Nexstar Throws the Ax

This from the tip jar: Nexstar is at it again. Today Nexstar officially announced it is laying off all of the Master Control Operators in Shreveport and Monroe, and shipping all of the Master Control operations to the hub at KARK in Little Rock. These newest lay offs take effect at midnight July 1st.

And read in TV Newsday Nexstar is spending $20 million to buy the CBS in Green Bay, WI and the CBS in Marquette, MI.

How many people do they have in Master Control . . . probably one or two.

Management's answer to getting rid of employees.

Unless you are sales, get out of broadcasting while you are young and get a real job that you can retire from

Yes, Nexstar did buy those two stations. It is not final yet buy Nexstar is also about to buy KMSS Fox 33 in Shreveport which they have been toying with buying since 2000.

Master Control for KTAL has five full time operators, not one or two. Lee, Chris, and Antonio have been there almost 3 years. Rick has been there 9 years, and C.L. has been there 49 years.

Looks like Nexstar is not giving KTAL the credit it deserves. KTBS and KSLA are excelling while KTAL just sits there

Soon, all they'll have in shreveport is a sales staff and a transmitter.

You are so right. Who wants to take bets that news and production are next to go to Little Rock?

At 1:38 PM, April 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The next department to move to Little Rock needs to be promotions. Hell, don't produce their own daily promos so why are they even there? What do they do?

At 1:42 PM, April 08, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Amen to that!!!

Regardless how you feel about KTAL, it is a shame people are being let go. It will be interesting to see how Master Control is operated.
As far as promotions, I would like to see them do more. I belive that KSLA has the best, followed by KTBS. When breaking news happens KSLA is ready to promote the coverage during and after. It takes KTAL nearly a week to produce anything unless it has two certain people in it. I am not blaming those two people, I am blaming the management and promotions. They do need a change there.

If they operate master control like they operate traffic it will be horrible.

Yes, it's a shame.
Television used to be a good career.
I would not recommend going into television to anyone now.

Well of broadcasting is not that bad, but I would not recommend working for Nexstar to any one. Yes, it is true that other broadcasting company's are laying people off. However, none of them are laying off as bad as Nexstar. They did not earn the name Death Star for nothing.

Don't know that much about the other Nexstar stations.
I like working at KARK. I think most people who work here like it.
I've had some bad days but that's TV news. 4 is a good place to be.

I feel so bad for the MCO's. I was in their first lay offs two years ago so I know what you are going through. At least they gave you a lot more warning then they gave all of us.

At 6:46 AM, April 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The best thing they could do is move the news operation to Little Rock it would be a lot better than we have now.

At 12:23 PM, April 09, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It is all being handled by KARK in Little Rock and withing five (5) years that will be mostly automated and layoffs will occur there too. If you are young and thinking about retirement (which you are probably not at your age) you should get out of broadcasting before you are thrown out by management. Sales will be the place to be and soon "spots" will be sold over the Internet.

So . . .

Channel 4 has also laid off a director that was there for 30+ years. He was the senior director in the market. He trained alot of the directors in the market today.

Good place to be? Oh, really . . . look around you and see what has/is happening to seasoned veterans. The worst day you will have is when they tell you they don't need your services any longer. Trust me, you won't see it coming. That's the good part.

Oh, so things at KARK are not that great after all? Well welcome to the Death Star family.

Nexstar is not stopping with just master control. Other departments are going to be consolidated so get out now while you still can.

Good luck guys. I hope you find something much better then what you have now. No telling how long it will be before the rest of us are laid off too.

Your negativity is not my point of view. Sorry your life sucks. I won't apologize if I enjoy my job in broadcast news and am willing to adapt as things change.

At 2:31 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK folks, lets calm down. The point of this post is that an entire department is being eliminated and people are being laid off. We need to address that issue.

At 3:33 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

We are sorry our colleagues are losing their jobs in master control. However, new technology is eliminating jobs in all sorts of industries not just broadcasting. And most companies are trying to figure out how to make a profit or be more profitable. And if you read the trades it seems meeting profit expectations in our businesses is getting more difficult. There are still good jobs in broadcasting. Maybe not the highest paying jobs but these days a job is a job and I appreciate having one. And to the previous posters point I also know I may need to adapt, grow my skills, or move to stay relevant and employed in the TV business.

