Tracking Storms on a Sunday Afternoon...

Was KARK the only station going wall to wall with severe weather coverage as tornodo warnings were issued for parts of north Arkansas? KATV and KHTV stayed with regular programming. Looks like Channel 7 is now covering the tornadoes....no doubt NBA fans aren't gonna be happy as the playoffs are suppose to be on the air. How long will they stay with it....

Merideth Mitchell now on, on Channel 11...she seems lost.

245: Ed finally arrived a few minutes ago. 11 is my choice for severe weather but come on, put a METEOROLOGIST on the air during severe weather.

Amazing that thv has no one to cover tornado warnings on the weekend! I understand Meredith isn't a meteorologist, but she didn't seem able to provide even basic radar information. Um, um, um. According to her original bio, she was taking meteorology classes. What happened? They should hire someone new if she isn't able to cope.

The weekend anchor at 4 looks like a little girl pretending to be an anchor. Needs serious help with her look.

7:40 Meredith breaks on to give a potential tornado in NW part of the state. She was continuously looking off to the side. She is obviously not comfortable in this role.

I think channel 7 has some of the best coverage. They educate you and not try to scare you, like Mike Francis of channel 4 tries to. That meterologist on channel 16 needs a geography lesson. He also tends to talk "above everyones head". IMO, a weatherperson needs to educate, not scare, and not talk over your heads. Barry and Todd and Ned on channel 7 do a good job of educating people during severe weather.

At 11:01 PM, April 24, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Barry needs to go back return to channel 4. Ned is never going to leave. So Barry will be left on 7's morning show. 4 could fire the weather girl (Brett cummins) again and let Barry take that shift.

To the above poster...Your comment is completly uncalled for!!!! I happen to work with Brett and think he's a good person and a hell of a good meteorologist.

I love Brett!

I've always like Brett. He does a great job. He is much better than "the sky is falling" Francis. He can be a little dramatic, while still being a very nice guy. Agreed, that Ned & Todd did a good job together the other night. And bless Ned's heart for being left all alone on KTHV the other night. I didn't see Meredith yesterday, but can only imagine. They need some help over there.

4 gets my vote. 7 has stepped up their game to match 4. If some think 4 is too urgent then 11 is like watching severe weather coverage in slow motion. 16 is definitely trying to improve severe weather coverage too. 4 has set the standard for severe weather coverage here. But compared to stations in OK City Channel 4 can improve a lot.

At 10:56 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

4 has never set the standard for anything. everyone in this market knows that. i like mike francis though. he doesn't scare anyone. i think he just likes his job and gets excited about the weather. BUT I SAY AGAIN..... 4 is not leading in anything. they are the solid number 3 in everything they do.

I really like Mike Frances' videocast on facebook. I use to be a big Tom and sometimes Ed fan because they seemed down to earth on-air and fun, but here lately, Mike is where I get my weather. His videocast on facebook explains everything perfectly and even gives hard times for things. He'll be mine and my family's met from now on.

At 11:04 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have to say I kind of agree even though I hate to admit it. Mike Francis' fan base is growing. I work at another station and even I have noticed it. He has more facebook friends than probably any other MET in the DMA. Good for him, I guess.

Oh......and I just went to check this video cast thing he does on facebook. I guess it really was good. He explained everything and took his time with it. And he did it himself like a VLOG which really wins people over. It was personable.

KARK is the leader in storm coverage. HANDS DOWN! It used to be seven. Eleven is like watching paint dry. Anyone watching eleven is putting their lives at stake while they try to compile a complete sentence.

At 11:18 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, I heard Mike was an ass, but if the viewers like him..... the viewers like him. I just added him on the fbook to and I see what everyone is talking about. He has had over 30 people like his fan page in the last 10 minutes. Good for him. It seems like he's putting alot of work into his online stuff and it is paying off

Brett Cummins and Greg Dee make the best team during severe weather. They are clear and calm. I click around and always find myself returning to Channel 4. They are clearly the best.

At 11:19 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK is sometimes the leader and sometimes they are not. It is so hit and miss with that station.

At 11:20 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 4 has improved greatly over the past few years. It's not the same station at all. They weren't always the leader.. but they are now!

At 11:22 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I give them about a year and then maybe they will be onboard with 7 and 11. This whole "investigators" thing is a joke though. It's Arkansas, not CSI Miami.

At 11:25 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Out of 4, 7, and 11. Greg and Brett are the weakest duo!!! You're saying those two would beat out a duo of Tom & Ed or Todd & Ned? You are freaking crazy! They don't have the years behind them or the on-camera presence. Give them 5+ years and maybe they will be there. Brett comes off fruity and Greg comes off too young and nerdy. Still need some work.

At 11:26 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe you should actually watch channel 4 before commenting on how bad they are. They are doing investigative stories. The only thing seven and eleven are investigating is where their viewers are going. Just ask their sales departments.

At 11:32 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't know about the other commenter, but I have watched 4 and the stories aren't that very investigating. Just saying.

