KTAL Now in HD

KTAL/Channel 6/Shreveport debuted news in High Definition today.  Included in the transformation is of course a new set, graphics and music.  From what I am seeing right now during the 10pm newscast it looks like the best think KTAL has ever put on air.  The set isn't overbearing with just one color like KSLA and KTBS.  Who knows this could put KTAL back in the news game!

You took the words right out of my mouth!!! Maybe we could see KTAL come up in ratings? Im curious to what the morning show will look like.

Morning show looked pretty good. Would like to see more of this set though.

It's going to take a lot more than a better HD signal and new set to "...put KTAL back in the news game..." What about competent reporting and reporters who can speak clearly with confidence in their reporting? Going to take more than hiring kids out of college to do that. No doubt there will be an uptick in ratings since some viewers won't switch due to crappy signal as before. But anyone who thinks all it takes to make a channel a "news station" is a new set and clear signal, needs to think a little harder about that statement.

Way to go KTAL! You'll pick up viewers and this will put you back in the game.

Morgan Thomas is one of the worst reporters, ND is crazy to let her on air!

Let first set the record straight. 12 & 3 aren't booming with talent. 3 has more leaving then coming. 12 isn't setting the world on fire with the talent they have. So before some start alking poorly about the talent at 6. Maybe they need to evaluate their talent and yes I said their talent since many on here work at 12 & 3, before they start to think they're the next best thing to cold beer. Food for thought!

Amen 1:16 and I agree completely 1:18.

The improvements at 6 look great, but it is still 6 after all. If ratings improve because of this good for you. You folks at 6 may not like the talent pool at 3 and 12, but both stations are far ahead of you in ratings.

I'm not a regular KTAL viewer, but I did watch yesterday out of curiosity. The improvements look great, but that's not enough to watching. Most of their on-air "talent" is not so great. Maybe that will be the next thing they work on.

At 5:58 PM, June 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's funny it doesn't seem that people will have nothing good to say about KTAL regardless of what they do. Makes you wonder why people are so interested in what goes on at 6. If they're so bad why do folks care?

At 6:11 PM, June 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We care because 6 is a terrible station and we hear about all your crap on here.

At 6:36 PM, June 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If can't say anything nice about someone, come sit by me. Seriously though, 6 has has never been well liked around here. The only people I've ever known who were regular viewers lived out in the country and in the Texarkana area. All of them have either passed on or moved away, so I have no idea what the folks in those areas watch now. This new set is pretty. I love all those colors their using. This is the best 6 has ever looked. Hopefully this will help them out.

At 6:38 PM, June 28, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't work at 6 I'm a viewer. I just don't understand at the negative people who get on here to bitch about channel 6 when 12 and 3 aren't lighting the world on fire. You work in market 82. Don't think your bigger then you are! If the folks were so GOOD at 12 and 3 why are most jumping ship and hate working at either. For what they say on here. Get a life, there is more to it then writing crap about people who clearly you don't know. If work is your life, then you have no life and that is sad!

I saw the 6:00 today and the new set looks much better then I thought it would. Maybe this is the turn around you've been needing.

FWIW, the on-air talent/reporting pool in this local TV market has been on the steady decline for the past 10 years or so. A lot of that has to do with the stations hiring practices and budgets. There are a few bright spots as far as reporting skills are concerned and some anchors do a decent job but generally speaking it's pretty sparse. This market used to be a pretty strong one but it has slid a good bit as long as I've been here.

At 7:43 AM, June 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

10:12 is 100% correct. Yes, there has been a noticeable decline in the talent pool at all three stations over recent years. I am a former broadcaster and Shreveport used to have a fantastic talent pool. The things they are allowed to get away with now were fireable offenses when I was in the business.

3 has so many problems now I am surprised anyone chooses to work there. Very unstable now where they used to have the same talent for 10 years or longer. Now they don't even last two years.

6 has never been a popular station. Most of the talent there is very poor. I am surprised Patrick Dennis and Michelle White-Lafette from 12 are there now. 6 used to be the training ground for 3 and 12. This new set looks amazing. I am actually shocked they look as good as they do. This may do it for them ratings wise.

