KATV Names Steve Sullivan Sports Director

Source: KATV Press Release KATV, the ABC affiliate in Little Rock, Arkansas, today announces the enhancement of its already dominant Arkansas Razorback sports coverage. Steve Sullivan, long-time sports anchor, has been named Sports Director and the television station is opening a permanent sports bureau in Fayetteville.

Sullivan has been a part of the KATV sports team since 1998, and has been covering Arkansas sports as an anchor and reporter for more than 20 years. The host of the highly successful SportsWeek and Friday Night Touchdowns is a two-time Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year.

“KATV has been the home of the Arkansas Razorbacks for the past 40 years,” KATV President and General Manager Dale Nicholson says, “and we are proud to continue that history of award winning Razorback coverage with Steve Sullivan.”

“Paul Eells can never be replaced, but I am honored for the opportunity to walk in his footsteps and continue KATV’s dedication to the Hogs,” says Sullivan.

Channel Seven Sports will also carry on the legacy of sports excellence by opening a full-time bureau in Fayetteville, dedicated to daily Razorback reports. Hog Central will be led by KATV reporter and former sports anchor-reporter Rusty Jackson.

“As an Arkansas native, I grew up a fan of KATV’s Razorback coverage and I am excited to be a part of it,” says Jackson.

Jackson is no stranger to the Razorbacks. He is a University of Arkansas graduate and spent more than two years covering the Razorbacks as a sports anchor and reporter in northwest Arkansas. Ironically, Jackson’s first assignment will not be in Fayetteville. He is in Los Angeles today covering USC’s preparations for Saturday’s game against Arkansas.

News Director Randy Dixon says he is excited about the new opportunities that the bureau will allow, “The close proximity to the Hog headquarters will increase the scope of our coverage, but it will not be limited to the state. We’ll go wherever the Hogs take us.”

My how times has changed KATV will try to cover the Hogs the way KARK has been for the last year.

I have always enjoyed sports with Steve Sullivan, I just hope they are smart enough not to drop central Arkansas sports coverage.

This is just like Channel 7! Can you people NOT come up with your own game plan? You always have to steal from the competitors? "Hog Central?" Sounds a lot like "Razorback Nation"!

I love how the News Director at 7 said "We’ll go wherever the Hogs take us." This has been Channel 4's policy for over a year! Keep playing catch up, Channel 7. When you come up with your own ideas, you are more than welcome to share them instead of stealing!

Whatever happened to KATV's Benton and Conway Bureau? Will the Fayetteville Bureau be just as successfull?

This is how 7 has done business for years -- not that there is anything wrong with that.

Barry Brandt a threat from 4? Bring him here. Same for Steve Sullivan.

For sports, there has to be a balance. Yes, the state is obsessed with the Razorbacks, but they can't do it at the expense of Central Arkansas sports, either. Don't blow off major high school events to cover U of A club-level women's rugby.

The big question is how Craig O'Neill will react to this.

After all, he's been trying sucking at the Hog teat every since he got booted from the PA job.

You're an idiot. Channel 7 has been the leader in Razorback coverage for years. Razorback nation started as a way to chnge that and I'm surprised it took KATV this long to get someone up there. It's not being a copycat, It's called keeping up with the competition.

As far as "going wherever the hogs tkae us." Congratulations, it's been your policy for over a year. It's been Channel 7's for a long time. Nobody can touch KATV's razorback coverage and you sound a little worried that the edge you thought you had just disappeared.

This Hogs obesession is out of control. That makes just KLRT and THV without a Fayetteville bureau. High School stuff is just as important, and what about ASU, UALR and UCA. I've actually started watching KLRT's sports coverage lately, they do a pretty good job of spreading it around. I'm sure KATV won't let up on central Arkansas stuff either.

Look at the research...nobody cares...Home of the Hogs, Razorback Nation, Pig Fnckers, it doesn't matter. People don't watch local stations because of their alliances or coverage of the razorbacks. especially when they're in the middle of a 3 win season.

1:53- The Hogs are what most people care about first and foremost. If some other sports entity (college or high school) drew that much interest, they would get more coverage. KATV and most other media outlets aren't gonna cover teams of less interest out of sheer guilt or obligation.

Here's my breakdown of Hogs coverage:

Razorback Nation - Best coverage considering they're across the street from campus.

KATV - Was known as the Hog station, no longer, but trying to get it back.

KTHV - They give some effort here, but don't have the same resources as above. Craig still pining for his days as the PA guy.

KLRT - New kids in town, give solid effort considering resourcs, seems like they're making a strong push with the High School stuff. Just might work.

All in all, everyone covers them, some just have built in advantages.

3:58.....KATV and the Arkansas Athletic Department are tied at the hip. News Flash! KATV is Hog's coverage, and everything anyone else does is an attempt to keep up with them. If you want to separate KATV from the Hogs...you gotta figure out a way to get the radio/TV rights away. Good luck there...since KATV has been outbid in the past and always gets the nod because Broyles trusts them.