At 11:32 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ask their sales department what? Why KARK has been a constant third and will continue to be? Okay, sure.

At 11:33 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

7 will continue to rule. 11 and 7 will battle it out for some shows. They have been doing it for years. They are used to it. Unfortunately, 4 probably won't top them for several years. It's just the facts, mam.

At 11:35 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree whoever said Brett and Greg are the strongest team have no clue what they are talking about. Been in this biz for 28 years and them boys have nothing on Ned or Ed. They just aren't there yet. Not saying they are bad!!!!!! Just saying that they aren't the best duo yet.

At 11:51 AM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You need to check the numbers. Last time I checked, channel 4 was a strong number 2 and 5:00 and 6:00 and gaining fast on the morning show. 11 is out of the game. THOSE ARE JUST THE FACTS!

I'm not the biggest 11 fan in the world, but they still have stronger numbers than 4. And how would you know? 4 can't afford the ratings.

"I'm not the biggest 11 fan in the world, but they still have stronger numbers than 4. And how would you know? 4 can't afford the ratings."

Unlike 11, 4 spends money on reporters, producers, photographers and anchors, sat time... you know, people and stuff to cover the news. And if you were cued in to ratings information (which is usually available to the public) you would know 11 occupies the 3rd place position at 5 and 6pm.

Meredith needs to mature in her stage presence, get your weather studies done, become more credible, and finally, a good short haircut would go a long way in helping achieving that maturity. Ed needs some help.

At 6:13 PM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 4 is kicking a$$ and taking names right now. While Ed and Ned are sitting on their rears, Mke Francis is ROCKING it. He's in front of the green screen manning the ship! He's got videos of tornados. He's got two mets. He's got storm spotters live. He's got a storm tracker in house.

What is 11 doing?! People dont want to hear from Emergency management. They need Ed on green screen. They need Meredith on another screen. They need Tom out in the garden. They have so many resources and aren't doing a dang thing. Sad.

Mike did the morning show today too, didn't he? That is dedication. They are doing great. I agree with the previous poster. 11 could be doing so much more. Get Craig and Dawn out of the way. Put a wx person on the desk. 11 is also really neglecting their radio listeners too.

7 is just boring and all over the place.

I hate to admit it, but 4 is ahead.

At 6:38 PM, April 25, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

11 is boring, but Ed had been right on every storm just perfectly.

Mike was talking about a tornado and then Brett says, but there isn't a tornado warning there anymore. haha

Mike has the most going on which is great, but Ed is precise.

I'd say it's a toss up.

7's facebook page is telling people in West Little Rock to get in their safe place, but Ed is telling people in WLR that they are fine. Wonder who is right? Stay tuned.

KARK has gone to 5 different live streams.
An ENG/Sat shot (can't tell) from a rescue in Garland County.
3 mets all offering interesting information.
Randy (forgot his last name) offering steady updates from storm spotters via ham radio.
I saw the the tornado video a few times too. They talked to the guy on the phone who shot the video while it was rolling.
I haven't watch the other stations that much but I my impression is 4 is doing better than the others.

Katherina just did a great live shot for 7. Her voice is SOOOOOOO much better now compared to how it was at 11. She's actually using her natural voice and it is soooo much better!!!

Am I the only one that has noticed Tracy Beene's sideburns flip out and all of a sudden "Bozo Hair". It is very distracting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Don't they have people checking things like that at KTHV. Love her short haircut though......

Mike Francis and the crew at KARK carried the mail tonight. I was impressed and they had a person monitoring Amateur Radio frequencies to gather reports from the spotters in the field as they are relayed to the NWS. Nice touch and speedy reports. Good job to all at KARK.

Craig tried to help Ed again.

At 1:38 AM, April 26, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why did channel 11 put their greenest reporter, Lisa Hutson in the field.

She had nothing to say and just doesn't look good.

Not a good addition to THV.

It would have been better to have Meredith out there.

i stuck with seven most of the night but i have to say at one point i was a little concerned. i live in saline county and when we got put under a tornado warning in the benton area, seven never mentioned anything about us taking cover. 11 posted on fb about taking cover in the benton area. ned and todd didnt hardly mention anything about it. gonna give 4 a shot tonight to see how they do

Overall with the recent storms, KATV is number 1, KARK number 2 and, sorry to say, KTHV was far behind the others.

It's better the mets get the face time during severe weather than the anchors - i.e., Craig & Dawn.

Thv used to be number one in my book and the ratings book, but just like the ratings I don't watch them anymore.

They lost the recipe that made every aspect good and a major part of that is the latest talent.

2:18, you are 100% correct. KTHV's newscasts look as bad as the crap they produce at Arkansas Tech. But the kids at Tech have an excuse: they're still learning and aren't getting paid.

Channel 4 has gotten way better since debuting their HD. Love the live shots out in the field too. We've been watching the weather like it's a movie. Keep up the good work.

When will the weather reader wear his goggles again?
That was probably the most stupid thing I have ever seen.
Is he more comfortable in a hurricane than chasing a tornado?
