FS Reporter Moves to KARK; Things Shaky for NWA Weekend Anchor

This from a tipster:
KFSM's Mallory Hardin moved out of NWA and back closer to home. She's
now a reporter at KARK.

KNWA's Alexa Hamblin isn't expected to stay there much longer. Her
contract will soon be up, and her cushy reporter/weekend anchor gig has
been posted
.

Mallory deserves it. Way to go and good luck in LR!

I'm shocked that Alexa would want to leave her "cushy weekend anchor" job.

I mean... being forced onto a morning show with no warning because management doesn't like you aside... she had it made in the shade!

Just a guess... but I bet she's pretty happy to get out of that place.

Mallory Hardin. Thank you for leaving my television screen. I can't stand you. If I watch you stumble over any more of your reports, I may have developed tourettes.

Enjoy Little Rock. May you slightly turn your body during your reports instead of standing straight and looking into the camera.

Ah, how does the old saying go? Like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, or something like that? When will Nexstar finally die? Can someone make it go away, or move to another country? Someone...anyone..plllleeeeaaasseee

NWA news can't be any worse than WBBJ news out of Jackson, TN. WBBJ should stand for "We Basically Babble (in) Jackson." 7 Eyewitness News should be called 7 You Missed it News (because we {the station}screwed up). Jonesboro news (KAIT) is of better quality than this.

KNWA is the worst excuse for a tv station!! Unfortunately though, it was a good marketing move to focus on NW Arkansas, and unfortunately they seem to be setting trends for the other tired stations. I usually can't stomach watching KNWA, but when I do land on it, it seems Blake Russell, the GM, is always on air doing some sort of editorial or pr piece! PLEEEZE--does that bother anyone else?
I noticed the huge feature spread on Neile Jones in the Democrat-Gazette. Lovely article, although I thought it was interesting that she said she got her BA and Master's at OU when she got her Master's from Webster University in Fayetteville.
There are a few talented people at that station who are also really solid folks. Just hope they have a plan "B" because Nexstar won't be loyal to anyone no matter how hard you work, or what your value is in the community. It's a P and L game to them.

The whole KNWA weekend anchor thing doesn't surprise me at all. There have been revolving people on the weekend for months now.

Gee, I wonder how Mallory got the job in LR. Hmmmm...

Certainly it can't be because of her solid journalistic skills, or her complete capability of broadcasting without screwing up. No, no.

But hey, I can't say I'm not jealous.

Hey did UCA have to pay for Malloy Hardin to get the job at KARK?

Does this mean that UCA will get a break on KARK's college tour?

Just wondering

At 7:14 PM, September 20, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mallory Hardin is hot...but, I've never seen her on tv. I'm surprised she's as awful as everyone says she is. If true, it's a shame she got a job in lr.

At 7:59 PM, September 20, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mallory is far from as bad as people on here try to make her seem. I can think of at least 3 other reporters from the other two stations that she's a head and shoulders above.

She's a good reporter. Not great, but good. The move doesn't surprise me at all.

She is a very young reporter with a very promising career. KARK recognizes that.

NWA news can't be any worse than WBBJ news out of Jackson, TN. WBBJ should stand for "We Basically Babble (in) Jackson."

Forget 'BBJ... bad news = WABG in Greenville, MS (which actually covers part of eastern Arkansas). You should look at their video clips sometime online... their anchors have issues with scripts... every second of their video is shaky... and audio problems in stories run rampant.

At 2:52 AM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jeez, KNWA hired Lu Hardin's daughter? And they hired the Miss Arkansas woman too? That's pretty rough. Any other swimsuit model/daughter of politican/notables want a job? Any Hutchinson daughters around who want a job on-air? Sure they could get a deal...

Mallory worked for KFSM, Channel 5, in Fort Smith/Fayetteville. She was a very poor reporter. Her hair kept getting in the way. She perfectly fit the description from the Don Henly song about the "bubbleheaded bleached Blonde who can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye", except she was a brunette. It had reached the point when she came on to do a story, I hit the mute button.

