So Many Loose Strings in LR

In watching Little Rock tv news there are so many empty news positions.  At KATV, they have yet to name a permanent weekend anchor after the departure of Heather Crawford.  KATV still is utilizing reporters to  fill in the gap.  One can't help but wonder what the delay is.

Meanwhile over at THV, News 11 as they are now calling it, they have yet to fill the news director position, a reporter or two position and one wonders if they plan on hiring another anchor following the death of anchor Matt Turner.  Of course I don't think they would consider hiring another anchor until the ND position is filled.

Why should KATV bother hiring a permanent weekend anchor when the other stations are so horrible?

Also, KTHV does not need any more reporters, just decent management.

I'm actually curious to see how katv's weekend numbers look. They seem to be using their two weakest reporters talent-wise. Neither one of those girls can get through a story without stumbling. But it might not matter that much since they got by with Pam for so long and it didn't seem to have much of an effect.

How bad will it be if KATV wins the weekends with back up anchors? I'd watch either the red head or Jeannette over KARK or THV any day.

I know he can't get the job because he's a guy and won't sign a contract, but why wouldn't they ask Roger to "permanently fill in" while they find their girl of the future?

At 4:34 PM, November 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

From what I hear, they found someone but have to wait until after sweeps because of contract issues with the person's current station. I expect you'll see a new face a few weeks into December.

Anybody know anything about THV's ND opening? I feel like I'm watching lost children every time I turn the station on...it's kind of sad. They were catching up and improving the product and then all that momentum came to a crashing stop.

What about the train wreck at 5 on thv. Dang everybody is out of kilter. Miscues. Wrong video. Sara fortner stumbling over every word. None of the anchors could get it right.

I have to say that I've never seen such crappy work from TV stations here in my life.

Too much concern from the "top" about how much money to spend and not enough on QUALITY.

THV's morning show has gone to the crapper. I used to enjoy their morning show, but now I cannot stand it. 1.2 minutes of news and then Tom is at some stupid school or restaurant talking about pancakes for the next 25 minutes.

BORING BORING BORING.

Complete waste of time.

Also, why bother telling everyone where the speed traps are? Nobody gives a s**t about that anyway... drive down Kavanaugh sometime and note the morons doing 55 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Ch. 4's morning team is just creepy. The dark haired girl looks like a vampire ready to strike any second and the light bouncing off the bald noggin of what's his name is pretty silly. And what's up with the snarky weather dude? It's weather, not a game show.

Frankly, I cannot stand Ch 7's news.... period. (any time day or night they suck).

Same news as the night before, the same delivery in the same order as the night before. The same video clips, same worn out catch phrases.

7 does not have a news director... they have a hateful, spite riddled Engineer who only wants to fire people so he can get a raise.

I honestly think that if 16's news department was not about to go away they should have done a morning show. If they had played their cards right they could have taken the morning ratings by storm as long as Donna stayed out of it. She sucks. Can't stand her snarky proud black woman attitude.

As far was station website's go, I have to say 16's website is the best. Too bad that will be going away. I can find real news stories easily and quickly on 16's website. THV's website is a nightmare to navigate and 7's is waaaaaay to convoluted. As far as "Arkansas Matters"... crap, crap and more crap.

So there. I feel better now.

Well I can't stand Donna's snarky proud black woman attitude either. But you lost me on the rest... especially about 7's news director. He's no engineer... that would be an insult to engineers. But he does have them flying higher than they ever have flown as far as ratings.

FOX16 should have a morning show but our GM would never fight for us. He's a weak manager and it shows with this the sale. Had he been a leader and fought for a morning show FOX16 might have been sold to a different company and still have life.

Donna's proud black woman attitude? What attitude is she supposed to have? Thanks for the racism. And 9:20am I don't know what station you work for but it isn't Fox 16 if you think our GM is weak. Chuck has always fought for us. Werent you at the meeting when they first announced the sale? It was clear that it pained him to have to tell us the news. He has always tried to raise the black cloud hanging over the station and keep us optimistic. hes been open about it all. What do you want him to do, buy us back from Nexstar? Get real.

