KATV Jumps on Digital News Bandwagon

This from a tipster: "KATV has jumped into the digital-TV news game with "7 news now" service on its digital subchannel (7-2). Its simular to THV2 except lacking the PSA's, ads and taped stories. Mainly radar images, forcasts, and weathercams."

Yet they still can't add video to their Web site on a regular basis. How sad is that?

Or worse, not showing the full ABC HD schedule in HD .

Hey could they now update their web site as much as FOX16....No one in the market has a webpage like FOX16....They beat everyone on the web. Have you seen their hourly updates? If you are at work and want to know what is going on in our area...log on to FOX16.com

To bad KATV digital signal is only at low power...of course this is against FCC rules!

Is it on comcast or other cable outlets like THV2?

So you know FCC rules but you can't remember to use too instead of to? Well, I can see you were not smart enough to go into print journalism, but somehow you had time to memorize the FCC rules.

Fox16 webmaster and promo department must watch this blog like crazy. Way to go for getting a plug in every chance you get...even when the subject isn't about you...but if you only do one newscast a day, I guess you have time to monitor blogs.

Actually, it's true that no one in this market has a website like FOX 16. Everyone else's looks better. Unfortunately, every other TV station owned by ClearChannel has the same look to their website, even upn38tv.com. They should stop calling it ClearChannel and call it CookieCutter.

...and has anyone noticed that they've "adopted" THV's branding for their "Nowcasts"? THV has been using the phrase "News and Weather where you want it, when you need it" for years and FOX 16 says "News where you want it when you want it." Clever.

FYI, WJLA and KTUL (KATV's sister stations) have the same web design boilerplate.

It ain't just Cheap Channel

So do most of the New York Times stations (KFSM in Fort Smith, WREG in Memphis, KFOR in OKC).

Didn't they promise to have multiple channels two years ago?

I love KATV and I don't even work there! Just gonna say it! Everyone doesn't hate KATV....despite the impression you might get from reading this blog. I guess their people are too busy to fool with this. THVers clearly run to this blog in mass numbers. Is it part of your job descriptions to come on here and blast KATV daily??

The Fox Nowcast is a joke. Every heard of B-roll? How about a teleprompter. Kelly Kevin sounds half dead. How about a little energy, he's acting like the Nowcast is the last thing on earth he wants to be doing.

Keep believing the Nowcast is a joke. The number of hits say different. Keep attacking FOX16 and what they do...Numbers show a different story.

The title of this Blog should be changed to THV Lovefest!

Number of hits? Do tell. Since I don't work at FOX 16, unlike you, what are the hits like? According to Alexa.com you're way behind KATV and KTHV.

Do you actually watch the NowCast? It's terrible, cable access has more exciting programs.

Since the lanch of Nowcast in May the website has had over 1 million hits.

The Nowcast is designed to be a down and dirty quick news source for people at work.

Since it's the first in the market it is a work in progress and will evole as time passes.

I don't see any other station in this market trying to do hourly updates on the web.

Because they do a morning show, a noon, a five, and a six. Plus they update stories constantly on the web. Just because you have some talking head reading scripts (without prompter) doesn't make you more up to date.

Wow 1 million hits since May,(sarcasm) how many uniqe visits? And how many are actually watching the Nowcast.
More importantly what are you charging clients per impression?

I guess it ok than for them to not update their webs.

Just take a look at the amount of stories FOX16 puts on their web. There is no comparison.

Today FOX16 had the Sherwood murder at 10am.....The other stations posted THV 1:09pm...KATV 3:43pm...Kark doesn't care about the web. Oh they didn't bother putting them on their noon shows.

By the way more and more of the audience is moving to the web and today the FOX16 website has had over 3,000 hits at this point.

Have a great weekend

Fox 16 doing one hour of local news a day doesn't really compare to the other stations who do several hours of live news daily. Comparing the work output of the Fox newsroom to others is like comparing apples to oranges. So when you guys are ready to do news all day like the big guys and in the against same time periods you can compare to them then. If all you had to do all day is update the website, you should do more than hourly updates. How about some live newscasts during the day? Until then, you might want to sit down and take notes and think about what it is like to work at a real tv station.

1 million hits in 3 months.....that's nothing to crow about. KATV is easily doing twice that in a month, if not 3 times.

But I will give you the fact the audience is moving to the web. But reading national news that they can find anywhere is no the answer to getting an audience. You'll need to go hyper-local on the web.

That being said Fox 16 is on the right track with more of an emphasis on the web and when the tide turns you'll be way ahead. Until then, don't brag until you really know what you're talking about.

In case you don't know all fox station around the country do news at 9pm. Most do early cast and FOX16 will in the future. You have to walk before you run.

If you think the other station in this market are the big boys than you need to go find out the truth.

Katv has been a powerhouse in the past but has gotten fat and lazy.

Kthv use to be a last place station but made some great changes in the late 90's.

Kark..Al Sandbre(sp) kill this station. Nexstar will not do anything to help with their rep. I do believe Bob and Janice are a great anchor team.

FOX16 has done a great job for their short time on air. You can disagree all you want but they are launching a product the rightway.
They will add more shows when the time is right.

I don't understand all the hate towards FOX16. Most people here act as if they don't matter, but folks don't overlook them. They have numbers wheather like it or not.

Katv web doesn't get 3 million hits a month......

Please put down the crack.

If you call re-racking packages and run national stories and little local stories than I guess you can watch the big boys...

If you are a big boy just what are your 6am ratings? How is that paid program doing? And reruns at 6Pm...how hard is that to do? Must be a real challenge!

Who ever is doing the promotions at FOX16 needs to be careful...the NowCast are NOT updated every hour...I saw the same one at 2am, 3am and 4am...if it is not true then DON'T say it is updated every hour!!!

At 8:05 AM, July 11, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The FOX promo says that the Nowcast is update every hour "WHILE YOU ARE AT WORK"

But hey don't let the facts get in the way of your slam!

At 1:10 PM, July 11, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What about weekends?
What if I work second shift?

Shouldn't it just say updated during normal business hours and occasionally on holidays, if there's anybody in the building?

Let's be honest and tell the truth. It's only fair to the viewer and isn't the truth what every journalist strives to achieve?