12 has declined so much it's unrecognizable. Their talent is poor and the quality of their news is worse. 12 used to have such high news standards, but that must have ended when Don Owen left. 12 was also the most stable of the three stations. Not any more.

The saying you get what you pay for is so true. I know many of these young reporters are in their first or second job, but they really need to work on their reporting skills and most especially their voice and diction.

At 6:43 PM, June 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was a news photog back at KSLA back in the day of Owen & Staggs and I can tell you this much: rare was the occasion when a newscast had a miscue, glitch or "technical difficulty". Tech Directors had things run tighter than a tick and if something did get fouled up, people were reminded to not let it happen again. And when it comes to field reporting, no one ever wanted to get called in Owens office and asked to "shut the door". I remember two occasions where the reporters left, one in tears after such a meeting. They were gone the next day.
From where I see it, local TV here is run by children without adult supervision. They know enough to be dangerous and simply go through the motions.
Just calling it like I sees it.

WOW, is that really you KTAL? I am very impressed! Your new set, graphics and music package are perfect. Love the new graphics!!! You should have done this years ago. If you had it would have created some much needed competition for my old station. I haven't been back in Shreveport for about three years and I'm amazed how much better you look now. Way to go! I hope this will improve your ratings so you can stick it to my old station and knock them off their thrown.

It's really hard to believe you look as good as you do. The last time I was inside your station the place was dirty, ragged out, and literally falling apart. The air in the newsroom and studio was out, and you were off air due to equipment failure. WIth all the new equipment and everything you have now that should not be an issue any more.

@7:43 That is a very accurate assessment of the local market. I see a noticeable decline just in the three years since I've been gone. It's really sad because this used to be such a good market. Now there is some good talent here but I'm sure they will quickly move on to much bigger and better things. I totally agree with you about practicing their voice and diction. If I hear one more reporter say the word "axed" instead of "ask" I'll shoot the tv. Your a paid professional. Act like it.

At 7:11 PM, June 29, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@6:43 You are 100% correct. There is no comparison between KSLA then and KSLA now. They have multiple mistakes in every single newscast. It's pitiful!

I think if folks would do a little research, they might find that people got all in a tizzy when things like the WPA, NRA, Social Security Act, etc. were ushered in as a result of the Great Depression. If all we get for our information is the rantings and ravings of certain "media types" (who really are little more than inflammatory "entertainers"), then yeah...let's get hysterical, paranoid, dig fall-out shelters in the woods and stock up on canned goods, heating fuel and guns & ammo. Stuff happens and it takes a little stepping back to see the forest from the trees. America is evolving and this is what makes it the place it is and will continue to be.

I never thought I would see the day where KTAL looked better then KSLA and KTBS. My how things have changed.

At 11:44 AM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The improvements look great but there are a couple of things you need to work on with your weekend crew. First, stop run the ticker during the lottery drawing and open. You used to not run the ticker on weekends, but now your putting it up way to early. Second, you need to work on your banners and OTS's. They are either wrong, out of order, or your putting them up to late.

At 1:46 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not that you're wrong... but, it's the weekend crew. What do you expect from ANY weekend crew in this market?

At 2:47 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL has the image, they've never had that before. Now, they have to work on the anchors/reporters.

At 5:15 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@2:47... who needs to go? Besides the obvious (Mee-shell). Do they need to blow up the anchor desk?

At 8:51 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The new guy is good. Mee-shell wouldnt be so bad if she didn't stretch out words. reporters..well they need a new crew..

At 9:16 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:46 I expect the KTAL, and all weekend crews in this market, to be professional and not mess up every newscast. If they are un-able or un-willing to improve get rid of them.

@5:15 Speaking of blowing up the anchor desk, they need to blow up all the weekend anchors, the morning show anchor, and the diva. KTAL has an amazing image now. An image they've never had before. This is a golden opportunity for KTAL to shed their long held #3 position and those folks are holding the station back.

Oh believe me they do read this blog. They make references to it all the time. Even corporate reads this blog.

Ok, so how messed up the 10:00 a few minutes ago?

At 11:06 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, what was that all about? Was that a one person mess up or a multiple person mess up?

