Axe Falls at KFSM

This from a tipster: 10 people were fired from KFSM TV-5 today. The new owners are apparently taking over next week. Fred McLure and Robert Houston (the only on air persona to be let go) of Arklahoma outdoors were among those let go. This means the KFSM will no longer be producing the locally very popular Arklahoma outdoors. Others fired included the Fort Smith receptions, people in the traffic dept, two producers, as well several people up in Fayetteville..including the station manager up there.

If you will go back and look at the original postings when it was announced who the new owners were, you will see that they were told how great this would be and that they didn't want to change anything. I feel awful for those who lost their jobs but watch and see this isn't over yet.

This is how it always works. New owners tell local management not to worry that all is well. New owners then let a few go and the dust settles. A few weeks later the GM is gone and then the "NEW" boss comes in and all kinds of changes start happening.

What a joke! This is the best thing that could probably happen to them. Not people losing jobs but radical change. They need to catch up with the world. You can't keep doing the same thing and expect that the audience will slow down with you. I think the other stations have improved a ton. This should raise the bar for the whole market.

At 12:08 AM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fred and Robert were the two responsible for the footage of the Massachusetts hate crime suspect getting in a shootout with Arkansas police. They put KFSM on teh international map with that. How can they let them go so easily? They don't know what they're missing

At 12:41 AM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You don't get it. It's called business. Do you think for a moment that someone several states away made that call? Each of the stations were given a body count to cut and the locals determine who those will be. The next round is the ones or one or made that local decision.

Let's do the wave, yall! Who makes that stuff up?

I'll take 5's promos over all the others in NWA anytime. Their editing is far superior to the other stations. 40's always got the same look, at least 5 is doing something different. I've enjoyed the recent promos they've made.

I'm also surprised with the number of people let go. Sadly, that's business.

At 5:01 PM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why would you be surprised. They're fatter than any other in town. Don't know about their product but KNWA does the best on look of promos. Actually some good thought on them too. I think they have a guy that hasn't been there long.

Anyone know that Garrett Lewis has been chasing tornadoes today for a competitor of KFSM's sister station in Oklahoma City? He is chasing for KWTV and KFSM's sister is KFOR.

At 11:12 PM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good for him. He does a great job for this market. I know he wants to stay in the area because this is home but OKC is pretty close. Keep those options out there.

At 11:30 PM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah, great for Garrett. But is he allowed to chase for a competitor?

At 11:57 PM, May 06, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Garrett is allowed to chase for network affiliated stations.. and KWTV & KOTV are CBS affilate's just like KFSM.

At 12:00 AM, May 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Now that KFSM isn't owned by NYT, he doesn't have to chase for KFOR.

At 12:10 AM, May 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They were both sold to the same company, which means he would more than likely still be held to chasing for a station from within company. KWTV, while a CBS station, is not a station affiliated through ownership with KFSM. Just taste would state you chase for your own company instead of for a competitor, even if it is in another market.

These are the people who used to run clear channel. There's no huge strategy to win here. They are just cutting the budget. The Times had a chance to sell these stations to one of several good companies but decided that squeezing a few extra dimes out of the deal was more important than the integrity of the stations and the employees being left behind.

A decision to shift north will be a disaster for KFSM and the market as a whole. It will leave three stations fighting over half the pie and put 40/29 in a position to snag the river valley by default once the outcry comes from fort smith about being abandoned.

How you treat people, whether they are your employees or your viewers, always comes back to you.

Garrett is trying to take over for Gary England? Yeah right. I am sure that is over the dead bodies of every met at KWTV right now, waiting for their shot to get his job. Jed, Zach, Michael and Carrie would throw a fit if KWTV hired from outside, especially from a small market, to fill Gary's job if and when he retires. That is stupid. I am sure Garrett was probably just doing it for fun and experience. But he still should have been working for his sister station.

As much as I like Garrett, I just can't imagine him replacing Gary and garnering the same respect.

These are all rumors. Truth is, Garrett's contract is up in a few months and he's talked with a few stations including OKC. He's keeping his options open and might not even continue in television.