At 12:21 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

And what is your point? Nothing wrong with hitting the mute button during most local news shows

At 12:41 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just watched the Noon show on KARK and saw Kelly George do the best interview that has been done on Arkansas television in years.

KARK should have moved her to LR instead.

If I had to guess, most of you making negative comments are probably "lifers" from NWA and are just frustrated that Mallory moved markets so quickly while you continue to wait for that magical call.

At 1:01 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

that magical call????? it's little rock for cryin out loud

At 2:02 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wouldn't really say LR is a magical call. It's ok at best. Sometimes I wonder if LR stations really are in a higher market. Some things make them look small time.

How do you know ?

If WBBJ should stand for "We Basically Babble (in) Jackson what do you folks call each others stations around here?

All of these comments are going to be great evidence in an libel/defamation of character suit.

At 7:55 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know what? You are so rediculous. I am glad I am not in front of the camera. You all should be ashamed of yourselves. I went to UCA with Mallory and she is a great person, solid reporter and a big step ahead of all of you with her morals and journalistic skill. Grow up and learn to be more like her instead of acting like you do.

At 10:23 PM, September 21, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I went to UCA too, but I graduated being able to spell 'ridiculous'.

I guess I *should* be more like her, though... I never really thought of having my dad get me a job at a station where he spent thousands of taxpayer dollars on commercials. Big oversight on my part.

At 1:04 AM, September 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Forget about Kristin Fisher, 2:14 PM, Sep 21. A magical call would be from either Beth Hunt, Melinda Mayo, Heather Crawford, or Melissa Simas, wanting to be comforted. Now that would be a magical call.

At 8:21 AM, September 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What? Just because she's Lu Hardin's daughter, she's not allowed to have a job?

At 9:32 AM, September 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You all are amazing. And to bring up the commercials that UCA pays for. If we are going to say that Mal can't work where there are TV ads for UCA, then she can't work at all stations in Arkansas, most in Oklahoma, and many in west Tenn, N Louisiana, S Missouri and parts of Kansas and Texas. Come on. To exclude her from employment based on her family is actually against the law, so stop bitching because it makes no difference. And DCG, since this is your blog, you ever thought about controlling some of what goes on here to protect yourself in a libel suit? Just a thought. Since all of these post are annon, you are the one who is going to be getting sued. Just give thought to moderating some of the comments, that's all.

Not all of it's been about public figures - there was a thread not too long ago that dealt with off-air people, who are NOT public figures... and, even so, it could probably be proved that comments made here (factual or not) can affect a person's chances of being hired for future jobs and/or keeping the ones they have. Learn some civility and professionalism.

Oh, yeah, it'll be when you ACTUALLY give some advice and stop bs'ing about "libel" because you don't know what you're talking about. Yeah, can't wait to hear you define the aforementioned values as well...care to take a stab and telling the rest of us who've been in the business at least 20 years what you mean?

Oh yeah...one more for you, armchair attorney...

Bloggers cannot be hit with libel suits on the basis of anonymous postings on their Web sites because federal law grants them immunity by explicitly stating that they cannot be treated as the "publisher" of such comments, a federal judge has ruled.

In his 22-page opinion in DiMeo v. Max, U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell held that the pre-emption clause of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act -- a provision that remains intact despite court rulings that struck down some of its key provisions --
effectively "overrides the traditional treatment of publishers under statutory and common law."

Any more you want to say about libel, my weenie friend?

I got nothin' - I'll back off the legalese.

At the same time, though, real, mature professionals do not sit here and gossip about co-workers (on-air or off) in a public forum. They treat each other with some freakin' respect and dignity, dammit. That's why this business is going to hell in a handbasket -- we hire uncivilized children.

