looks like larry has finally decided to make a move and hire this guy right when the book starts so when the ratings go down he can point the finger at someone else.

we all think your doing a great job larry... well, i'm sure someone does... no? well, at least we have a news director. maybe he can turn this cluster-f**k in the right direction.

They all come full-circle, sooner or later.

I worked with Chuck Maulden at KARK when I was a reporter and Chuck was a news photographer. To a reporter, having Chuck shoot our stories was like having a photographer, field producer and director all in one. Although I have been out of the TV news business for years, as a friend I have followed Chuck's career from photographer, to chief photographer and into management in a major market. I would be willing to bet the farm that those people working at KTHV who have worked with Chuck at KARK will be unanimous in their praise and respect for their new News Director. If given the chance by his new management, Chuck will succeed to the point where the other TV News Directors in the market will begin to worry.

no... thank god.

Good deal for THV and Little Rock. I have to wonder though since KSDK is also Gannette owned, did they really search far and wide for a replacement for Raines or just within the Gannette organization so as to keep the same Gannette ideals? I guess time and ratings will tell.

Nice to see another ASU grad taking the reigns of a Little Rock station.

Nice move on the part of THV.

Chuck will work out nicely. THV looked at a couple of other option including an option from KARK who approached THV management about the job, a former KATV N.D., and a few others outside of the station. Being from Gannett and wanting to move closer to family, it made sense to hire Chuck. Larry wanted to hire an individual he worked with from S.C. who is working at a public TV station in Chicago. I'm sure corporate had a lot to do with the hiring as well.

THV is CURRENTLY in the toilet, and they will REMAIN in the toilet until they get rid of Larry AudASS.

i hear a lot about all the wrong stuff at thv. are there any good people over there?

Chuck Maulden is one of the finest people I've had the pleasure to work with in this business. He's a man of great integrity and character. He will do a fine job if Audas will butt out. Problem is, it's going to take Chuck some time to rebuild all that Audas has managed to destroy in the last 3 months. I've worked in the TV business for 20-plus years and morale at THV is the lowest I've ever seen, thanks to Audas. Gannett made a great decision hiring Chuck -- they should make another great decision and send Audas packing.

Who from KATV and KARK talked to THV?

Well said, 8:35. Fire Audass and bring in a GM that knows what in And, please, get a new set and fix damn lighting.

the lighting would be fine if the geniuses in charge of running them would turn on the right ones.

At 12:29 AM, October 13, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought they might promote from within. Save themselves some money, and Larry would still be running the show, which is what he apparently likes. Nobody there wanted the job? And why hire a new ND now, right before the Nov. book?

At 12:56 AM, October 13, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To have a new technical crew would not hurt them either.

I would almost get back into local news and move back to Little Rock to work in a Chuck Maulden newsroom. (Almost!) KTHV is lucky to have him. Intelligence, integrity, news judgment, and he holds each shot for 10 seconds. The finest news photographer I ever worked with, period.

At 9:17 AM, October 13, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's not that "nobody there wanted the job" it was that NO one was qualified to unify the newsroom as one team. One exec producer is very brash and hard to get along with, the other may be a little to laid back, however, more respect him than her. It's a wise decision to look and hire from the outside in this case. Yes morale is deep in the toilet, but Larry's been singing a different tune to corporate to keep his arse out of a sling. He has handled personell situations very improperly over the last three months, including pitting two individuals that HATE each other in some type of childish competition to see who the survivor will be. It's freakin' foolish. Larry is no more a GM than Susan was. At least folks actually liked Susan a little, they just didn't respect her. Now, not many like Larry and no one respects him. As for who (or whom) formerly from ATV and currently at ARK interviewed... I think you can figure it out for yourself.

From what I have heard they all turned them down......

So, what changes will Chuck most likely bring to THV?

I FINALLY got the chance a few minutes ago to see Meredith Mitchell give the weather report (courtesy of THV 2 Online) and I hate to admit it, but she actually looked quite sexy in that outfit she was wearing. She does need voice lessons, however.

That being said, she is definitely no Becky Ditchfield, who may very well go down as the most popular third string meterologists in the history of Little Rock TV.

BTW,is it just me, or is the sports report on THV2.com a day late. The weather and the news seemed current, but the sports report seemed to be a report from yesterday.

So what's the reaction in the THV newsroom to the news about Maulden? Lots of people there have been through several news directors. Are people nervous?

