KAIT Making Changes to Newscasts
Source: KAIT.com KAIT recently conducted an in-depth research project asking LOCAL viewers for their feedback on what they want from a newscast. These are people who live and work right here in Region 8. If you were one of the respondents we want to thank you for your willingness to participate in the research project and for your candid response.Consider This...
We spent a considerable amount of time and money asking for your opinion, and if we want to remain relevant, we need to listen to your comments. You'll notice we are tweaking some of our programming to provide you, our viewers, what you requested.
I encourage you to watch the programs to see the improvements over the next few weeks. Even though most improvements are subtle changes, some of them should be noticeable. We certainly hope so.
Our focus is to be the first place you look for local news & local weather... the news & weather that affects Region 8.
Again, thanks to all of you who participated in the research project. If you were not part of the survey let us know what you think and how we can improve. We may not be able to implement all the suggestions, but we'll certainly listen to your ideas.
Some of the obvious changes...no LIVE interviews during the 5pm newscast AND NO sports during the 6pm newscast.

What they are saying is 400 people don't want to have interviews promoting events that benefit the community. These 400 people also say sports basically has no place in a newscast except for 10 p.m. If KAIT only had some in-market competition.
Raise your hand if you watch a 6pm newscast for sports. 95% of all the games haven't even started yet. It's a smart move, especially if the viewers asked for it.
Local news has to change to stay relevant with the viewers.
The days of this is how we do the news because it's the way it has always been done are over. Look at KATV the once dominate station in the state and the country for that matter has not kept up with the times. They keep doing the same newscast they've been doing for the past 50 years and they're now losing viewers almost as fast as the paper.
No, 11:31, what the 400 people are saying is that interviews promoting events doesn't belong in the 5:00pm show. Put them on Good Morning Region 8 or Midday -- what other station in the country does interviews in the 5?
Sports, while important, I also wonder whether or not a market 180+ station should have it in the 6. I mean, for local sports, you have ASU (which doesn't play 'til after 6) and you have high schools (ditto). That leaves national stuff that, really, who cares about in Jonesboro?
I do give them credit for doing their own research and not listening to the crud consultants spit out.
You jacked my homemade graphic!
Hmm..Ryan, someone e-mailed me the information AND the graphic. Wasn't aware the graphic came from your weather blog.
I'm just messing with yah!
Why is Ned Perme's face tanned and his hands white? This question has been asked before but no definitive answer.
This was tried back in the 90s. And the elements came back.
Bring back Terry Wood!!!
Competition would make that station disappear faster than an investigative reporter near the swine football team.
Someone should start putting all the technical errors that station has in just one newscast on Youtube but the storage capacity would be exceeded after the first day.
Has Glenn Marrini left? He has not been on for several nights. Craig Rickert has been doing the news and sports.
What ever happened to Terry Wood anyway?
I noticed they only do sports on some nights now. Can anyone explain when they do it and when they don't? Haven't seen it at six at all. Guess those ASU' yahoos will just have to read a paper. Good Luck!
These changes are just like local papers not printing Stock reports and the small print with all the scores from the night before.
Seriously who checks the paper for stock quotes anymore? If you have stocks you generally stay on top of the value with the internet or a cable channel. Day old stock values are a waste of space.
Same thing for day old sports scores. If you realy want to know how a team did you'll find it. Long before the paper arrives at your door.
This is a very smart move to have a newscast that is relevant to the viewers, not the boradcasters. The sooner broadcasters realize the viewer is now in control the better. For some old school stations, it may be too late when they figure this out.
The brodacast/media world is changing, it's changing now, it's changing fast, and it doesn't care how you used to do it or how good you once were.
but sports doesn't have to be just scores and highlights...God forbid they actually act like reporters and find stories within the realm of sports...pretty sure even ESPN doesn't just show highlights...get creative in the local surroundings. I'm pretty sure that sports is 80% of the reason that anyone who even watches K8 tunes in, since no other station really covers Arkansas State or any high schools from the region either.
The problem sounds like they don't have the people to report the sports even if they wanted to. Didn't they get rid of Mitch a couple weeks ago and Craig has been doing sports. Maybe there is no one else who knows anything about sports there.
Changes that include dusting off antiques and putting them on the anchor desk. The concept of girl on girl action sounds good in my head but when those two are on set together it made me shudder. Couldn't wait for Ryan Vaughn to break up the estrogen team.
Sexist much?
All the Little Rock stations do is spend half their sports time reporting on the RAZORBACKS like they were the only sports team in the state.
There are a world of sports stories out there for any station that wants to work for them.
It just appears KAIT has no interest in reporting them even if the stories are there. It's sad, they used to have a decent sports and news department.
Please name a station that does. For instance, which team won the 7A soccer tournament that was played in NW Arkansas today, Saturday, May 5, 2007. LR Central played in it, was it covered by any Little Rock station?
Covering a college (U of A or ASU) is a little more important to cover than your son's soccer team. I am sure little Timmy and his friends played real well. Don't be too upset when KARK doesn't come out to cover Timmy's big Quiz Bowl Teams win either.
Interesting that she went from tv star to checkout girl. Wonder what happened? There was a rumor about her and little Mitch.
Covering a college (U of A or ASU) is a little more important to cover than your son's soccer team.
Actually if you had the intelligence to check it's girls soccer and your type of thinking (or lack of it) is what is wrong with today's "TV" sports reporting.
Oops my bad, it's girl's soccer. They should drop everything and cover it in that case. How is the swim team shaping up this year?
didn't they use to date? Inner-station romance!
Yep a little more than dating I think.....if you know what I mean.
Way to go, GOOD NEIGHBORS I CAN TURN TO!
Well certainly not behavior you want from people you trust to bring you the news.
