KFTA Officially Becomes FOX 24

This from a tipster: "KFTA-TV has made the switch to Fox affiliation (myfox24.com). Also, word has it that KPBI, the area's old Fox station, will become a My Network TV station and KFDF, the old UPN station, will pick up with the CW. Also, Cox Communications has dropped both of those stations from their cable systems in Northwest Arkansas and the Fort Smith area. If all of that isn't enough, Equity has filed a complaint with the FCC over the sale of KFTA to Mission Broadcasting. Looks like we have a bit of drama up in our part of the state."

What's Fort Smith doing for NBC?? KJRH or KARK??? Those are the two closest. I'd be surprised if they can get a usable signal from 51??

KNWA is still on cable, but over-the-air viewers have nothing. Same deal for Fox viewers in NWA.

That's not right. I live in Fayetteville and pick up 24 Fox over the air. I think there is some assuming going on here. I ca'nt pick up 5 or any of there other low power NW signals either.

The Funny thing is, 24 is still NBC during the Daytime (until 5pm) and late night (after 10:30 pm). They are only FOX during prime time. And they don't have the sync problems that KNWA has been having all summer.

KNWA Digital is still allegedly available in the River Valley, but who has digital t.v.? Rich Yuppies, and they have satellite recievers. Not my 83 year old aunt, living on social security who can't afford basic cable.

Well if you were a "real" niece or nephew you would spring for her $13 cable bill. You obviously have enough money to buy a computer or you are stealing from your company by using their computer during work time to post on this plog.

Since when does basic cable cost $13??? You must be living in the 80's. And you need to get off this blog.

Back to subject...Fox 24 news looks awful. Earlier may be appealing, but it's painful to watch their news. I;ll stick with 5.

This is not true. Both NBC and FOX channels are available on digital over the air in the river valley and nwa.

All 26" and larger TVs now come with a digital tuner inside and cost less than a year's subscription to basic cable. Go to circuitcity, bestbuy, wallyworld or sams and look at TVs.

Next year, all new TVs will come with built in digital tuners.

If you're OTA-only, you'll have to go digital eventually anyway. On Feb 18, 2009 all full power analog TV stations will leave the US airways forever.

Analog broadcast TV is a lame duck.

It will still be interesting to see what the FCC has to say about all this.

That aside, though, no one even knows there is a newscast there. The only people watching it are in the tv business.

It does seem like Nexstar could at least buy the poor Fox reporters some new cameras. Those things they are shooting on are antiques.

You must be living under a rock.

Lots of people have digital tvs. it works with the same ol' indoor or outdoor antennas TVs have used for years in this area. There's nothing magical about receiving it. The picture's far better than cable or sat and there's no monthly bill.

At 11:08 PM, September 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

What are you expecting the FCC to do. If they were going to do something they already would have. If you're thinking they won't approve the sale of Nexstar to Mission it does not matter. They can continue with the programming they have now. That programming is probably better than what they would get anyway. All I know is my sports will look better than on Equity and for no other reason than that, I will give the news a shot. Can't be any worse than the rest in the market. They all need a lot of work.

So much crap slung on this board, by people who have no idea what they're talking about.

The -only- reason KHBS and KFSM are higher in the overall raitings than KNWA (and by less than a point) is for seniority. All the 80 and older crowd watch them, because they've been around for decades. KFSM's look and news quality is a joke, period. The fact that KNWA does very little river valley news and still competea goes to show how piss poor the other 2 stations are.

With KFTA, it's an earlier news cast with more focus on the river valley, and looks and runs a hell of a lot better than the other two. That equals something far beyond failure.

Keep on trolling, though.

Have you not watched any of their newcasts??? They've been disasters production wise. Yeah, they've got great graphics, but when they're run seconds late...mics not turned on right...bad video...etc...early or not, people will notice their amateurs trying to compete with professionals.

Yeah 5 & 40/29 aren't perfect, but I don't see ANYONE taking over them. They've got more resources and are too far ahead of KNWA & KFTA. Sorry for those working for them, but you're stuck at a college looking station. That must suck...

At 3:53 PM, September 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KFSM dominates the River Valley in both 18-49 and 25-54. If you think KFTA is going to challenge them any time this decade, you aren't living in the real world.

KFTA is going to have to put on a product that can compete for younger viewers against CBS and ABC prime. I've seen no sign of them doing that.