"That being said, she is definitely no Becky Ditchfield, who may very well go down as the most popular third string meterologists in the history of Little Rock TV."

Where did she get her degree in meterology? Apparently you have not been watching Little Rock TV very long if you think Ditchfield is/was one of the best. She was probably one of the worst; looks and talent.

What's the matter, 12:17? did she turn you down when you asked her for a date? Remember, she was the 2007 Babe Bracket winner, and I think The Buzz knows a thing or two about babes.

My bad, 12:27, not 12:17, referring to the post above.

You sound about as juvenile as they do on the show with its juvenile-level content. Ha.

I don't think anyone is nervous. Does anyone have a reason to be nervous? Is he going to come in and clean house or move people around? That is doubtful. Who would he move and to where?

At 3:56 PM, October 14, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think everyone is safe at THV. If your contract is up and you haven't done so hot, maybe be worried, otherwise, nobody should be nervous.

At 4:32 PM, October 14, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have really never seen a ND come in and just clean house right off the bat. Maybe it has happened, but I have never seen or heard of it actually happening. Besides, I think there are a lot of good people in that newsroom who've suffered under bad management.

At 2:07 AM, October 15, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just saw Meredith give the weather report again, and is it just me, or did she wear the exact same outfit that she wore yesterday. Well, I guess we can add getting a wardrobe to her "to do" list.

At 7:39 AM, October 15, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The best thing this Maulden guy could do off the bat is fix that EP problem (either hire one or do away with the position -- both of the current EPs weren't meant to do that job), try to get the morning show people that left back (because the show looks like crap), get a few more people in that newsroom to help share the load ( to fix the morale problem) and ask Larry to bring back the Slushee machine!

At 10:29 AM, October 15, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think the morning show looks like crap at all. I have watched for years, and even with Robyn gone, it still is my fav. Allison seems to have a better attitude than Robyn.

Why is it that grown adults, with careers and families get on a "blog" and say horrible things about people at other stations, just to make themselves look better? Do they really look better, or do they look like they have gone back to the 3rd grade? To those that constantly insult employees from KARK, KATV, KLRT, and KTHV, Grow up! Let them do their jobs, and you do yours... And further more, shame on you if you work at one of those stations and you blog or comment on company time!

They need to bring back Beth Warran or Tracy Douglas. She could do the weather and would compliment B.J. better than a younger woman.

Speaking of THV, is former THVer Kat really going to do the KARN morning show? Is Robin going to KATV at the first of the year? And better yet -- who killed Larry the garden cat?

I knew that Becky Ditchfield should've taken Larry the Garden Cat with her when she moved to Colorado.

Barbara Roberts was canned at 4 for lack of ratings. She's not that good. Alyson is the best person for the job, she wanted to wait and see who the new ND was beofre making up her mind. The job is hers if she wants it. And Robyn is NOT going to KATV. Now, who killed Larry? it's more like WHAT killed Larry. Larry was hit by a car.

More like an ambulance.

C'mon, people. If you think the last three months has been the Best of Audas when it comes to boners, you've got short term memory.

Let's go back several years. First, there was the Live and Five program which was an absolute ratings disaster. He'll blame the lead-in until the Lord Jesus takes him away to his glory cloud in the sky, but that's when someone at the pearly gates will tell Audas it was just a bad idea from the beginning and shame on him for taking away the respectability of anyone on air who had to take part is such a disaster.

Then--or was it before--he had the local mad scientist at 11 build him a news set that he got the plans from by watching other TV stations. Colors to make any female or gay man turns the channel.

There's not room to go into the many clowns that he hired...eh... wait that was Raines... sorry.

Then, in the last 18 months, key reporters, producers management and anchors have all jumped ship and now he loses yet another veteran anchor--the third in the last year.

Let's not go into the torture of the three-month goodbye of Anne Jansen. Get ready for a look back at Anne's Hairdo History going into every commercial break. Gawd, where's some Drano and a shot glass?

Larry's answer to success and the feather in his cap: Dawn Scott.

Can't wait to see the November ratings.

The first thing Chuck should do is fire Nick, our nitwit executive producer here who has a bad habit of pi$$ing of the staff and the people we cover.

At 5:17 PM, October 17, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You could not be more right about Nick. He is such a complete fish out of water. Half the time he has no idea what he is doing, the other half of the time he is pi$$ing (i like the above poster's use of "$$")people off. I have never worked with a more rude and arrogant colleague. Please, Chuck. Do the right thing: get rid of the dead weight and bring in more qualified and courteous people. We need better morale in here.