I am sometimes speechless at the ridiculous and shallow comments on this website. It's OK to think a "babe" is "hot"...but if you must run your comments down that street, at least show a little respect. "Women" are "Beautiful"...it's bad enough that your lack of education and depth of character is apparent in the fact that you only care about the "faces" in our industry, and not the substance of the news, producers, writers and management. There is plenty of praise and criticism to go around about the product (television news) without lowering ourselves to simply be a judge of someones looks. I hope that some of you who constantly comment on the visual appeal of the on-air talent have girlfriends, wives and daughters who read this blog...and that they recognize the lack of character in your comments.

We don't have to focus on their looks. If you want to talk about their skill then the conversation would even be worse because KFSM's reporters are all bad. If you are a KFSM reporter don't feel too bad because your anchors aren't very good either. From top to bottom KFSM has the market cornered on pathetic, pitiful, and stupid news reporting.

God only knows what would happen if we tried to figure out who the hottest TV babe in Little Rock is. Much less a larger market, such as Denver, LA, or New York City.

To the 5:07 poster

You ever seen a butt-ass ugly woman on TV? With the exception of maybe Candy Crowley, the answer is Nope. And you never will. It is a visual medium. We want Size 2 hotties with great smiles and perky boobs. I mean who wants to see some doofus-looking guy report on the city council meeting, when instead, we can have beauty ?

At 9:02 AM, September 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To 8:49 poster from the 5:07 poster:

It's not about whether or not the on-air talent is pretty or not. Of course they are basically all pretty...they look healthy and fit and energetic, and yes, some are size 2's and have, as you put it, "great smiles and perky boobs". I am a woman, no longer in television news, and I believe that they are "easy on the eyes"...nothing wrong with that! You miss my point: That is NOT the issue on most subjects on this blog! I just want them to have recognition beyond their looks...Hey...I love Aaron Peters on KARK...now he is EASY on the eyes....

WINTER STORM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AKA: What the KFSM Weather guys say when they can't think of anything else clever to say. Which is nearly all the time.

I believe this stems from something to do with Charles Salser (former 40/29 chief met) having a bad forecast once. Wait! This time it must be the 40/29 weather guys because it was KFSM who blew ALL the winter weather forecasts last year.

At 11:36 AM, September 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

For those who don't know, the "WINTER STORRRRMMMMM!!!!" bit results not from a botched forecast by Charles Salser, but from the way he said "Look's like we may have a WINTER STORRRRRMMMM coming" every time he talked about the possibility of winter weather.

And it isn't just a Channel 5 thing, people all over the market found it amusing.

At 11:55 AM, September 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am not sure anyone at KFSM should be questioning Charles Salser or any other meteorologist for that matter. Didn't KFSM's chief meteorologist "graduate" from a mail order weather program?

She can work in Little Rock just based on her work history and experience... like many other new hires. Claiming her dad got her the job is something NO one on this board is qualified to say.

It doesn't matter whether Lu got her the job or not.. Mallory is working in Little Rock TV and many of you well... are not!

If you are a news director, why wouldn't you hire a charming person with a myriad of political connections that grew up in Arkansas and knows this state quite well?

She will do fine.

That's not the only thing that does not work there.

This for no charge:
1.) Start by dumping the THV-2 thing (nobody watches)that takes away bandwidth and degrades the resolution on their digital channel VHF Channel 12.1 DT.
(KATV has the same problem)

2.) Get rid of the gray pillars on digital channel 12.1 as they serve no useful purpose and nobody uses them anymore.

3.) Control the program audio level better when going from commercial to studio. Start low and increase is a good rule of thumb. If nothing else, buy a compression amp and install it.

Many more . . .

At least Labrue saved the day.

I don't think 40 "dropped the ball" since they already said its not till Mid-October when they officially transition their sets. Yes, they are using it but NO that wasn't the official debut.

I understand your jealously! Especially if you work for kfsm and have to work with those 80's sets.

Also does 4 start like 2 minutes later so they can stay on the air a minute longer before they go to the first commercial? I think it's more important to start first

If anyone's stretching the truth, it's KNWA.

