KFSM Planning to "Tell Better Stories About Local Sports"
And the story continues about the recent canning and disbanding of the sports department at KFSM. Late last month KFSM fired sports reporter Mike Irwin and sports director John Engleman. Despite these firings KFSM news director Rick Bagley tells NWA online sports coverage will bigger and better than ever:
In an e-mail, KFSM news director Rick Bagley said that while he
cannot comment on personnel issues, the station is "reorganizing its
sports department to focus on better storytelling of local athletes and
all local sports."
"We are not ending sports coverage," Bagley continued in the e-mail.
"Our plan is to tell better stories about all local sports, including
the Arkansas Razorbacks. Sports is and will continue to be an important
part of our product on-air and online."

"We're cutting service to enhance our product!" Nice.
KFSM has also abandoned the weather for Mena. People from Mena and Polk County go to Fort Smith to shop and for medical care. Can't wait for the new weather reporter to start in the mornings at 40/29.
I wondered what the heck ksfm was doing when they had the news anchor doing the weekend sports spot. I enjoyed john and mikes sport coverage and their knowledge I will miss them and wish them well
It could be a cost cutting move on channel 5's part...they've been spending a lot of $$$ getting their new station KXNW channel 34 up and running. Definetly an expensive undertaking! Still, I hate anybody lose their job.
I'd still rather watch channel 5 with Darren and Ashley. I don't see why channel 40/29 haven't changed their anchors yet, I guess they don't really want to compete for local news since they hardly cover news in the fort smith area.
let the flaming begin....
All of this "Telling Better Stories" stuff is a bunch of company line bullcrap.
There was no better storyteller than Mike, no 20 year old fresh out of college kid will tell stories the way he did.
They'll just get beat on a bunch of real sports stories while airing a lot of poorly produced fluff packages.
With Mike Irwin's 30+ years of experience, the cometition ought to hire him.
laren how to tpye
the cometition ought to hire him.
I believe the cometition already has hired him.