That just means if Frank doesn't want a story to air...you will not see it on KATV. Same reason you'll never see 7 On Your Side go after major KATV clients. Very big lack of journalistic ethics.

Truth is, the Hogs just don't have the draw they used to. The coaches show is nothing but free money for the coach because ratings show it's a ratings loser.

Give us a winning season for a change and it may be different, but not now.

I am not disagreeing with the last 2 posters,,,I am just rebutting anyone who is crazy enough to suggest that ANY other station in this market is more identified with the Hogs than KATV. KARK can Razorback Nation till they're blue in the face (I happen to think RN is a good idea)...but when the viewers think Hogs, they think KATV...at least for now. That may change in the future if they don't carry the torch as well as Paul did. A LOT would have to happen bad for KATV for them to lose their recognition as the "Home of the Hogs"

At 10:43 AM, August 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Couple of comments:

No question KATV is closely tied to the Hogs. Their close relationship goes back to the early 60s with KATV sports director Bud Campbell calling the games...then Paul. Most Hog fans...whether they choose to watch 7 or not...they are the undisputed king of Hog coverage.

Having said that...who knows what can happen in the future. I think someone would have to take ARSN away from them, and as long as King Dale is in charge...Fat Chance.

But, if the Cardinals can leave KMOX after 50+ years....anything's possible.

KTHV is not completely left in the cold with the Hogs. Don't forget KFSM is out there and they are a very strong station. I'm sure THV will try and forge stronger ties now that 4 and 7 both broadcast live regularly from Fayetteville.

Sounds so simple...right? I'm sure dealing with Mike Irwin will be a pleasure for Craig O'Neill:)

If you can handle Mike's "Cheery" personality, there is no Hog man any better than Mike. He knows what he's doing. I'll give him that.

THV needs KFSM now more than ever to keep up, in my opinion.

You're an idiot. IT only takes one viewing of sportsweek to realize that they are not schills for the program. They are very critical when things go wrong. In fact, that has caused some tension between 7 and the hill in the past.

You really should know what you are talking about before you go blurting out things like that. It just shows your lack of credibility and ethics.

KTHV has the SEC schedule and even the game with USC. What station will you be watching that night? How about the battle of the boot. Also, Frank actually likes Craig a lot. You goobers have manufactured the negative vibes...THV seems to give the hogs as much coverage as they deserve. To say hogs are the only game in town is pretty narrow minded and senseless. Go out there and chase after it all,,,,then go to KTHV and watch the game! 7 is hogs...shouldn't it be 7 are hogs.???

I know the statewide fascination with the Hogs is an irritant to those who are not Arkansas fans. But, you know as well as I do that this is reality:

THE HOGS ARE THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN that more than a few here and there care about!

We can debate whether 7 is Hogs, but there's no debating that ARKANSAS IS HOGS

This is for all you Hog haters out there, and those who are not from here that just don't get it. There's a cold hard fact that you all need to understand if you choose to work in Arkansas television:

For at least 50 years, the Arkansas Razorbacks have consistently been the top story in Arkansas. Anything significant, or even interesting, that happens with Arkansas football and men's basketball DWARFS any other news story that might be going on at the time. I'm talking news, sports, and weather.

Arkansas State, UCA, and the other in-state schools, don't matter to the masses. Right or wrong...again reality....they don't. Those schools have small pockets of real, knowledgable fans. Hog fans number in the millions.

If you are not an Arkansas fan, or at least willing to tolerate them, you will stay very irritated during football and basketball season....especially when they win. Why, because that's what ALMOST EVERYONE is talking about.

I am not saying this is the way it should be....I am saying this is how it is!!! Your understanding of these facts will go a long way towards how successful or unsuccessful you are in this news market...particularly in management.

Well said 2:17- although people outside Little Rock care about their local high school football team...and we cover that well on Friday nights.

I just get so sick of people saying "well, what about the other schools?" Well, what about them?? Most people don't have anything against them, they're just not interested! Since that is REALITY, as the 2:17 poster pointed out, why should we go out of our way to cover them? We should use our resources on what people care most about- The Hogs every day of the week, and high school football on Friday nights.

Most station managers rightly refuse to be guilted into providing significant, ongoing coverage of sports teams and events that most people don't care anything about; just because "that's not fair.....waaaaa."

They are guilted in Jonesboro! I think people monitor K8 and the Jonesboro Sun just to make sure they are providing balanced coverage between the Hogs and the Tribe. Most of those people don't actually pay attention to the TV reports or read the paper articles. They hate the Hogs, and they just want to make sure the station and the paper don't treat them as more important.

