Shreveport Station Touts Accuracy of Weather Forecasts

The KTAL/Channel 6/Shreveport weather team has been rated in the top ten most accurate in the country...according to WeatheRate.  The announcement was made at the top of the station's 10pm newscast Monday. KTAL chief weather guesser Todd Warren said his team's forecast was voted the most accurate in the ArkLaTex...and the 6th most accurate in the nation. WeatheRate ranks 300 stations all across the US on their accuracy of their weather forecasts.

If a weather forecast is accurate, but no one sees it....

LMAO 10:34. Yeah, I agree on that one. I like Todd but I rarely watch KTAL.

Good for them. KTAL is still #3, but good for them.

Blogman, STOP SAYING "weather guesser"!!!!! It's f*#king annoying and played out.

Funny how KTAL does a cold open with the Todd the Weatherguy in their evening newscast. At least I remember that from watching once about a month back. I caught their newscast briefly and I have to say their news-set is awful... looks like someone looked at news-set design catalog and ordered one of everything and threw it together. TOOOOoo Much color, Toooo busy-looking and if Nick and Jacqui's deadpan prompter expressions are anymore flat, I'd swear they were from the old "Clutch Cargo" Cartoon series. Barf!

WeatheRate doesn't track anything. Whoever is gullible enough to buy their service in a market is the one they calls best. It's a joke.

Shreveport, LA: KTAL(NBC) is not on the list of Certified TV Stations on WeatheRate's current website.

Shreveport, LA is listed as a WeatheRated City, and the verification site is the Shreveport Regional Airport.

Is this another one of those bought awards Mike comes up with? There are hundreds of those things out there so every station can be #1 in something.

At 3:48 PM, March 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd Warren is the ONLY talent in Shreveport. His knowledge of weather events is unmatched at any other station. This award was not bought.

At 5:04 PM, March 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You paid money for it right? Therefore it was bought. They approached at least two stations in Little Rock before it was bought by Fox 16.

At 9:44 PM, March 13, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, so it is one of those fake awards after all? That figures.

At 11:50 AM, March 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why hasn't Mike put out a promo saying "We are #1 at being #3"?

At 10:06 PM, March 14, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Love Patrick Dennis early in the am and Todd Warren in the evening, just don't care for any of KTBS anymore!

More and more people feel the same way.

Personally think all local news-types are pretty weak, Shreveport TV market in general is lame, lame, lame.

At 10:45 PM, March 15, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They are just as accurate as the National Weather Service where the forecast comes from. All stations change the "Official Forecast" just a little to make the viewers think that they (the stations) are actually forecasting the weather.

At 1:23 AM, March 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Weather and sports are two things that ANY newscast could do without and just look at all the money management could save by not having them.

At 12:04 PM, March 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They can very easily do without sports, but not weather. Weather is a public service. Sports is not.

At 11:09 PM, March 16, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, it is a public service to rabid Razorback fans 24/7 365.
Pitiful.

That's kind of sad.

At 3:12 PM, March 19, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

". . . . This award was not bought."

Au contraire!

From WeatheRate's website:

"Can you tell me more about the WeatheRate rating process?

Every day, 365 days per year, WeatheRate employees review the four-day forecasts from local TV stations in major U.S. metropolitan areas. WeatheRate also obtains local observed weather data. The forecast and observed weather data are fed into our patented software, WeatherTracker II, which compares the forecast with the actual observed conditions. Through a series of mathematical calculations, we determine which TV stations have the best daily, weekly and monthly accuracy.

Then, every March, we offer our seal of approval to the TV station that provides the most accurate weather forecasts in our WeatheRated Cities." Stations that promote their WeatheRate seal of approval pay WeatheRate a fee.

KTAL management obviously failed to explain WeatheRate to Todd, and Todd obviously did not research what WeatheRate really is because contrary to what Todd said, there was no voting involved. KTAL paid to promote a seal of approval from WeatheRate, a for-profit business.

At 11:23 PM, March 19, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It is the best weather forecast you can get without calling the weather bureau and talking to them. I am impressed. They get it right all the time and they are the epitome of weather guessers in my book.

At 11:24 AM, March 20, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me get this straight. This makes KTAL's weather the most accurate weather in the market, but KTAL remains the #3 station in the market?