At 11:31 PM, July 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If corporate is looking at this blog, the weekends at KTAL need to be gutted. Their strongest on-air person is that quirky weather guy and that's a long shot. The anchor just doesn't have it. Reporter maybe. The reporters they have make we want to vomit.

Mornings are also bad. Patrick needs to calm down. It's just the weather. They either to need to move their current anchor or at the least get a co-host. It seems kind of lonely on the morning show.

Evenings are decent. Todd and Nick are decent. Michelle really could be a good anchor. She has the looks (kinda) and the voice. But, the over pronunciation would make anyone scream. It wouldn't take much. Then there's that horrible blonde reporter (you probably know who I'm talking about, the one talking about STD tests their first HD show). She has to go. I see no potential. An overall reporter overall (or training) is needed in all shows.

At 12:13 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Keep Brandon, Brian, Nick, Todd, and Patrick. Get rid of EVERYONE else and start over. Since she started out there call Sheri Tally and see if she is interested in coming back to work over there. She's well liked and may draw some viewers from KTBS.

At 12:20 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is off topic, but:
The other evening, the sports guy mentioned the distance between everyone on the set. When Michelle (jokingly I presume) suggested moving closer to him and actually did gesture in his direction, he quickly and sharply said something to the effect of "no, that's not what I meant". I thought it was off. Anyone else catch it?

At 8:39 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, I saw that too. The temp set they were on for almost two months was very small and they were almost elbow to elbow. This new set is much larger and the sports desk is set farther apart from the anchor desk. After being crammed together for two months it felt kind of strange to Gavin so he commented on it. Gavin had the same reaction to Michelle moving closer to him that Todd's had the entire time Michelle's been there.

At 10:01 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Patrick Dennis has the vocal qualities of a chainsaw. Nick is smooth but a little too plastic.
MeeShell overenunciates to slow-down delivery so her brain can catch-up with the prompter...no doubt. Todd is ok...likeable but nothing special. Some of the Af-American females need to smooth out their vocal-skills, not a racist-thing...it's just basic broadcasting 101...if you can't deliver smooth bites, you don't need to be in TV or radio unless your target audience is predominantly ethnic...(and even that demographic likes to hear smooth vocal delivery).
KTAL could kick some serious ass if they would innovate and stop imitating the other guys...because let's face it...the other guys aren't liked as much as they think they are. It's just that there's nothing else in the mkt for people to tune into local-newswise. Why do you think share averages have declined so much?

At 10:07 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

P.S. the "large studio/set appearance"...it's typical of TV stations to do that. KTBS for years promoted the snot out of their "Mega 3 Weather Lab" which was an impractical monstrosity. The bad thing about large sets is that they lose audience intimacy and are just flashy set-dressings. GM's seem to think that showing off sets is a way to distinguish their brand with viewers...but it often backfires as it further serves as a disconnect from the intimacy TV should have..."we're pleased to be invited into your home" sort of thing. But again it's typical corporate mindset...."look at how flash and Effing big WE ARE" woo-Hoo (Stroke--Stroke).

At 10:55 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is a valid point 10:01. Viewer share has declined in this market in recent years. Most of it is due to people tuning out watching other programming, and getting their news online. However, a small part of it is due to people leaving the area. The outward flow from the ArkLaTex as a whole is not nearly as bad as it was in the 1980's through the early 2000's, but it's still happening. Over 200 of my friends and relatives left the ArkLaTex during that time, but only 17 have moved back.

You don't like Patrick Dennis but you are in the minority on that. Patrick is very well liked and has been for many years. He's been on air first with KTAL, then KSLA, then back with KTAL for most of the past 25 years. Michelle is not well liked and would not be missed if she were demoted or replaced. Most of KTAL's reporters are pitiful and need some intensive training and more education. They may have passed their 101 classes but they need remediation.

KTAL had some really good anchors and reporters in the last 10 years but they ran them off. Someone earlier suggested getting Sherri Tally back over there. They should check into that and getting some of their other old anchors back. Plain Dealing girl Lane Stone and Delight Arkansas girl Shannon Slatton are good and extremely well liked. So was Shannon's Sports Director husband Dave Schwartz. To this day I still have viewers asking me about Dave and Shannon.

