Pickey on the Way out at KNWA/KFTA

This from a tipster: Scott Pickey, News Director for KNWA (NBC) and KFTA (Fox) and parent company Nexstar Broadcasting, Inc., have parted ways. Pickey will most likely stay until the end of the year. No word on who will assume is duties.

Scott was a jerk when I worked with him years ago! Has he changed?

At 9:26 AM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No he hasn't changed. He plays favorites among everyone in the newsroom. If your not someone he likes, your work experience sucks. I'm sure few will be actually sorry that he is leaving.

At 10:39 AM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It actually is sad that he's leaving. Everyone in the newsroom loves him. They go out drinking with him. Can't say that about other ND's in town.

At 11:03 AM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say everyone in the newsroom loves him. I know of many who celebrated the news. Just because someone is fun to go out drinking with does not mean they are someone you want to work with or for. Drinking skills and friendship skills do not translate to management skills and intelligent news judgement.

Pickey was the worst person I ever encountered in news. He's a lethal combination of evil and stupid. I'm sure his little posse at the station are heartbroken, but the vast majority of the newsroom is elated.

I wonder if it'll take him another year and a half to find a job, or if his buddy Blake will get him into corporate like he got him that job.

At 1:37 PM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Obviously there are people who like him a lot and those who don't and no longer work for the station. I for one am very sad to see Scott go. He worked hard to make us better at our jobs and some don't like or can't take that approach. It worked for many of us and we are better for it. Scott will land on his feet. Say what you will, but there are a lot of people there who like and respect him.

At 3:13 PM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There are people who "like" Scott only because he has protected thier lazy asses in the past, but that'll all change now and some are scared. No one really "likes" him, some have just had alterior motivations in the past to keep him on their good side. Let's wait and see if any of Scott's drinking buddies, I mean employees, keep in touch once he's out the door. Not a chance.

At 3:18 PM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If only the lazy people like Scott, then there are tons us here. Yeah right, you're just pissed because you got run off. We dind't want you here anyway, no talent ass clown.

I worked for him years ago. He was awful. I totally agree with the above poster that decribed him as a 'lethal combination of evil and stupid'. Sounds to me like he hasn't changed.

At 7:20 PM, November 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I didn't work for him very long, but he never gave me too much grief. I just thought he was young and inexperienced, but a nice enough guy. Not much of a news director, with a lot to learn...but you could say that about a lot of people in the news business. I hope he finds himself another job in the industry and continues to learn.

Judging from the grammar some of you KNWAers use, he should have kicked a lot more butt over there.

I never worked for Scott, but have known him for years. He has worked (and managed) good shops and is a top notch guy.

Scott is a great guy. I hope he finds something soon.

Can I have his office?

At 11:16 PM, November 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Monday- Scott was a great guy.

Tuesday- Scott would come in with his evil wee-man looking eyes and yell and cuss at everyone he saw. He did this for three hours and then stopped and acted like none of it happened.

Wednesday-Scott would come in and tell jokes for a while, then something would happen causing him to snap.
The rest of the day he degraded employees and tried to find ways to make their life miserable.

(That pattern applies to almost any week while I worked at KNWA)

Scott Pickey may be bipolar

Why would you want history's most inept news director kept around during sweeps? Hell, it's a shot in the arm for KNWA that the yuppie bastard got terminated when he did.

But, really... KNWA shouldn't "believe" in sweeps, not subscribing to neilsen and all. What a load.

At 5:59 PM, November 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As bad as Scott Pickey is reported to be, he's nowhere near the legendary Al Sandubrae. The former KARK ND was truly evil incarnate.

Al was evil incarnate? Hey, not so fast...oh, by the way, has anyone seen my teeth? They must have slipped out again during that last story....love, Craig.

Yes, Cannon was pretty spectacular for evil behavior as a News Director. He felt so secure in his job that he thought he could act any way he wanted. He shaped up a bit when KHBS was purchased.

I agree Craig tops it on Most Evil News Director. He could rage better than anyone. It was truely a sight to see or hear, which ever came first.

At 8:49 PM, November 08, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then it's agreed, Craig Cannon (though not alone) is officially the "most evil" NWA news director of all time, with a run off scheduled against LR's "most evil" for the state title.

Craig WILL need new teeth for this bout...

At 8:51 PM, November 08, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I support the run off for the state title. I also agree that there are plenty of bad ones in nwa, but Cannon takes it on evil. Who would run as Little Rock's candidate?

At 9:57 PM, November 08, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least Craig has some semblance on news. Pickey did crap at his tenure at KNWA that made it seemed like he wouldn't know a story if it crossed the street to spit in his face.

Everyone loves Scott.

.....Except for the entire newsroom, most of the reporters, all of the anchors, all of the weather people, most of the sports team, and all of the sales team.

That's what happens when you treat people like shit. They don't like you and they won't work hard for you.

