Chief Met Leaving KARK

Source: KARK KARK 4, Your Weather Authority, has proudly announced today that Chief Meteorologist Mike Francis has accepted the Chief position at WXIA in Atlanta, GA. Francis has been with KARK for ten years and was instrumental in building KARK’s brand as the station Central Arkansas can count on to be Your Weather Authority.

KARK 4 News Director Rob Heverling said, “We will certainly miss Mike and all that he has brought to KARK over the past 10 years. We are very proud that he has developed so much during his tenure here that he has been able to make a positive impression on a top-ten TV market. Way to go Mike!”

Heverling added, “The good news for us is that Mike leaves behind a weather brand that’s bigger than just one person, it’s about a dedicated team, working together to keep viewers safe during severe weather and help them plan for their day or their week.”

Mike Francis said, “Leaving Central Arkansas will not be easy for me. I want to thank our viewers, fans, friends and all my coworkers at KARK for helping me become the meteorologist I am today. The times we’ve shared together have given me and my family the opportunity to get the Chief Meteorologist position in one of the biggest TV markets in the country and we’re very grateful.” Francis also said, “It’s always been my number one goal as a meteorologist to keep people safe and it gives me great pleasure to know that with the weather team of Brett Cummins and Greg Dee, the people of Central Arkansas are in good hands. KARK is a great station and I wish them all the best.”

Francis started at KARK-TV on June 25, 2001 and was announced Chief Meteorologist on May 23, 2008. He has covered countless severe weather events in Arkansas such as Atkins on February 5, 2008, Mena on April 9, 2009 and most recently the tornado in Vilonia on April 25, 2011. Francis currently does his daily forecasting on the morning newscast, KARK 4 Today for both KARK-TV and KARZ-TV. His last newscast will be July 1, 2011.

Bret is going to be chief? Oh boy.

What does the "CB" mean before Meterologist on the screen when his name show?

Okay KARK dig into your pockets. Try to bring Barry Brandt back over to KARK. He is under used at KATV.

Wouldn't it be interesting if Michelle Rupp moved over to channel 4?? She actually has a BA in Metereology from Mississippi State. I don't know if that would happen, but I never thought Jessica Dean would jump ship and she did.

Brett has not been given the chief job. Management may give it to him, but as of now it's just an open position.

And don't forget that Mike can add he wore goggles 300 miles from a hurricane to his resume.

Todd Y with KATV could apply too. He'll never move up where he's at. But I also heard his wife works at KATV.

Never thought about M. Typo, that's interesting. What about a non-compete clause?

I know they don't hold up in court because its a right to work state, but you still have to go through the financial burden of fighting it and likely being off the air a few months.

It had just come to my attention that if you spell out Rupp on your smart phone, it turns it to typo. There you have it.

"CB Met" means Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.
There aren't very many in the country right now, because it is a very hard certification to attain. This will soon replace the AMS seal, and you have to have gotten a met degree from a real university to even be allowed to take the test. That means Mississippi State grads don't qualify, because it isn't a real met school...

Ah, yes. Meteorology as a major; almost as hard as majoring in P.E. (that's Physical Education, not Professional Engineering).

Hey, anytime that a weather reader says it will rain, he/she has a 50-50 chance of getting it right and if he/she misses it, everyone laughs.

Only job I know of that if you get it wrong over and over again you don't get fired.

Mike is a good guy. Congratulations.

Don't forget Tracy Beene. Rumor is she is freelance at KTHV.

At 8:40 AM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tracy has a regular job at VESTCOM. Not sure she would want to walk away from that.

I like Barry B....he was heir to throne but Todd Y. has kicked the game up a notch, he eats, drinks and sleeps weather and has really taken to social media which works well with the sudden changes of weather.

KATV is overloaded with mets behind Ned. I wouldn't be surprised if Rupp or Brandt go to 4.

As for Tracy Beene, money talks.

And as for Barry Brandt, he might not be utilized well, but he has a good gig. Does he even work 8hours? Again, money can make a final decision.

Hmm, the Ar/Gaz has posted an article that says Mike hasn't been hired by that Atlanta station. He's just leaving Kark. While no one is admitting hard feelings, why would he just quit otherwise?

Lex Luthor leaving...Jimmy Olsen will have to step in now as chief.

We dont want him here in Atlanta. This guy is taking Paul Ossmann's job and he will not be liked by Atlanta!!! Paul is an institution and will never be replaced!! Gannett sucks!!! Stay in ARK!!!!

Someone screwed up here....Who was it? OOOOpppppsssss

At 2:07 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He isn't going to big number 8?

Id like more info. The plot thickens.lol.

No matter what he does, his leave just means we're getting someone. Who will it be? Someone green or experienced?

I'm just a viewer but didn't Brett leave to take another job? And then kark hired a Harry Bounds who didn't last hardly any time at all. And for the most part, Kark's noon news is just a rehash of the evening news from the night before.

At 3:22 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Would someone who knows please explain the KARK Met mystery. Why was Brett fired in the first place? Why did Jason go to Seattle? Where is Harry buried? Why was the least knowledgeable met made chief when Brett returned? Will Mike ever learn where Arkansas towns are and how to pronounce them? What happens next? Inquiring minds want to know.

At 3:32 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mike was the best MET KARK had. The next best was Dan Scoff. Dan may come back. Barry will not leave his cushy schedule at 7 and Todd doesn't have a broad appeal, although he's probably the most knowledgeable (sp?) MET next to Mike. Rupp? Are you kidding? If she wasn't good enough to be an anchor at 7, (and she was passed over many, many times), she probably will not get a call from KARK. Don't dislike her, but it's a long shot!

Brent had personal issues at the time....Morning dropped with Harry...and Mike rubs people the wrong way....He's leave without a job. That says a lot

Nexstar has an Arkansas boy at one of it's Louisiana stations... wouldn't be surprised to see them bring him up, don't ya think?

Vic Schedler needs a gig, I hear. He could even bring Gusty out of moth balls and start giving the drawings to viewers again each evening.
Couldn't get one back in the 70s. Maybe now, as a 48-year-old, I could land one of those damn things.
Go Gusty!

Your Arkansas guy must be at KTVE or KARD Monroe-El Dorado.

At 6:36 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can't remember... just know he works in Louisiana and I travel too much to keep tabs. We get Shreveport and Monroe stations.

At 7:27 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Not sure where the new Met is from, but the other Met's at KTAL Texarkana-Shreveport are from Missouri and Central Louisiana.

At 7:34 PM, June 15, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yep. You were right. He works at KTVE and KARD. He was born and raised in Little Rock. Just read his bio on their site. Looks like he would be a good fit if they were gonna go out of the market, but stay in the company.

At 5:11 AM, June 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Nexstar is buying more and more stations so even if he left the company, Nexstar would eventually buy what ever stations he moves too.

If Barry "Act 1" Brandt goes back to KARK, then they've lost me as a viewer. Bad enough with Matt Mosler for mornings.

You are not the only one. We alienate our viewers all the time. Just be glad you do not work here.

It's statements like those that make me think they'll bring in someone new. Obviously, with so much distaste for the same flip-flopping talent, one would think that you'd try to inject new blood into the mix. What do you all think?

At 9:09 PM, June 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Barry would be great as chief in the evening and they should put Brett on the morning.

At 10:00 PM, June 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I bet they won't hire Steve Martone anytime soon, hehe.

Can't believe that as long as he has been here he can't pronounce Pine Bluff or Hot Springs correctly. Sounds like someone that has just come to Arkansas from far away.