They make it seem like their "Rogers station" is the entire building that it's located in. In reality, it's one room, with a camera about the quality of your standard stick cam (remote control and such) with a background nailed up behind it. Very similar to their Fox station... hell, they don't even rent the entire NBC 24 building... just the lesser half.

Neither of those constitute a station. A station is where you can assemble and put on a newscast... not one room with a camera and a desk.

I'm not impressed by 40's new set, but they ARE the first to have a station in Rogers. Period.

Name calling usually comes from photographers and cam ops. Have fun doing that for the rest of your life since you have no potential for anything better.

Of course you can always hope to be chief photographer or whatever. Although, it seems the requirements at Ch5 for that position seem to be 3 parts lazy and 1 part stupid.

Former TV Weatherman Found Guilty In Pool Incident
Wednesday, October 3, 2007 10:07 AM CDT
By Wanda Freeman
TIMES RECORD • WFREEMAN@SWTIMES.COM

A former television weatherman accused of harassing an 11-year-old girl by taking surreptitious pictures of her was found guilty in a bench trial Tuesday in Fort Smith District Court.

Justin Povick, 25, was charged with the Class A misdemeanor in connection with a June 12 incident at Creekmore Park, where the girl was on a swimming outing with Girls Inc.

Two days after the incident, when he turned himself in and was released on $1,500 bond, TV station 40/29 KHBS/KHOG’s president and general manager confirmed that he was no longer employed there as a meteorologist.

District Judge David P. Saxon withheld a sentencing decision after asking Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Jason Hunter for a recommendation and then deciding he wanted to consider defense counsel’s plans.

The offense is punishable by up to a year in county jail and/or a maximum $1,000 fine. Hunter recommended a one-year suspended sentence and counseling by Larry Gant, a local counselor highly regarded in the legal community.

Saxon ordered attorney Eddie Christian Jr. to notify him by 5 p.m. Thursday if he plans to appeal the verdict and possibly seek a state forensic examination of his client.

If the defense chooses to appeal, Saxon indicated he would set an appeal bond and the case would be forwarded to Sebastian County Circuit Court, where Povick could ask for a jury trial.

The judge’s verdict came after a 90-minute hearing in which the girl testified first, followed by two women who worked at Girls Inc., the pool manager and three police officers, including one who presented video evidence he obtained from the camera.

The girl testified that she was lying face up on a lounge chair when she noticed Povick on a nearby lounge chair, lying face down and holding a camera down toward the ground. He was viewing the camera but pointing it at her, she said.

Upon questioning about her reaction, the girl told Hunter she was scared.

She said she told one of the Girls Inc. chaperones, Brittany Slamons, what was happening.

Slamons and Sarah Harp both testified that they responded by going to the area where Povick was lounging and pretended to be watching the pool while checking him out. Harp said she did not see the camera but heard a clicking noise coming from under a shirt or towel that was covering his hands.

The women reported to the pool manager, Michael Norwood, pointing Povick out from a distance. Norwood testified that he approached the wrong man and began asking him questions about whether he was taking pictures of people at the pool.

The conversation was in earshot of Povick, who began packing his bag; Slamons and Harp began waving their arms at Norwood, and a park employee standing nearby got on the intercom and said “to your left,” trying to tell Norwood which man he should be talking to.

Norwood said he quickly turned to Povick and tried to talk to him, but Povick refused, saying, “I’ve got to go.”

Norwood said he followed Povick toward the bathroom, his voice getting louder as he tried to get Povick to stop.

“I said I need to see the pictures on the camera. ... You know there’s a protocol to follow about taking pictures. You have to get permission. ... He just kept saying ‘I’ve got to go.’ I told him, ‘If you don’t show me the pictures on your camera, I’m going to have to call the police,’” Norwood testified.

When Povick reached the fence around the pool area, he broke into a full run, Norwood said, and eventually kicked off his shoes.

