KTAL to Debut New 10pm Co-anchor Tonight

KTAL/Channel 6/Shreveport will debut tonight a new co-anchor for its 10pm newscast.  Jaci Jovic will be anchoring aside Nick LaFave.  Jaci's husband Dan debuted this morning on the station's morning news program. Someone delivered cupcakes to the newsroom to welcome Jaci to the team.

Just a side note, Michelle Lafitte was MIA from the evening newscasts.

Meeshell, where are you?

So I noticed tha Jacque was co anchoring the 6 today and neither Nick or Jacque said " Michelle is off tonight" in the intro. Michelle was still in the promo though. So I'm guessing Michelle is slowly being nudged out. Good Luck Jacque. Keep your head up Michelle; people switched to KTAL just to see you when nobody would waste their eyesight on 6. How people soon forget!

As far as KTAL anchor teams go, MeeShell is the weakest link. Looks like she is about to get voted off the island.

I'm impressed with Jacque and Dan. They just jumped in a ran with it. I'm even more impressed KTAL actually recruited some good anchors, and husband & wife team at that.

I didn't hear anything.

I read the following article:

Shreveport’s KTAL Expands On-Air Roster
By Kevin Eck on September 26, 2012 3:44 PM

Viewers of KTAL in Shreveport, LA will be seeing some new faces on the air in the coming weeks.

The NBC affiliate’s morning news team will add husband and wife anchors Dan and Jacque Jovic from WJW in Cleveland.  Jacque will also join veteran anchor Michelle White at 10 p.m.

“In seven months we have gone from a two person morning show to what will be a five person show,” KTAL vice president and general manager Mark McKay told TVSpy.  “Additionally we will add a seasoned anchor to the desk while retaining Michele White at the station”.

The station will also add  Stephanie Claytor, who will join from KTVO in Ottumwa, IA, and Kimberly Rusely, who comes over from cross-town station KSLA, as reporters.

McKay told TVSpy their start dates were still “TBD”.

1:30 PM Maybe you should ask people who work at KTAL. Everyone I talked to said Jacque was co-anchoring @10:00 and Michelle was co-anhoring @5:00 and 6:00. It was also discussed on previous threads.

I think KTAL needs an af-american anchor in the mix and for the moment it's MeeShell. But you don't have to be a media genius to see (and hear) that her on-air performance ain't what it used to be when she was at KSLA. Something ain't right and viewers pick up on that.

At 4:05 PM, October 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL already has two. First Michelle and now Jacque.

At 5:35 PM, October 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

@1:57, you are correct. Michelle use to be the best on air talent in the city, but her on air performance for the past two years has been horrific. What happened was she let her personal life interfere with her professional life and it became a bit too much for her. I felt like the only reason Channel 6 hired her was 1. they believed that she could attract more African-American viewers and 2. the relationship that she had with the people at Ivan-Smith!! Little did they know, that Michelle's credibility within the African-American community wasn't all that stellar! She started trying to regain some of it when everyone else had turned their backs on her. You could clearly see that her on air co-workers were not comfortable with her in the position that she was in and their demeanors and facial expressions said it all. Sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone and move on. There's an old saying "you reap what you sow". Karma is nothing to play with nowadays.

However, 1:44 PM, amazingly you got your knickers in a twist when an article was posted which quoted the general manager. A correction was posted before you posted your inane, silly, unintelligent, absurd, ridiculous, frivolous, and/or stupid suggestion "for me to ask people who work at KTAL." I do not live in Shreveport, Louisiana. I do not live in Louisiana. THIS SITE IS ON THE WORLD WIDE WEB.

There was no harm in posting the information that Nick and Michelle will be handling the 5 and 6 PM newscasts, and Nick and Jacque will be handling the 10 PM newscasts. KTAL affirmed the information today.

I was in town last week and caught some of the newscasts. Dan and Jacque are great. They would do very well in my current market. I still can not believe KTAL is this good after being so bad for decades. Sure this will do great things for KTAL's ratings. Never thought I would live to see KTAL look better then KSLA. In case you are new to the Ark-La-Tex, it is part of the United States of America.