I'd put some proud white man attitude out there to balance things out... but somehow I think you'll find white pride racist too.

Is Katherina the new Michelle Rupp of KATV? Always passed over by less talented people and finally leaves!!!!!

At 7:10 AM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Donna T is a great Emmy Award winning journalist and news anchor with over 25 years of experience. She is by no means a "snarky proud Black woman with an attitude." She is however a very confident, beautiful, accomplished & professional 55 year old woman who just happens to be of Black ancestry. I've worked with Donna, and she is a delight in all aspects. I wasn't born and raised in AR or the South, but it is really sad how small-minded and backwards some people in AR are. The majority of people in AR and the South in general are enlightened, but the few that aren't make all Arkansans look very bad.

At 7:28 AM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know what she's like off air and have never met her. So I can't attest to the snarky black attitude. What I can say is I cannot stand her as an anchor. Absolutely horrid. Laughable. Faux talent.

At 7:29 AM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Thank you for the above comment about Ms. Terrell. She is by far the best anchor LR news has ever had. Her latest Emmy agrees with my statement.

People in AR aren't used to seeing a beautiful, attractive, confident Black woman. They're used to blond hair, blue eyed, plain jane with no personality.

In other news (turns head) Beth Hunt comes in a close second for Best Anchor in AR.

@2:05 There was no one in this market less talented than Michelle Rupp, not to mention the worst attitude and work ethic I've ever seen. Kat is hard working and a delight off air. Too bad once the camera turns on she turns to stone.

@7:28-That is only your opinion, and at the end of the day your opinion doesn't mean a whole damn of a lot. Donna's 25+ years of experience, numerous Emmys' and other awards speak for themself.

Since Matt Turner's unfortunate passing, is KTHV looking to replace him or what? What's the deal with that entire situation and Craig O'Neal?

At 12:21 PM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

THV needs a news director that is familiar with the Little Rock market. If they hire somebody from out of state they are making a huge mistake. KATV has local folks in charge. That is why they are doing so well.

At 12:51 PM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No! Run FAR AWAY from anyone in this market! If they were worth anything, they'd already be employed by one of the stations. One of the 'candidates' from around here is trying to wiggle his way into the station by sucking up to everyone there, but it ain't gonna work.

At 3:37 PM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

THV doesn't need another anchor, they need a sports director. Their sports segment is by far the worst in LR.

At 4:04 PM, November 14, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I totally agree with 8:28 about THV's morning show. It's absolutely the worst. Tom's awkward live segments are terrible (actually everything about Tom is terrible) Alyse isn't good at all and always seems to smile inappropriately. She's also beginning to look like Liz Massey.

Also can't they just tell us where the police are hiding? Do they need an actual poorly spoken cop to do that EVERY morning. The morning show never seems to do news at all. It's just a long, stupid infomercial about breakfast, cops and a lame cat.

How do you start a new thread on this website?

Funny how you slam Tom, Alyse, (and Joey) but not snaggle toothed Ashley Blackstone. You are obviously either Ashley's bestie, Ashley, or someone who was overlooked for the morning anchor position. Someone please get her a makeover and a dentist stat. It's a shame when I have to turn to Melinda Mayo because Ashley and her teeny bopper clothes and horrible teeth and complexion are on the tv. She's better suited for a radio job IMO.

15 year THV fan

Creeping out of the shadows, I must ask if you people have EVER seen a MAJOR market morning show? NOTHING but anchors talking amongst themselves and goofy live shots! You can't hardly generate NEW news, when nothing happens around here other than the frequent shooting. I guess everybody thinks they can be a News Director better than anyone who HAS the job!

At 11:42 AM, November 15, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Longer, yes. That doesn't mean your qualified to do anything just that you were hired first. Hotter? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Personally I don't like the anorexic look she's got going. More talented? Not even close....did you see KatherIna do the show or try to anchor the weekend. It was a train wreck.

It does not take any genius or great talent to be a talking head reading the news. Each newscast should have two anchors, a beautiful woman and a handsome man with a deep resonant voice. The only qualifications should be to be pretty and pleasantly personable, and be able to read and speak well.

