Nexstar Hires Veteran Sportscaster
Source: KARK
Veteran sportscaster Mike Irwin has joined
the Razorback Nation sports team.
In 1976, Irwin became the first
television sports reporter to cover Razorback athletics on a daily basis
from Northwest Arkansas. Over the past 37 years
his name has become synonymous with cutting edge reporting and expert
analysis of Hog athletics.
KARK, KNWA, KFTA & KARZ are proud to welcome him aboard.
"I have admired the Razorback Nation
concept for quite some time," Irwin said. "If you do what I do for a
living why would you not want to be a part of the largest television
sports staff in Arkansas, one that is totally focused
on bringing the very best coverage to Razorback fans? I am fired up to
be a part of this team."

Mike Irwin going to work for the competition is sure to shake things up a bit in the Ft.Smith and Fayetteville Market. Mr. Van Comer may come to regret firing Mike Irwin.
Your right, and I think he is already regretting it.
Nice hire. It will be interesting to see if KARK hires a replacement for Kerri Oharra.
Irwin is a jerk
KARK still can't seem to get an HD picture out of Fayetteville. Having to use the pillars on every shot of the Hog Nation report.
Fayetteville is not alone. It's the same with the video out of Shreveport too.
So what, who cares about this?
THV needs to get the new weather girl's bio on their webpage. She is quite the water cooler talk because she is good at her job (and hot).
Here's some Mike Irwin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5PwusuxCAc
The new THV weather girl is homely and pudgy. I've certainly never heard anyone say she's hot. She stumbles through the weather and has no idea how to say half the cities/counties. We laughed listening to her try to say El Dorado. Bad hire, THV.
was watching ktal the other night and veteran anchor meeshell said el dorado wrong. I had never laughed and screamed at the tv so loud.
Not sure why some are beating up the new THV weather person. I like watching her she does a good job.... the pronunciation of certain areas will come with time. I still have trouble with pronouncing many of the towns.
Whoever on this board thinks all the anchors should be 25 year old waif models needs a does of reality.
and yes I am a viewer.
I don't work nor have I ever worked in TV or Radio.
Whoever said the new weathergirl is homely needs to have their eyes checked. She is one of the prettiest gals in the market. Get a life. And no, I don't even know her.
Arkansas has their own ways of pronouncing El Dorado, Monticello & Stuttgart - not to mention Desha, Ouachita & Nevada counties.
Can't blame Sarah for not having the hillbilly thing down just yet. Give her time. I think she'll be ok, and she's not too bad on the eyes.
Pretty, no. But she's average. I wish they wouldn't have hired another plain Jane.
I really like the new weather gal on KTHV - very cute and energetic. Great hire. The jury is still out on Mike Irwin. He had a dated air about him on camera tonight. Completely agree that KARK cannot seem to get a decent signal much less HD from NWA - just terrible. And KTHV still can't seem to light the weather garden properly. They at least got new windows a while back, but left the natural trim that is now appears to be black with mold on camera. Ugh.
doesnt the no hd from KNWA stem from they themselves are not HD?
9:04 you are correct.
I simply do not understand how TV stations decide what to report. A local strip club was broken into and $11K was stolen and not one word was mentioned on any of the local stations to my knowledge. If it weren't for the Ar. Dem/Gaz it would have went unreported. Maybe the stations need to read the paper before doing their news.
At 12:48 -- KATV had that story in their 5 o'clock. But yeah, not sure about the other stations.
If this is that dude that has reported from Omaha the past couple of days, then I am very disappointed. He was so bland and boring I caught myself yawning.
The guy is the most experienced sports reporter in the state.
Irwin needs a newspaper gig. Never liked him on KFSM. Watched 40/29 for sports and still do.
Does Irwin wear a wig?
Why in the world would you watch 40/29 for sports? KFSM or KNWA dominate that area.
yes he does wear a wig and yes he would be better at the newspaper. his on-air is so bland and boring. Almost monotone.
Irwin IS experienced. Noone has been so boring for so long.
Good thing you don't make the calls on what talent gets on the air. I think adding Mike was a great idea. Just curious, are you in Little Rock market or Ft. Smith?
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
I live in Conway and watch the sportscasts and listen to sportstalk radio. Bottom line, I don't trust anything that comes out of the NWA sports media (Bo, Ric, Peters, Alter, Henry, Dawson, etc.). They are nothing but a bunch of propoganda pushers working on behalf of the UA. Nothing fair, balanced, unbiased or objective. Anything to keep those free tickets and parking passes. I wish KARK would dump the Razorback Nation segment and produce their own in Little Rock. Don't let the Gus Bus run over you.
I would love to see a LR station get behind the ASU sports program and promote it. The UA still refuses to play them in any sport. That says a lot about ASU being a contender that UA fears.
All Razorbacks for local sports is a bad idea for Little Rock. There are too many other teams and their alumni in this area.

