal expenses to the station back when I worked there.

At 4:28 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's what happens when you have a family owned business. Even when it's owned by a broadcast corporation those things still happen. The GM's at two of my former stations charged personal expenses for themselves, their spouses, and their grow kids every week. Gas, oil changes, car washes, tires, restaurants, furniture, lawn service, landscaping, hardware, and sporting goods for them and their kids. The list goes on and on. I couldn't believe some of the expenses that came across my desk.

At 6:09 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I meant Fletcher family trips. The owners can do as they please.

At 7:01 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

When I worked at one of the local stations, the GM would rob the "Prize Closet" of program promotional items for the Kid's Programs. It was unbelievable, this guy was making really good money but he was too cheap to buy his own Christmas or B/D gifts for his family & family. But whenever we had a promotion prize, we'd have to get approval from him first so we wouldn't give away the best stuff to our viewers. Cheap bastard.

At 7:02 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So what, George doesn't have a problem with it, why do you?

At 7:08 PM, July 24, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@7:01 You must have worked at KMSS/KSHV. Both Joe Sugg and Mark Cummings used to rob that prize closet in the conference room all the time.

Aha, I see we have more former ComCorp people on here. 7:01 PM and 7:08 PM are correct. Both Joe and Mark hit the prize closet regularly. I posted the 4:28 PM comment and Joe is one of the two GM's I was referring to. I forgot to mention that Joe also had the station pay for his grocery bill on top of everything else.

To those that watch KTBS, you'll know where I'm coming from. Have Rhonda do the sports when Fletch is away. She's just a step behind Fletch with her wit.

Wow, I thought the same thing 8:36. It's nice to know someone else feels the same way. Rhonda is very lively and she would be great at sports. I hope she sticks around for a while. Seems like so many at 3 don't even last a year any more.

To the folks who've commented about former KMSS GM Joe Suggs: That guy was a certifiable lunatic! He would claim to be all Christian and such but he was such a dick! Suggs was a paranoid/schizo, always calling and accusing people of oddball stuff. He did that with employees and clients alike. I saw him accuse an agency rep of stealing a tape dub, but it was the agency's tape to begin with. The rep didn't take kindly to it and there were words. Agency contacted ComCorp corporate and told them about it. Just one of many instances. I left there as quickly as I could. Suggs and his idiot son were crazy.

At 6:58 PM, July 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep, your exactly right. Joe did all that and much more. Were you there when Joe's son Chris got five or six of his buddies from LSUS jobs at the station? Only one of them was any good. Another one bullied Chris into getting the job. Then he bullied his way into a higher position and wound up staying for about 10 or 11 years. He should have never been hired in the first place.

At 7:48 PM, July 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

WOW, you guys win. I've always heard KMSS was "f"ed up, but thats crazy. The drama at my station doesn't even come close to all that.

2:04 I can tell you who does think highly of Tim Fletcher, his mousy wife. I have had her in my place trying to sell me advertising on his radio show. Not pleasant at all.

At 8:43 PM, July 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sugg's son, Chris was so stupid, he could barely read, much less write a coherent sentence. What waste of flesh!! Joe had some bizarro hires at the station. Some really, really strange people coming & going in sales. Lots of questionable deals going on off-the-book. ComCorp must not pay too close attention at what happens there from what I saw. Very odd place.

I guess Fletch must have this Jay-Leno affinity thing going. Odd-looking face, messy hair, goofball delivery. If he has any audience appeal, it escapes me but so does a lot of what flies in Shrevesdump TV.

I'm stationed at BAFB and have been here for almost a year. I don't work in TV but have given it some thought as a job when I get out. Judging from what I've seen that is local TV news and reading the back-story on this blog, I don't think I'll stick around this area for that. I am surprised at what local TV looks like here compared to other places I've been stationed. For cities this size, I would expect better. Maybe I don't get it because I'm not from around here. Anyway that's how I see it.

Your making a very wise decision not getting into broadcasting airman. With consolidations, and changing viewing habits, there are fewer and few jobs in the business every year. You may want to re-enlist, or consider another civilian field.

Seeing as how the threads shifted to comments about KMSS, I have to add something to the mix. Seems the choice of GM's at KMSS have been of people who have a history of mental illness; either from some weird upbringing or some of which may have been caused by substance abuse. Here's what I observed.

I had some dealings back when the station was first started by a group led by Joe Waggoner. Their first GM was some con-man whose dubious behaviors caused him to skip town, taking the company car with him. Then there was another GM who always seemed to be on meds, allegedly stole the station out from the previous owners in a bankruptcy legal move. His dope-head son who was on probation for a number of drug-related crimes, ran a stoplight, killing a local financial planner and tried to leave the scene. But despite his dad's trying to pay witnesses, wound up in Angola for vehicular manslaughter. Then came the religious nut who was crazier than a loon. And then another who would start several projects only to retreat to his office like Major-Major in the movie "Catch-22".

