Valentine's Day Surprise! Viewers Treated To On-Air Proposal at KHBS/KHOG

Source: The Hometown Channel.com It started out as an interview on the 40/29 Morning Show, but it ended up as the ultimate Valentine's Day present.

Cheryl Wasson, owner of Creative Events by Cheryl, was giving a live interview in Fort Smith, but was lovingly interrupted by Dave Healy, a Hometown News photojournalist and Cheryl's longtime love.

After Dave informed Meteorologist Drew Michaels that the roses he was carrying were not for Drew, Dave assumed the classic proposal position -- bended knee -- and popped the question. Cheryl gave the classic answer, a tearful yes, before an audience of thousands of Hometown News viewers.

The newscast, anchored by Jennifer Haile and Michaels, airs Monday through Friday at 5:30 to 7:00 a.m. on 40/29 Your Hometown News, Fort Smith/Fayetteville.

Isn't it a conflict of interest for her to get free publicity for her business just because she's dating a 40/29 employee? If Donna Bragg was dating a dentist and doing a story about teeth whitening, wouldn't it be a conflict of interest for her to interview her paramour?

Too bad it didn't help 40's ratings. I heard they really need the help, especially with their numbers getting worse and worse. Is it true even KNWA beat them? Pretty sad...

If it is true, their news director better start packing his bags...

Or maybe they need to get rid of Salser???

Both might help them.

Okay, I'm curious as to what has happened to 40/29. Two and a half years ago the morning show was on top in the ratings. Has it gone that far down the tubes? OR are we talking about all of the newscasts in general?

Their morning show wins key demos.

At 12:42 PM, February 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No matter how you spin it, 40/29 is slipping dramatically in the ratings. This once dominant station in Northwest Arkansas is now in a dog fight with KFSM and is feeling the effects of KNWA's influence in the market.

At 1:21 PM, February 17, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone who thinks 40/29 is still a powerhouse in NWA is not reading the same ratings book I saw.

I know you read this KATV and yes I work there something needs to be done about dale nickerson and they need to put michlle rupp in charge even though she has some sort of heart condition she's the best on tv right now.

Anon: "No matter how you spin it, 40/29 is slipping dramatically in the ratings."

Craig "Bogus" Cannon's bumbling, drugging, and false "integrity" might have something to do with their demise. I hate the sight of the, according to the AR Times article after his flight to Memphis to avoid arrest, "perfectionist." He never fails to screw up his newsreading each day. Does he write his own stories? I doubt he has the capacity to actually gather the news and write a story. Imagine Cannon on a call-in show on Saturday nights like KNWA's Don Elkins; what a joke that would be!

Not all of the FYV-FSM TV stations take Nielsen, but I will say that KHBS is losing the ratings and the demos in NWA during their AM show, typically their stronghold.

I don't think management at KHBS shows the actual book to their employees.

At 9:55 AM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking of their morning show, what's up with not having team coverage during the winter storm?

Some of us in the broadcast biz want to compete, but you guys don't bring it.

At 1:33 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"I don't think management at KHBS shows the actual book to their employees."

How can you blame them for not showing them? Management don't want their employees to know their station is going under. Even KNWA is beating them!

How sad for 40/29...

At 1:46 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KNWA's morning show is on the up and up. I mean, come on, who would you rather watch? Bobbie, Jennifer, or DANA SARGENT?

At 4:02 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

40/29 was on the air from 5:45 till 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. You mean Drew and Charles didn't stand in front of the 7 day forecast graphic and talk to each other...no, that was Lewis and one of the Flickinger's. If that's what you like to watch, then enjoy! Having reporters live in both spots along with weather hits on the top and bottom of every hour told the story.

At 4:39 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sure, nothing like the meteorologist saying: "life threatening weather" and then pitching to cartoons.

The biggest winter storm of the season...was Salser even in this morning? Nice try guys, but you blew it again.

Next time Salser forecast 6"+ I'll be sure to tune in for the flurries.

At 4:49 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Having reporters live in both spots along with weather hits on the top and bottom of every hour told the story."

