KNWA Hires New Razorback Nation Team Member
Source: KNWA Press Release KNWA-TV today announced the next wave in its coverage commitment to The Razorback Nation. Marty Houston will be joining the largest sports staff in the state offering game analysis and a unique perspective of the team behind the scenes. “Marty’s years of following the Hogs and his popularity on the television show, “The Huddle” makes him a valuable information source for Razorback Athletics. Marty is deeply entrenched into the past, present, and future of The Razorback Athletic program. He’s a true walking Razorback encyclopedia”, commented Blake Russell, KNWA-TV Vice President and General Manager.Marty will be at all home and away games as well as appearing on the Pig Trail Preview at 10:20pm on Friday nights as well as on The Pig Trail, Sunday at 5:30pm. “The Pig Trail” is a weekly 30 minute comprehensive wrap up show on Sunday evenings.” It usually airs at 10:30pm on Sunday nights, however with NBC’s Sunday Night NFL football, the show has been moved to Sunday at 5:30pm so the hog fan can enjoy a special “Hog Call” before the NFL kickoff.
“Over this past year I have gotten to know the staff working on The Razorback Nation and have come to appreciate and respect the dedication to developing the Razorback brand on KNWA.” said Marty Houston. “I am grateful and looking forward to the opportunity to work with them during what promises to be an exciting football season for the Hogs.”
In September 2005, KNWA became the First and Only broadcast outlet to commit a sports department to cover the Razorbacks 100% of the time. “It’s interesting, when we started The Razorback Nation franchise, we slowly began to see our competitors increase their involvement little by little. Now, if you look across the state, many television stations are trying to get into the game, however the 3 year track record and resource commitment we have is the best in the state”, said Mr. Russe.

No audio at the top was not the audio ops fault. KNWA has a new sat truck and it was the first major multi-cam/mic remote they've done with it - and they're still working the bugs out.
We can all say what we want about these people but the truth is they dominate with their coverage. Now whether or not you believe it's right to have an army devoted to the Hogs is another question. At last count I believe they have more people covering the Hogs than all the other stations combined in each individual market. It's funny how KHOG has the call letters but are probably last in coverage.
Still no audio off the top....
The viewer at home doesn't know nor care about a new sat truck.
They just know that KARK coverage was screwed up!
Also, what was up with KATV...They were lost on this press conference.

Who's the rocket scientist who convinced them that sports generates any viewers worth having? There's a reason most casts put sports at the bottom of the show and with the least amount of time. Weather is what people watch local news to see, then as a wise old GM once said, News and Sports has to fight to justify its existence on-air. Keep it up KNWA and you'll always remain in the toilet. I wish Marty lots o' luck. He's a nice guy, but that station needs a whole lot more than sports to ever make a dent.

Fox had the best coverage of the Jeff Long press conference. They were first on and last off. What was ch.4 and ch.7 thinking? hello! can I get Jeff Long lead at 5pm please!? I guess only if you watch Fox.

Marty has been covering Arkansas sports as long as anyone. He was also the host of one of the highest rated TV sports shows in the state for more years than I can remember. If you're "from" the Northwest Arkansas area, you know who Marty Houston is.
That being said... Marty is an awesome guy, and his hiring is probably the best move KNWA has made since... well since they started doing news.

You left out the part about how people watched the show because of how bad it was.
Several years ago, I had a few friends call in and convince Marty that the Dallas Cowboys were moving to Arizona.
Like 99% of other Hog fans, without the newspaper, he's lost.

I know who the GM is, and your 10 numbers are only high in 2 counties in your DMA, and yes, in the pot across the board the rest of the time. that hardly qualifies you thinking it, or he, have been successes. Here we go again. KNWA is dead last. when you pluck out the numbers, they become useless. It's a smokescreen to try and gain advertising. Ever wonder how/why KNWA and KHOG claim to be the runaway favorite in NWA? Because you can make the numbers say whatever you want.
I don't like KNWA because of the shit they put their people through, and the pure dishonesty of their practices. They claim that they don't subscribe to Nielsen because they're "inaccurate", yet still claim to be number 1. They don't subscribe to the AP, yet steal from them daily... all to save a few bucks. They go out of their way to make the competition look bad, so they look better.
That's my problem with it... dishonesty.

A) I don't work at Channel 5. And Channel 5 doesn't claim to be number one in NWA. KHOG sends out a release everytime ratings come in to say how well they're doing in NWA. KNWA... well... duh.

Say what you want but I promise you that every company in the market wants to be #1 in NWA. I know that you want to talk about total DMA numbers but the truth is that the future success for the stations is all about Washington and Benton counties. Benton county is even more important. That was the highest concentration of viewers and ad dollars are. It's like the old days of wanting to win the metro numbers. NWA is the new metro. Last I heard none of the stations are hurting on the money side and if there is one that is it would be KFSM.

I've known Marty for a long time. You want meet a nicer guy and before you say that means nothing, I would say that is something you slammed them about with Bo. I would also say Marty has more knowledge of the Hogs than anyone on the air in Arkansas. Is he as smooth of a speaker as some of your male models? Well of course not but remember who the target audience is. Last I checked it was a male sports fan not a female wanting to stare at a hot guy. He's not their anchor just a damn good Hog reporter.

Broadcast journalists do not have to know how to spell correctly.
For the same reason, print journalists are not required to put on tons of makeup to be presentable to their fans.

I would like to pose a question about ratings, though:
NWA is half of the market. Why is it then that the given "run away favorite" in these mystical "NWA Numbers" is still so far behind DMA wide? Shouldn't it at least be more or less marginal? We're talking about numbers, in some cases, that are 5 to 1. That alone shows you how useless cherry picking is.
Just wanted to throw that out there.

Congrats Marty! By the way, on the audio at the Long press conference - I don't know if KNWA's audio was bad or not, but the audio feed provided by the UA, coming from the mic at the podium, was crapalicious. They worked on it for about 20 seconds and left it sub-par.

marty is a great guy without a doubt. he's one of the nicest you can meet and he knows a LOT about the hogs. but personally...i just don't think he has the on-air persona needed to be in a top television station. the huddle was two guys in a radio booth with two cameras, him and ernie witt jr. and they know they're stuff, but he's just kinda BLAH in my opinion. but that's just me.

River Valley people don't watch KNWA anyway since they moved out of Ft Smith.
I din't for news because all they have is NWA news but I always watch their sports. They are way ahead of the rest with that.

Amen to the person who wrote the last comment. I just can't wait to hear from Mr/Ms GOD'S GIFT TO LITTLE ROCK TV NEWS PRODUCTION. Sorry, man but you lack the babes, and that (unfortunately) is what sells in this market. Most people in this market care more about babes than they care about the overall quality of news coverage, much less "the set."
You are probably one that believes that viewers 20-40 have more buying power than those between 50-70 aren't you. Having "Babes" is not what sells in tv land. What sells is having newspeople that you can believe in, not some fresh-out-of college-twenty-something babe. Stay tuned for more education, if needed.