Good gawd almighty.... it seems that being mentally imbalanced is a pre-requisite to being hired as a GM at KMSS. Must be the same for all stations as I can't remember too many GM's who were liked over the past 20 some years. I'm not sure being a GM in TV is such a good thing to be, to have so much drama and hate.

Doug, is that you?

At 11:24 AM, July 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was about to ask the same thing. Whomever posted the KMSS GM history is spot-on. My brief stay there was enlightening as to how low people could go. To call KMSS a hostile working environment at the time would be understatement. Clueless owners letting the lunatics run the asylum is how I'd put it. Other places I've worked at, you'd get taken out in handcuffs if you did some of what went on at KMSS when I was there. It was unbelievable. I wonder if much has changed.

At 5:07 PM, July 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I completely agree and had the same experience at KMSS as you. It is by for the worst place I have ever worked. It was beyond hostile. I saw more state and federal laws broken at KMSS then any place I have ever worked before or since. During the time I was there, KMSS had two nut job general managers, three chief engineers, four promotions managers, a dozen promotions producers, 15-20 account executives, and over 30 master control operators. In fact one of the MCO's died on the job in the control room, and strange things started happening in the control room after that. It wasn't just the station. The building itself had this negative vibe to it.

At 6:00 PM, July 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow! Reading some of these KMSS comments brings back awful memories. I worked there as it was about to change hands and it was strange, strange, strange. The comments about nutjob GM's is true. The Chief Engineer at the time was a thief and the GM knew it and let him do as he pleased. The bldg. is an old Kroger's and instead of doing his job, the CE was ripping out the old copper from the Kroger A/C & reefer units and selling copper for salvage. All this was going in his pocket, he was an F'ng lowlife, trailer-trash psycho anyway. The GM knew this was going on and turned a blind eye. When the bldg. owners had an insurance inspection, they failed eligibility because of the torn up A/C & reefer. So they had to spend thousands getting it patched so we could get fire insurance. That was just one of many, many, many instances. I left as soon as I could, F'd up people in mngmnt, sales and others who would steal on ad trade deals at restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations, hotels; unbelieveable at what went on there. Lying, backstabbing thieves is what was at KMSS.

OMG, it's true! I just heard from a former KMSS co-worker things were being talked about on here, and boy are they. All this is bringing back bad memories I have repressed, and tried to forget about for years. I know about most of the things discussed in previous comments, and so far they are 100% correct. KMSS holds the distinction of being the most dysfunctional and hostile work environment I have ever encountered since I first started working in 1982.

At 1:03 PM, July 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Got an e-mail from an old TV co-worker about the KMSS postings. LoL!
Most of what I read is a pretty good account, some I can't comment on 'cuz it may have happened after my tenure at 33. I have to say that while many stations I've worked at had their peculiarities, KMSS was by far the worst of my experiences. It makes working for the postal service sound good. I blame incompetent ownership, dysfunctional personalities in management and sales and a thorough lack of accountability for much of the problems at that station. It seems there was no sane, ethical personalities in charge. I worked with some decent people but they, like myself found other jobs and left as soon as they could. Pity too because at the time, the Fox station could've been "a contender" with just a little commitement and seed money. But instead the owners put leeches in charge who were only concerned with their own compensation and little else. How that place has managed to stay operational is sad testament to local TV. Glad to be so gone from that place.

No, not a word. Still rejecting everyone out of hand.

At 1:20 PM, July 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

FWIW, gotta say the KMSS folks posting has been entertaining to say the least. If half of what what I read is true, KMSS . ComCorp has got to be one F#@ked place to work!

Back to KTBS Sports:
Wonder if they'll have Gerry do sports in rotation?

At 2:35 PM, July 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:20

You got that right. ComCorp is majorly f'ed up. Believe me, I was there and I can assure you everything thats been posted in these KMSS comments is 100% accurate. Whats been discussed so far is just a small fraction of what all goes on there even to this today.

Sports at KTBS is almost nonexistent now. I've started watching 6 or 12 for sports.

At 9:21 PM, July 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find it interesting that KTBS has 3 main and 2 fill in meteorologists but can't find a single sports reporter. Obviously there is a problem there.

At 11:43 AM, July 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's getting to where I rarely tune in to local news much anymore. Aside from a quick look at weather, I seem to stumble across local newscasts instead of tune in on purpose, even with the extended broadcasts on some stations, I really don't watch local news like I used to.

At 11:47 AM, July 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who messed up the 11:30 newscast just now? You should have gone to break to take care of Rhonda's mic problem. The B block looked like crap!

At 11:53 AM, July 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was about to ask the same thing 11:47. That was totally unacceptable and unprofessional. At least Rhonda has a good sense of humor and played it off as best she could.

