On the Run in Fort Smith

An e-mailer sent in a tip to us that a foot chase Thursday night ended just right outside the studios of KFSM in Fort Smith. The e-mailer says, "Police foot chase just before their reporter went live out the front door, and continued to the back of the studio building during the newscast." Check out the video HERE.

And why this is important is because...?

For the same reason most of the other crap we all run is important.

COPS hasn't been on the air since 1989 because of their actors. Good video gets the job done.

that was not good video...pretty boring stuff if you ask me. i watched it and said "thats it?" did not live up to the hype in my eyes. nice try though.

On the other hand, you watched it!

That's why KFSM is #2 and 40/29 rules!

I agree...I too was not impressed. And don't try to play like you didn't notice the shotty editing.

And the SOT with the nats mic made little sense. So what if the dude couldn't see? Cops spray mase more often than you think. And I noticed the sloppy jump-cut like edit at the end too.

Nice try guys.

It looks like it's the raw video. I've noticed many stations, especially in larger markets, only running a 20sec v/o and rolling all the raw video on their website.

Not sure about 40/29 being #1. They're the sliding #2 station in that NWA market.

(Nov book from a previous post)

It doesn't happen everyday...and I am sure it won't happen in a long time again. I thought it was funny...

and 40 sucks...

40/29 wins the key demo....the only reason 5 wins the River Valley is because of the older and more conservative population there.

5 news wins in the river valley because of two words:
ashley beck!!

At 3:00 PM, February 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

ashley beck isss hot, she definately brings in some #'s on her own!

At 3:23 PM, February 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

5 gets the ratings because of the older market in the valley...but the video quality and story quality is not even close...40/29 wins every time...and they win the demo's that are more important to them, the younger viewing market...basically i guess i'm saying ratings be damned, 40/29 is a MUCH higher quality news team

At 3:31 PM, February 04, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah... I have to agree with the above statement. Channel 5 has a really antiquated look. Compared to other New York Times stations like WREG in Memphis, their look is really 80's ish. If they'd reveal a new graphics package.. get rid of that dreaded and ugly Kavouras weather grpahics system for WSI or Weather Central (they prob will get WC since they bought Kavouras) then they may actually compete "look-wise" with 40/29 one day. As of now... their look pales in comparison to 40/29 and KNWA's much cleaner and "newer" look.

Furthermore...Ashley Beck is very attractive. The folks in the Rhinelander/Wausau, WI market hated to see her go...according to a friend of mine that works in that market.

40/29 has their fare share of nice looking female talent.

Beth Burnett was their best looking...she's gone to bigger and better things now. There are others though. And KNWA has their fair share.

KFSM updated to Weather Central back in '03, they're using the same news graphics package as WNEP another NYT station.

They looked flat awful a few years back but their overall product has improved 10 fold. KHBS runs the same graphics package as all the other Hearst stations, hopefully they will get an update soon.

At 9:47 PM, February 04, 2006, Anonymous AMNewsBoy said...

The Hearst graphics won't get updated soon, considering that graphics pkg came out less than a year ago. Some Hearst stations (KMBC and WESH, most notably) are running variants of it that look a hell of a lot better, IMHO.

As for KFSM... I just want to hack that backdrop behind the anchors to bits. I've seen college stations with better set pieces.

"KFSM updated to Weather Central back in '03, they're using the same news graphics package as WNEP another NYT station."

Are you sure about that? I swear that looks like the Kavouras Triton RT weather graphics system, with those gigantic fronts. What they have looks nothing close to WC Genesis or Genesis Live.

Those saying 40/29's news is better than 5's is out of their mind. KFSM isn't just a ratings winner, they've won all over the board. Ratings aren't just numbers, they're a showing of how well the channel is doing, and they way it's looking, is they're on the way up, and 40/29 is on the way down...

At 7:24 AM, February 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Better weather graphics and graphic packages does not equal a better newcast. Just ask KNWA. Great looking graphics...AWFUL newscast.

I echo the above post...40's following that same path.

KFSM definitely is the superior station in the demographic.

they have meteorologix (sp?) thats the weather system they use now but a few years ago...i think they were using powerpoint for their weather graphics. their set is the ugliest thing ever. put a picture or something on that background!
40/29 has the best product
5 has the second best and KNWA has worst news product. now if its only based on presentation and looks, KNWA wins followed by 40 and then 5 dead last. but we all know its not just about looks.