At 4:08 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is true, however, broadcasting in general is declining so growing your skill set and relocating will not keep you in the business for the long term.

I wish the master control operators the best of luck with their future jobs. You may want to seriously consider another field.

At 4:44 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Some are talking bad about Nexstar, but KARK has laid off a fraction of those cut loose at Albritton's KATV and Gannette's KTHV.

At 5:53 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, but neither of those stations are hubs like we are. If we were not a hub we would be in the same boat at our sister stations.

At 8:08 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then you all should be glad you're a hub and stop bitching.

At 8:10 PM, April 13, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Robert Addington is the director. He was the only one, so no one is safe. People think if you work with news you'll be safe, unless you're a long term employee.

At 9:53 AM, April 14, 2011, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only "safe" people are the sales people, yet they tend to float around in the business. If they can sell TV time they can sell cars, furniture, newspaper ads, etc. They can adapt. Where is a TV director going to get a job that he/she has been doing for X number of years? Another station is the only option. If you are in TV now, get out while you can and without management surprising you. It will happen to everyone.

At 3:41 PM, April 14, 2011, Anonymous Rick Hadwin said...

I would like to thank those of you who have posted comments sympathetic to us master control operators. I appreciate it.

With 18 years in broadcasting and production I never thought this would happen. The fact there had never been lay offs in the business until the past few years was one of the minor reasons why I got in to the business. If I knew then what I know now, I would have never gotten into the business in the first place.

For decades you could stay at one station until retirement. You will not see a CL with 49 years, or a Mrs. Byrd with 46 years of service at one station any more. Over the past few years I have seen more and more of my colleagues getting out of the business and going in to other fields. With my current reality I may or may not be joining them.

I have read all of the previous comments. Most of them are correct. I do agree with the previous post that sales is the only department that can adapt and can take a sales job any where selling any thing. If we non-sales staff stay in the business we most likely will have to relocate. That is not a problem for a lot of people, but who knows how long the job at the new station will last before the same lay offs follow you there. Nexstar seems to be buying up every station they can. With the hub network they have set up there are less and less jobs in the business for us.

I wish all of my colleagues the best of luck in their futures. Whether that is in broadcasting or not.

Well Hadwin... nice comments but let's get real about some of them.
Ms. Byrd was H. Lee Bryant's right arm. H. Lee was brought in years ago by WHECO Media to keep costs low and that's all he did. KTAL's legacy as a suck-ass TV station is because of him. Byrd did his bidding and she got to stick around when Nexstar bought KTAL and had dingleberry Dan Bates as GM. Bate's MO at every station he was ever at was to find the snitch in the business office who had something to lose (her job) to tell him what was going on. His management style was by fear and he left a lot of scorched earth in his wake. So let's not wax too nostalgic about TV veterans who had staying power. In TV people get to stick around for 2 reasons: they either have something management likes or they are good at screwing other people around them. And in some ways...both are one and the same.
Get real...wake up and smell the coffee.

I read Rick's comment and did not get that at all Bitter Betty. Take it for what it is. An open comment on his experience and on broadcasting in general. Everyone knows KTAL has always been, and will always be a shit station, no matter who's the owner or the GM. I am actively looking for another job before my department gets consolidated and I get laid off too.

Nexstar is a shit company. I'm glad I got out of there when I did. Even at the so-called hubs (which I never send a resume too) I bet the pay is the same shit-pay they offered to employees before the upgrades. That company is so SICK that they are actually going around bragging about this like its the best thing that ever happened for them. "We are a firm believer in the hub-spoke model from a master control, business and trafficking perspective," explains Blake Russell, senior vice president of station operations at Nexstar. What a bullshit low-life SCUM of a company. Their stench is so foul and sour that they set a bad precedent to other companies in the industry that follow in their footsteps. I will continue to write to all of the big networks to PULL their affiliations from these rundown and low-rated and poor excuse pieces of shits they pass off as local tv-stations. The the networks need to improve their bottom line too, you know!

I went there in 1996 to 2001
I went back in 2002 to 2003 I did not stay away a long time off and on I worked there 16 years but nexstar do not want to pay me that far back I can understand if I stayed away a long time but I did not.

They just don't want to pay for all that time I do not trust nexstar they are evil. they is like a snake they wait a long time and after that they move in for the kill.
