KLRT First with News Head B-Ball Hog Quits

Been on the road for the last couple of days. A tipster has provided me with the times the LR stations broke the news that Arkansas' new basketball coach has quit:

"FOX16 News broke the story at 5:30P.

Channel 4 broke in NBC Nightly News at 5:52P with the story.

Channel's 7 and 11 did not break into national news to report the story.

On the web, 7, 11, 16 did not have the story on the web as of 5:57 and
Channel 4's Arkansasmatters.com was down."

Rusty was not on at 5:00. He was live on the phone at 6:00.

KARK 4 was the only Little Rock station to have Dana Altman's statement on live. They did a special report during Entertainment Tonight. They were also first to have the statement on their website.

erroneous info 7 & 4 btoh had it by 5:30

I was most impressed with KARK Ch. 4, who had Bo reporting on camera and then they were the only station that carried the actual statement from Dana Altman. Ch. 7 preferred to show Wheel of Fortune.

Never let the facts get in the way of a blog posting. KLRT was not first with the news of Altman's change-of-heart. And, their reporting on the story was the weakest of all four news operations.

What about NWA coverage, you'd think they would be on the ball?

IF TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST,? IF A STATION AIRS NEWS BULLETIN IN A PROGRAM NO ONE VIEWS DOES IT MATTER.

KNWA supplied the live feed to KARK - and carried all of Coach Altman's statement, plus Dr. White's comments as well as instant reaction from players.

No doubt that the benefit of having multiple stations in the state lifted the Nexstar stations above all in coverage and content. It wasn't even close.

At 3:15 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey guys FOXSPORTS.COM and that's how FOX16 had it first in this state.

At 3:27 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Again, KLRT did not have the story first. Get the facts straight.

At 4:19 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Arkansasmatters.com had the story. It was just slow due to the massive numbers of hits.

At 4:30 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK should be commended for being the only station to carry the Altman/White briefing live at 6:45. However, I question their decision to break away from that to report on a tornado in NE Arkansas way out of their viewing area.

At 4:45 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

DCG... do you just post any tip that anyone sends you without checking it out for yourself first? It certainly seems that way.

Great! Any chance of her doing that every day?

Who cares who had it on first?

A mindless sports story that is the laughing stock of the country.

Ok you kool aid drinkers....Arkansasmatters.com didn't have the story first!

FOXSPORTS.COM'S Jeff Goodman posted the story shortly before 5pm.

FOX then had it at 5:30pm.....If the other stations had it first then why didn't they not cut in with it until 5:52PM?

Jonesboro is in KARK's viewing area. It proved to be a good decision. The station was the only Little Rock station there live at 10:00 to show the F-1 tornado damage.

Fox Sports and ESPN.com have scooped the local affiliates repeatedly on this story. KLRT had it first on teevee? So what if they did, or didn't, or did. Was their coverage the best? Would love to know who supplied the tip that KLRT was first on the air. Probably someone from KLRT (surprise) tooting their own horn. Hard to say if it's even true.

At 9:30 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ok here's the deal...Everyone from every station gets on this blog and toots their own horn. So don't act like you don't.

KLRT got the story like everyone else did they just got it quicker.

I am so sick of all the freaking bashing on this blog.

Sorry thats all this blog is about. Bashing. These opinions don't mean reality, they don't mean viewers, and they don't mean ratings. This blog is glorified high-school and don't ever forget it.

Who will be on air with this first?

At 10:23 PM, April 04, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fox goes on the air every night at 9pm. That's one hour before every other station in town goes on at 10pm. Therefore Fox is better because they are on first. Right? Sometimes, no most times, first means nothing. It's all about content and Fox didn't have that.

Hey, with my HD20-700 hi def dvr, I can record my shows and watch Fox 16 at the same time. I get the news a full hour ahead of the other stations and get to see my favorite prime time shows too. Ain't technology great?

BTW, KLRT and KARK are doing a great job with their digital signal and using only one channel of bandwidth. KTHV may be the "High Def" leader but the other stations have them beat in picture quality, true 1080i.

At 11:04 AM, April 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Funny Fox is only 720p so KLRT's 1080i if it is that really doesn't matter.

And you better be getting it over the air. Cable steps on the signal way too much.

At 12:43 PM, April 05, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

nuywlaiWess Moore had it first. He was at Dana Altman's house when his wife said she wasn't coming to Arkansas. That was at 1:21pm. So take KLRT's and KARK's numbers and add them together. Take that number to waffle house, and with a dollar you can get a cup of coffee.

I am receiving it OTA as I do all Little Rock and Pine Bluff stations. I am also able to view the New York HD stations such as WABC, WCBS, WNBC, and WNYW via FTA satellite.

FYI, 720p is the same as 1080i, depends on what you are viewing.

But thanks for your comments.

You KLRT bashers use TIVO, I watched everyone's coverage and they had it first at 5:30 -- the others broke on just before 6:00.
Also, their coverage of the event was solid. Raath and Kelley carried it for at least five minutes, breaking that it was a family issue.
Then at 9:00 had the most comprehensive wrap.

Don't let your bitter envy of a the new kids on the block mirror your judgement.

I do know that a THV sports talking head broke in on my program at 9:14 p.m. last night to announce that Arkansas had another basketball coach. This was something that just could not wait until 10:00 p.m.? Thanks

You guys can bash us at KLRT all you want, but we beat you to the punch on both Altman leaving and on Pelphrey coming. You guys wouldn't even have been able to break into programming had you not seen the story on our newscast.

Oh, and just to stir the pot a little bit more, those of you with TiVO, check out KLRT's Sunday newscast around 9:15, then see KATV's coverage around 10:05 and notice the similarities between what Chris Kolkhorst said and what Rusty said. That was just low, man.

Not a increase in my personal pay check, but an increase in credibility, an increase in viewership, an increase in respect....

Yeah, I guess you could call that a raise...

Not more. Just properly light the set with what they have which is usually done by someone in the Production department. Who does their lighting . . . National Home Center?

Everyone's been covering the coaching thing pretty evenly, but I have to admit that KRLT did an awful good job. David Raath has been very solid and in command of what's been going on and the weekend guy is good to. But props also go to Bo and Mike Irwin from KFSM, they've been the best of the bunch in NWA.