Throw Michelle in as well. You talk about pi$$ing people off - she's the queen. All she does is talk about KAnsas City. In Kansas City this, in Kansas City that. If it were so Freakin spectacular, what are you doin' here? Please go back.

Becky (Ditchfield), will you marry me?

At 2:39 PM, October 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm a former employee at 11, I'm not related to Nick and I've never been to his house. Unless the phone list has been updated, he doesn't know my home phone number.

See all the space on this blog wasted on on-air people and upper management, I have to take up for Nick.

I'm not saying he's perfect or that he can't get on peoples nerves. He got on mine on occasion, but I never thought long about it because his motives are clear.

From the day he started working there to last Friday, he wanted to win. There is no one in that building who wishes Channel 11 would succeed more than Nick.

If he gets put out with you it's because of one of two things: you're not doing your job or you're doing it halfway when you're capable of doing more. The second reason would be you're the next person he talks to after dealing with a deadbeat employee and you have the bad luck of talking to him next.

That's Nicks' only flaw. He doesn't like the BS to get in the way of what should be a pretty straightforward process and it just doesn't really work that way anymore in that business.

If you little corpulent fundaments in the newsroom and other complainers hope that thw new ND gets rid of Nick, I hope you're ready to work harder. If the ND has any thoughts about canning him--and he doesn't because he's a smart guy-- I hope Gannett has developed a way to download the contacts in Nick's brain. He will lose the one person in that newsroom who knows people, makes calls all day long, maintains his contacts and unselfishly gives it (other people call it spoonfeeding) to reporters who then go gripe about him on the way to their story.

There are certain people in every office or operation that are the glue that keeps it all together. Behind the scenes at 11, that guy is Nick Genty.

If Chuck has anything to worry about with Nick, it's that he'll leave.

At 3:04 PM, October 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

From the same former employee, I'd like to comment on Michelle.

To the employee complaining about her talking about a bigger market; is it possible you're missing the point? Is it possible they did something that was successful that could make your station better?

Try to stiffle the pettiness in your DNA and see if there's something in her experiences you can learn from to take back to the double-wide every night to ponder.

There's one universal truth about someone who complains like that: they haven't worked anywhere bigger, they think they know it all and they're an old dog that can't learn new tricks. The building has several national merit winners in that department.

Put up with her flaws and her occasional lack of humility because Michelle is one of the best producers to come through those doors in a long time.

I imagine like Nick, the bulk of Michelle's day is the frustration of doing something her job depends on without the resources she needs and that Gannett CAN afford.

It's a shame Larry Audas and the geniuses at corporate didn't have the talent to find a way to get Nick and Michelle on the same page. That would be something to see; a good producer teamed with someone who knows the market better than anyone in the room.

I think 11's biggest danger is that most people in the newsroom take their frustrations out on each other. The problem continues to be upstairs and in suburban Washington, D.C., not in the cubicle next to you.

At 10:14 PM, October 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

ok, i've seen everyone at thv make a dumb decision at one time or another. michelle makes some pretty dumb decisions when it comes down to what and especially how to cover news stories. that doesn't mean she is a bad producer. she is an awesome producer. she can write and produce like it's no one's business, but when it comes to important decisions she is awful. she does have a lot more work because of her new ep title... a lot more than nick.

nick understands what it's like out in the field, unlike michelle, and has much more understanding of what it takes to turn a story. the problem with nick is having to battle with michelle, and not having a full staff.

i don't understand why they gave nick the ep title?! he has never produced a day in his life, and has no idea how to! how does his new ep title expand his job tasks? he does the same thing!

part of being a producer is making good journalistic decisions. michelle is awful?! i wouldn't say that. michelle is a bad-ass! i think she's too gun-hoe, but what do you expect! nobody is on the same page about anything! there hasn't been a news director! larry hasn't been a real nd... letting nick and michelle battle out what stories to cover? anyone could tell that scenario aint gonna work out well. i hope that something changes with chuck.

maybe he'll make nick learn to produce or something, i don't know. keep piling on stuff for people to do, like they're already doing.

That's funny. I thought that person was lost when they let Kat walk out the door. Except for the reporter bit. Maybe the new ND will have enough brains to keep someone there. The rest of us are hurting from the poor decisions that have been piling up here.
