ADG- KTHV to Reap Rewards from CBS Evening News with Katie Couric

Source: Arkansas Democrat/Gazette The only Arkansas angle to be found in Tuesday night’s debut of Katie Couric at the helm of the CBS Evening News was how smoothly her exit strategy - a warm smile and an authoritative shuffle of papers that were probably totally superfluous to her news delivery - segued into the 6 p.m. Arkansas broadcast of Today’s KTHV-TV, Channel 11. It led with anchorwoman Anne Jansen’s furrowed-brow account of a stray bullet that found its way into a child’s wrist over the weekend at Magic Springs.

Channel 11 is certain to reap some rewards from Couric, its new tent-pole lead-in, still grappling with her reluctantly accepted feminist mantle just as Channel 11 grapples with what to do with its increasingly feminized lineup of A-list anchors: The station soon will have Jansen, Dawn Scott and Liz Massey and barely enough news broadcasts to go around.

For her part, Couric seemed to arch an eyebrow at the implication that she should debeautify and debronze before staring into the unblinking CBS eye: The bright white of her blazer amplified how not-white Couric’s skin is.

It is probably a reflection of the still-unlevel male/female playing field that her opening segment evoked the cadence of Carrie Bradshaw’s old “I couldn’t help but wonder... ” voice-overs from Sex and the City: Introducing a meaty and exclusive report on the resurgence of the Taliban, Couric posited, “But in the war on terror, you have to wonder: Is it back to the drawing board?” (If a man had said it, nobody would have thought of Sarah Jessica Parker.)

Couric courts the treachery of the “cute” label - certainly more the province of girlishness than boyishness - when she introduces some tinkering to her Tiffany-network product by announcing, “Something new for the evening news - besides me.” We can’t remember Brian Williams being quite so self-referential in quite the same playful way when he took over for Tom Brokaw. But that has more to do with personality than sex. Worth noting will be how Channel 11 follows the lead of its lead-in and tries to make news-watching an event: Whether you find her a diva or a deliverance, when the halfhour is up, Couric has made the evening news interesting again in a way that nobody has done since Jon Stewart.

I'd rather see KATV's Beth Hunt.

The ADG compares KATIE COURIC with ANNE "Wearing Clothes My Grandmother Wouldn't Be Buried In" JANSEN?

Wow. Slow week in Kyle's office.

This is a TV blog, so let's have a quick review of newspapers 101. The paper did not make this comparison - Kyle did in his usual Sunday column, which appears in High Profile. Columns are not news stories (and High Profile definitely is not news). Columnists get to write about basically ANY TOPIC OF THEIR CHOICE and express their personal opinions. My personal opinion is that Anne's clothes are tasteful --and my grandmother likes them, too. (No, I'm not Anne!)

I agree that Katie will help the 6pm news on 11. Especially since they will have Dawn Scott back.

Why do you suppose she so happy with it and resistant to changing it?

Clothes from the 70's, delivery from the 80's, hair from the 90's.

Hello?

Oh yeah, and she's the biggest sour-puss in TV in the region.

(By Peter Johnson, USA TODAY)

Katie Couric kicked off this week in territory unfamiliar to her but familiar to the CBS Evening News: Her broadcast finished in third place Monday.

Last week, in the first few days after the former Todaystar's much-hyped debut as anchor, Evening News dominated both NBC Nightly News and ABC World News in the ratings.

But on Monday — a big news day because of the fifth anniversary of 9/11 — viewers returned NBC Nightly News to its regular first-place berth. Nightly News drew 8.3 million viewers, followed by World News with 7.9 million and CBS with 7.5 million. (By comparison, when she premiered Sept. 5, Couric drew 13.6 million viewers.)

Speaking of Anne J: "Clothes from the 70's, delivery from the 80's, hair from the 90's."

I still long for the days when Anne had the frizz job! Much younger then but oh how much fun was it to laugh til you cried at the mullet cut ball of fuzz she had on her head as she tried to come across as an oh so serious journalist "reader" to viewers yet such an arrogant b in public? The "now Anne" has simply cut off the frizzed chia-pet mullet, attempts to furrow the brows yet the botox prevents that for the most part, dresses waaaaaaaaaay to matronly(nice but spice it up honey! Stop with the "corporate look" already! NOT behooving!)
and of course the b .....well, that's not going anywhere soon..err..I mean ever.
Seriously, does anyone have ANY idea why Anne is still there except for her controlling attitude which evidently intimidates those who could rid her? I suppose it's her family connections but why must we suffer due to that?
Sure it's fun to laugh at the Marge Simpson Anne now but chiapet Anne was MUCH more fun. I swear that mullet knocked out a couple coanchors a few times when she did a "headturn laugh!" Ahhhh....memories:)
....btw....can THV not afford a SYLIST??? Too cheap or never heard the term? One has to wonder.

I think talking negative about people is wrong.I just think we need to be fair to everybody. It is just rude and wrong to talk negative about people.Because after all nobody is perfect in this world.

Hello Uptight,

Forgot the chill pill today huh?

Shouldn't that be "negativeLY?" Just wondering.....

True. Noone is perfect but if you can't laugh about some of it then you're taking life WAY too seriously. We're not talking about her having a growth on her forehead. Puleeze! I laugh myself silly over my own 80s do! WHO DOESN'T??? As far as the other?...She's a b....I'm a funny smarta** when I wanna:)...so??

Does everything in life have to be so proper and righteous? I call that not living. I refuse to walk on eggshells in life, live in fear and wonder, be miss perfect, be an a**kisser, be unable to laugh at myself and others .....among other things.

I'm not perfect nor will I ever be. I do strive however to be the best me I can be....and have learned to laugh at life's(mine, others and the worlds) imperfections along the way. Makes life a whooooole lot easier! You should try it!:)

Can you even imagine how much money goes to shrinks, docs and pharmaceutical companies these days all because we can't laugh at ourselves and others and think we have to be so "perfect"(what is that anyway?...besides yuck that is.)

Whoever invented all that political correctness stuff didn't have enough to do.....or were one of the "thinktanks" for one of the pharm. cos/shrink assns/etc....

Hang loose chickie! Life's a lot more fun that way!
