Another One Bites the Dust in Shreveport......

we'll never hear her say goodbye since KTBS can;t seem to get all their audio problems fixed.

Wrong station that's Ktal with all the problems

KTBS has almost as many tech problems as KTAL

At 7:56 AM, May 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You have a point there. I use to watch both KTAL and KTBS. Both stations have so many technical problems, and turnover, Even though I am not yet in their demographic, I started watching KSLA with all of the over 55's.

All of the "Reporters" at KTBS have been getting their resume's together since they got forced to be "MMJs" and shoot and edit their own packages. Their leaving is all part of the master plan to get rid of all the older better payed employees and replace them with younger cheaper ones. The problem with making photographers reporters is they aren't good reporting. And reporters terrible at shooting. The only way "MMJ's" work, is if they are taught to shoot and report in college.
Like it or not, that's the way the industry is headed. Although even the new MMJ's at KTBS have been overheard to say that they are just there to get their reel together and move on.
KTBS is in real trouble, I'd say management needs to wake up and realize what's going on, but they're the problem.

At 11:27 AM, May 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is why nothing will ever change at KTBS. Get riud of "The George" and all of this will stop.

The new reporters are not the only ones getting their resumes together. Personally, I can not stand any of our new on air talent, and from the looks of things, our viewers can not stand them either.

As long as the Wrays continue to be indifferent towards how poorly things are managed and merely focus on their incomes, nothing will change. You have a family that basically inherited the business and has no passion for TV outside of the income it produces. They look only at their incomes and their offtime either playing with firearms or shopping jaunts to other cities. They have entrusted a guy who is full of hubris and greed to be their overseer. Unless something incredibly wrong goes with the income flow...nothing is going to change.

At 9:53 PM, May 29, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is 100% correct.

I moved to Nashville about 3 years ago and recently returned for work. Before I left, I was a dedicated KTBS viewer, and I have always been interested in the inner workings of the tv news markets. But when I came back, I was surprised at how much worse the quality of the reporters had become. A couple of my production friends have both said that KTBS pays their reporters much less than any other television station in this market and I have to say, coming from Nashville where the reporters were great, it really shows. You get what you pay for, and I don't know about this "MMJs" stuff that you're talking about because a reporter is a reporter but I know a good reporter when I see one and Casey Ferrand is good. That's probably why she is leaving. It looks now like there won't be any good reporters at KTBS left. I preferred KTBS to KSLA long ago, but now I have to watch KSLA becasue they're the only station with any sort of experienced reporters.

At 1:21 AM, May 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KSLA has experienced reporters?

At 1:22 PM, May 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fred Childres and the weekend anchor are good reporters and the rest are OK. Not great but better than KTSB ones.

At 2:53 PM, May 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is why KLSA is #1 in this market. Yes, they do have turn over just like all other station. However, KSLA is the most stable of all the local affiliates. KTBS has surpassed KTAL in turn over.

Run Casey run! If you want to stay in broadcasting et as far away from this market as you can.

I moved to Shreveport a few years ago and I couldn't help but notice that KTBS has hardly any African-American anchors & reporters. I find this strange considering the majority population in the city is African American. I see KSLA and KTAL on-air people are reflective of the community. Now that Ms Ferrand is leaving KTBS seems like there's no on-air diversity. Am I missing something here or is this a deliberate hiring practice at KTBS?

At 11:54 PM, May 30, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They don't even have a token minority anchor or meteorologist? I thought maybe they'd get another after Trish Williford left. That's wrong in this city that's majority African-American.

At 12:43 AM, May 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No African-American, but they sure have the gay population represented. What's that about?

That one guy -- the fellow who works with Gerry in the afternoons -- has a personality on air like a white piece of paper....boring!

At 11:26 AM, May 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

He looks like he'd be boring. Can't stand to watch him especially because Gerry is so solid.

At 8:31 PM, May 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The bigots & racists are alive and well at KTBS too.
Here's a hint, talent: if you have a microphone on, producers and crew can hear you. Also, if you're talking in the studio, there's a studio listen mic.

At 10:02 PM, May 31, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Too bad KTBS has gone down across the board. The exception being morning news. Some of the reporters should not be on air to start with.

At 12:48 PM, June 01, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well folks at KTBS aren't too interested in hiring people who are telegenic to begin with. There are some exceptions but those are the exception not the rule. Big thing at KTBS is they don't like to deal with talent change so for years they'd hire folks who weren't too ambitious and would stay in the market for years. Hate to say it but some folks there will scare babies and make dogs cower. And as for presentation skills? A whole 'nudder can o' worms.

