U of A and KATV at Odds Over Who Should Be The Voice of Razorbacks
Looks as though there's quite a disagreement between KATV GM Dale Nicholson and University of Arkansas Athletic Director Frank Broyles. Arkansas Business.com details the feud in a lengthy article. There is a very simple, clear-cut solution to all of this:
FIRE HOUSTON NUTT!
1) Steve Sullivan
2) Craig O'Neill
Why are these names not being mentioned for the voice of the football radio razorbacks?
Sully is a 7 employee with the star power. What is his play-by-play skills?
Craig O'Neill is at 11, but that could easily be changed with a contract buyout by 7. Craig knows the history and heritage and understands the passion Razorback football listeners expect.
Why is Steve Sullivan not in the picture as KATV's talent choice? Why doesn't KATV raid THV and get Craig O'Neal as the new voice. It's like Dale Nicholson and Frank Broyles want to go out with one grand scale pissing contest.
Barrett or Inman or Sullivan or O'Neill I dont really care, they would all be excellent choices, but come on, if this goes to court, I will go crazy.

None of the above.
Inman and Barrett are the two front-runners.
I want neither, but if I had to pick, I would choose Inman (again, given the choice between he and Barrett).
Barrett did a perfect job of positioning himself in the past 6 month, primarily by aligning himself with the athletic department through thick and thin.
The problem is that you can't hire a guy to do play-by-play who is a divider.
It was a smart play by Chuck.
You just can't have a play-by-play guy who people hate because of retarded comments he had made in the prior half year.
We need to go out of state.
Cut off all ties and get someone who can do the job without being a douche.
I can say right now that, if I am not able to attend the game in person, I will NOT be listening to the radio broadcast if Chuck Barrett is calling the game.
The Big Pard is smoking crack if he thinks he can call the talent shots at ARSN. Ain't going to happen. No matter what he thinks that network is JFB's to do with how he wishes INCLUDING yanking it from KATV. From the moment Inman came to LR insiders knew there was a shot he would have a chance to do Play-By-Play ESPECIALLY since it was known that Broyles didn't care for Sullivan (for whatever reason). Dale and his cast of bootlicking yes men should have never made Inman move to news even though there was a shortage of quality Male Anchors in the business. Their lack of vision is Barrett's gain on this one. Besides if someone ever heard Chuck do a Baseball Broadcast they would realize he has the credentials for and deserves a shot at the FB Play-by-Play.
Ready for war AND KATV loses this battle and the Razorbacks. Get ready KARK and THV to pull out the checkbooks. This will get ugly. Dale always gets what he wants, except this time - Arrogant Fool!
Sully is an A-state grad. Frankie can't have an Indian (soon to be politically correct mascot) in his Razorback broadcast booth.
As I recall Sully did color for the ASU basketball team while in college. I'm sure he also did some play-by-play for minor sports like baseball.
Also--Craigers is an ASU attendee too (i don't think he graduated)--that and being a THV employee makes him a non-candidate. I do enjoy his pre-game razzle-dazzle at the games.
Just my thoughts, yours may differ.
Frank says he wants a guy with experience broadcasting Razorback sporting events. He says he wants someone with statewide appeal, but mainly someone familiar to fans in NW Arkansas.
What Frank really wants is the power to pick. He probably feels he has earned it. What he should want is someone with a great voice.
If it is down to Inman and Barrett, who has the better voice? Statewide recognition will instantly come. Neither Barrett nor Inman has much experience calling FOOTBALL games (calling baseball games is totally different). Both has pitched in on ARSN broadcasts (Inman hosting the pre-game and post-game and Barrett helping in the booth). One has been a sports anchor, the other has hosted a sports talk show.
But remember...it's radio. It's about the voice. Paul Eells had a great broadcasting voice. Paul grew up in Iowa and was the broadcaster for the lowly Commodores. Had Paul called a Razorback game before he got here? Did he have name recognition before he got here?
No, and no.
But he had great pipes.
Stop bickering and pick the best voice!
I really liked the line where Dale said Scott did the LA-Monore game with a very positive response. In which Broyles replied no one heard the game.
KATV has done this before. They got Craig O'Neill barred from doing the PA during home games.
KATV is in a no win situation. If they end up winning with Inman in the booth, the contract won't get renewed. So they might as well let this one go. If they looked at the research, viewers don't care that the voice of the Razorbacks works for you or not.
If and when the contract with KATV is pulled don't look for a local TV station to fill the void. Too much capitol to invest for a small return. Look for a company like Leerfield to step in and take over the network.
Inman should have stuck with sports to begin with. People in Arkansas identify him with news and not sports. Unless Nicholson moves him back to sports, which he'd need to be there to cover the razorbacks, Barrett should be choice. I'm behind Broyles on this one. KATV wants the cake and they wanna eat it too. And this could be the begginning of the end for KATV operating ARSN.