And that's why Scott has been fired at every job he's ever had. Maybe it's time to change your motivational tactics Scott. Doesn't look like they're working

At 12:39 PM, November 12, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, try by not making people so afraid they will lose their job they are brought to tears.....or by when asked a question of how you want something done, answering directly instead of "do what you think is right"....or when you repeatedly tell someone working under you something, KEEP YOUR WORD! I would suggest taking a managment class. Learn some people skills. Hopefully you'll learn how to effectively manage people in a manner that doesn't degrade them or make them feel like inferior idiots.

He basically either fired the majority of the WECT staff or made their lives so miserable that they would quit when he was EP there. Go screw, Scott, and wipe your ass with your bow tie while you're at it.

it's not a problem if your buddies with a GM who himself has no experience in television. So, Scott is showing WWAY's GM the ropes and as the GM's one and only friend in the building, Scott's gig is pretty much guaranteed. WWAY has lost 2 anchors, at least 6 reporters and a whole bunch of respect in just the past 3 months.

Can anyone fill in the blanks here or add any missing stations Scott has had. Is it me or is this alot of station jumping even in a business known for moving around. Except usually its voluntary and not forced like seems to be the case with this guy. To say there is alot of concerning info on him overall is an understatement.

WWAY-2010-Wilimington, NC

KDBC-August 2008-El Paso, TX

KNWA-March 2006 - Fayetteville, AR
Fired October 2007 (Contract not renewed, was supposed to stay on until end of year)

WHNT-May 2005-Huntsville, AL
Hired as interim ND and never hired on full time, left after 10 months

WDSU - New Orleans, LA

News 10 Now - Syracuse, NY

WRAL - Raleigh, NC

That's EXACTLY what he did at WECT as well. He got chummy with Ron Becker, the GM at the time (who wasn't much better than Scott) and skated his way through. I don't know if he left of his own accord or got let go, but I knew when he got to WWAY that staff would drop like flies. My condolences to all of you there. The comments about his womanizing could quite possibly be true. Allegedly that was going on at WECT as well. Someone at WWAY will eventually call him out on it and he'll be history there as well if it's that's the case. Even Babs knew this guy was a creep.

An update: just a week ago Scott had a "Medical Scare," where he "passed out in his office for about 30 seconds." Did he see a doctor? NO! He went out drinking and partying with the Azalea Festival people! Not too much of a medical scare, it seems. This guy would fake a medical condition to get off work a couple of hours early for a night of drinking, Scott is THE consummate professional!

At 12:33 PM, February 01, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

But Scott's version is...
"For the record last Friday I had a coughing spell. I was on the tail end of a cold. And yes indeedy I passed out in my office for a second. It was during our afternoon meeting so I scared about half a dozen people when it happened."

He probably tied his stupid bow tie too tight. You sound like an insider. What's the vibe over there right now? I'm curious. What an ass that he's actually reporting on what the other media outlets in Wilmington are doing right now. I love the fact that people were smashing his "editorial" regarding Commissioner Thompson. Dangerous territory when you start inserting yourself into the news. I bet Cacky is kicking herself for taking that job.

Working in the industry as a ND in a "Top 50" market and not knowing Mr. Pickey personally, there seems to be alot of accusations pertaining to his personal life and certain aspects of his porfessional demeanor. I question how much of that can be substantiated? Or how much is borne of bitterness and jealousy? With that said, from a purely professional standpoint, concerns certainly arise. During a career that has taken him through what appears to be double digit stations in certain capacities including ND, a few questions arise. 1)Why so many stations in such a short timeframe? 2)Why end up at a station that ranks 134th? Most NDs aspire to guide their career to bigger markets, not the opposite direction. 3)Cleary something is awry in that for that much experince he is still a ND and not a GM. That is what we all strive for. This is just my two cents anyway. Also, in doing some research, there does seem to be some validity to certain claims. The most egregious is that noone in his position should ever insert themselves into a story or try and make themselves the story (especially trying use smoke and mirrors by calling it an editorial). This does seem to be a trend with Mr. Pickey and WWAY. There is also the matter of what seems to be, under his watch, reporting on the actions of competing stations in the market. That is just something that a professionally run station just does not do. Leave that to other media outlets. Ultimately though, this falls on the desk of the GM who needs to do a better job of "institutional control". Trust me, this problem is not something isolated to WWAY or someone like Mr. Pickey. However, that doesnt excuse the lack of professionalism and doing ones job with the proper morals and ethics.

For the poster above, I'll try to address your questions:

1. Why so many stations? Easy...he wears out his welcome at every station he's worked at lightning speed. At first, he was well liked at WECT, then he showed his true colors and he became hated. He made a lot of people's lives miserable there. He left WECT to go to WRAL. He lasted a year. I heard through a reliable source that on the last day of his contract, they escorted him out of the building by security.

