And the Storms Roll On

Well it took a bit for the Little Rock channels to go into full severe weather mode. KARK had Brett Cummins on the air along with weekend met updating viewers. Todd and Ned were on for KATV, proving their skills. KTHV had Merideth Mitchell on for the first half hour or so..touch and go. Was quite strange, Channel 11 would be in the middle of severe weather coverage then all of a sudden go back to regular programming. At around 11..or maybe even 1130 Ed Buckner (who was suppose to be on vacation) came in and anchored coverage. Hmmmm, Channel 11 needs to invest in another Met that's capable of carrying the coverage when the main Mets are off/vacationing. All in all I would say Channel 7 had the best coverage tonight....KARK second..and sorry Channel 11 last...mainly due to thier slow start.

PLEASE, take Pam Baccam off the desk! I can't watch her stammer anymore! UM, UM, UM, UM,

REALLY!

Unfortunately, she is not ready to anchor like that, but who the heck else would they put in there? 11 messed up by hiring a bunch of amateurs and don't have enough talent to fall back on to fill in. It's not really Pam's fault. Maybe Stephanie should fill in?

Easy fix, and I'm not in the news biz. Put Ashley on M-F, and put Pam on the weekends until they get their morning show back together. Pam can't ad lib, and seems too nervous to even try. Why would that be so hard?

KTHV's talent pool is slim. I usually watch them in the morning and the week of Spring Break when everybody was off and they were scrambling to put a crew together it was almost too painful to watch.

KATV has two of their anchorettes pregnant so Alyson Courtney's non-compete should end about the time the other gals are off on maternity leave.

Fox 16 had a few technical issues but overall I thought they did a nice job with the severe weather coverage.

What bugs me is 11 puts the amateurs doing the head story of the night. Come on put your strongest person there. They have a gal by the last name Duffie that just stumbles all through reading a prompter. then there's that new guy that does the same. The Siegal guy seems to do a solid job and he's the one I'd let have more stories. It's just painful to watch the newbies stumble and stumble but yet get the story of the night. Sit them down in front of a prompter for a week and let them get it right!

Shouldn't the producer be blamed for the screw-ups last night on THV? I didn't see Meredith push a button that interrupted her and put Letterman back on the air.

It becomes very obvious that 11 is improperly staffed, especially during breaking news and severe weather. I agree, Siegal is solid and seems to understand what he's covering. Steed is getting better. Monet is phoning it in; you can tell by her on air presentation that she just doesn't care anymore. Cross' strength seems to be shooting video; his voice is not suited for reporting news. He's hard to listen to (has a tendency to yodel) and he just doesn't "look" like on air talent. Clark and Hutson are improving also but they have a ways to go. Duff's delivery is annoying, but she does manage to do a standup during her packages. Baccam is a capable reporter but totally stinks up the place on the anchor desk; they'd better either train her to anchor or stick to using her in the field. Abubey is OK; it's hard reporting live and she does as good a job as one can, especially in the AM.

When you hire people for cheap, after they get better they leave at the first chance they get. That's how you create a rotating door of talent. KTHV has been turned into a beginner shop. It used to be to get to market 56, you needed to start somewhere like Jonesboro or Fort Smith. LR stations are doing its audience a disservice by allowing ultra glowing green reporters to deliver news to hundreds of thousands of viewers.

If they don't get Tom somebody suitable to fill in until they finalize talent on the a m show, he's probably gone baby gone too out of frustration. He is the face of morning tv and if he leaves, THV could not recover. Don't know him personally, but I hope he is happy there.

When I met meredith mitchell at an event she was cute in person but she doesn't look or sound good on air.

Im sorry but I don't trust her telling me the weather.
she doesn't seem comfortable with severe weather.

I couldn't agree more. She & Mitchell need additional training\help, BAD. Experience is usually the best teacher but those two need something more. One on one's with (what's left of) senior staff. Required outside training. Something. I honestly can't believe their work is considered acceptable.

I thought Tom was joking when he first mentioned other people filling during the week. Now I find out it's true. Has Melissa quit as well?

Why would Ed have to come in on his vacation to fill in? I remember reading sometime last year that THV hired another person (some lady that lives in Sherwood\Jacksonville) for that very reason. I guess she must have quit as well.

Yes, why not Stephanie? She's great and by far one of the (very) few polished staff they have remaining.

As adorable as I think Eady is, I have a feeling her inexperience is going to grate my nerves just as much as Baccam and Mitchell.

I totally agree!!! Who would ever hire Jessica Duff and think it would be a good idea to put her on the air. AWFUL.

On top of that, who decided out of the million MMJs they have to give Jessica Duff the title of 'fitness reporter' when she is the chubbiest on camera person at THV. I haven't seen her in person, but she has one of those odd shaped bodies.

When she talks it is like nails on a chalk board. Not even to say, oh but she is hot, nope.

Tracy Beane? Meredith is not even a met, she's a weather anchor. 11 needs a strong 3rd met that knows how to use the tools.

At 2:02 PM, April 16, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think Duff is quite the chubbiest at THV. There is someone chubbier but we can't point out the obvious elephant in the room.