At 11:05 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree that if KTAL threw a lot of money at Sherri Talley and let her just show up and read, maybe she'd consider it. She'd be stronger than Michelle by a long shot. The morning anchor has to go, just not talented enough to be in a medium market, put her back in small market. Or maybe she could handle the weekend anchoring better than the current weekend anchor, who needs to be limited to reporting. Patrick Dennis is a tv show hog and I have trouble watching his antics. These comments are based off the 3 times I tuned in to KTAL because other than those, I can't take watching it. I haven't even tuned in to see the big new HD launch. Maybe things have changed for the better?

At 11:37 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If you haven't watched since the new set and HD was rolled out last week you have no room to talk. Besides you wouldn't switch over any way so who care.

At 11:52 AM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Lane Stone is working in NYC for NBC. Don't know if she'd like coming back to po-dunksville. As for Patrick Dennis, he's like Bob Griffin. You either like him or don't. I've heard people call him "Hatchet-head" because of how he parts his hair. I too agree, he has a grating voice to listen to in the AM. Sherri Talley would be a better choice than MeeShell but Nexstar won't write as big a check as she'd like. I heard she was making good scratch at KTBS but didn't want the extra work at doing the webmedia. So she bailed, thinking this tactic would work as she has done it before. It didn't

Dave and Shannon are both working in Minneapolis. He wouldn't give up the Vikings, Twins and Timberwolves to cover Huntington High...I can promise you that.
Lane just started a new job producing the the 9:00 show at WCBS in New York. She's excited to be back in the city. This is home, though. maybe in a couple of years, she might want to come back.

At 2:50 PM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your right but we can always dream. When Dave and Shannon moved to Minneapolis Dave was making enough money to support both of them, so Shannon took some time off and stayed at home for a while. They never could have done that here. Last I heard they were very happy in Minneapolis and making more then double what they made at KTAL.

Hey, I just have an idea. KTAL should have Michelle and Sherri Warren as co-anchors. They could rebrand as the Train Wreak station.

At 2:54 PM, July 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That would be like having Whitney Houston and Anna Nichole Smith as co-anchors.

Based on these comments, I watched 6 tonight for the first time in...I Couldn't tell you. I agree, the set, graphics and music are excellent. The new male anchor seems solid. Todd is pleasant, completely non-offensive and apparently consistent as a forecaster. I assume that because there's no complaining about him.
But that female anchor is utterly unwatchable. What are they thinking? Seriously, she may be the worst I've ever seen, when factoring in the idea that she evidently has been doing this for some time. Could she be more terrible?

MeeShell used to do a pretty decent job when she first appeared on Shreveport TV on KSLA. But something has happened over the years to cause her to stretch out and over-enunciate words, syllables, etc. The long pauses or broken speech rythym. It's as if she got bad voice & diction lessons somewhere. What happened? I cringe when I land on the newscast and can't find the remote fast enough.

At 10:43 AM, July 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with previous comments that KTAL needs to do a major overhaul of their on-air. The new set and graphics are the best in this market now, but their on-air "talent" is still the worst in this market. This talent issue is serious enough to prevent them from becoming #1 in this market. @12:13 wrote "keep Brandon, Brian, Nick, Todd, and Patrick and get rid of everyone else." I fully agree with that recommendation. Either bring in some new people from other markets, or see if any of these former local broadcasters would be interested in working there like others have suggested. After what I saw last weekend KTAL also needs to get rid of the entire weekend crew. Both on-air and PA's. The weekend shows were a hot mess and that entire crew needs to go.

At 3:33 PM, July 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Perhaps the saddest thing of all is that both were fairly good at one time at tv newsreading. Shari had a lot going for her and if she had taken some advice from a couple TV consultants, she would've gone quite far. Instead she settled for less and started believing in the "big-fish/little pond" syndrome. That and other issues of course, but that's the tragedy. So much potential and yet a crash & burn. I see another such circumstance in the not-too-distant-future.

At 3:40 PM, July 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's terrible. Ture but terrible. You know they would sweep the Train Wreck Awards every year if that really happened.

