Severe Weather Coverage...Winners and Losers...

Well it looked like all the Little Rock stations were on the ball Tuesday night as severe storms pounded the state. All the Little Rock stations had their weather teams in place providing wall-to-wall coverage as the storms mached across the state. Will say Channel 11 needs to give Ed some help. Some times it to the point he just loses his voice with no one to fill the gap. Like I said the other day, KTHV needs to hire another met that is strong in severe weather to bring in and help Ed.

The losers were the Shreveport stations....come on guys! A tornado is blowing its way across SouthWest Arkansas...and quite frankly you didn't give a damn! Sure you had your crawls across the screen but a tornado warning warrants coverage to let viewers know where it is...where it is going. You dropped the ball..all of the Shreveport stations did!!

KSLA 12 should drop that annoying "We Track Storms" slogan. They don't track storms...unless they feel like it. Either fulfill your promise or shut up!

umm, thank you! I live in south arkansas and we can't get Monroe or Shreveport stations to care about the weather... it's awful!

Is it me or is Todd on ch 7 just annoying. He just keeps walking over Ned when he is trying to talk.

Then over on 4 Mike Francis sounds like a baptist preacher in a pulpit screaming hell fire and brimstone.

KARK should simulcast their coverage on the sister station for the folks in south AR.

KSLA used to provide extended coverage on tornado warnings, but they stopped. An EF4 hit near Winnfield, LA several months ago and Ron Young couldn't be bothered to cut into programming for more than 30 seconds.

At 10:12 PM, April 19, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

why simulcast kark on ktal you'd still be getting nothing more than little rock info, on a shreveport station. plus the shreveport people would throw a hissy. the shreveport stations have capable weather folks.just for some reason they don't give a rats but for arkansas!...until ratings time!

Ed was good on 11 as usual. Meredith was there helping with Facebook and Twitter. But we could have done without Craig O'Neil butting in with questions and leaning over the desk...not a professional look. Seemed Ed was getting annoyed with Craig a little.

"Then over on 4 Mike Francis sounds like a baptist preacher in a pulpit screaming hell fire and brimstone."

Oh good Lord, I thought he was going to stroke out a couple of times with the drama. I was amazed when he said there was "beefy" hail in one storm. Is that a new weather term? Would "beefy" be larger than, say, basketball-sized hail?

There are two main reasons the Shreveport stations didn't go into severe weather coverage
1) the storms only impacted a small population
2) ever since KSLA broke into a football game and was balled Out, every one is scared to go wall to wall.

And by the way, every station interrupted coverage.

Todd to me isn't annoying, he is what I would call passionate.

But thankfully not the extreme of Mike Francis with his smart pad.

It was cool to find out reporter Michelle Rupp (with Channel 7) has her Met degree. Unless I missed it, I haven't seen her on air yet doing the weather. They seem to have the most mets of all the local stations anyway.

Is it true Meredith Mithchell with THV doesn't have her degree, that's a turn off. Literally, I'll turn the channel if she's on.

I vote Channel 7 won again this week, plus they were the only station with two reporters live with storm damage.

Don't care.

I'd say the best weather coverage goes hand in hand with ratings.

People want to turn to the station they trust.

A lot of people watch the news just to see how the weather is going to be, so the're going to tune to the same station when there is bad weather.

I think that makes sense.

We bounced from station to station - all of them, including Fox16. Spent the most time on KATV & KTHV, less after Craig entered the picture and stayed and stayed. But I honestly feel he was trying to help Ed who was all alone. Francis gets way too dramatic. It's better when it's Brett. I enjoy Todd at 7. I thought he and Ned were a good team. So ... it's KATV, KTHV, tie KARK & Fox16.

Michelle Rupp has a Met degree? Great, now maybe she can go from a horrible reporter to a horrible meteorologist.

Mostly watched KATV, until I could no longer stand to hear Todd mention "volumetric radar" anymore. I personally couldn't care less what type of radar you are looking at, just show it to me.

During severe weather is when the non-HD stations really look bad. We started on 7, but when we went to 16, you could just see so much more detail on their map it was ridiculous. 7 should be embarrassed that they are still stuck in 1995. With that blurry mess, I was at the mercy of the guy with the mouse to see where things were going, but on 16, I could figure it out myself, even when they were focused on an area 100 miles from my house.

FYI NWA stations and KAIT in Jonesboro are in Arkansas too.

At 11:10 AM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KARK and KTHV showed a demonstration of alpha male dominance. As a viewer it was uncomfortable to watch Ed in the 9 o'clock hour. There appeared to be conflict between Ed and EVERYONE in the studio. Looked like Craig was trying to help. Francis has too much Cantore drama on KARK. Todd needs to leave the science to his peers and just give the relevant information over the airwaves.

Craig was not only a hindrance but he also managed to block the big screen TV where the weather radar display was by leaning on the desk where Ed was trying to work. He just has to get in on everything that is going on. Thanks, Craig.

THV has marketed Ed to be THE weatherman, as in you don't need anybody but Ed. They don't want anybody but Ed doing it. They could hire Jim Cantore and still only put Ed on in severe weather. It's ridiculous.

At 8:41 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I liked how KATV had both their top guys.

When they're on the air for hours straight, you need the wing man.

At 8:51 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Michelle Rupp is a solid reporter and one of the best in the market (no relation, by the way).
Can't forget her emotional coverage of the late Paul Eells' death a few years back - fought through the tears to do her job that night.
Did not know she has a met degree until Ned mentioned it.
Stayed with KATV's coverage primarily, but sampled everyone throughout the night.
Felt for Ed on KTHV; seemed overwhelmed at times.
The guy on KLRT (can't recall his name) wasn't too smooth sometimes.

