Shreveport Station Responds to Where its Missing Anchor Is

KTAL/Channel 6/Shreveport has posted a response on its facebook page to questions viewers have had concerning the debut of the new anchors and the absence of Michelle White.  Here's the post:

Wanted to catch everyone up on what’s going on in the newsroom. Many of you have noticed our new anchor Jacque Jovic, who debuted on NBC 6 News this week. Wanted to catch everyone up on what’s going on in the newsroom. Many of you have noticed our new anchor Jacque Jovic, who debuted on NBC 6 News this week. The feedback on her contribution to the newsroom has been great (which doesn’t surprise us) but it has brought up the question of ‘where’s Michelle?’
Michelle is off this week, but will be back on Monday. When she returns she will be moving to new hours here at KTAL, and will be working during the day. Michelle and Nick will continue to anchor our newscasts at 5 and 6, with Jacque and Nick anchoring the 10. As you can imagine, Michelle is looking forward to having evenings off for the first time in several years.

We hope you’ll join us in welcoming Jacque on board at NBC 6 News, as well as wishing Michelle the best as she moves to more ‘normal’ hours.

By the way, you may also have noticed our new AM co-anchor Dan Jovic, who has joined Leslie Draffin and Patrick Dennis on NBC 6 Today. And yes you’re correct—Dan and Jaque have the same last names. They are married, and are enjoying settling into life in the ArkLaTex together.

M. M., thanks for the update.

Well it's funny how they didn't make any mention of MeeShell being "off" at the top of the past few evening newscasts. Guess the on-air staff didn't get the memo.

We never tell the viewers when someone is on vacation. Someone just fills in and thats it.

Well I've heard U guys say:
"Nick is off tonight" when he was off and before all the new anchor hires, Nick mentioned when Michele had the night off. We don't need their itinerary. But given the error of omission, it sure fueled some rumors out here in Blogger-land.

10:02 "Blogger-land" is rumor central.

Big-time! But even Blogger-land reveals elements of truth about the local TV culture.

Anybody else notice how the KTAL newset has migrated its color scheme to include more reddish-hues? Like they almost seem to have borrowed the idea from KTBS's red theme. Coincidence or imitation?

KTAL's set is a copy of their Nexstar sister station KARK's set in Little Rock.

Jacque was on today's 5 P.M. newscast reporting from the State Fair wearing a printed peacock feather top! Work it, NBC gal!

At 9:46 PM, October 25, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Gal"? People don't use the term "gal" here. That's a term people from other regions use.

(1a) What are you referring to as "other regions"?

(2) How do you know that I am not from one of those "other regions" visiting family in this region?

(3) Perhaps you should write a script of do(s) and don't(s) for comments on this blog.

(4) How rude to critique a compliment---JACQASS!!!

People in the south do not use the term gal. That is a commonly used term in the Midwest and Northeast.

Dunno about that, I'm from Texas and the missus is from Louisiana. We use Guy and Gal a lot.

I saw several newscast this week and noticed Jacque is clearly trying to take over. She reminds of Sylvia Rachel, Sharon Frame, and Liz Swain. None of whom are in broadcasting any more.

Just trying to assert herself quickly I'm sure. And I'm sure KTAL mgrs would love to find a reason to have her become the main female anchor at 5 & 6 too. Just wait until the fall audience cumes & ratings come out. With all the changes at KTAL, there will be a definite uptick in points and certain on-air talent won't be able to hide behind overall ratings mediocrity no-mo!

There is truth in your first sentence "Just trying to assert herself quickly I'm sure."

According to Merriam-Webster, assert means to state or declare positively and often forcefully or aggressively.

It is positively obvious to viewers that Jacque is aggressively trying to force herself into the 5 & 6 anchor position currently held by Michelle.

KTAL has lost some viewers at 10 since the addition Jacque and subtraction of Michelle.

I won't be watching KTAL at 5 & 6 if Jacque is successful in her mission to fully insert herself into Michelle's postion.

Jacque,

I am not Meeshell......

I am not Michelle White Lafitte.

I am a KTAL viewer and fan of Michelle Lafitte.