At 5:45 PM, May 08, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All of the OKC chief mets are on long term contracts through at least 2012. So Garrett would have to come in as a man at the bottom and work his way up, which means unless it is in his contract that he would automatically get chief, he would be fighting with the rest of the guys at the station for the job.

KFSM will be losing the market lead soon. Many people in the River Valley and Northwest Arkansas are upset about Arklahoma Outdoors being canceled. Van is an idiot. He is nothing more than a car salesmen and its showing more and more every day. He has no idea how to effectively run a station. KFSM doesn't even have a real news director right now. Gary Darnell, come on. KFSM will soon have a new evrything at the top. They have been losing market share for a while now. If the current leadership knew how to stop it they would have already done something about it. New owners want new ideas and leadership that is willing to be aggressive. That is something that this group doesn't show signs that they have.

Personally I know channel 5 will always be number 1 because their were on the air almost 20 years before any other stations went on the air in our market and channel 5 was the first TV station in Arkansas to go on the air.

At 7:23 AM, May 09, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Garrett has great potential, and nothing against the NWA tv market, but I think he is much better than that. He should be talking to other stations and he should be moving on to a larger market. I understand Garrett is a hometown guy...but I see him either going on of three ways. One, he stays at KFSM and signs a long term deal if they are willing to shell out the cash. Two, he bolts to a larger market close by as weekend or morning meteorologist (OKC, Tulsa or Wichita perhaps?), or three, doing what Charles Salser did and getting out of the business all together and devoting his entire time to the ministry. If I were to pick any of the three it would be the latter, despite the fact that Garrett has the one of the strongest passions for meteorology I have ever seen in a person. Just my two cents.

Not bragging about your total market numbers are you? Last I checked you are getting your butt kicked where "their" target audience is. You need to read the numbers again. KFSM only finished third in NWA in one newscast. KNWA is the distant third station in every time period except 10 p.m.

KFSM also wins the total DMA in both households and demos which means $$$$. If you think that total market numbers don't count when it comes to ad sales, you aren't living in the real world. DMA ratings generate much higher values than NWA zone ratings only.

I just watched the final episode of 5Outdoors.

I'm sad to see the show go away.

I predict that the new owners will make a bunch of decisions that will turn out very poorly.

The only reason I watch KFSM is precisely and exactly because it's the only Western Arkansas station that focuses on the Fort Smith area.

I predict that by trying to grab a bigger share of the audience from the Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers area, KFSM will lose its base audience in the Fort Smith area.

I predict that this new owner will screw things up so badly that the station will close its doors in Fort Smith, and move exclusively to Fayetteville

At 8:19 AM, May 27, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You are right except the new owners have had that planned from the beginning (to move to NWA).

And what a plan moving north would be!

Hey, I know....let's focus on an ALREADY crowded marketplace even though Fort Smith is so much a part of the station's identity, mission, and base that the city's initials are part of the call letters.

Let's forgot the city wherein our station has forged an identity and audience for decades, and let's go north to be third or fourth best in an already crowded market!

Yes! What a plan! We'll make MEEEL-LEEONS of dollars playing third feeedle......(Say this all in the voice of Ren from "Ren and Stimpy," you tweeested leetle monkeee)

Muwa-ha-ha-ha-haaaaaa (Rubbing hands together maniacally). Eet weel bee the best theeeng since thee EDSEL!!!!!! The best thing since New Coke!!! Even better than the Dukes of Hazzard episodes when Coy and Vance Duke replaced Bo and Luke Duke.

Sorry, but weather lady Melissa, aka: Big Red...not professional. She sounds more like a kindergarten teacher talking to pre school kiddo's beginning a Story Time segment. She talks as if asking questions, skin tight clothing not very professional, too tight, who can take her seriously when serious weather situations are going on, she doesn't come across as trustworthy and knows what she's talking about. She should be teaching pre-schoolers. She has the voice for that ...not weather !!!

Garrett Lewis, Joe Pennington, and Darrin Bob are the most professional news people on Channel Five. We love Joe...can we have more of him? He is handsome, sharp dresser, outgoing, friendly, and knows what he is doing....Ashley is not there any longer, no offense, but someone with an addiction problem should not be in your face on the news. Just being honest. Heather does okay, as does Jay, they make a good pair on the morning news.