Saving one life is just as important as saving a thousand. if the shreveport stations wanna be that, just a shreveport station, then so be it. stop coming up covering news stories in places you normally wouldn't just because it's ratings time. Shreveport stations are suppose to serve the ArkLaTex.

At 10:15 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The scroll gives the warning and enough time for people to take shelter. The reasons the Shreveport stations didn't go into wall-to-wall coverage are 1) this was not an outbreak scenario where large tornados were expected and 2) there was no more than one tornado warning at a time.
Also, every station (including KTBS, KTAL, KMSS, and KSLA) broke into coverage for approximately five minutes to warn of the impending weather. .

At 11:00 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Looks as if KMSS (yes the FOX affiliate) in Shreveport is winning in weather coverage. Providing updates to non-tornadic storms in HD. http://t.co/I3Du8BJ

At 11:16 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

One tornado warning should be enough to stay with it and track it so folks in the path will know where it is...and where it's headed PERIOD. Let it happen when it's down in louisiana and I bet it will be wall to floor coverage. Watch the weather channel they'll provide better coverage!

At 11:45 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ed won't get help because THV only has 2 meteorologists. Tom 12 hours on, Ed 12 hours on.

At 11:54 PM, April 20, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You'd be surprised. Meredith knows her stuff and she will have her degree soon. I didn't think Craig was annoying. KTHV viewers love and trust him. They want to him there. I know I didn't mind it. People just hate on Craig out of jealousy. He is one of the nicest, down to earth people you will ever meet. He has that station and all of the viewers in the palm of his hand and he doesn't even know it! He just jumped in because he thought his friend, Ed, could use a break from talking for a few minutes. Why hire a new met for a few severe weather days out of the year? Ed is getting the job done just fine.

Michelle Rupp is a fantastic reporter. Maybe one of the best in the market. You OBVIOUSLY don't like her or don't watch the other stations. I hope she becomes a met, but not at KATV because they don't appreciate her. She could do the KTHV morning show as a met! All the viewers are over Tom and his shitty attitude. He's a grumpy old man now and no one likes it. Those who watch their second channel THV 2 know it and get to see it daily. Talk about an asshole.

At 12:58 AM, April 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KATV lets Michelle do what she wants, if she wants to fill in anchor, if she just wants to do a straight pack and leave early, if she wants another degree. She has it good and does just fine.

She is better than Meredith too, she actually has her degree.

You're telling me that not only does THV hire people as green as can be but they hire someone who doesn't even have a degree to do an important job like weather. Hasn't she been there like 5-years. THAT IS A SHAME!!!!!

I get less turned on by THV every time I look at this site.

Somebody is obviously a Tom hater on here. I can't believe the cowards that post such hateful comments on this blog. I am going to investigate cyber bullying and if it is a felony in Arkansas as it is in some states. Who will fall on their face in shame if IP addresses are tracked? Will it be you?

No kidding. If this were not anonymous I'm sure we would all be humiliated by the comments we posted. Whether it's Tom, Meredith or whomever, suggesting somebody lose their job, livelyhood, support for their family, that's pretty low.

At 3:15 PM, April 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think cyber bullying only works if you stalk, threaten someone's life, or cause severe emotional distress to the victim. Unfortunately, Tom is an on air talent so it could NOT hold up in court because he chose a job that puts himself in the public eye. If he were an accountant or a teacher, it would be a different story. Surely anyone with a media degree knows this. Plus, I'm sure Brannon knows several people in this industry don't like him. He's a grown man and probably doesn't care. He gets his paycheck whether you like him or not.

At 3:28 PM, April 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yea, I don't think Tom cares what people say on here. He's been in this business a long time. He knows better than to believe or take this stuff seriously. You're right he wouldn't get close to a suit here in Arkansas. Cyber bullying is for minors in school and it's a misdemeanor. It'd be hard to prove this blog has hurt his reputation when he has the biggest fan base in LR. Well, behind Craig. Lol

At 7:31 PM, April 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

1:24- my name is NOT Tom Brannon and I posted the comment. I don't know him personally, I'm just sick of the hate on here. You are probably right, he doesn't care. I've seen him out in public and he and his family are very friendly unlike most anchors I've seen in public. I've watched him now for at least 10 years and feel like I know him.

At 7:38 PM, April 21, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tom is on the air at 9:14am so I don't think he could comment- or cares. But I have to agree this blog is filled with bitter, hateful, childish comments. Instead of hash out the news biz comments, it's more about name calling, which also takes place on the kindergarten playground.

All any of them are doing is just taking what the NWS sends them and changing it a little (guessing) so it looks like they are actually forecasting.

It's just a show that anyone could do. Same as reading the news.

Don't care about local news since it's just killings and car wrecks most of the time.

Well you can turn the audio up and hear it where you are taking cover. But they all push getting on the computer and getting the info that way. They don't care! Who the heck is on face book/surfing the web while they are taking cover from the storm?

At 10:41 PM, April 23, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Also, they want you to go outside and take pictures of the tornado and lightning, but be careful. I am tired of hearing the term, "dangerous" lightning. When is there lightning that is not dangerous? Oh, the theatrics of weathercasting . . .

Meredith Mitchell stinks during severe weather. She seems so out of place and uncomfortable. Her lack of formal training really shows when there is more than one weather event going on in the area.

Her best role is updating Facebook and Twitter during severe weather; leave the live weather coverage to Ed and Tom.
