Winter Storm OR Hogs?
Which will wind up being the bigger story this week in Arkansas, the projected winter weather set to hit the state Thursday OR the Arkansas Razorbacks in Atlanta? Two big stories in one week, just so happen to occur during sweeps.

86 Comments:
The Winter Storm will be number one til it's over, then they'll all switch to covering the Hogs...my opinion, of course.
Has anyone ever put a pig on a sled and pushed it down a hill?
Now there's a live shot for ya!
Well, if Frank, Dale, and the boys
have anything to say about it, they'll say to hell with the winter storm, we're keeping the airwaves to ourselves. Who cares if people's lives are at stake. Our pigs are more important!
Say Hogaleujah!
Sweeps end today.
Just fyi.
Lives at stake? You have to be joking.
"Who cares if people's lives are at stake." ... must've been written
by someone over at 40/29. They seem to think they are the NW Ark Dept of Viewer Security, i.e., we'll keep you safe from the stoooorrrmmmmmm.
They seem to forget people don't know how to prepare for winter weather.
They talk down to their viewers like they are complete idiots when it comes to the obvious.
when it comes to lives the news team will interupt any thing on tv to report bad weather. I don't think there will be any real bad weather tho. So go HOGS go.
Weather is boring.
It is sounding more and more like there really could be some bad weather. But, we'll just have to wait and see! Too bad sweeps ends today...does anyone know how long it takes to get the books back?
That was a called winter storm! I called that winter storm!
Houston Nutt III
how many times can the weather stories be overblown and beat to death? too much if you ask me.
honestly how many ways can you cover snow?
I gotta itchy STTTTTOOOOOOOOORRRRRMMMMM finger.
Oh, don't pretend that the stars of local news aren't the weather people. Which is more likely:
FAMILY MEMBER ONE: Hey, what's the weather going to be like tomorrow?
FAMILY MEMBER TWO: I don't know. I'll watch the local news tonight.
-or-
FAMILY MEMBER ONE: Hey, how is Wal-Mart reacting to allegations of high ranking officials misappropriating money?
FAMILY MEMBER TWO: I don't know, but this minute and a half, one-source story coming up on the local news will sure tell me.
Too bad sweeps end today... would have made a decent push all around.
Looking forward to a respite from 24/7 hog coverage with the 24/7 weather coverage.
Obviously, the big story will be how the WINTER STORRRRRRRRRRRRM affects the Razorbacks as they prepare for Florida. If Florida wins, Nutt can say "Gosh, it snowed so fast it just messes you up."
I suspect we might even be treated to a story about how difficult it was for the TV sports guys to get to Atlanta because of the weather. (Note to sports guys: You aren't the news. Don't navel gaze because nobody cares if your travel plans were messed up by the storm.)
I suspect we might even be treated to a story about how difficult it was for the TV sports guys to get to Atlanta because of the weather.
Maybe a story on KFSM, but 40/29 is already reporting live from Atlanta..
40/29 is calling for a WINTER WWWEEEAAATHER!!!!
It is a sad day in Arkansas TV News History. The question arises as to why Drew Michaels and the rest of the Superdoppler Weather Team will no longer use the term "Winter Storm." Not only is it not used audibly but on the weather bug the warnings are labeled "Winter Weather Warning".
I am very dissappointed in my prodigy. He is afraid of the other bloggers and afraid that people will think he is like me with my overblown winter storm forecasts. But Drew, please do not show this fear. Be a weatherman, BE the Winter Storm.
Sincerely,
Charles Salser
I still want to see a sledding pig
"Souieewooooo.... yee... hah!"
Donna Bragg sledding? Now THAT'S Hometown News worth watching....err. 40/29 News
Boy, if I had a dollar for every time some idiot wrote "WINTER STTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRMMMM" on here, I'd be rich!
"Boy, if I had a dollar for every time some idiot wrote "WINTER STTTTTOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRMMMM" on here, I'd be rich!"
Sorry, Charles, but WINTER STTTTOOOOOOOORRRRRMMMMMM! is intellectual property of KHOG.
Anyone notice that it is still just doing a lot of nothing?
1:38, where are you..? It's coming down hard in Fayetteville and has been for over an hour...
Where's Charles Salser when you need him..?
News flash...
Charles was spotted on a big hill in North Oklahoma sledding with some pigs!
I wish I had been on TV in Oklahoma City. I would have been able to predict the blizzard that hit North Oklahoma and the OKC suburbs. All I would have had to do is recycle old forecasts from working at 40/29
In a winter storm story, you don't get Jancey Sheets in a tight jacket and hip-hugger jeans. Go, Hogs.
Seriously, get over Salser. Move on.
Drew has....so has the weather team
So have the viewers.
But I haven't... LONG LIVE THE WINNTTEERRR SSSTTTOOOOOORRRRMMMMMM!!!!
SSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!!!
Another winter storm is winding down...thoughs on the coverage?
don't know about the nwa stations, but none of the l.r. stations went overboard. most seemed to stress how cold it would get more than anything else. darn, can't beat them to death on this one. go hogs.
Nice to hear that you didn't think they went overboard, considering most of the Little Rock DMA didn't get much in the way of measurable ice and snow.
All of the NWA stations led with Wx. Probably warrented due to the massive closings. Nothing out of the ordinary though.
Oh, nothing short of setting up lights and cameras waiting for the first flake to fall - good grief.
Not surprised the Dept of Hometown Viewers'SSSSTTTTOOORRMMM Central hasn't already been on the air with 'we saw it first, we saw it first' promos.
40/29 provided more tv updates and more web coverage devoted to the winter storm.
Not surprised the Dept of Hometown Viewers'SSSSTTTTOOORRMMM Central hasn't already been on the air with 'we saw it first, we saw it first' promos.
They don't need to, their viewers already know it! 40/29's overall coverage was better.
Coverage was better??? Did anyone see Marianly snifflin and stumblin through her live shot? She was AWFUL! And I really don't think their coverage was better than 5's. 5 had their meteorologist out on locations talking about weather, and I'd rather have them out than reporters. They actually know what they're talking about. 5 totally covered the weather the best, they don't have to try to promote, people know. Plus 40's promotions are awfully edited. We'll sound the alarm?? We saw it first?? I'm sure. They need some help over there terribly.
I don't know about you but when all was said and done... we had about 5 and a half pigs go(the half was a little baby oink oink) sledding by our house.
I was so delighted and experiencing such glee that I forgot to snap a photo or get video. Rats!
I have my memories though and I look forward to the next snowfall.
"Souiee woooo wa wa woooo eeeeee yeeee haaa"!
All of the local stations looked good. Skoff explained it the best, and KNWA looked better during the morning show unlike the other stations who whose reporters were 'lost' to say the least.
KFSM had more meteorologists covering the storm and Lewis babysitting the station as usual. They spent more time on their 4 hour website updates than on cut-ins according to my TiVo.
40/29 was doing phoners with their reporters and Drew was in doing 5 min weather updates each half hour to remind everyone that it was still raining.
Is it just me or did anyone else miss Salser?
"Is it just me or did anyone else miss Salser?"
Obviously just you, especially after reading your KNWA homer critique...you must of been one of the few actually watching Dan Skoff.
Did anyone notice that during the afternoon cut-in's on KNWA their clock said AM instead of PM? Thats just so KNWA.
Anyone see Dan Skoff as the next Charles Salser in the making? He appears to have a pretty big head for his britches!
Can I get a WINTERRRRR STOOOOORRRRMMMM for Dan Skoff???
I know people that worked with him in Little Rock. Dan is by far the best weather talent in the market. The station he's at has a way to go though. He at least has their weather going in the right direction.
I think if anyone in this market (NWA) has more knowledge about meteorology, especially severe weather it's Dan. Nothing against Drew or Garrett or the others, but Dan knows his stuff. You can't get through OU's meteorology program being a slouch.
How many times can the Arkansas Razorback stories be overblown and beat to death? too much if you ask me.
honestly how many ways can you cover the Hogs?