At 12:02 PM, July 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah that was really bad. Then they had the nerve to run the LA Association of Broadcasters "Station of the Year" promo after that. If that's the best you can do you do not deserve that award.

At 12:24 PM, July 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hum, I missed that one. Sounds like a major cluster f'.

9:21 PM has a very good point. 3 has extra meteorologists but only one sports person. What's that all about?

I agree with the comments about all of KTBS's mets, but no new sports person. Still not sure what so many people think is so great about Tim Fletcher. Last night he was wearing a bow tie. So, he not only talked and acted like a damn fool, but looked like one as well.

I think the callers are right. Tim Fletcher can't seem to make up his mind if he wants to be a sports anchor or a comedian.

At 1:30 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OMG! Why are you all complaining about this after all these years? Fletch has been doing the same goofy comedian sportscaster schtick his entire career. One would think you all would be used to it by now since Fletch has been doing it for 20 some odd years here in this market.

At 1:34 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We have always been knowing that Fletcher has done this silly BS his entire career. But has this website been active for 20 years?

At 2:41 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 1:30 PM poster:
Believe it or not, there's probably more than a few people who haven't watched Tim Fletcher and/or KTBS as much as you. So it would seem reasonable for them to comment more recently. Don'tcha think? Despite what some TV folks think, the world doesn't revolve around their lives or silliness.

At 6:05 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well evidently the viewers disagree since more people watch KTBS then KSLA and KTAL. Fletch has worked at 2/3 of the Shreveport news stations for over 20 years. He was at KTAL for several years before he moved over to KTBS.

At 6:22 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lots of these local and network sports reporters are doing the same goofy sports guy thing that Fletcher does. I am not a Fletcher fan by any means, but there are plenty of people who are. I really don't like the sports reporters we have now. The only ones who don't get on my nerves, and make me instantly change the channel, are Adria Goins at KSLA, and Brandon Dunn at KTAL. I would much rather have Ed Baswell and Bob Griffin back doing sports.

At 6:49 PM, August 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

6:05pm: Seriously? You think most people's lives revolve around these bullshit TV stations and their on-air personalities? Maybe KTBS gets the better ratings but not everyone watches TV much less KTBS. Get a grip!

At 8:16 AM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To Fletch:

It is not a question of hate, but competence, common sense and courtesy to the local viewers. It is one thing to say one or two things that are humorous, but you spend practically your entire air time trying to be cute and funny.

No, sports does not, and should not, be so serious that the sportscaster cannot have a little fun while delivering the sports news, but not the entire sports segment.

You only have just a few minutes in the first place, so give us as much local and regional sports as possible and save the comedy bit for your radio program.

At 11:46 AM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

HA, good on Fletch. LMAO!

8:38 PM Are you talking about Janine D' Adamo? Not sure where she is now.

At 11:49 AM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

FWIW, back in my radio days we had a saying about on-air folks who knew "when and how to pull-the-trigger"
regarding on-air reparte' and humor. I had some old-timers for mentors and those with the better "Q" ratings shared with me a simple thought:
"Less is often more".
Of course today with 24/7 tweeting, Facebook and self-focused talents, and short-attention span theaterics, it makes you wonder if someone like that could even get noticed anymore.
Give 'em hell Fletch but I think the take-away from all this is knowing when to say when.

At 11:53 AM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jeanine D'adamo is doing weather in Ft. Myers, FL. She left to do weather in Dallas and then back to her home state. This is waaay second hand so I can't say if it's true or not but someone at KTBS told me she had a nickname Jeanine "I Don't Know" after blowing a weatherforecast when a major storm/tornado hit N. Bossier supposedly after her weathercast for a "chance of rain".

At 6:12 PM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, that's her. Jeanine D'Adamo, I couldn't remember her name to save my life. It's been so long I had totally forgotten about all that. Now there have been several tornados to hit North Bossier over the past 10 or 15 years. Was that the Good Friday tornado she missed, or was it one of the other Easter week tornados we had for a several years?

At 7:20 PM, August 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Seems I remember something about that but I can't pick the exact time. I do think it was around Easter. I think someone was killed or seriously injured in the trailer park in N. Bossier near the former La. Hayride Kitchen.
If I remember right, the tornados hit and she was no where to be found. Don't know if she took off or what but it did create some sort of stink.

"If you don't watch TV then why are you on here?"

If you READ MORE CAREFULLY...you'd see that I SAID: "....not everyone watches"... Everyone defined is:
a plural pronoun, whereas: YOU is
a singular pronoun.