Honestly now, 6 does need to clean house. Talent wise they' are terrible, but looks wise they are the best thing going right now. Bring in some new faces who can actual report and read prompter will put them over the top. If management is not seriously considering this, then they should be replaced to.

At 3:52 PM, July 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@11:05 I would agree with you prior to this new set but somethings changed with the AM crew. They seem a bit more together although the blonde reporter still needs work. All in all with less than a week under their belts i like what i see. Plus some of these folks actually look better to me in HD.

At 4:06 PM, July 03, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, you all have already said what I am thinking. My only complains are their on-air and their content. If 6 wants to advance they need to replace several people. They also need to improve their content on what they cover and how they cover it. They need to start covering these big news stories with either live coverage, or get a crew on scene to make a package. Both 3 and 12 lead in live coverage. Those are the only two things left for them to work on. Other then that 6 looks amazing.

Onair changes coming. Theres a new sports anchor in place of Gavin who will start in a few weeks, hired a new reporter Alese Underwood to start sometime next week and theyve posted or will be posting a morning coanchor position online.

Where does KTAL post their job openings? They haven't post job openings on arklatexhomepage.com in a long time. I am looking at the Nexstar website right now and there are no jobs posted for KTAL. If they don't use either of those sites then where are they posted?

At 9:46 AM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here's something significant: I'm on TVJobs.com right now (yes, I work in TV), and 4:27 is right. 6 does have a morning co-anchor. But, they ALSO have a 10pm co-anchor opening posted! Does that mean Mee-shell is getting pulled? Or could it be Nick?

C'mon insiders (4:27, I'm looking at you!). Can someone clarify what's going on in there?

At 10:19 AM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find it strange that KTAL does not post their job openings on their own webpage, or their company website. This must be a Nexstar thing because stations owned by other companies always post jobs on their own website, or provide a link directing you to it.

At 10:42 AM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

From what we've heard Michele is moving to dayside and only coanchoring the 5 and 6 with Nick. This won't happen for a little bit (obviously need to fill position first) but the new person would report then coanchor at 10.

At 10:46 AM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Your right about that. I've looked at station websites all over the country and all of them, except for Nexstar owned stations, post jobs on both the station and corporate websites. Now if it's a network owned station you are redirected to the network jobs link. Of course there is always tvjobs.com.

At 11:25 AM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Glad to hear they are already working on those on-air changes. Don't stop there, keep going. On-air, content, and that weekend crew are KTAL's biggest problems left.

At 4:22 PM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thought I'd check the KTAL.com website and found it's arklatexhomepage.com It has to be one of the most confusing websites for a TV station that I have ever seen. You wouldn't know it has anything to do with KTAL 6 except for stumbling across some pages & newslinks. What an EFFing MESS!! There's no branding / identity reinforcement of the station and I had trouble navigating it. Who cam up with this piece of shit website? Are they serious?

At 5:42 PM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@4:22 is right. The KTAL website is a unfriendly mess with totally useless information. It's a company wide one size fits all concept. Nexstar had all their stations change over to the same website format about a year or two ago. The only thing different is the downtown skyline at the top of the main page. The name of the website has been arklatexhomepage.com since 2002 or 2003. Blake Russell came up with that name before he left when he was promoted to VP&GM in Fayetteville, and then again to corporate in Irving. Every Nexstar stations has a different name like arklatexhomepage. Thank god for Google or no one could find these stations.

Ok, who screwed up between Judge Judy and the 5:00 today? One second I'm looking at the back an unoccupied set, then set in black for almost two minutes.

Ditto on the arklatexhomepage. What a joke! Every TV station has a url with the call letters. This is such a no brainer. Whomever came up with this arklatexhomepage.com is clueless about brand integration and collateralization of media. It may sell adspace but does nothing for crosspromoting the station. It looks messy and amateurish.

That's Nexstar for you. And just think, EVERY Nexstar station has the same jacked up website.

At 7:41 PM, July 04, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The must justify it by saving on costs if they're all the same. Funny thing is that if they had some webmedia folks who had a clue about broadcast, they'd come up with something more elegant that would not only attract web-ad eyeballs but increase value-added to the station broadcast ops as well. They're missing the boat big-time by only focusing on a fixed revenue stream.