At 2:51 PM, February 05, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Meteorologix....that's the name of it. They and Kavouras are the same. Weather Central just bought them so they prob will go to Genesis Live soon. Maybe Garrett or one of the Flickingers can comment on this. KNWA is probably going to go to Accuweather pretty soon if they haven't already as will KARK due to Nextar siding with Accuweather.

You think 40/29's problem is the high turnover of on-air talent? Seems like people stay at KFSM longer than those at 40/29. There has been some turnover at KNWA and KFSM...but I don't think it has been to the degree as the other stations. Now the main talent has been around for a while (Craig, Donna, Charles, Leslee).

Another thing.. maybe it is also because 40/29 is no longer as strong of a sports team as it once was. Beau certinaly is a promising addition to the team..he is doing well. And Derek is well-know and has been there the longest. People are still getting used to Mark...while other sports talent at the other stations have been around a while...either at their respective stations or others in the market.

Maybe people get tired of getting used to a new face every year?

I will say this. It's tough to keep anyone in that market. Especially if they are talented. Unless they really have ties to that area, I don't see any other reason why they'd stay...esp if another market is dangling some serious cash in their face.

Just some random thoughts. I think you can literally kill yourself trying to figure these rating numbers out.

Yes, KFSM is using the Meteorologix "X" system. KFSM dumped the awful i7 a few years back. And yes, it was THAT bad. Actually, worse than Powerpoint.

Meteorologix is very competitive with WSI & Genesis. It's just not very user friendly. Since WC bought X out, it makes me wonder how much "attention" WC will give current X users.

I really don't think we want to start making personal slams like that here, do we? Classless.

And say what you want to about this video, but that video they got from Norfork was freaking incredible.

ashley beck: yuck.

police chase out their back door. having their Outdoors crew in Norfolk on the exact same day as a wanted guy from Massachusetts decides to drive through a 500 people city in north central arkansas and gets killed after killing a cop. Some of us might not like KFSM but it does seem that the big guy upstairs appreciates their hard work and is rewarding them for it! and during sweeps too!

At 6:38 PM, February 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think God is taking pity on KFSM. I don't think their hard work (read: lack there-of) has anything to do with it.

At 10:51 PM, February 06, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 5 can't lie and say their strong work ethic got them the video out of Norfork.

We all *know* that is NOT the case!

You can say there was no hard work involved in that if you want, but that was some high quality video. Kudos to the guys for shooting it and getting it out.

At 9:31 AM, February 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

whether any of us want to admit it or not... all of us (KHBS-KHOG, KFSM & KNWA) work extremely hard every day. and if you are in the biz you know this.

At 12:35 PM, February 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

maybe KFSM sold their souls to the devil....just an idea

At 12:42 PM, February 07, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

KFSM got lucky? Absolutely. Did they get some great video before anyone else did? Absolutely. Could it have happened to any station? Absolutely.

Come on guys... gimme a break. Do you actually think anyone from NWA would have been able to get up there in time to get ANY video from this if noone had been up there in the first place? The closest market to Norfork distance -wise is Springfield, MO or Jonesboro...but as windy as those roads are up there in north central ARK it would take at least 2 hours to get there...3 from FYV or FSM.

So give the kudos to KFSM for getting some good video.....maybe it'll be YOUR station next time that's in the right place that the right time.

.....And no I don't work for KFSM nor do I even work in the NWA market anymore.

You can brag about the female talent in NWA and the "Western Wall" but nobody, nobody beats KATV's Beth Hunt in looks, delivery, knowledge and looks.

"Yeah because she's "done" more people throughout the River Valley"

Not to get into it like this person, but it's sad when everybody has to slam every person on here personally. If she's better on air than you, get better. If she looks better than you, get a life. It seems people like this have nothing better to do than talk sh*t.

If that's all you have to say, then you're words are meaningless. And apparently no one on here gives two sh*ts about who you are and what you do.

Ashley, like many others is a good person, and I'm proud to have her as a friend. But unlike many, she's a good reporter and people identify with her when she is on-air.

You might not ever attain that with your ugly attitude.