At 2:08 PM, March 20, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mind-boggling, ain't it? :|

At 5:27 PM, March 20, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Correct me if I'm wrong But isn't there a charge for submission in just about any awards contest? I know you have to pay money to be considered for an Emmy or an AP award. Doesn't mean you'll win though. But you gotta pay to be considered. Why is this any different?

At 6:07 PM, March 20, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Unlike AP and Emmy which are well known major awards, this is a b.s. award for a b.s. station that is still #3 in this mkt.

At 12:47 AM, March 21, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd's already got a swelled head, this is going to make it explode.
That would be compelling video.
And Mike can make a promo for it.

Now there's a name and department that should be outsourced to Little Rock.

At 12:21 PM, March 21, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'll admit that KTAL has gotten much better over the past year as far as signal quality, on-air appearance and "some" talent. Thank gawd they finally got rid of MeeShell! Couldn't stand watching or listening to her newscast butchering.
But now KTAL has settled into what a friend I know in the biz calls "all icing but no cake". They've worked so hard to appear like a bonifide news operation that they come across like an over-sweetened confection. All style and little substance. I suspect this is where they'll stay for sometime. Little if any depth and no experience newbies on watch. It looks like a college TV station with bells & whistles.

At 1:23 PM, March 21, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Spot on. Even with all of the improvements over the past year, I have seen BPCC News that looks as good, and on several newscasts, even better.

At 11:12 PM, March 21, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@12:21 PM March 21,2013

Nexstar has a history of getting KTAL going in the right direction then they ruin it. KTAL was really improving when Andy Pontz was ND. Then they fired Andy and everything went to crap. Things like that happen when you have a control freak micromanaging KTAL from corporate in Irving.

At 10:00 AM, March 22, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ah yes, the old "Blake effect." I remember it well.

At 11:38 AM, March 22, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think that's called: "Dork-o-Vision". Seriously that guy should be working for a church doing Sunday AM broadcast. No business doing real TV.

At 10:01 AM, March 23, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That KTAL weather "certified" logo looks like a hot-mess designed by someone who got a free copy of Corel Draw and started drinking too many Red Bulls. Very bad design, cheap-looking and quite amateurish in appearance. Oh...wait, we're talking Nexstar/KTAL ...nevermind. Makes perfect sense now.

At 1:53 PM, March 23, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Dork-o-Vision?" I'll have to remember that one.

At 8:41 PM, March 27, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I see what you are talking about. I caught the 6:00 PM tonight and that "certified" logo is the worst cut and paste job I have seen in years.

At 8:34 PM, March 28, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Looks more like a "certified piece of shit" logo tossed together on someone's home PC

Certified POS Now that's funny.

At 7:05 PM, April 03, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not to change the subject but I had to laugh at seeing KTAL's local image shots. They had their main anchor standing if front of the Confederate Soldier Memorial at the Caddo Parish Courthouse talking about "Local Politics" as part of their local image campaign. Uh..hey assholes in KTAL Promo dept... do you think some of your key demos in the black community might bristle at seeing the Confederate Memorial in the shot?
Geez does anybody think much about what they're doing at KTAL?

At 7:14 PM, April 03, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The head of KTAL's promotions department, who approved that spot, is black.

At 10:45 PM, April 03, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well he must be an Effing moron to miss that big mistake. There's been so much controversy about that monument in the news, you'd have to really not be paying attention to fail the grasp the significance.

At 11:40 PM, April 03, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's not a new or recent news story. People complain about the confederate monument about this time year, every years, for the past 30 years, and it's still there.

At 9:31 AM, April 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well it has been brought up in jury selection on some capital cases in Caddo Courthouse as having some affect on jurors. Defense attorneys have used it in requesting change-of-venue to some degree. So it's become more of a big deal than the typical story of the past 30 years as you put it.

At 1:03 PM, April 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Less then 10% of those change of venues were granted.

At 1:11 PM, April 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

WTF-ever! The thing is the monument was / is a dumb-ass backdrop for promos in a city with the majority populace is Af-American.

At 1:20 PM, April 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You mean a majority black city in a majority white parish right?

Besides why watch 6 anyway? Even with all the money they spent last year they are still the #3 station in this mkt. No one takes that place seriously.

So 1:20 PM, you think it's alright to do something that may be offensive to a few people as long as they're not in the majority? Hmmm... seems like faulty logic in this day and age. Especially in Mass Communications/News business.

At 8:50 PM, April 04, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Does KTAL still use 10 year old footage of Todd Warren in some of his current wx promos?