Ark-La_Tex viewers have the same freedom of choice (changing the channel or saving electricity and turning off the television) as the viewers in Ohio.

Time marches on and so will the Jovics---eventually.

At 4:51 PM, October 23, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jacque Jovic needs to know her role and learn to co-anchor with Nick. Nick has been at KTAL much longer than Jacque. Jacque should not impose herself in Nick's banter with viewers about future KTAL events.

Also, it would help if Jacque did not read like someone on autopilot without comprehension of what is being read.

Anyone remember "Where's Waldo"? Jacque has a "Where's Jacque?"version that she performs nightly during the 5 P.M. and 6 P.M broadcasts. Jacque gets her 5 P.M. and 6 P.M. camera time by positioning herself in different areas of the Content Center doing various superfluous activities behind the KTAL reporters who are reporting live during the 5 P.M. and 6 P.M. broadcasts.

Oh give it time. Jacque will eventually lose her luster and I predict there will be shots taken at her by Jan. 1st. Like most TV-Anchor/Prompter Readers... it's all about style over substance. On-air types are selected by management based on how badly folks would like to see them naked. Always been that way, it'll never change. Short of showing up drunk and cussing on-air, getting popped for DUI and gaining weight, they are golden.

KTAL will always have its share of drama as will any local TV station in this market. It's typical of the business they're in, lots of ego to go around wrapped-up with insecurity on a daily basis. So typical.

At 12:20 PM, October 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

MeeShell? Yuk!!!
Jacque is better although she could loosen up a bit more. Of course the prompter operators at KTAL are a bit fast on the pedal and I'm sure the writing is confusing for the pace needed.

At 10:56 PM, October 31, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

12:20 PM, October 31, 2012

Thank you for explaining why Michelle struggles at times to read the prompter.

I always thought that the KTAL prompter operators were sabotaging Michelle by being a bit fast and/or a touch slow on the prompter pedal.

With the proper speed on the prompter Michelle has no problems reading the news--sounds very professional and strong.

At 1:55 PM, November 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No...part of the problem is MeeShell herself. The prompter operators can't keep up with her weird pacing and overrrrrrrrr EEeeennuUUNNNCEEEatting that really is tough to set a pace tooooOOOOoooo.
Could be eye issues or brain to mouth control. Who knows.
There was a time when MeeShell had a smoother delivery back at KSLA but that was when she was new to the market and trying to make a good impression.

At 2:31 PM, November 01, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If the prompter operators are the problem... they don't Nick, Leslie, Jacque or Dan have any issues? Or the weekend people for that matter? Unless it's some big conspiracy, then it's just evidence that MeeShell literally can't read the words in front of her.

FWIW... KTAL is running quite a few image spot/promos for election coverage and I'd say the ratio is 3-1 for every Nick & Jacque at 10 to Nick & MeeShell. Of course the 10 o'clock would have the latest election coverage but during an election...seems like the station would have ALL ON-AIR STAFF ON DECK for the entire evening. Am I missing something here?

At 12:18 AM, November 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KTAL is the last station I would watch for election coverage. The results are slow and by the time they post them it's outdated incorrect information. Both KTBS and KSLA have the most accurate up to date information, and beat KTAL hands down on election coverage.

At 1:23 PM, November 05, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well considering how much KTAL has improved itself over the past 6 months, I may just give them a shot and take a look at their election coverage. Maybe we'll all be pleasantly surprised and maybe not.

KTAL election coverage wasn't half bad. Some screw ups with graphic order but KSLA at 6 had some reporter on skype that was looking around confused while up on air plus the quality was awful. I thought overall K-tal didnt do too bad.

At 10:14 AM, November 07, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well there is so much room for improvement anything looks better.
I saw that Skype thing on KSLA myself. That did look bad. I still do not agree with using Skype in broadcasts. It freezes up and looks terrible most of the time. In many cases doing a phoner would have been better. KTAL is on the rise and KSLA is in major decline. I can see them swapping places and KSLA becoming #3.