3:08- You said it dude! Hog fans in East Arkansas outnumber ASU fans at least 10:1, but if you watched KAIT, you'd think they are equals. IT's a joke! I'm talking about fans that follow the teams, not those who just say I like one or the other.

KAIT is pretty good for a station its size, but they blow the ASU coverage out of proportion when compared to actual viewer interest. I understand why they do it, since they are in Jonesboro and I'm sure many current and potential advertisers are ASU supporters. But, it still gets on a lot of peoples nerves around here.

3:08 makes a good point that there are some people who call themselves ASU fans, when in reality they are simply Hog Haters looking for an anti-Hog cause to support. ASU will take their mouths and their money because it all helps, but you don't grow a fan base out of hate for another school/team.

That's ASU's biggest problem. Lack of true fans who love the team and follow them year end and year out. I'm talking about people who don't just attend games because they're close by and something to do; like most that attend Travelers, Rimrockers, and Twisters games. ASU needs fans who know the main players, the coaches, the other teams in the conference, key wins/losses in past years, etc. For the Razorbacks, those fans worldwide number in the millions. If ASU has 20,000 fans by that standard, I'd be surprised.

Typical response from a hog fan.

That's fine, if you're happy with the team I can't change that. But wouldn't it be nice to go into a season with championship hopes instead of wondering if we can pull off winning 5 games?

I feel sorry for hog fan, I truly do.

At 11:30 PM, August 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Typical response from someone who doesn't understand what it's like to be a real fan of one team. You don't just support a team because they're good, you support them because you love the team!

If it was about who wins, then people's support would change almost yearly depending on who's good!

And, don't say that Razorbacks=mediocrity. We've had years where we've won big, been mediocre, and been lousy...like the last two. We'll continue to have our good and bad seasons just like everyone else.....EVERYONE else!

I can tell you when each and every team now in the Top 10 has been lousy like we've been the last 2 years...and it hasn't been that long ago for any of them.

He is desperate to get back in the game since his firing. That would be the best thing KATV could do in terms of helping the competition. Eric has zero talent and is a phony. Or at least it was that way years ago at Today's THV

I've been watching this sports battle between 7 and 4 for a while and my unbiased opinion is that 4 is the clear winner.
No offense to Rusty Jackson but the reports he has provided so far don't even come close to what Bo,Matt and Aaron do on a nightly basis.
As for 11, Craig is usually busy dressing up as Coach Roosterpoot so he doesn't know what's going on with the hogs. My two cents

I like Razorback Nation. I think it's a great idea! As someone interested in the baseball Hogs and the Lady'Back basketball team....Razorback Nation provides far and away the best coverage of those two teams.

Having said that...who does the best job is not the primary issue. The primary issue is who are people watching, and who they consider to be the authority on Razorback sports.

KATV has been "tied at the hip" with the Hogs for over 40 years for several reasons. The vast majority of viewers consider KATV the best with the Hogs, whether they choose to watch or not.

Yes, their business relationship through ARSN is a big part of it...but they just have 40 plus years head start being "Home of the Hogs". It will take a long time....years....for someone to overcome that tradition in the minds of the viewers.

The unfortunate passing of Paul Eells may open the door in the future if his replacement isn't as popular...but even then it will take a long time for the viewers to make the switch.

KATV is home of the hogs for one reason, frank broyles. So yes, KATV and the U of A are tied at the hips. And it's because of broyles I can't be a razorback fan. He needs to go!

I would not be so sure about KATV and U of A tied at the hip. Remember the KMOX message. They have had that relationship because of their ARSN product. However, there has never been a real second threat who was capable of that production. There have been lots of hickups between them. It has been a relationship of convenience.

Hey 2:17, does that include the race for governor? What about when Clinton was elected president of the United States? Were the Hogs bigger than that? Hardly. UA wasn't bigger than that huge ice storm a few years back and it won't be if Mike Huckabee runs for and wins the White House. The Hogs are huge, but viewers know where their priorities are.

All of these posts and I only read 2 that have anything to do with Steve Sullivan being named Sports Director at KATV.

They could have created another blog section for all the other comments, but none remotely had the fact that Steve is the Sports Director in mind.

Steve's an excellent sportscaster and dedicated to his craft. If his comments on Sportsweek keep him off the ARSN broadcasts, then that's the UofA's loss. I respect a guy who has opinions that are totally his and is not afraid to voice them.

Steve is the best and he deserves this. He's paid his dues and waited his turn, although his turn did come at the untimely demise of someone else. Let's not all lose sight of the fact the he is the right person for this promotion!!

.....and yes, I work for the competition!!

The voice of the hogs should not be an anchor for any TV station. The "voice" should be biased for the hogs. For goodness sake the person is paid to "talk-up" the team. Journalism is not part of the job. Also, it doesn't benefit the U of A for the voice to be from one station. The school should want ever station to be the "HOME" of the Razorbacks.