At 1:34 PM, April 05, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@8:50 PM
Are you talking about the old "weather wise" promos from the riverfront when Todd still had brown hair? I'm sure they are. Those promos started running back in 2002 or 2003 when I was in high school. They were still running after I graduated from college. Now they did update the graphics, but still used that same old video. I did see some newer ones sometime last year, but the video they used is like 3 or 4 years old.

At 1:54 PM, April 05, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

A bit off topic but does anyone have an update on MeeShell? Where did she land or is still looking for the next sucker...er... job opportunity in TV?

At 2:09 PM, April 05, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

She's still here. Assume she's still with Ramon. Who knows. He may have kicked her to the curb again.

At 5:01 PM, April 05, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well we haven't seen her pop up with Ivan Smith spots. Guess ol' Ivan wised up perhaps? My guess is she'll land in some glorified quasi-gov agency gig as "PR" ;)

At 10:25 AM, April 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The public dose not like her, and most organizations are unwilling to take on that liability.

At 10:48 AM, April 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's amazing how much she has "changed" since she first arrived in Shreveport. When she first started at KSLA, I was impressed and tuned in. Here was someone articulate and pleasant to watch. Then after she left KSLA she started appearing in TV spots and seemed to over exaggerate words and expressions. I thought it was just bad direction from a commercial producer. Then she was on KTAL and she continued to get worse and worse. I think I tuned in once to when she was announcing the news while sucking on a lozenge and slurring and screwing up. Some serious issues there. I was amazed she was allowed to stay on as long as she was.

At 1:24 PM, April 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

At least you didn't have to work with Michelle. We had to sit there and listen to her butcher the script show after show. Day after day. It was painful. It was so bad we wished we still had Rick Boone. Plus she was off more then any anchor or reporter at any of the stations I've ever worked. Now you see why they brought in Jacque. Two diva's enter. One diva leaves.

At 1:52 PM, April 06, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Broadcast B___ches seem to get an attitude. Not to sound racist though but I've worked with many afamerican female anchors and it seems they can get really full of themselves. It's as if they think they're bulletproof and can act, do, say whatever they want because management is such a pussy in dealing with them. It's only after things reach a certain level and then they get a big severance to go away quietly and sign market non-compete/non-disclosures. It happened at two stations I worked for here in this market. Amazing really.

At 10:13 AM, April 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Michelle, Sylvia, Sharon, Gwen. Where should we start?

At 12:30 PM, April 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL has started running a new "braggadocio" weather seal ad.
Todd Warren, Valedictorian, Class of 1! FACT: ALL weather forecasts originate from the NWS. The stations just change it around a little to sell advertising.

KTAL issued no warnings about the early Easter morning storms that occurred in the northern portion of the ARK-LA-TEX. That area with hit with high winds, torrential rain, hail, thunder and lightning. KTBS had radar on. Thanks, KTBS!!

KTAL, eat your seal!

At 4:16 PM, April 07, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They started running those spots a week or two ago. I like Todd and Patrick, but just not enough to tune in.

At 11:05 AM, April 08, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That "weather-seal" is really annoying and cheap looking. Looks like something my kid came up with on her PC.

At 1:09 PM, April 08, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Doesn't it thought? So much for quality control.

At 4:32 PM, April 08, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I get a chuckle out of their weather promos shot just outside the KTAL bldg in their parking lot. Nice view of the back of the convenience store and street. What's next? A standup in front of the dumpster?

At 8:48 PM, April 08, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To late. We've been doing that for years. Some of our old promos ran longer then the employees in them worked here.

At 10:23 AM, April 09, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just wondering but does anyone have reporter-applicants read news copy or watch their demo-tapes before they get hired at KTAL? Not to sound harsh but some on-air reporters have a tough time pronouncing and spitting the words out. Or is this by design?
I always thought enunciation was important in broadcasting.

At 11:43 AM, April 09, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They did in the past but who knows what they are doing now. Some of KTAL's current and former reporters over the past few years are in their first or second broadcasting job out of J school. They need remedial speech, and voice and diction classes.

At 1:22 PM, April 09, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then please send them to BPCC as soon as possible. They have plenty of speech and voice and diction professors to work with them.

At 12:04 PM, April 10, 2013, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The biggest problem with local reporters is that in dealing with public figures, they don't know how to axe the right qwershtuns.
