KNWA Exec Promoted

Source: TV Newsday Blake Russell to serve be vice president of marketing and operations. He’s succeeded as VP/general manager of KNWA Fayetteville, Ark., by Mike Vaughn.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group today announced the appointment of Blake Russell to serve as the company’s vice president of marketing and operations. Working with Nexstar’s 29 general managers, he will be responsible for the conception, execution and implementation of the company’s strategic initiatives and special projects.

Russell has served as vice president/general manager of Nexstar’s KNWA (NBC) Fayetteville , Ark. , and KFTA (Fox) Fort Smith , Ark. , since 2004. During that time, he re-launched and rebranded the station with the KNWA call letters, and last year launched KFTA.

In making the announcement, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook commented, “During Blake’s 10 years with Nexstar, he has been instrumental in re-launching and re-positioning stations in Beaumont , Shreveport , and Ft. Smith/Fayetteville. Blake will bring this experience to the corporate level to help lead the continuing evolution of the company to a multi-platform, local content and service provider. He will also play a key role in our regional hub strategies.”

Prior to joining Nexstar, Russell held various promotion and production management positions at KJAC Beaumont, Texas; KLRT/KASN Little Rock, Ark.; and KAIT Jonesboro, Ark.

Mike Vaughn, will replace Russell as VP/GM KNWA. He will have additional oversight of KFTA under the terms of a shared services and joint sales agreement with Mission Broadcasting. Nexstar has entered into a definitive agreement to sell KFTA to Mission and is awaiting FCC approval.

Vaughn has been director of sales for KARK Little Rock and KNWA/KFTA since August 2005. Prior to that, Vaughn was general sales manager at KNWA/KFTA and local sales manager at KSFX/KOLR Springfield, Mo. He also held various sales positions at KPBI and KPOM/KFAA Fayetteville/Ft. Smith.

Scott Picky is the greatest behind the scenes man Arkansas news has ever seen. Everything he touches, from "What's the Dill" to "That's a Great Flippin Question" is golden, and should be enshrined in the TV hall of fame.

Scott Picky is also the pinnacle of masculinity. Mothers worldwide hope their sons are a quarter as macho as the Pickster. I'd campaign for his word to instantly become law, but I know that Picky is also the most humble man on earth.

Scott is light.

Scott is truth.

Scott is love.

(I've never met anyone who actually liked the man. Not one breathing, sentient organism on the face of this planet. He was actually not born... but manufactured by Snap-On.)

Maybe in your lifetime, but the fact is that KRTV Channel 17 was the first television station in Arkansas.

With what network was it affiliated?

Do you know what happened to it.

Scott Pickey has the best eye for on air news talent in market. Period, end of story!

At 11:17 AM, October 11, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All he cares about are looks. Viewers notice how ditzy they are, and we sure notice how lazy they are with putting packages together. (they all suck). Not to mention how they habitually screw over their employees with overtime, and having interns report (free labor) to prevent paying overtime for employees. But the interns are up to par with their reporters!

Even the FOX 24 stories look like more thought is put into them, and that doesn't say much!

Just take Hamblin, for example. She was kicked off the desk and nearly run out of town. And it was all to make way for some beauty queen who doesn't have a day of broadcast or anchoring experience! And let's not forget a prior morning anchor who never got through college. That nonsense doesn't fly in bigger markets!

Count the number of college degrees in all the station bios, then go to KNWA/FOX 24. Need I say more?

Now... to me it looks there's maybe 3 people, including Scott, defending him, and pretending to be a mass of defense.

But, let's imagine for a moment that all of this outpouring of support is for real. All I have to say is... good for you.

Stand behind your captain as he steers the ship straight for the rocks. From poor, rushed coverage of big stories, to at best misleading and at worst outright lying in promos... KNWA is doing nothing but dropping ever further in the ratings. And with 40's new set taking away that coveted "We're new to the area, and we'll watch the NBC station because it has a better look"-group, you're set to redefine what it means to be third in the market. Which is pretty sad, because there's a lot of great talent at the station that the others would die for (Turner, Flippin, Ray, Dill, Hogan, Sargent, Skoff, Curin, and sports guys, I'm looking at you).

Having a nice looking set is a "business plan"? Does that mean KFSM is copying KNWA by "striving to be number 1 in the ratings" or any other such ND corporate mouthflap?

40/29 got a new set because their old set sucked. Not to copy anyone... that's like saying KNWA started broadcasting HD because 40/29 was doing it.

geesh what a vicious room. scotty once worked for me some 20 years ago a a cub reporter/anchor. what I remember is that he head a good level head on his shoulders.

for those of you who think cares only about the cosmetics of news...it is important. Nobody likes to look at ugly people on the air...particularly the three eyed gargoyles.

scott is a solid journalist who is demanding. If former employees dislike him, it would be because he made them do their job.

Scott loved his staff at KNWA. Most of you don't know this but he was recently given the ax. He was proud of the product and its growth.

My only advice to those who work there now...give your next news director a chance. Scott appreciated your loyalty.

It's sad to see one of the good guys walked off the plant. Lets hope Mike learns real quick about the duties of a producer vs the duties of a director. I wish even him the best of luck although he's already made a horrible decision.

Scott will know me as "Big Boy". I havent seen him in two decades. That's 20 years for some of you in Nextsar management who were in on this decision.

I'm sure there is more to this story. And can't wait for Paul Harvey to say Good'day.

He wouldn't want me posting this, but when you punch his name into Google and a lot of anonymous gossip pops up, some truth needs to get out there.

(I'm correcting a typo.)

I didn't work with him at KNWA, therefore, I'm not speaking to things he may or may have not done while there. I can tell you that he had a lot of passion for the place based upon our conversations. While it's unfortunate what happened, he'll bounce back.

As for your reply, it IS anonymous gossip when you don't have the guts to put a name to it. In this age, it's easy to slander someone behind the veil of an anonymous name.

That's why if you want to speak the truth (from your perspective), have the decency to put your name up on there. Stand behind what you say.

Otherwise, it's exactly what you say it's not -- anonymous gossip.

I worked with Scott Pickey in Raleigh and was so happy when he was canned from WRAL. He tried to take the number one station in the market and run it into the ground while reducing employee morale to an all-time low.

He has taken his act to Wilmington and is destroying morale there also.

He recently fired a nice young new talent with a College Education so he could hire a local sports hero that sent straight to MLB from High School and like the earlier post does not have a college education. I guess Scott is trying anything to keep his job there. My guess it will not work and his days will be numbered there also.

No, his days are not numbered, unfortunately. He is hand-holding the GM who has no experience in TV. His record for the past 3 months at WWAY includes both anchors leaving and losing at least 5 reporters. Evil has found a new home, and the rest of us are looking to get out from under his Nazi leadership. He is anything but a good and decent man, Mr. Lokay. I post this anonymously as I still need to eat.

Another example of Scott's rogue journalism and sensationalism. He may take some heat for this one...hopefully.