Weather is boring? Not half as bad as Razorback Sports coverage!
Dan is by far the best weather talent in the market.
Based on what, you working at KNWA? What does he do that makes him the best...he's an average talent. A degree from a big name school is one thing, but how does that translate into viewers..it doesn't. You don't watch him and come away being impressed. He's average...and at a station that lacks any support, he has a huge hill to climb...
My point exactly. He is better than his station numbers. That is what you want so that you can grow. The other two have stronger stations and weaker talent. There is no where to go but down. The reason that KFSM has those numbers is that it has old day perception. I believe the gents name was John Candleror something like that.
....maybe the real reason you post is because you work for KNWA, and your smart enought to realize that your numbers are so poor...but Dan Skoff's mediocrity won't translate into numbers....you hope they will, but at the end of the ratings period, your station will still be last. You think he's better than he is....
If you believe that, you are completely out of touch with what is happening in the market.
KFSM dominates in weather because they put the most emphasis on weather.
Every station puts the most on weather
How many stations brought all their weather talent in up in NWA?
All of the stations were all weather last week. KFSM had more meteorologists, but about the same number of people in the field as the other stations. It was during book so by mid Dec we'll know who won the event.
KFSM had a new weather guesser this weekend. Who left?
Brannon Vickers.... no one left though... its an ADDITION! UH OH... SNOW!!!!!!
So that puts them up to 4 Met's, I guess?
Good guess.
With Garrett Lewis as their captain, KFSM continues to roll the weather competition.
4 weathermen/women now. A great move by the braintrust at KFSM.
Dan and Drew should quit TiVo'ing Garrett's forecast! (unless they want to learn from a master)
Okay, first of all, Garrett Lewis is not a babysitter or the captain. He's a meteorologist just like Drew and Dan. Who cares about weather right now? Snow's over! Who cares about the HOGS, they made it to a Bowl. Come up with something more interesting to talk about please.