As for my comment about no one even knowing they there, I wasn't talking about digital tv. I was simply pointing out that the station has no identity at all in the River Valley. And, after what limited promotion they did, their first couple of newscasts were disasters.

Fox's own research shows that most viewers, if they even sample a new newscast, will only give it 5 to 10 minutes to decide if it is good or bad. If Fox is right and that is true, November is not going to be pretty for KFTA.

Oh, and by the way, if you think KNWA is only 1 point behind market wide, you are nuts.

It is a two-horse race between KFSM and 40/29 and KNWA is nowhere close. One point???? Try 10 to 20.

At 4:27 PM, September 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here are the actual market wide ratings for the Fort Smith/Fayetteville/Springdale/Rogers DMA:

5 p.m.

KFSM 11
KHBS 9
KNWA 2

6 p.m.

KFSM 11
KHBS 10
KNWA 2

10 p.m.

KFSM 12
KHBS 10
KNWA 3

How does that equal one point behind for KNWA???

At 5:04 PM, September 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm guessing that the numbers the other poster is talking about is not total market just up north. I hate to agree with them but if you are only counting nwa they are a player and it's a three way race. Like it or not KNWA's target doesn't include the river valley and shouldn't for them.

At 11:29 AM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

In NWA, they are only a player at 10 p.m. They get pounded at 5 and 6. Part of their morning news pulled a ZERO rating.

That poster also very specifically said "overall ratings" and mentioned the River Valley in his/her argument.

The fact is that the battle in the market for every newscast, 7 days a week, is between 40/29 and KFSM in both total market and NWA. Only at 10 p.m. does KNWA show even a glimmer of hope and then only in NWA. One blip in one newscast does not a competitor make.

At 12:26 PM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The talent is not so good. Have you seen some of the reports! Come on guys try and hit a mark once in a while. Don't know if it is that they have to many new people or what? Best of luck to them they have no where to go but up.

At 12:44 PM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Up north the 10p is "the" newscast. The traffic makes the 5 and 6 less important because the younger more sought after audience is not home yet. I believe that KNWA will never compete in those early newscast for that reason. You ask folks on the street who they watch and the younger folks like KNWA and the older gen likes the other two. KNWA needs a lot of help though with their morning show. This is a place where they could gain some ground if they worked on it.KFSM is really coming on in nwa. I think 29 has the most to lose. It might take a while but they need to make a move now to protect their future.

"Also... I know several people in Fort Smith who cannot pick up Fox24 on antenna."

Get a decent antenna. If you still can't pick it up, get a digital TV cause they work a lot better than analog.

You'll have to have a digital set by feb '09 or you won't get any over air tv.

At 1:12 PM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Good argument from the KNWA standpoint, but unfortunately the facts do not back up your contention.

Just as many adult viewers 25-54 watch the 6 p.m. in the market as watch the 10 p.m. (Source: Nielsen). When you add the 5 p.m. on top of the 6 p.m. number, the total viewership 25-54 of the 5 and 6 p.m. is enormously higher than the 10 p.m.

In just its 6 p.m. newscast, KFSM reaches more viewers in the 25-54 demo than KNWA does in ALL of its newscasts COMBINED.

In fact, KFSM's 6 p.m. 25-54 number is more than twice that of KNWA's combined 25-54 numbers for their 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts.

Among 18-49 year olds, KFSM's 6 p.m. newscast also outperforms KNWA's 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts COMBINED.

When you add just the 6 p.m. 18-49 numbers for KFSM and 40/29, they beat KNWA's COMBINED 18-49 numbers for their 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts by more than 80%.

Among viewers 25-54, if you add KFSM's and 40/29's 6 p.m. numbers together, they outperform KNWA's COMBINED 25-54 numbers for their 5, 6 and 10 p.m. newscasts by more than 300%.

Those are the facts. You can drink all the Nexstar juice you want, but they are not in the running with KFSM and 40/29 and, in fact, you have to combine KNWA's 5, 6 and 10 p.m. numbers to equal even one third of the 25-54 demo number pulled by 5 and 40/29 at 6 p.m. alone.

Good try, though.

At 1:44 PM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

First of all I don't drink the Nexstar water and the comment wasn't intended to be a KNWA side of the story. If you read what was said I was making a strong case for KFSM and it's future. Second, you're using total dma not just northern counties which is what KNWA hangs it's hat on. Yes they are weaker at 5 and 6 but not like the area with Ft. Smith included. One last thing, you didn't get the point of the age thing. There is a huge difference between an 18 and a 49 yr old and the same for 25 and 54. Trying thinking on your own sometime instead of reading something out of a book.