It's a "group" of people who like to think that Alyse is the next big thing who is going to go "national" any minute even though she has limited talent, no on screen chemistry with anybody and seems to be on the Liz Massey workout plan.

At 9:38 PM, November 18, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I give her 3 more years before she goes to a top 10 market. She's pretty, can read the prompter, and is young. That's the future of journalism! In all seriousness though, THV News Today 11 (or whatever the hell they are now) would be better off nixing the ditzy blonde from the morning show and letting Tom and Alyse take care of it. It's kind of like Matt Mosler on channel 4, she doesnt add anything to the show.

I've watched the ditzy blonde who picks up the slack when others drop it. I've watched the ditzy blonde stay and pull long days when some walk out and go home after the cameras are off. I am not sure about all of the awards the ditz has won, but I think somewhere she has an Emmy, and a Murrow award, and several other nominations. Yep, she is a ditz all right, and oh, before you say it, I am NOT her. I am just a keen observer who sees and reports the facts.

I know exactly what's coming so let me state now - I'm not Ashley and I don't know her.

I'm with you 7:36 and 8:33, and I am not Ashley either. The facts are the facts, and maybe the facts can't be denied,so somebody resorts to personal slamming. She works hard, seems to love the job, and tries to produce a good product. A ditz or a dumb blonde-hardly. No she is not the Queen Bee, but she is the worker bee. And the worker bee usually accomplishes more and has integrity.

At 11:39 AM, November 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ashley, prove it to us on air. You don't need to get on here and talk yourself up. The proof is in the pudding!

11:39, You are right about one thing the proof is in the pudding;(your trite overworked phrase not mine)she proves every day on air and off the air at work that she is the worker bee and not the Queen Bee. Anyone with eyes in their head can see that. And 11:39, your wrong about one thing, I am not Ashley, so I can't prove it on air. Sorry, and that is the truth, but you won't believe it.

This is just funny now. Ashley and Liz both have the most annoying defenders. If one bad thing is said about them you feel the need to throw a record of their awards in our faces. Awards don't make you talented or watchable on air. Good riddance to both of them!

8:44 AM, November 13, 2012

Channel 7 has seen some improvement under their new news director. But they are far from having their highest ratings ever! That station used to be a REAL market leader. It's that legacy that helps maintain their position. So a big kudos to the people who built it when their wasn't a blog to give them credit.

At 4:10 PM, November 19, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Awards for journalism don't make an anchor watchable or talented. Then pray tell what does make an anchor or reporter talented and watchable as a journalist? I thought they were given journalism awards because they had stories and broadcasts that evidenced that that they were talented and watchable. I am not sure you can reason real well.

I'm so sick of the crappy jobs these TV stations do in regards to news.

There are too many "personal interest" stories, too many diversions to the weather garden for hot dogs, stupid designer tips and traffic crap.

I want NEWS. I want to know what's going on here in Little Rock and around the State and then I want to know what's going on in the US and the rest of the world. Weather next, but stop the smarmy weather guessers' BS, just give me the facts.

I'm glad that some of these stations get involved in helping the community, but I don't want to hear about it every 5 minutes. That's not news, that's PR.

And frankly, sports has to be the biggest snorefest on TV. Want to know your scores? Just go to the web or one the 200 sports radio stations.

I don't care where Tom is this morning, I don't care what Wendy's favorite website is. I could really care how much weight the old lady weather guesser has gained in the last week on KATV.

"Just the facts ma'am"

I want NEWS, not Fluff.

NEWS, dammit.

At 9:00 AM, November 27, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with you. But with the 2+ hour marathon of news everyone is doing nowadays, there is not enough news to fill it all. And if there was, there would not be enough staff to actually cover it. Stations across the board have slashed their employee budgets. So you end up with these fluff segments to fill the time.

If I were you I'd stick to the internet for local news and weather, and watch your favorite CNN, msnbc, or foxnews channel for the national stuff. Because it's not going to get better, as a matter of fact, it's probably going to get worse.