At 12:38 AM, June 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am in Shreveport from time to time on business, so I watch KTBS. You are right about at least one of those reporters being scary. Watching that police beat guy is hard on the eyes.

At 12:39 PM, June 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I live Dallas now, but I come back home to Shreveport at least once or twice a month. Over the past two years it seems like every other trip home I would see a few face reporting or in the anchors chair. All three stations are like this now, but KTBS is by far the worst. The turn over is so constant I do not think many of these people are making to the end of their contracts.

We use to have some very good anchors and reporters in Shreveport, and they would stay around for 10 or 20 years. Here in Dallas we do have new faces from time to time, but nothing come close to what is going on there in Shreveport.

At least some of you are not as down on your luck as that old Ed Bradley from KSLA who ran for mayor. He is working as a car dealer here in Dallas. He tried to sell me a car last year, but I already knew his story. He was even more annoying in person then he was with those Editorials with Ed Bradley he use to do.

Randy Bain I hope youre looking at an African American anchor that you have with that opening.

At 5:33 PM, June 02, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I heard KTBS is about to make a clean sweep of on-air personalities and start fresh with new anchors, new reporter, new mets, and new sports crew.

At 6:28 PM, June 02, 2011, Anonymous Logan said...

Weird. This doesn't look like a Facebook or MySpace page, so why are a bunch of immature comments filling up the space? It's funny (in a pathetic way) that the topic went from Casey Ferrand leaving, to how bad management supposedly is, to how unattractive the anchors/reporters are. Seriously? Chill out, people.

At 9:10 AM, June 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

you know what i heard? that KTBS is replacing all their employees with unicorns and pixie dust! And talking squirrels. all part of a sinister plot by the family that owns the station---yes, the same family that still gives out Christmas bonuses greater than anything offered in local television.
keep your eyes on channel 3---it won't be long before a bushy-tailed squirrel is delivering sports and throwing back to a unicorn in the weather center. you heard it here first!!

Anonymous Said What?

At 10:56 AM, June 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You forgot to mention the leprechauns doing weather.

I heard times were tough at Disney and they laid off Jasmine from Aladdin.

...This just in: New anchor to replace Sherri Talley has been announced at KTBS.

At 5:27 PM, June 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually I think the plan at KTBS is to have hand-puppets with interchangeable features so as to keep the appearance of talent diversity. The news dept. consist of students who are taking part in a summer arts program by SRAC.

At 8:39 PM, June 03, 2011, Anonymous Logan said...

I was walking around downtown one evening and some crazy looking hobo stabbed me with some kind of needle. Shortly after, I did indeed see a newscast anchored by a squirrel, checking in with a unicorn in the weather lab. And if KTBS hired characters from Aladdin to do the news, weather and sports, that would be awesome. It would be like a...whole new world or something. Heh.

At 9:26 PM, June 03, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

As funny as this may be, at least one of their reporters does look like a carton character. Watch the police beat guy.

At 12:03 AM, June 05, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Underneath the unwitty silliness there is some truth on this thread. Poke fun at it all you want, but this blog is full of tv people who come here to vent. KTBS employees are just displeased that they're no longer top-rated on any newscast. Maybe they should look within if they want to figure out why.

At 8:36 AM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the idiot who's ragged on the police beat guy's appearance, why don't you post a pic of yourself on here so everyone can judge your looks.

Coward!!!

At 9:41 AM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Redford said...

I am the "police beat guy" and even though I've got thick skin, these comments are pretty disheartening. Poke fun of my looks all you want, I'm still gonna report on crime. If my appearance bothers you so badly, close your eyes.

Casey, I wish you the very best in Houston. You're a lovely and talented journalist.

I saw a KTBS van early one morning looking to hire day-workers to shoot newsvideo & punch newscasts and do yard maintenance at the station. But after they heard what the job pays, they said: "No Gracias, Senor!"

At 2:37 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chris Redford, it sounds to me like the people who are posting that they don't like your looks are competition at the other station. They see you as a threat because you're a strong reporter (about the only one at your station, unfortunately). Let 'em talk, it's just hot air.

At 3:56 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was one of the posters on this thread, the last thing we see as competition from KTBS is Chis Redford. Some people should be in front of the camera, others should be in a back room doing their work. Chris Redford should be in a back room. A very dark back room.