Miracles do happen. KTAL is living proof of it. I was on vacation for two weeks and came back to a new and much improved KTAL. The new look is perfect which is something I never thought I would say about KTAL. Just keep working on those anchors and reporters.

At 11:18 AM, July 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This may be off-topic but does anyone else think KTBS's coverage of the fireworks last night was awful? The signal was horrible, cameras out of focus or improperly exposed, the switching was done by a drunk-monkey and so were some of the camera shots.
We howled when they went to a highly pixelated traffic-cam shot. Where was the high-def signals they so proudly promote. Seems rule #1 is if you have an event where "oohs & ahhs" are on the menu, you better deliver good images. The look and switching sucked a big one!

At 11:42 AM, July 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's nothing new. KTBS's coverage is like that every year. The audio with the live bands was the worst.

Getting back to KTAL. Does anyone know if they plan on any more on-air changes, other then three positions disclosed in previous comments?

At 12:08 PM, July 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That Sherri Tally idea is a good one, but KTAL wouldn't cut loose with enough money to get her back into broadcasting. Sherri was very happy where was the last time I saw her. The other former broadcasters have moved on and are not interested in getting back in the business. They just need to bring in some new faces from outside the area.

I am surprised but glad KTAL is going back to a co-anchor format for the morning show. Several years ago, KTAL used to have co-anchors for the morning show, the 5, 6, and 10, and the weekend show. It worked out really well especially during the two hour morning show. The show moved along much quicker and had more variety with two anchors then just having one main anchor reading for two hours. It also helped out tremendously when one of them would call in sick, or was out on assignment or vacation.

Looking good there KTAL. So when are these new on-air people starting? Any idea if anyone else is about to leave?

the weekend talent needs some help badly.

At 7:30 AM, July 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is being polite. They are terrible and entire weekend on-air and crew needs to go.

At 10:59 AM, July 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I watched the morning show today, and I'm not inclined to be as critical as some of these commenters.
I think Leslie is attractive, and admittedly she needs to build confidence on-air. Give her a year and she might be pretty good. Having a co-anchor might be really beneficial for her.
She seems to fit the morning show mold. Given some time to grow, I think she's going to be okay and ultimately KTAL will lose her to a better opportunity.

At 12:00 PM, July 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@10:59 Leslie is cute and all, but this is not here first on-air job. She has previous on-air experience and has been in this position for eight months so she should be more comfortable on air then what she is.
Of course KTAL will loose Lesley because her husband is in the military and subject to transfer every two to four years like Jenna Zibton before her was.

Why didn't KTAL sell all their local avals in network this past weekend? There was a lot of promo fill. Are sales down and you just don't have enough spots to place, or what?

At 5:51 PM, July 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know about that, but I have noticed KTAL is running a lot more promos then they used to.

At 7:42 PM, July 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shouldn't be too surprised. They have something to promote for a change (better HD broadcast, new look) Summer ratings are about to get started so it makes sense to ramp up an on-air image campaign.
Can't attribute the increase in promos to be unsold avails only. Although summer is typically a slower adsales cycle. Just wait until Back-to-School starts kicking in in about 4 weeks.

At 8:33 PM, July 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Could be, but they started running noticeably more promos and psa's instead of paid spots two or three weeks before the new set and improvements were un-vailed.

At 8:49 PM, July 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Evidently something is going on over there. Some of their AE's have been sniffing around my station.

At 12:12 PM, July 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I believe they're down a GSM and the new GM has been in place for what 2 months or so? Given that the new HD signal and set was a major, major undertaking for them, you can appreciate how much distraction that had to have been. I would suspect that the new GM will be "adjusting" things and ramp up a newer sales staff. Just my guess. You can probably figure that those AE's who were there as part of the former GM's staff may need to find other opportunities. But if they're looking at KTBS, it shows how little they know.

At 5:43 PM, July 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think you got it right @12:12. Chris is gone as GSM so the AE's are looking around. Mark came in as the new VP&GM in February. Gavin is gone as sports reporter. The new reporter did not make it past her 90 day probation, and another reporter was given notice. Sounds like typical new management restructuring to me.