The response was made in regard to clarifying that while KTBS may have the news ratings....that is just a segment of the total population, both viewers & non viewers. (You do know the diff between rating & share?). It seems that some KTBS'ers...(BS'ers...how appropo!) get their tighty-whities in a wad whenever someone suggests that not everyone rushes home to tune in to a Channel 3 newscast. Heaven forfend! The ArkLaTex doesn't fall into sharing "THE VISION!" :O
I guess if I was so enamored with 3, I would get testy. But to address your query as to "what am I doing here?" As if it's any of your GD biz, I observe all local media, even KTBS on occasion.
So there. NYAH! NYAH! NYAH!!

After seeing these "whatever happened to" posts I was wondering whatever happened to Andy and Wanda Pontz? I was also wondering if Jody Lowrey is married. I've always liked Jody, but my cousin is crazy about her. If Jody's not on he won't watch the news.

At 2:48 PM, August 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Andy "retired" from TV after his last post at KTAL. Not sure what Wanda is up to. I think they were looking at moving out-of-state for retirement. I always liked Andy as he had a good sense about news. I think he got tired of dealing with the folks in the newsroom as he got older though. He let Liz Swaine get away with a lot of crap while ND at 3. They hired his replacement (Rich?) to take her down a notch and piss her off enough to quit. Then Rich got canned.

I tend to agree with some of the above comments about Tim Fletcher. Although he seems to be a really nice guy, he does seem to try too hard to be funny when he does the sports.

I think you nailed it. Tim Fletcher comes off as a likeable guy but seems to try too hard to be funny. Maybe needs an outlet like open-mic at the a local comedy club or something to get his comedic chops toned up or something.

I agree with with what most have said about Tim. He does seem to be a very nice guy, but his constant obsession in cracking jokes does get a little old.

She, nor I, have ever "laid it on thick". Please, i beg of you, tell me the name of your business so I make sure we don't cause you such a traumatic experience.
by your anonymous-ness, i doubt you will publish your name or business, so feel free to email me: tfletcher@ktbs.com

I work in media sales and can assure you,the sales for Tim Fletcher's show are not even on anyone's radar. No George or The Wray family doesn't care.
Tim you and your wife do both cold call. I have seen you myself.

At 11:05 PM, August 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

cold call? you, sir or madam, are a liar. Not one time in my 15 years of having a sports talk radio show do we "cold call", or have i ever "cold called" a potential sponsor. Contact via e-mail or a phone call to gauge interest always comes first, if not during a personal visit when the business owner expresses interest.

as far as sales of our Friday Night Show... I have no clue. We have a title sponsor, as always. We are still doing one hour of programming, which I bet will features spots.

Still waiting to hear what business you own that my "mousy wife" and i cold called. lying sack of crap---please, i BEG of you, leave your name and business in my email.

I know you're cowardly based on your anonymous claims... someone mentioned to me that i was getting hammered on this blog, which i do read occasionally and have commented on---always with my name attached. Not sure why any of you are so frightened to lay a name down behind the bold taunts, claims and in the case of the "Cold Caller Bandit", outright lies.

Oh, that's right. The anonymity gives you power, doesn't it? Attack my family. check!
Attack my ability to earn a living?
Check!
Hide behind a rock and throw stones?
Check?
chicken-sh*t

as far as sports reporter, the station has hired Tatum Everett. Did a very solid job last weekend...comes from Sherman/Dennison market. Interned in New Orleans (WGNO) and Baton Rouge (WBRZ); graduate of LSU. Glad to have her.

Is KMSS for sale? Who knows anymore. ComCorp has been "entertaining offers" for about 10 or 15 years, but never goes through with anything. The last serious offer was about two years ago and nothing came of it.

As far as full HD that remains to be seen. KMSS is so jacked up it's a miracle they are on the air.

At 2:14 PM, August 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I remember a former KMSS engr. telling me he thought the place would collapse under its own weight.

At 7:25 PM, August 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7:03 Actually the last serious offer to buy KMSS was last year. It was Nexstars third attempt to buy KMSS, but that deal blew up about a month or two before they moved KTAL's master control to Little Rock.

At 8:59 PM, August 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have to share this tidbit. A few years back ComCorp was trying to buy a station in Nebraska. So the ComCorp exec-honchos were coming to town and it was like winter months. Station management drives black SUVs as do a lot of corporate types in Omaha. It's frickin' Nebraska for Christ's sakes!! Well when the company SUV pulled up to get them, they had a hissy-fit and made a big deal out of not being "picked up in a limo, fitting for execs such as they were..." It set the tone for the whole meeting. Needless to say, things didn't go well and so they left feeling insulted even though management did put them up in nice digs, did dinners, etc.
The Nebraska folks couldn't figure out why the SUV's were such a problem. I mean these were top of the line executive-class SUV's.
Kind of shows they mentality they have and their self-perception.

Not that it matters but does anybody have any ratings numbers to share on any of the local newscasts? Just curious to see the more recent books, especially to see if the KMSS 9pm "News" carries any substantive numbers.