At 5:10 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Shouldn't reporters be hired for their abilities, and not their looks?
I've seen Redford's work, and it's great. I don't give a damn how he looks.
Some of the prettiest people on TV are unwatchable airheads.

At 5:19 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey I think Redford does an okay job as a crime-beat reporter. Although I do admit he does have a serious stare...contact lens issues? I dunno. Maybe he could try to relax his look... like it or not; TV is a visual medium and like it or not, viewers like to look at relaxed pros and not get stared down. (Talent Consultant Anyone?) Heck I used to get creeped out by former TV anchor Liz Swaine's ET stare while reading the teleprompter. Maybe that's why I don't watch 3 that much anyways... my eyes start to water. ;)

At 5:53 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Am I the only one who has noticed how slanted that crime reporting is? Chris Redford always makes The Shreveport Police Department look like they are wonderful. Every time.
He must not be ambitous at all, he has been in that same position for ten years. Any reporter who is any good is moved up, or they move on. Casey is a good example of moving on. I hope she does well.

At 5:55 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous I'm Watching said...

Hey original poster, I'm glad your station gives you a computer in the very dark room they use to hide you. Although I think the "anonymous" name you use hides you well enough.

To Redford, I think you do a damn great job and at least you have the guts to use your name on here!

Keep up the good work.

At 6:13 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Logan said...

You can't blame all of these people for using the "Anonymous" name option. They seem to have learned their style of jokes at the Rob Schneider School For "Comedy". Had I learned all of my zingers from that institution, I'd want to remain anonymous as well.

At 6:16 PM, June 06, 2011, Anonymous Logan said...

Wait! That's it! Hey, Mr. Spade? David Spade? You can use your real name, now. We know it's you.

We'll miss Casey.

But I could do without all these people who watch the news from their cubicle in another newsroom across town, talking trash about others in the profession.

To those KSLA fans, just remember next time you see somebody Skyping live, with an iPhone in a dark hallway, about a story that came from a press release, that's your station. That's how you roll... so enjoy.

These posting from KTBS are cattier then they are at my station. No wonder the new producers are already looking for another jobs.

Ehhh.... Shreveport is a bush-league TV market. Folks stay here because it's not all that competitive and the local stations keep the bar low enough so as to not encourage any serious news competition. And I have to say I've not seen any station promo itself as much as KTBS... our news set, our 4-split screen, our weatherset, our other station, our new restroom wallpaper, our weathergirl wears no panties....geez!! Whatsamatter 3? Can't sell the airtime so toss up a promo!! Back-to-back promos... Next they'll promo a promo on "We run more promos than any other station". And if I see the GM with the Jim Jones stare do another promo... I'll hurl!

I do not live in Shreveport, so I have no horse in this race. I am here several times a year on business and do watch the local news. Casey Ferrand was a jewel for this market and will do well anywhere. Chris Redford is not only ugly and ill at ease on camera, he is not a nice person. It is easy to see why KSLA is currently dominate in the market. The viwer wants to watch at least reasonably attractive reporters or they simply change the channel. Step it back up KTBS.

I had no idea people could be so mean and petty. If I'm so disturbing to watch... Don't!

My parents may not have created a Brad Pitt look-a-like, but they did create a son who knows when to politely bow out of a mess.

What's really sad is that half of you who are attacking me on here are probably yucking it up with me in person.

Who needs your criticism? So what if I've been here ten years. Maybe I like it here. Seems to me y'all are the unhappy ones.

You can find me on facebook and leave your comments there, but be careful... I have pics on my page and they might be too disturbing to see. Look at your own risk.
God bless and good-bye.

Wow. You people are bitter.

I hope you're not the same media folks that I socialize with in Shreveport.

I know that "casual business travelers, who occasionally pass through Shreveport," don't visit this blog.

So let's face it: a bunch of 20-somethings are talking trash about their competition.

I had a professor in J-school who told me: "It doesn't matter how it's packaged, as long as it tells a story."

The moral of the story? Ratings don't matter. We went into journalism to tell people facts and inform the public. If you're one of those "reporters" who like to be sensational and make yourself the center of the "story," good luck.

Take from that what you will...