2. Why end up at a 134th station? Because he's a big fish in a small pond. He's a bully and can countinue with his rogue style of EP'ing by threating and getting rid of his staff. Look at the turnover rate at WWAY in the last year. Coincidence? Not likely. And from reading other posts, it seems like the GM, who apparently does not have any television experience prior to WWAY, has befriended him, giving Scott a free pass. You eluded to posters here being jealous and bitter. Jealous? No....Bitter? Absolutely. The man is a creep....he has made a lot of peoples lives miserable, no two words about it. If it walks like a duck...etc, etc...

3. Why isn't he a GM? In my opinion...not in his blood. Scott is a newshound and a rabblerouser. You said it yourself regarding inerting himself into the news. Have you seen his smarmy comments to people who criticize the station on their website? "Thanks for watching..."...bla bla bla. He likes sensationalsim and he likes the competition. I remember a story he did where they had an unloaded handgun brought to a day care to see what would happen if a child found it and what they would do with it. That one really pissed off the community.

Anyway, at the end of the day, he's at WWAY probably until he decides to leave. The sensationalism will continue, the calling out of other media outlets, and the revloving door of anchors and staff. Being in a 134th market, the newsstaff probably barely make enough money to pay rent and bills. The last thing they need is to have a monolith like Scott making their jobs a living hell. My heart goes out to them. Hope this answers some of your questions.

Yes! They are VERY miserable over there at WWAY!!!

CONCORD, NC (WWAY) -- WWAY NewsChannel 3 won eight awards at the Radio Television Digital News Association of the Carolinas annual convention Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, including Best Newscast in the Carolinas. WWAY won top honors in six categories. The two silver awards came in categories in which the station won top awards.

"I'm really proud of our team," WWAY News Director Scott Pickey said. "They work very hard each and every day to bring our viewers the best newscast possible. It's very humbling for our peers to honor us with this award."

In addition to Best Newscast, WWAY also won Best Special Report for its coverage of a deadly line of thunderstorms and tornadoes that swept across the state on April 16.

Sportcaster John Rendleman was one of the day's biggest winners. His story about a girl with cerebral palsy who is a member of her high school track team won Best Sports Reporting. He also won Best Sports Special for the "Coach's Corner," which airs Sundays at 6 p.m. on WWAY. The silver award in the Sports Special category went to John, Trot Nixon, Jesse Jones and the rest of the WWAY sports team for the "5th Quarter," our weekly, Friday night high school football highlight show.

Weekend anchor and reporter Ramon Herrera adds Best Investigative reporter to his resume. Ramon won the top prize for his coverage last summer of the investigation into a state trooper in New Hanover County accused by a Raleigh attorney and his wife of misconduct. Ramon's reporting helped uncover both sides of the story, which eventually led to the trooper being cleared of the allegations.

WWAY swept the Best Documentary category. "Pirates of the Carolinas: Storm at Sea," produced and hosted by WWAY StormTrack 3 Chief Meteorologist Jerry Jackson, won first place. Our annual hurricane season special explored the intertwined history of pirates and hurricanes along the North Carolina coast. The silver award in the documentary category went to WWAY's coverage of the USS Gravely Commissioning, produced and hosted by Kevin Wuzzardo.

WWAY won more best in category awards than any other single station in RTDNAC's Division II, which includes stations in the Carolinas' smaller markets including Wilmington, Greenville/New Bern, Florence/Myrtle Beach and Charleston.

Dear Potential Employer:

You have come across a blog that began more than eight years ago when I left KNWA. The reason I left is simple; a new GM was named and he wanted to hire his own News Director.

Many have felt compelled to leave their thoughts on this page. Comments are not edited or overseen by the blogger so anything can be posted by anyone anonymously.

Most of what's posted simply isn't true. As for the big picture, I have high expectations at any station I work at and sometimes that rubs people the wrong way if they don't meet those expectations.

Honestly, most of what's on here is libelous. The second half of the comments were mostly written by an ex-boyfriend of a girl I was dating at the time. He thought it would be fun to vent here.

I have asked the blogger who runs the page to delete it - or at least delete the comments, but he refuses. Short of a court order, there's not much I can do except respond to the allegations posted.

If you have any questions or concerns about what's posted here, all I ask is that YOU ask. I'll be glad to answer any of these anonymous claims anytime.

Scott,

You made my life miserable when I worked for you. I was a solid reporter and you treated me horribly. You made me second guess myself and it affected me for a long time. Looking back now, I see that it was because of your youth and inexperience - and insecurity with yourself. A good manager - and newsman - would have done things so much differently. I have gone on to great success - professionally and personally, with numerous journalism accolades including multiple Emmy awards.

I hope you've grown up and changed your act. Newsrooms need a man or woman to lead - not a spoiled brat of a boy.

I wish you the best of luck in your future.