The foot chase ended in a wooded area past an old railroad track behind the Girls Inc. building on Old Greenwood Road next to the park, and police arrived to find Povick on the ground surrounded by park and city personnel who had chased him.

Povick was taken to Sparks Regional Medical Center with severe injuries to his bare feet, and his camera was given to Fort Smith Police Sgt. Adam Holland, director of the Cyber Investigation Unit, who retrieved the images from the Creekmore Park incident and an unrelated incident.

All of the images — about 5 minutes and 47 seconds worth of video — concentrated on the feet and lower legs of girls, with the video of the Fort Smith girl at Creekmore Park lasting about 5 seconds.

The defense and prosecution disagreed on whether Povick’s behavior met the statutory requirement of purposeful action intended to harass, annoy or alarm the victim.

Hunter argued that by the girl’s own testimony, there was no doubt she was alarmed.

He said the defendant’s intent must be inferred from the circumstances, and a presumption exists that a person intends the natural consequences of his actions.

Christian argued that the surreptitious nature of his client’s actions indicated he did not intend to cause alarm, and as soon as he became aware that alarm was caused, he stopped taking pictures and left the scene.

If KFSM is so lame, why is it used as a great source of news for other stations? I can think of 3 or 4 stories that 40 has blaitently ripped off of Channel 5 in the last 2 or 3 weeks. Sex offender at the fair, anyone? If we didn't update our website so much, you'd have nothing to go on.

And scalping involving Hannah Montana concert tickets has been on all the major news networks... and parents around the area are pissed about it. It might not be a "blood and guts" lead, but it was good on a slow news day.

It has been said a million time before but one more time can't hurt. KFSM gets good ratings in spite of how amateur they are because of the demographics of the area. People in the river valley want someone who focuses on them. They feel like KFSM is the channel that has been "most loyal" to them. Most of the river valley area is jealous of the NW Arkansas area. They can't lure the jobs that NW can. Now and really for the past 20 years most locals in the river valley have decided to take a opposite role and try to keep things the same and to keep out new development. This has led to a deep divide in most of the population. People in the river valley don't want to keep hearing about the new development in NW Arkansas. They want to keep things nice and simple. KFSM is the most simple station. They are not flashy and their inability to communicate effictively makes them appear "more local". Yes, KFSM wins the ratings but it has nothing to do with them being better than anyone. If anything, its their stupid local look that wins it for them.

All right. Then answer this question.

A) The River Valley makes up a little more than half of the DMA. If what you're saying is true, 5 should take less than 50% of the total ratings at any given time (with 40 and 24 getting the vast majority of the NWA, and a piece of the RV.) Why is it, then, that there are several times when 5's ratings exceed the *combined* total of 24 and 40 (3+ points more at 5 and 6 alone.)?

The rest of your post is just ignorance. 5 has as much NWA news as anyone else (sometimes more that the RV, sometimes less, depending on the day). The only thing that can be unequivocally said about Channel 5 is their set sucks. It sucks hard. The other 2 stations blow them out of the water as far as set goes.

Also: Saying everyone in the RV is jealous of NWA leads me to believe that a) you work at KNWA and b) you're a classist.

At 5:03 PM, October 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

why would they have to work at knwa? i'm pretty sure 40/29 is getting into the nwa elitist club too.

At 5:15 PM, October 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Most of the people at KFSM are professional and hard working. The problems they have are all to do with the leadership. It starts with the GM but includes nearly all of the leadership positions. Until there is change at the top KFSM will slowly be left further and further behind and with them the ratings will fall.

You have no idea how a rating works in this market. KFSM has a huge share in the RV. I will say however that they have really grown up North. The rating in the RV is for them is making up for the smaller rating for NWA. Neilsen doesn't get enough diaries returned in NWA so they use a weight system to make up the difference from the sample in the RV. This is why the 5 and 6 news ratings are even high in NWA. The older demo of 45 and older is available more in the RV than in NWA because of the length of the drive home.