At 12:45 PM, June 07, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This immature post is a big reason why I couldn't stand Shreveport. Redford is not ugly. He's a great guy and one of the best reporters in that market. He is the ONLY good reporter left at KTBS. As for Casey, she was not a jewel and she's a rookie. Maybe someday, she'll be a good reporter. It's not making fun, it's just the honest truth. And for anyone who wants to comeback with "She's in Houston, a big market, blah, blah, blah. Well, she's about to get a wake up call as an MMJ at the bottom station. I do wish her well, but she had an attitude that she knew it all and would NEVER take advice from those of us "experienced" reporters.

At 1:45 PM, June 07, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chris Redford is ugly and that is by anyone's standards. It is suprising that people thinks about him enough to write about him. This is not bashing, it is stating the truth. How can he be a good reporter when he has trouble getting his words out? He can't speak!Nevermind the unattractiveness.

At 2:11 PM, June 07, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey pot, look who's black!

How can you rip on Redford when you can't even form a sentence.

What a joke. Go back to your hole in the unemployment line and leave the TV folks alone!

Uh....whoever posted that "ratings don't matter"... sorry, I beg to differ. It's a business and your performance is measured by audience shares & ratings. Your J-School prof must've not worked real long in the business otherwise he or she would've understood that.

At 9:58 AM, June 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What's the big deal about Chris Redford's looks?

Think back to Walter Cronkite.

Dear Old Uncle Wally was as homely as a mud fence - and can very possibly be considered as the dean of TV newscasting!

Hang in there, Chris.

At 10:20 AM, June 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We could understand Walter Cronkite when he spoke. He was not always winking and blinking around. I don't remember any stories about Cronkite hanging out at The Capri Adult Theater or leering at policemen's crotches. Do you?

I think the KTBS guy has problems with wearing contacts. As for "Uncle Walter"... well considering how newsmen looked in those days... he was pretty normal. And his delivery was good and pleasant to listen to.

Hi all!

This is the reporter mentioned in the original post. I've been gone from Shreveport for 3 weeks now, and I have to say after reading this post (which I seriously can't believe is still going) I am so glad I got out of that city. I love and miss my co-workers and many of my colleagues from other stations who became very close friends, but I have to say I DO NOT miss Shreveport. Many of the people there are just plain mean and rude, yet there are many who helped bring some bright moments for me during my three years there. I wouldn't say a bad word about any of the reporters and anchors there, so it saddens me to see people who I may have called "friend" secretly bashing others in a forum like this, especially Chris Redford. He is one person that I know always tells it like it is and has certainly earned my respect as a co-worker and friend.

For those who really care and actually know me, I'm loving it in Houston and learning a great deal really fast. Good luck to everyone still working in the market. I hope if you truly do want to leave there, that you also get a great opportunity like I did. SO LONG!!!

At 7:35 PM, June 24, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well said Casey, and good luck to you. Houston is a great market, and you will be very happy there.

To Casey, believe me when I tell you, Shreveport will not miss you either. It is good to hear that you like Houston and have advanced yourself. The same cannot be said for your friend, Chris Redford. He has gone further than he ever should have in TV. Chris is bitter, unattractive and has no business on the air. If you had any idea the demeaning things he says about you and the other female reporters at the station, you would not count him as a friend. Good luck Casey and so long!

While all of this is going on we are over here looking down on your station from atop our ratings laughing our asses off at you, and at all of the problems you openly post on this blog.

I was wondering what happened to Casey?...Hope she's doing well in Houston. Why can't the news stations in this city keep an attractive anchorwoman/reporter?

First Najahe Hall leaves KSLA, then Casey and that Italian chick meteorologist leaves KTBS!

I know this is an old post, but I just have to say...

I shot many stories with Chris Redford. And he is by far one of THE BEST reporters I have ever worked with. DEFINITELY the most ambitious reporter I have worked with.

The comments on here aren't just "disheartening" as Chris said, they are petty and rude. The kinds of comments you expect out of middle-schoolers.

Granted, I left KTBS and TV news because of the working environment. Not because of my colleagues, but because of management.

To all of you critics who launch your arrows from a distance... I'll at least listen to you if you've ever worked in the business. But don't you dare criticize work you know nothing about. Any person who works a day in that business deserves respect for what they put up with. The pressure is more intense than can be described.

If you don't like it, don't watch. It's that simple. But don't you dare trash people who see more crap in a week than most will see in their lifetime. You'll never understand what they go through. So grow up.

I never worked with her, but I'll say congrats to Casey. Glad KTBS didn't jade you so much you got out of the business. If you can be happy while still in the biz, go for it. Me, I just had to get out of it and have a life again.