Have ASU sell out some home games and than maybe they will get more coverage
Ms. Allyson Courtney,
The pipes were not "busted", they burst.
Thanks,
The Grammar Police
Dear Grammar Police,
Allyson does not write her stories. She comes in about 5 minutes before it's time to work, and reads what was written for her. That is all she is paid to do. Blame her producer.
10:17, are you providing commentary on the producer or Allyson?
Neither 4:33, just calling a spade a spade.
Can't say as I disagree with 10:17's comment, but given the time of his/her follow up (4:46?), I'm calling crosstown rivalry.
That said, the truth is the truth, and we don't like to talk about those things, but it's not like she is the only anchor in town who gets that kind of a deal.
Ms. Jessica Dean,
The pipe was not "busted", it burst. Please follow the example of the displaced guy interviewed on the street with only two teeth. He said the pipe "burst".
Thanks,
The Grammar Police
4:43, here. Not a crosstown rival, but I do know local anchors. And I hate to "burst" a bubble," but they don't all just show up 5 minutes before air, read the news, and collect big salaries. As 4:46 said, just calling a spade a spade."
Nope, not all of them.
The producer shouldn't have written it that way and the anchor should care enough about the product to pre-read her scripts before going on statewide television. The anchor is the final guardian.
The grammar error I hate, and they all make it all the time, is an agreement error. "Everyone loses their keys from time to time." It drives me wild. Everyone is singular; therefore, it should read, everyone loses his keys from time to time. For me it is just as bad as burst vs bust. Ignorant. Thanks for letting me vent before I burst a blood vessel!
Christina M. said "busted" last night too.
Well then, I guess you just busted ole Christine. Who wants to step up and get busted next by the Grammar Police?
We don't go for no fancy book learnin round these parts.
Most TV stations need to hire a print journalist to ensure that the teleprompter copy is written correctly. Secondly, the "anchor" should read the copy before going on air. Also, some "anchors" need to work on pronouncing the names of some cities in Arkansas.

Well, again I say the stations should hire a print journalist to write their scripts. If I were on-air talent, I would be pissed at someone that wrote incorrectly for me.
In today's world, it's always someone else's fault!
KTHV ain't gonna hire no print journalist to catch grammar errors. Them folks can't afford themselves an employee to catch other folks mistakes y'all.
It seems like it's KATV and KARK getting called out for bad grammar. They should invest in grammar police.
Charles Crowson NEVER made grammar errors, never.
You can't use "invest" and KARK in the same sentence.
THV, don't think that you get off the hook so easily. Whoever does your graphics during the newscasts needs to use a spelling checker. Texas is not spelled T-e-x-a-s-e, as was displayed last week.
Are the May numbers out yet?
Yes they are but apparently you won't see much about them on here. Arkansas business has an article about it today. Let's just say unless you work at 7 you are not having a good day.
I was told they were flat across the board for everyone. No real changes.
You were told wrong.
You were told very wrong.
Does anyone think that KATV is winning sweeps because they were able to attract Nick and Kenny?
Sure doesn't hurt apparently.
Channel 7 is a great legacy station. It was having issues and it didn't take a genious to figure it out. It's still not what it used to be but it is improving and the viewers have noticed.
I love the comments saying the stations need to hire more print journalists. please. my husband and I get a good laugh catching all the grammatical errors in the dem-gaz every morning. what a joke.
They still print newspapers??

I agree. If it doesn't come over the scanner or some viewer doesn't call the newsroom, the story will not be covered. What do they do with their time. Also, distorted audio from reporters in the field. It's like the reporters are having to do their own camera/audio work themselves with little or no training. Sad, but hey, the stations have to make money some way.
Do you mean a shooting, car wreck or big fire could be missed by someone in the newsroom not listening to the scanner?
I noticed KARK finally changed "DOPPLAR" to Doppler on their radar banner. That ran me crazy.
Gotta be tough being a Weather Authority & also being able to spell.
Was the KARK Doppler error on television or their website?
We help military Veterans find companies hiring veterans. We understand why it is valuable to hire a vet because we are one as well.