At 10:32 AM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since there were only a few local elections Tuesday I did not watch any local coverage, and so far, everyone I talked to did the same. Have to catch them next time there is a local election so I can judge for myself.

Evidently I am not as observant as I used to be. I drive past KTAL all the time and realized Thursday they had changed their signs in front of the building to match the new graphics package. The signs look good, now they just need to do a face lift on that 1962 facade or move to a better location.

At 10:36 AM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have to agree, the KSLA televised Skype report from a campaign party location on election night was worse than bad, IT WAS HORRIBLE!! It made some of the early satellite uplinks from the 80's look like High Def.
Holy Smokes!! What were they thinking??!! KSLA has been in a slow but steady decline over the past few years. I can see some of KSLA's audience share migrating to KTAL.

KTAL's coverage wasn't bad with the exception of MeeShell's weird live interview at John Fleming's re-election HQ party. Has MeeShell been in a car accident recently? I'd swear she acted like she has been recovering from concussion. And since when does your primary co-anchor do location election coverage? I know she likes to schmooze with S'port upper-crusties but this is something that stands out as de-emphasizing her role as primary on-air talent.

The KTAL pre-taped field reports fed as if they were "live" even though they weren't didn't fool anyone. The sun was down and Nick was acting as if he was taking live remotes from the field where reporters were standing in full daylight. Uh...come on KTAL..invest in some better live remote capabilities will ya? You're on a roll...don't cut corners now!!

At 10:55 AM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I wish I had seen that. Every station, including network, have been doing those "look lives" for years, but in KTAL's case they get it wrong all the time. Especially when they were shot during the day for the 5:00, then a producer decides to re-air it during the 10:00 when it's dark 30 outside.

That Michelle interview with the d'bag was so bad I had to change the channel. Since she is no longer the 10:00PM anchor they had her in the field. Like someone posted earlier, maybe this is the begging of the end of Michelle.

At 12:47 PM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

MeeShell had very little to contribute to the Fleming live-intvw. I mean if you're going to do a live political intvw with a State Senator, it seems you'd have one of your better reporters who actually cover politics instead of some talking mannequin. Sheesh, what a waste of time and space.

KTAL did blow it with the "look-lives" in broad daylight after dark. Guess they figured no one would notice. That's KSLA logic there.

At 2:06 PM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The d'bad is a US Congressman, not a lowly state senator. What you saw in that interview is what we have been dealing with since Michelle came to work here.

At 7:32 PM, November 09, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Call me crazy but since when does a primary anchor get time off during a rating sweeps month? November is one of the more important books and I saw tonight that Jacque was filling in for MeeShell who, once again. . . "..had the night off..". Uh..excuse me but at stations I worked for, this is a telling "kiss of death" careerwise. You would have to have a pretty darned good reason not to be on air during sweeps, I worked with some crazy prima-donna's but they weren't so nuts as to miss sweeps.

At 12:31 AM, November 10, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

MIchelle gets time off all the time regardless if it's sweeps or not. Your right, that no time off during sweeps rule is hard and fast rule at most station. It was always that way at KTAL but a former ND and GM stopped enforcing that rule years ago.

At 7:47 PM, November 12, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

With a new GM & ND at the helm, seems like the "sweeps attendance rule" would be mandatory. I remember a colleague who had that in her contract that she had to be there for the Nov & Feb ratings period.

Guess they'll let MeeShell play hooky and give her enough rope I suppose. But I agree with the previous poster, taking off during sweeps is career suicide at most places I've worked.

At 12:25 AM, November 13, 2012, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't get it. Michelle gets more time off then any of our anchors over the past 10 or 12 years. Sweeps. None sweeps. It doesn't matter.

Years ago when I lived in Dallas, there was an Af. American female newscaster on WFAA named Iola Johnson. She did a decent job but one of my working-buds told me that whenever her contract term date was like a month away, she would call in sick for several days until someone in management would send a courier over with her new contract and a pay raise memorandum. The last time she did this, management ignored her and let the contract expire and she was in effect, let go without getting her contract renewed. True story.