Sounds like you're saying KFSM was doing a good thing? They had all their weather forcasters in, plus 2 reporters. Can't say the same about 40/29.

I'm sorry, but they're just falling. Salser needs to pack his bags, or at the very least, get his behind out of bed and come in to work, especially on days he refers to the weather as life threatening!

Just doesn't make sense to me.

"WINTER STOOORRRMMM!"

At 4:56 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So AM Flick and Lewis were in?

At 5:17 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought it looked like George and Garrett were going to make out while they were both in the weather wall.

At 6:14 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's funny how people hide behind anonymous posts to badmouth other stations. Get it though your head: all three stations have three different ways of doing things.

KFSM had 2 reporters and a couple of meteorlogists during their USUAL morning show, plus the weather men bantering back and forth over a map. Nothing to brag about if you ask me.

Didn't see KNWA...but I believe they had several reporters throughout the state.

KHBS had two reporters and a meteorologist.

That sums it up. KFSM didn't blow anyone out of the water. All three stations delivered the same information. Only difference is their viewers are senile enough to want to watch meteorologists banter over a map.

At 6:25 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"The biggest winter storm of the season...was Salser even in this morning? Nice try guys, but you blew it again."

The information was presented on 40/29, so you can't honestly say they blew it. The viewers were updated on the top and bottom of the hour, do you need to be on constantly? Are road conditions changing every minute? No! They are still slick and hazardous.....you get new information, and then you present it to the viewers. Going on and on about the same info irritates people, especially when you have weather guys rambling on the wall. Get over it! Overkill

At 8:27 PM, February 18, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Still Salser, a Chief Meteorologist, was sleeping this morning at home, while he called the weather "life threatening".

Not much of a CHIEF if you ask me.

Salser actually called the weather life threatening?

I know ice can be dangerous...but not life threatening. A tornado, yes. An ice tornado, yes. But ice & snow? I don't think so.

Back to Dora the Explorer!

At 7:13 AM, February 19, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not really one to take up for Charles Salser, but I'll have to on this one. Charles may have a tendency to blow things a bit out of proportion, but any kind of ice and snow in Arkansas and Oklahoma is significant.

Extreme cold that can cause hypothermia and ice and snow that can cause accidents...ISN'T potentially LIFE THREATENING? Are you nuts?

.....Especially in an area of the country that DOESN'T see this type of weather on a regular basis?

It may not be a tornado, but it's still extreme weather that could claim lives if precautions aren't taken.

Do they have to have ALL their meteorologists in to determine what the radar says. That's a little overkill to me. if they need to consult each other to determine weather then maybe 40/29 did do a better job, with one person saying the exact same thing

At 11:48 AM, February 19, 2006, Anonymous Print said...

It could have been a little much. Lewis running radar, AM Flick live in the snow, Weekend Flick at the wall. That station goes all out with weather and Lewis goes into work when the clouds are dark.

On the other hand, viewers woke up to snow, and unless they woke up at the top or bottom of the hour. KFSM and KNWA were the only ones on the air.

KNWA needs to focus on NWA, they're all over the map. They've made huge progress by beating KHOG in NWA but unless they focus they'll lose their audience.

At 11:50 AM, February 19, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I had travels planned to Little Rock for this weekend, and am personally glad KNWA was showing what was going on around the state. Northwest Arkansas may be a different region of the state, but it was good for some to know what else was going on.

At 12:40 PM, February 19, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So with the winter weather and snow on Sunday...where was KNWA?...They claim to be only northwest Arkansas news, but wouldn't that require covering the snow in Benton county today? It is the most heavily populated area in the DMA. Interesting..toot your horn all you want about saturday's coverage, but being inconsistent will get you killed.....

This kind of weather is only life threatening if stupid drivers ignore the dangers. I believe calling it life threatening is over kill if you ask me.

Some of you may want to check your company's policy about blog posting.

Some corporations prohibt the use of real names, company operations, or negative and untrue information.