What happened to Ginny Barksdale?
Who cares what happened to Ginny...do people really watch that channel?

There are no real viewers here so stop with it. Everyone here either works (or used to work) at a tv station.
"Who cares what happened to Ginny...do people really watch that channel?"
I work a morning show in the NWA market, and I must admit I wouldn't know Ginny if I saw her on the street.... OR anyone else at KNWA for that matter.
Actually, I DO NOT work in the media...I have a friend who does. I just like reading this b/c it's comical. I AM a viewer!

In other words, you are not a random, impartial viewer.
"Brannon Vickers.... no one left though... its an ADDITION! UH OH... SNOW!!!!!!"
I was hoping that weather girl at 5 was leaving. She walks straight towards the camera all the time and thats when I flip the channel. A friend was telling me about seeing her with a umbrella during some weather coverage and how she was acting like it was a hurricane and about to be blown away even though the trees behind her were barely moving. He said it reminded him of that reporter on the CBS show - The Class - except she was unbelievably more airbrained. Maybe that new guy will replace her after all. One can only hope!

Dear Irritated Viewer,
"Who cares what happened to Ginny?" That's heartless. She had a serious health scare. And, yes, I enjoyed watching her -- and I like KNWA, as most of us in NWA do. I hope she's doing well and coming back soon.

what's up with that new KFSM weather promo? Their meteorologists hold up giant animated snowflakes and point to the sky in awe. Who thinks of these things?
Hahaha... if I told you who thought of it I'd have to kill you ;)

What was the serious health scare? Please give details.

I think it looks better than 40's promos that's for sure. "We'll sound the alarm".... that's one super promo! They need to try something different like 5 is doing...
There is no chance that Brannon Vickers will replace Kendra Kent (for more reasons than you realize). Brannon was hired for weekend mornings and Kendra will continue doing weekend evenings. Kendra is doing an excellant job and Brannon is coming along nicely... NOW get back to your camera operator responsibilites.
You're right, I'd rather watch Zarras than Kendra.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Good move by KFSM hiring 4 degreed meteorologists. I'm not sure if the public cares though.
Yeah two of KFSM's "degreed" meteorologist's have a certificate from Mississippi State, real impressive!
That is not true.... lets go down the line.
Garrett Lewis - B.S. from MSU (actual 4 year degree)
Brad Flickinger - B.S. from OU
Kendra Kent - Masters in Meteorology from MSU
Brannon Vickers - B.S. from MSU (4 year)
Oh.... I forgot to mention Garrett has his AMS and NWA seal. Brad has his AMS/CBM seal.
Actually, my comment about who cares about Ginny was not meant badly. I'm just tired of people talking about her. They need to get on with their own lives and stop worrying about what happened to her. Just be happy she's healthy and stop gossiping!!!!!

If Ginny is not doing the morning news on KNWA, than who is?
--an out of market blogger
KFSM can have all the degrees and seals they want, but they'll never be able to forecast a WINTER STTTOOOORRRRMMM!!! like KHOG.
Long Live the infamous and always mysterious
"WINNNNNTTTTEEEERRRRR
SSTOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRMMMMM" dude or dudette!
BA HA HA