Who is wider than jessica diff on the air?

Meredith looks like she has extra weight on air, but not in person.

In person Jessica Diff looks like a stay at home mom.

What about the new girl Lisa Hutson. Haven't bumped into her but I can tell you her clothes look like they're from Dollar General and three times to big.

Damn, there are some hateful biotches on this board. Glad I don't call any of you "friends".

Just wanted to point out that Lauren Trager is looking so fantastic since losing some weight. She and the other girls at 4 just seem to know how to dress their bodies and look put together.

KTHV's Jessica Duff isn't chubby at all. And she's quite athletic. She's short so she gets pegged as plump? Sounds like some people are just hating on her.

Here is a clue in case you don't know. "Mets" don't mean anything. Just a title that they got somewhere. Weather readers rip the copy off the NWS and change it a little and read it to the viewers. Television "Mets" don't have a clue as to the weather until they check what the NWS is predicting. There are no weather service tools at the stations other then the radar and anyone with half sense can read that at home.

It doesn't matter that Jessica Duff is "athletic" in person. This is still a visual medium and she looks chubby on the air. But it's her voice that annoys me--it's grating. I think she started at THV in an off-air position, but got moved to on-air stuff, because hey--they'll put anybody on the air over there.

Little Rock as a whole is turning into a small market, a place where people fresh out of school can work for next to nothing, produce a sub-par news product. All LR stations are guilty of hiring green reporters but KTHV 11 seems to be the biggest offender. From what I've heard, these people are so desperate to "be on TV" they sign 3 year contracts for peanuts (sounds kinda like indentured servitude). Plus, they must shoot their own video. They could easily hire someone with experience but they seem to be obsessed with exploiting people and completely draining them. Just read where Gannett wants employees to take week long unpaid furloughs again this year.

But it's the little things that bug me when you put unseasoned people on air and expect them to do stellar news reports. Mispronouncing words, not knowing the difference between larceny, robbery and burglary, producers who write in false presence tense ("A man is shot during a fight last night"), etc. I'd expect this in Jonesboro, even Shreveport. But Little Rock is a market where just years ago we had people like BJ Sams, Steve Barnes, Anne Jensen, Doug Krile, etc. Now, we must listen to Pam Baccam stammer, stumble and stutter her way through poorly written copy. Or Ashley Blackstone scream the news of the weekend. Or BJ Steed do his unimpressive ultra fake anchor wannabe voice.

And hiring Miss Arkansas to host the morning show? I heard the day after the general manager announced this genius move he bolted for the Gannett owned station in North Carolina. I predict Eady's appeal will fade with viewers after the February 2012 book. For KTHV's sake I hope she sign a contract. Otherwise they will be stuck with a very expensive mistake for years.

The weather garden is an innovative and unique concept but its execution is all wrong. The little shack they have where they do interviews looks like something that sits in the woods behind a larger house. And the chroma key they use outdoors is plagued with shadows and improper lighting, which produces shadows, which causes the color keying to not work properly. And featuring a cat on newscasts? Puzzling, but people seem to like it. Maybe KATV can get a big Rottweiler and name it "Darrel the Angry Weather Dog". Ratings gold, my friends...

KTHV needs to get into shape. No one is mentoring these reporters; at least if they were getting guidance from more experienced people.

11 will lose their audience if they dont get better reporters.

Bottom line.

At 12:59 AM, April 18, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They aren't reporting anything but shootings, robberies and house fires anyway. Who watches local news except to get the weather and maybe some sports scores? The new anchorettes are clogging up the system.

Aside from weather, and maybe local sports, what does local news offer anymore? Thanks to Twitter and Facebook, we already know what we need to know long before the show hits the air!

I actually like watching THV. Pam Baccam is smart and pretty. Ashley has a good on-air presence. Jessica Duff is improving. Lisa Hutson looks like the girl next door. Ebone is a good reporter. And the two guys are solid. And I think of all of the evening anchors do a good job—very entertaining to watch.

Someone said - "Liz Massey is Massive"

I don't see Liz getting any smaller. It is very distracting because when you flip the channel the other women are slim and attractive. No offense becuase she can't change this (can if she loses some weight), but her face is huge and her hair do makes her look huge.

Someone else said - "11 will lose their audience if they dont get better reporters."

11 won't get new better reporters soon because all of them are new or have only been there a year into their 3-year contract.

What? Jessica Duff was first hired for a position off camera? Who would let her on air? Talk about desperate!

If Wes joins 7 they will be like 4 in the mornings with to many anchors and not enough people in the field.

Seriously channel 4 are 3 anchors necessary. Plus they have Tracy Douglass and it seems they don't have a place for her. Put someone out in the field to give us coverage of our community.

I did not say Tracy was on in the morning everyday. However, Tracy has filled in on the morning show as a weather reader and reporter during their snow coverage.

It just seems that having Matt, Mallory and Wendy anchor is to many. Let Mallory and Wendy anchor. Get rid of Mike Francis and let Meteorologist Matt give us the forecast.