He did chick-hoops play-by-play, and is an alum of their RTV program.
I only hope KHOG quits airing the SEC toilet game of the week in favor of the ABC regional telecast so we can see the 2:30 kick offs in HD on time. Nothing is more frustrating than tape-delayed football games that look like they were recorded on a VHS tape. Thank goodness Fox 24 picked up the early games that aren't even shown by KHOG.
I think we should all email the all of the branches of the military and let them know how little Chuck Barrett respects the armed services in this country. He downplayed why they are at war by saying that the people who are against Houston Nutt are worse than the terrorists that bombed the World Trade Center. Those were his exact words and I heard him say it on the air. He totally showed his ignorance and lack or respect for the military by making those horrible comments.
He should not be the Voice of the Razorbacks. He is a terrible man and a poor role model for our young people.
I will never listen to another game again if he is selected.
Well, for years one had to be employed by KATV to be the "Voice of the Hogs" and the same will be true in this choice.
Craig O'Neill? You gotta be kidding. The station would have to add at least 30db attenuation in his mic to begin with.
Whomever the choice is, the person will be working at KATV and my money is on ole Frank's choice.
What about Mike Nail? When he was named Interim, I thought he'd be a shoe-in for the job. He's great on the air, has been dedicated to the Razorbacks for years and years and is great to work with....
Chuck Barrett does not deserve to be the Voice of the Razorbacks. He has a poor character and is a terrible person. I would not want anyone who does not take the military seriously. He obviously thinks the military is a joke.
We need someone with honor in this position and Chuck Barrett is not a good person at all.
Why isn't Keith Jackson being considered as the voice of the Razorbacks? I think he did a great job as a sidekick to Paul Eells when Paul was in the box. I think Keith should be considered.
Thoughts:
1. Chuck Barrett looks like a hillbilly. Do we want a guy who probably doesn't own a tie and will call the hog games in an old shirt, blue jeans, tennis shoes and a cap? Talk about a polar opposite to Paul Eels.
2. If KATV or any other station is worried about their "news" people losing their credibility, maybe they should stop endorsing political candidates, having a sponsored money contest during their news programs, and being the whipping boys for any chamber of commerce that whispers a few dollars in their ear. That era is gone--no one cares.
3. This isn't about what the fans want or what's good for the school. This is two old dudes having their last pi**ing contest before they're put to pasture.
KATV has ahd the option to boradcast numerous games on a pay per view basis and has passed because Frank aske them not to. I'm sure they will pass on this eventually.
All Frank has to say is, "Dale, I sure would hate for this to be an issue when it comes time to renew this contract."
I'd really like to see this go to court. Nothing makes Dale happier then going to court.

let's not forget that Chuck referred to Hog fans who don't see eye to eye with Nutt as terrorists. I don't think I could listen to a PBP guy who refers to any fan that doesn't share his point of view as a terrorist.
You can never be certain KATV won't lose ARSN. With a new AD coming in and more players in the college sports radio business, KATV will have a fight if it's ever open for bidding.

Chuck Barrett does not deserve to be the play-by-play man. He is a terrible man with a poor moral character. He has no respect for the military, the government, or for anyone. He is a horrible person and Frank Broyles should be ashamed for trying to blackmail KATV into hiring this horrible and unethical person.
Can't you guys see that Chuck says things for effect? Keeps fans coming back for more, keeps the ball of discussion rolling.......
He is a great person and wonderful role model for kids.

Note to Frank and Pard, fans don't give a damn about who the voice is, as long as they can do the job! Stop wasting time and money as well as our patience by fighting this asinine turf war. Chuck totally disrepected every military person with his comment. He is not a good person and is not of good moral character. His is an abysmal role model for our kids. Chuck in the most unprofessional person I have ever heard on the radio. He does not deserve the job.
Scott is professional and a great role model just like Paul. Scott is the man for the job.

All I can say is yell all you want. It will do you no good. Frank has a plan to get me in this position and no matter what you say or do, I will be the Voice of the Razorbacks. I am the best radio voice in the business and I deserve this job. Most of you who post on this board are too stupid to realize that fact.
I can say what I want and it does not matter because I have Frank Broyles wrapped around my little finger.

Seriously you think Fox has more money to spend then the Allbritton family? It's not a huge money maker for KATV they overpay. It's all about the prestige. They want to be known has the home of the hogs. Why do you think they pushed so ahrd for Inman. In the end it came to down it was more important to keep the relationship. I'll bet you dolalrs to donuts there's an extension for several more years that comes with Chuck being the voice.
Fox and their "deep pockets"...(wait while I stop laughing)...will never get a shot to bid for the games. Now Clear Channel radio might be a different story, but Fox is no longer a clear channel property.