Blogman probably has list of all the IP's posting and their respective company ie..Nexstar, Hearst, NYT, Gannett, Clear Channel, etc

Who cares if it was Jason, Drew, of the host of channel 5 personnel, but they all told you the conditions, so suck it up and do your job instead of complaining about everyone else.

At 7:59 PM, February 19, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Drew Michaels would be a decent broadcast meteorologist if he didnt have his head up Charles Salser's butt. The weather coverage may have been pretty much equal but it wont be that way in the ratings... why? because Garrett Lewis is more popular than any of the others. Even Brad is now pretty popular which is impressive since he hasnt been here nearly as long as the rest. I used to like Drew a lot but he acts too much like Salser now. I have never liked Salser. He is to arrogant which is kinda funny since he is hardly ever right about any significent weather episode. They always claim they were right but if you actually keep up with what they say you will find 90% of their wx promos for their "outstanding" performance are pretty much made up. I think one time they actually "recreated" a wx show and changed their graphics to be right.

At 6:09 AM, February 20, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You have just read a KFSM homer...you can barely tell he/she works for KFSM. Equally impressive, this was the first positive comment on Brad Flickinger. Does Brad let you work his radar?

I believe 40/29 has done the same. If it's broadcasted that way, there's no way to take the bug out while showing highlights. Nice try finding something to make fun of 5 about.

Good luck to 40/29 when they have to use a CBS feed from 5 when there's storm coverage, we'll be laughing at them...

At 4:07 PM, February 21, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's one thing to have the other stations bug on your highlight reel.. but to use a part of the video with the crawl saying "This is meteorologist Drew Micheals in the 40/29 Super Doppler Weather Center" running at the bottom of the screen is just simply sloppy. Section 8? I say Section 5. LOW BUDGET.

KHBS was rolling crawls at the top of the screen in "non-super" territory. Personally, I would have replaced with video with an ESS, unless it was just unbelievable video.

They could have rolled on KTUL since it's on cable but then you guys would be talking about their wx bug and crawl.

Well, when the Hogs beat a top 10 team, running an ESS wouldn't do justice. It's not everyday the Hogs do something like that...

So if your only resort in showing the footage is showing the scroll, I guess you have to live with it...

I'm sure I wouldn't think it was funny either if someone was calling me lazy! But that is the price that is paid when you can dish it about other stations and can't take it when people dog yours out! By the way....I don't have to post my own laughter comments....apparently I'm funny enough on my own!

IT TURNED OUT TO BE A CHILLY DAY...MAYBE WE NEED TO GET SOMETHING HOT TO DRINK.......

Seriously folks....if you can stomach watching Salser, watch him begin every weathercast or weather tease with "turned out to be".

I guarantee that 98% of the time he will say it.

Talk about a lack of creativity.

Well, that's when he actually shows up for severe weather coverage. This past snow event isn't the first time that he's been "sick" when he should be working.

Good at putting viewers to sleep

When I have trouble sleeping, instead of counting sheep, I count Salser's inaccurate forecasts.

I usually fall asleep before I get through them all, although I end up having some pretty frightening nightmares....

WINTER STOOOOOORRRRMMMM!!!

Dreaming about Salser? That's enough to put anyone into intensive therapy for the rest of their lives.

You Arkansans are so pathetic. So inferior. Like, who gives a shit, really? Glad I'm long gone. Geez!

Then Good Riddance. We don't want someone as stupid as you

Well for somebody who left..you sure like to check back in...looking back are you?

That actually is a good point..you beat me to it.

I used to work in NWA and I lived in Arkansas a long time prior to that (not originally from there) and Arkansans are NOT pathetic nor are they inferior. Arkansas has some good people, some of the nicest I have ever encountered.

That person is bitter probably because they pissed some people off there.

If I was stupid, I'd still be in Ar-kan-saw. Woooooo, pig sooie! The gayest college chant I've ever heard, by the way.

If we are so inferior by putting our opinions on here, then what does that make you? A hypocrite if you ask me. And a "pathetic" one at that

Like I didn't see that one coming. So long, suckers! ;)