At 6:43 PM, July 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Which reporter got let go? Was it the white chick with the teeny-bopper voice?

At 10:13 PM, July 11, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, that the one.

At 11:35 AM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

From what I see, KTAL should "lighten up" their reporter line up. Not knocking it but demographically speaking they need to mix up their line up a bit.

More changes are coming. Every time we get new management we have changes.

At 12:53 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with 11:35 AM, and KTAL has too many folks without much experience too. I know Shreveport isn't Dallas but it's not exactly a beginners market either.

At 2:15 PM, July 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, it is a beginners market here now. Just check out the on-air bios at all three stations.

Oh no, you are right. Shawn really has become a chunky monkey. He was adorable when he was at KTAL. How disappointing. It's just like when I went to my 10 year high school reunion and found the cutest boy in our class, that all us girls were in love with, looks like he is 68 not 28.

I don't think anybody in the building really knows what's going on. Not even management as I betcha they're deferring all decisions to corporate so as to not suffer fallout if the choices don't work out. Just a hunch.

At 5:39 PM, July 16, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So in other words Blake Russell, and one or two others at corporate, are making all the decisions, right?

At 8:58 AM, July 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Probably. Nexstar has a history of micromanaging from afar.

At 10:18 PM, July 17, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gotta say this: the newscasts are running a heckuva lot tighter than ever before. Wonder if they've got a new attitude going at the hub?

At 6:18 AM, July 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@10:18 Yes, the weekday newscast are noticeably tighter, but that is not the case with the weekend newscasts. KTAL's newscasts are run out of the studio in Shreveport, not the hub Little Rock. The only thing KTAL shares with the hub is master control, and the same set and graphics package which are identical to KARK's. Monroe also got the same set and graphics package.

At 11:16 AM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

July 2012 is the one year anniversary of KTAL's master control being moved to the hub at KARK in Little Rock. Judging from the job openings posted over the past year, master control at the hub is having a higher then average turnover.

At 11:51 AM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Probably like working as an under-trained air-traffic controller at minimum wage is a guess as to why.

At 1:10 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No doubt 11:51. Low pay, crappy work environment, and having 2 people running 8 stations at one time. Sound like a great place to work. NOT!

At 4:46 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wow, it's been a year already? I used to work at a hub station years ago and it was not a good situation. It's not surprising KARK is having a high turnover in master control. It was the same way at my old hub station. MCO's have enough pressure dealing with one station, but when you have a hub where one or two MCO's is doing the jobs eight MCO's used to do, the pressure is magnified.

At 4:54 PM, July 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You'd think technology would be such that it would be a simple matter of logging traffic orders, linking with files and making sure nothing chokes. Guess all this fancy high-tech stuff only works at NAB and not in real life.

At 6:16 PM, July 21, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why does KTAL run the weather crawl during their newscast? It's distracting and totally unnecessary. That weather will be covered during the forecast in the B block, and if it's severe enough other news gets bumped for weather coverage. None of the stations in any of the other markets I've worked in do this.

At 1:20 PM, July 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The crawl is annoying as hell, hard to read and distracting. Looks cheap and like an afterthought. Get rid of it.

At 7:16 PM, July 22, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The crawl reminds me of early cable access channel graphics done by a Commodore Computer. Are there any graphics people working at this station?

At 9:56 AM, July 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

When I was in Shreveport last week I noticed 6 and 12 run the weather bug and weather crawl during the newscasts. That is something new we didn't do when I was there. None of the stations in my current market do that, and we have just as severe, if not more severe weather as Shreveport. I agree with the previous comments about 6's crawl being distracting, hard to read, and very cheap looking.

At 10:50 AM, July 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For some reason our local TV stations have it in their head that we need to see oversized weather-radar images & crawls whenever some rain is falling somewhere in the 100 mile radius of Shreveport. I guess this is something consultants have dreamed up and sold to management as vital. It is a bullshit distraction and appears amateurish-looking as if to promote their "weather-technology" and nothing else. If we have an impending storm warning... pop it in but enough of this WEATHER SPLOTCH with incessant crawls. It looks like a bug smashed on a windshield.

Thank you! I am glad to know someone else thinks the same thing.