At 6:10 PM, September 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who gives a crap about winning 2 counties? Sure they're growing, but it's only makes up less than half of the total audience.

You can play good the first half, but if you blow the WHOLE game you're still the loser. Just ask the Hogs.

KNWA's strategy is a joke. It would be like KHBS or KFSM only covering Johnson and Franklin County and then trying to tout the fact that they're close to the other stations in two counties.

You guys don't get the AP Wire so I'll help you out: Market 102 consists of Madison, Washington, Benton, Crawford, Sebastian, Franklin, Johnson, Sequoyah, LeFlore, Scott & Logan County.

That's 11 Counties, not 2. You cover 18% of the market. So you've basically said "screw off" to the remaining 82%.

At 11:46 AM, September 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Washington and Benton Counties are 40/29's traditional home turf. Only one station is gaining audience in that area, and it isn't KNWA.

KNWA's Washington and Benton County numbers are LOWER than they were before the big change.

Northwest Arkansas (and the total market) is a race between two players, 40/29 and KFSM.

KNWA's plan was to knock off 40/29 in NWA. It was a good plan, but the execution was awful. The plan failed. They picked up a few numbers from KHBS/KHOG and got a one book spike. They have since lost those numbers right back to 40/29.

KFSM beats the "Northwest Arkansas Always" station in Northwest Arkansas in the mornings, at 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. KNWA is only competitive at 10 p.m. (in Washington and Benton Counties) and their numbers there are sliding.

Washington and Benton Counties are growing at a nice pace, but come on. We aren't exactly talking Atlanta or Dallas here (or even Tulsa or Little Rock). It takes the entire area to equal a #102 market. By themselves Washington and Benton Counties would be Market #162. Fort Smith and the River Valley as a solo market would actually be slightly bigger (Market #160). You put them both together and you get a market that should slowly creep into the top 100 over the next couple of years.

Those are the facts. I'm sorry if they don't match your opinion. As Mike Irwin says, though, "It is your God given right to know better and still be wrong."

Anyone that compares Washington and Benton counties to Franklin and Johnson is an idiot. You are missing the point. I remember when Fox stations went on the air around the country and the tradional airhead news people of the world said that it wasn't a "real" network because it didn't have nightly news and most of the local affiliates didn't either. My point is it doesn't matter if your #1, #2 or #37. If you have a different product and position it right, you will be ahead of the game. Knwa has made a positioning statement and hasn't changed. I'm not the Nexstar water drinker but what KNWA is doing was their only shot. They were #3 and in a lot of areas still #3. However, I will bet you that 40/29 follows before it's all said and done.

Does anybody think a metered market would change the ratings here? I mean do we actually believe people fill out those diaries dilligently and accurately? Guess what I am asking is, does anybody think the hierarchy of stations would change very drastically if they stopped using diaries and went to meters?

At 6:24 AM, September 08, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's already been proven in every market that has moved from diaries to meters. The number 1 station especially HH number 1 goes down and the Fox.UPN,WB's and the lower rated station increase share. Pick any market and see for yourself. I'm not saying Fox or KNWA would go to number 1 but they would gain on the pack and KFSM would take most of the beating. This market will never see that though so don't get your hopes up.

At 12:47 PM, September 08, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well, if the market did go meter it still would not matter. Nexstar will not pay for Nielson. So, I believe this would leave them with their ZERO.

Of course, digital OTA watchers can probably get knwa, and some analog watchers with preamps might be able to pick up 51 if they're lucky.

Does NWA even have a CW affiliate?
cwtv.com says we have one and it's website is http://www.yourcwnorthernarkansas.com/ but it's not up yet.

Equity Broadcasting's stations in Fort Smith, and probably most areas are kind of messed up right now, too.

In Fort Smith, KPBI46(which is now mytv46, a mynetworktv affiliate) is on channel 10 and kfdf10(which is now a Retro TV Network "affiliate") is on channel 34 and 46. On cox, kpbi46 is on whatever channel UPN was on, and whatever channel the WB was on is now the CW, but I don't know who the affiliate is or if it's COX's or what.

This wreaks havoc on anyone trying to use a PVR to record things off those channels. I got around it by using an xmltv importer and swapping the channels around, but it's not ideal.