A fan haha. Who the heck can stand watching MEEEEESHEEEEEEEEEEEEl stress every word. Liked her at KSLA but something happened on the way to ktal. No doubt KTAL gave her the job just because she's black and could possibly pull in a couple of loyal black followers.

I'm sure 6 will be happy to lose you as a viewer. Because for every 1 viewer they lose for booting Michelle, they will gain 4 other for booting her and putting in Jacque.

MeeShell is starting to show some concern, seems like she's been tightening her delivery a bit more lately. Maybe some of the recent new-hires has her on her toes. After the Nov book comes out, we'll see how the newbies have helped out the other timeslots and compare where the 5 & 6 are percentage-wise.
Lafite, I'd be doing some major sucking up right about now.

At 12:11 PM, October 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So you noticed that too? Yeah, there has been a noticeable improvement in Michelle's delivery. They should have brought in some competition years ago but Cummings was in the way.

At 2:36 PM, October 30, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Cummings was a dimwit as far as TV GM's go. His Ivan Smith ties were the main reason for hiring MeeShell. I still cringe when I remember her TV Spots airing on other stations during the newscast. Anywhere else you'd hear GM's say WTF?!! But not at KTAL.

At 9:57 AM, October 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, those Ivan Smith spots were very cringe worthy, but it's not like there isn't a 30 year history of various local tv and radio personalities doing commercials for businesses that air on other stations.

You are partially correct. I cannot stand to watch Michelle read the news.

I sit comfortably in a chair and watch Michelle read the news.

I do not have the genetics to classify my ethnicity as black.

While some so-called "news people" have blurred the lines between commercial talent and news talent at times, the practice is not acceptable while working as a "news anchor". The basic tenets of being classified as a "news person" in any capacity is that you cannot be a paid spokesperson / talent and be a news person in the same market.

That's a conflict as it would harm your brand as an unbiased "news person". The common (sense) business practice is that if you're paid to represent the news ops at a station, you aren't allowed to be a paid talent in any other capacity. It conflicts with news which is meant to be unbiased and accurate without being a "paid-for message".

Let's face it, MeeShell is a cartoon, even with her tightened delivery, she sucks. Maybe her delivery may work better on a radio newscast where you don't have to watch her but her delivery sounds forced and unnatural. Sure, some TV news-readers have over-the-top vocal skills (watch HLN news-reader like Robin Meade and Natasha Curry and you'll know what I'm talking about) But a clear, more natural delivery is preferred over these broadcast-speak deliveries. I thought that went out of style after Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather retired.

Any news reader I know would take it as a compliment to read a critique that states the news reader has a delivery similar to news icons Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather.

With the proper speed on the prompter Michelle has no problems reading the news--sounds very professional and strong.

Neither Michelle nor Jacque will ever sound like Robin Meade and Natasha Curry.

Jacque could use some animation.

Walter Crumbcake and Dan Blather had the old-style, static and over-emphasized delivery reminiscent of radio announcers. Considering that both Walter and Dan got their start in radio (as did a majority of broadcasters back then) it was only natural for them to keep doing things they way they did before until more people started liking the delivery styles of Peter Jennings who actually wrote his copy in his own vocal style. PJ was a solid journalist in the field of TV news having cut his teeth in the London bureau and almost exclusively covering the Middle-East before other networks. Anyone who thinks todays "News Prompter-Readers" should sound anything like Crumbcake and Blather... are ready for prune juice-cocktails and the rocking chair, 'cuz such speaking styles are horribly out-of-date for todays television styles.

No one in our local talent pool could make it at the national level.

At 11:50 AM, November 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

True, but the local "talent" would not made it here just 10 years ago.

At 1:41 PM, November 02, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Heck, I'm surprised at some of the local talent from the past 20 yrs or so. As long as you had a pulse and could read without making too many mistakes, you had a job. KTBS staffers were mediocre unambitious, often overpaid anchors who would get kicked to the curb as scapegoats. KSLA anchors stuck around because they weren't going anywhere. KTAL back then, 'nuff said. Those with any ability left the market and did other things.
